Background: There is no clinical study on ceramic self-ligating brackets (SLBs). Therefore, this preliminary study was conducted for the first time to address its effects. Materials and Methods: This split-mouth randomized trial was performed on 32 quadrants in 16 orthodontic patients needing extraction of maxillary premolars and distalization of canines. In each blinded patient, right/left sides were randomized into control (ceramic bracket) and experimental (ceramic SLB) groups. Dental stone models were taken before canine retraction and 3 months into retraction. Models were digitized as three-dimensional models. Changes were measured on superimposed models. Groups were compared using Wilcoxon signed-rank test (α = 0.05, β = 0.1). Results: Both bracket types caused significant changes after 3 months in terms of all assessed clinical outcomes (P ≤ 0.002). Compared to conventional ceramic brackets (control), ceramic SLBs reduced retraction rate (P = 0.001), canine rotation (P = 0.001), canine tipping (P = 0.002), and arch expansion at the canine site (P = 0.003). However, the extents of anchorage loss (P = 0.796) and arch constriction in the premolar area (P = 0.605) were not statistically different between the bracket types. Conclusion: Compared to conventional metal-lined ceramic brackets, active ceramic SLB can increase the duration of canine distalization, while reducing canine rotation and tipping (inducing more bodily movements). The loss of anchorage with ceramic SLB was similar to that of conventional ceramic bracket after 3 months of treatment (considering the lower rate of SLB canine retraction during that time). Introduction: One of the most common maxillofacial malformations is mandibular advancement, a class II malformation or malocclusion. One treatment is mandibular advancement surgery. This research aimed to investigate the effect of mandibular advancement surgery on upper lip length in class II patients. Methods: This retrospective study was conducted with 16 patients having class II malformations who underwent mandibular advancement surgery. Data analysis was conducted using SPSS 19. Results: Results showed that although height of philtrum increased after surgery, there was no significant difference in the height of the philtrum from before to after the mandibular advancement surgery (p> 0.05). Evaluation of the patients showed that although commissure height and vermilion height decreased after surgery, this difference was not statistically different(P> 0.05). However, there was a statistically significant difference between before and after commissure height (P<0.05) at camouflage in patients. There was also a statistically significant difference in height of philtrum and vermilion between before and after camouflage in patients (P<0.05). Conclusions: The results of this study suggest that mandibular advancement surgery plays a serious role in the clinical appearance of lip soft tissue, which can be used as a predictor of patient profile prior to surgery. Background: In patients with fixed orthodontics, the presence of orthodontic appliances causes dental plaque accumulation and hygiene problems. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of Propolis and chlorhexidine mouthwashes on plaque and gingival indices in patients who are undergoing orthodontic treatment., Material and Methods: In this triple blind study, in total, 37 patients aged from 15 to 35 years those who have been undergoing fixed orthodontic treatment were studied. After that, one of the mouthwashes that containing either Propolis or Chlorhexidine was randomly prescribed to patients. The patients were asked to use mouthwashes twice a day after brushing their teeth for three weeks consecutively. Indicators of plaque, gingival and periodontal status (PI, GI, CPI) were determined on Ramford teeth at the beginning and at the end of three weeks for each patient. Then the results were analyzed statistically., Results: The difference between the values of plaque index ( P <0.001), gingival index ( P =0.006) and periodontal index ( P = 0.005) before and after administration of Propolis were statistically significant. The difference was also statistically significant for all three indexes of plaque ( P <0.001), gingival ( P =0.001) and periodontal ( P =0.003) before and after chlorhexidine mouthwash usage. The indices after using mouthwashes were not statistically significant different between two mouthwash groups., Conclusions: It seems that Propolis mouthwash can be used as a suitable alternative in patients with fixed orthodontic treatment without the side effects of chlorhexidine mouthwash.
