2. End-User Satisfaction in Training Novice Users To Surf the Web.

Abstract

The user population of the World Wide Web is increasing rapidly. People who have never had experience with computers are logging on, and, therefore, the novice user population is very large. These new users need to be trained in using this new technology. It is therefore important to investigate which training methods leave the users most satisfied. This paper presents the results of an experiment designed to assess user satisfaction with different training methods. Over 250 users took part in this experiment, measuring user satisfaction with eight different training methods: networked error training; conceptual error training; conceptual exploratory training; conceptual training; error training; error management training; exploratory training; and traditional training. There were not major differences in user satisfaction across training methods, but overall satisfaction scores were very high. This might mean that the users were in serious need of training and were satisfied to have received training, regardless of the type of training. (Contains 34 references.) (Author/MES)

Abstract

This research focused on examining organizational and individual readiness factors which may support developing nurses' attitudes and behaviors for implementing disruptive technology. Regression modeling techniques were utilized. Results showed that the most significant factors included levels of perceived organizational readiness for change, perceived appropriateness of change, and demographic variables such as healthcare setting, highest educational level, and age. Abstract

This article explores the cultural dimensions of the human-computer interaction that underlies gaming strategies. The article is a desktop study of existing literature and is organized into five sections. The first examines the cultural aspects of knowledge processing. The social constructs technology interaction is discussed. Following this, the effects of a gamer's experience level and game preferences are examined. Game conditions, scripting, and design principles are discussed. Finally, ideas and concepts for the future of these areas are presented.

Abstract

ABSTRACT This paper presents our research experiences studying process knowledge with qualitative and quantitative methods. Informed by related arguments, we present two hypotheses that are tested using a between subjects experimental design. The first hypothesis concerns the accuracy of software process elicitation, which we characterize as the human perception of error between description and performance of a process. The second hypothesis explores the detection of subtle differences in process articulation using latent semantic analysis, a computational technique for measuring patterns in written discourse. The results of our analyses are compared along with discussion of theoretical implications. We define a new type of process property, Coherence, which represents a measure of relatedness in process knowledge. Results also indicate that Coherence may be increased with the use of a conceptual model. Future research is guided by experimental and industrial application. Abstract

Novice users face many challenges when browsing the web. The goal of this experiment was to learn about how users perceive error situations when using the World Wide Web. Specifically, the goal was to learn which circumstances cause users to believe that an error has occurred. An exploratory experiment took place with 78 subjects who were novice users. In the experiment, the subjects were asked to identify when they perceived that an error had occurred. The subjects reported a total of 219 error situations. These error situations were then classified by the researchers into the following four categories: user error, system error, situational error, and poor web design. 36. Design Activity in the Software Cost Reduction Project.

Abstract

Since 1978, the goal of the Software Cost Reduction (SCR) project has been to demonstrate the effectiveness of certain software engineering techniques for developing complex software. The application is the redevelopment of the operational flight program for the A-7E aircraft. Also since then, the Software Technology Evaluation (STE) project has been monitoring SCR project activity in order to provide an objective evaluation of the SCR methodology. SCR project activity data are collected from SCR personnel on a weekly basis. Ove 55,000 hours of SR design, code, test, and other activity data have been captured and recorded in a computer data base. Analyses of SCR module design data show that there are parameters that can be used to characterize and predict design progress. One example is the ratio between cumulative design discussing and cumulative design creating activities. This ratio is referred to as the Progress Indicator Ratio (PIR) and seems to be an accurate metric for design completeness. This and other results suggest that discussion activity among software engineers may play a major role in the software design process and may be a leading indicator of design activity progress. Abstract

An overview of these sessions indicated that: (a) there is an under-emphasis on science within the laboratories; in other words, the Navy is failing to provide a basis for developing HCI systems; (b) there is insufficient attention given to interactive aspects in HCI systems; that is, many Navy systems access, display, or store data rather than allow the user to manipulate, compute or analyze information; (c) there are too few opportunities for formal test and evaluation of component design alternatives during development; and (d) many Navy HCI groupd are isolated; therefore, an annual workshop would useful for sharing knowledge and fostering presentations on state-of-the-art research.

39. Memory Organization and Algorithmic Logic Segments of Computer Programs

Abstract

Investigations into human memory organization have shown that memory plays a key role in human problem solving and text processing. Memory organization of natural language processing has been shown to follow phrase structure segments of the language's grammar. Research has shown that the error frequency in memory recall experiments is significantly greater at phrase segment boundaries than within phrase structure units.
