The antigenecity and nutritional adequacy of N-253 formula, a partly hydrolyzed formula, were evaluated in high risk infants with a family history of atopy, on immunological and hematological parameters, weight gain, clinical conditions and stool characteristics; during the first four months of life. Its effects were compared with those observed in infants taking a conventional infant formula and breast-fed infants, There were no changes in serum IgE, cow's milk specific IgG, cow's milk-specific IgG4 concentrations and the number of eosinophils in the N-253 formula-fed infants during the study period. Whereas, those parameters were increased in infants fed with the conventional infant formula and in breast-fed infants. Positive RAST against cow's milk was not detected in the N-253 formula-fed infants (0/33), while it was detected in conventional infant formula-fed infants (2/13). Green and watery stools were observed more frequently in the N-253 formula-fed infants than in the conventional infant formula-fed infants. Weight gain and hematological values were within normal ranges in all three groups during the study period. These results suggest that the antigenecity of cow's milk is reduced in N-253 formula and that N-253 formula has nutritional efficacy for infants.

Children with bronchial asthma aged between 1 and 16 years were observed for 2 weeks, and subsequently received repirinast at a daily oral dose of 8mg/kg for 26 weeks.1. According to the impression of the affected children and the results of the evaluation of overall improvement and usefulness, repirinast was highly useful. The improvement rate increased along with the progress of the study, and the percentage of patients showing mild or better improvement fluctuated around 90% from week 12 of the study.2. Compared with the observation period, the clinical score was significantly reduced throughout the entire study period (the treatment score was reduced from week 4).3. 46.5% of the patient received repirinast for 26 weeks. Among them, 12 patients were symptomatically stable, and no increase in the treatment score was observed.Based on these results, the clinical efficancy of repirinast (Romet® fine granule for children) was confirmed. However the final number of evaluable patients was considered to be 12, in this study, no use of any concomitant drug was intented, improvement was evaluated during a limited period of 4 weeks, and the dose of repirinast was subsequently reduced.

We investigated the clinical and bacteriological effects of Cefpodoxime proxetil (CPDX-PR) in pediatric infections in 118 boys and 111 girls aged one month to 14 years and 7 months. The diagnosis was acute otitis media in 89, acute tonsillitis in 81, acute pharyngolaryngitis in 34, paranasal sinusitis in 22, and other infections in 3. The daily dose of CPDX-PR was usually 9 mg/kg, but some adjustments were made depending on the effect. In 165 patients the causative organisms were cultured: H. influenzae was the most common, followed by S. aureus and S. pneumoniae. Gram-positive bacteria were detected in 54.2%, Gram-negative bacteria in 45.3%, and fungi in 0.5%. The incidence of Gramnegative infection is higher in children than in adults. The efficacy rate was 91.3%. Side effects were noted in 4 patients but they were mild. Rapid hematological effects on WBC counts, ESR, and differential counts were observed with the administration of CPDX-PR.

A case of transdiaphragmatic duodenal duplication in a premature infant is presented. Vertebral abnormalities, which have invariably accompanied this disorder in reported cases so far, were characteristically absent. Therefore, the initial tentative diagnosis was right-sided diaphragmatic hernia. Barium examination was helpful in preoperative diagnosis.
