A nontrivial space-time structure of the hot system created at RHIC is the defining aspect of the physics of relativistic heavy ion collisions. Femtoscopy through pion intensity interferometry provides direct access to the dynamic geometric substructure of the freeze-out stage, and appears to confirm source evolution via collective flow. Since flow is usually considered to be a bulk phenomenon, it is surpring to find a simple scaling in preliminary HBT radii from p+p, d+Au and Au+Au collisions. - Abstract
The research aimed to generate bioelectricity using pepper waste and the microalgae Spirulinasp by a double-chamber microbial fuel cell (dcMFC). A dcMFC was constructed with Cu and Zn electrodes, where organic waste and microalgae were placed in the anodic and cathodic chambers, respectively. Also, electrochemical parameters were measured for 35 days. Finally, possible electrogenic microorganisms were isolated and identified. It was possible to generate maximum values of current (6.04414 ± 0.2145 mA) and voltage (0.77328 ± 0.213 V). The maximum conductivity value was 134.1636 ± 7.121 mS/cm, while the internal resistance value was 83.784 ±7.147Ω. The values of power and current density reached were 584.45 ± 19.14 mW/cm 2and 5.983 A/cm 2, respectively. The optimal operating pH was 4.59 ± 0.14. From the microbial growth on the anode, the yeast Yarrowia phangngaensis(1) and Pseudomonas stutzeri(2) were identified, which may be involved in the transfer of electrons to the electrode. In conclusion, it was possible to generate clean energy in a laboratory-scale dcMFC when pepper waste and Spirulinasp. were used. These results are promising because organic waste can generate sustainable and environmentally friendly energy.

Pharmacological and psychological interventions are recommended as primary treatments in ADHD; however, other nonpharmacological intervention such as a dietary supplementation with omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (ω-3 PUFAs) has emerged as an attractive option.Purpose: The objective of the present study was to assess whether dietary supplementation with highly concentrated ω-3 docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) triglyceride may improve symptoms in ADHD.Method: A 6-month prospective double-blind placebo-controlled randomized clinical trial was designed in 66 patients with ADHD, aged between 6 and 18 years. Participants in the experimental group received a combination of ω-3 fatty acids (DHA 1,000 mg, eicosapentaenoic acid 90 mg, and docosapentaenoic acid 150 mg). Instruments included d2-test, AULA Nesplora, EDAH scales, and abbreviated Conner’s Rating Scale.Results: In the cognitive test, between-group differences were not found, but within-group differences were of a greater magnitude in the DHA group. Between-group differences in favor of the DHA arm were observed in behavioral measures, which were already detected after 3 months of treatment. Results were not changed when adjusted by ADHD medication.Conclusions: This study provides further evidence of the beneficial effect of supplementation with ω-3 DHA in the management of ADHD.Keywords: omega 3, PUFAs, eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)

- Abstract
We report first results on elliptic flow of identified particles at midrapidity in Au+Au collisions at sqrt[sNN] = 130 GeV using the STAR TPC at RHIC. The elliptic flow as a function of transverse momentum and centrality differs significantly for particles of different masses. This dependence can be accounted for in hydrodynamic models, indicating that the system created shows a behavior consistent with collective hydrodynamical flow. The fit to the data with a simple model gives information on the temperature and flow velocities at freeze-out.

- Abstract
The discovery of multi-species synchronous spawning of scleractinian corals on the Great Barrier Reef in the 1980s stimulated an extraordinary effort to document spawning times in other parts of the globe. Unfortunately, most of these data remain unpublished which limits our understanding of regional and global reproductive patterns. The Coral Spawning Database (CSD) collates much of these disparate data into a single place. The CSD includes 6178 observations (3085 of which were unpublished) of the time or day of spawning for over 300 scleractinian species in 61 genera from 101 sites in the Indo-Pacific. The goal of the CSD is to provide open access to coral spawning data to accelerate our understanding of coral reproductive biology and to provide a baseline against which to evaluate any future changes in reproductive phenology.

37. Polymorphisms of Candidate Genes to Growth in Two Populations of Colombian Creole Sheep

Objective: The study was to characterize the genetic polymorphism of 23 SNPs located in candidate growth genes in Colombian Creole hair (OPC). Materials and Methods: We used 106 individuals belonging to two OPC subpopulations located in the departments of Cesar (CS) and Cordoba (CB), these were genotyped using the OvineSNP50 Bead Chip of Illumina ®, were calculated frequencies genotypic, allelic, the Hetero zygosity observed (Ho) and expected (he), the Fixation Index (F), the Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium deviations (EHW) and a molecular variance analysis to estimate the values of FST, FIS and FIT. Findings: The minimum allelic frequency (MAF) varied from 0.042 to 0.491 in the entire OPC population, while in the CS subpopulation the values varied from 0.037 to 0.481 and in the subpopulation CB from 0.019 to 0.490. For this study four SNPs had MAF less than 10% in the subpopulation CS, while, for the subpopulation CB and OPC Just one. In addition, 47.8% of the loci showed MAF ≥ 0.10, 36.9% presented an MAF ≥ 0.20, 23.9% showed an MAF ≥ 0.30 and 8.6% of the evaluated loci presented an MAF ≥ 0.40%. Similar allelic and genotypic frequencies were found in both subpopulations. The average Ho found was 0.358 ± 0.02 and the average value was 0.378 ± 0.02, with greater diversity CB. The majority of the SNPs did not present significant diversions of EHW. Application/Improvements: Finally, the obtained results show that the studied loci have high genetic variability, which is necessary to preserve. Free fatty acid (FFA) presence in vegetable oils (VO) promotes unwanted organoleptic characteristics. Its traditional removal is carried out by steam distillation (deodorization). However, the high temperature of this process promotes the formation of toxic components such as glycidol esters (GE) and 3-monochloropropane-1,2-diol (3-MCPD). FFA extraction by solvents is an alternative refining process at low temperatures which preserves natural phytonutrients that are thermically destroyed or distilled in deodorization. In this work, a model to predict continuous co-current FFA extraction with a liquid–liquid film contactor (LLFC) using ethanol as a solvent at low temperature (<80 °C) was developed and experimentally validated. This model includes the prediction of the FFA mass transfer from the oil-rich phase to the interface. Experimental validation also assessed the effects of flow rate (0.5–1.5 kg/h), ethanol to oil mass flow rate (1–2), FFA initial concentration (2–4 wt.%), and LLFC stages employed on FFA removal. At the best operational conditions experimentally evaluated, it was possible to reduce the FFA content from 4 wt.% to 0.08 wt.%. The mathematical model shows an approximate description of the LLFC behavior and mass transfer effects that can be used for the scale-up of the technology. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The large amount of molasses that are generated in sugar-processing companies are not always redistributed for commercialization in by-products. Because of this, the present research uses these wastes as fuel in low-cost, lab-scale, single-chamber microbial fuel cells. Zinc and copper electrodes were used as electrodes and 100 mL of molasse in the chamber as fuel, managing to generate current and voltage peaks of 1.73 ± 0.13 mA and 0.953 ± 0.142 V. In monitoring the conductivity of the substrate, a maximum peak of 111.156 ± 8.45 mS/cm was observed, and a slightly acidic pH was observed throughout the monitoring. It was possible to obtain a power density of 5.45 ± 0.31 W/cm² for a current density of 308.06 mA/cm², while the yeast count showed a logarithmic curve throughout the monitoring. Finally, the molecular technique identified 100% of the special C. boidinii present in the anodic electrode. This research will give great benefits to sugar companies because they will be able to generate electricity using the molasses that cannot generate by-products. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Rapid intensification of environmental disturbances has sparked widespread decline and compositional shifts in foundation species in ecosystems worldwide. Now, an emergent challenge is to understand the consequences of shifts and losses in such habitat-forming species for associated communities and ecosystem processes. Recently, consecutive coral bleaching events shifted the morphological makeup of habitat-forming coral assemblages on the Great Barrier Reef (GBR). Considering the disparity of coral morphological growth forms in shelter provision for reef fishes, we investigated how shifts in the morphological structure of coral assemblages affect the abundance of juvenile and adult reef fishes. We used a temporal dataset from shallow reefs in the northern GBR to estimate coral convexity (a fine-scale quantitative morphological trait) and two widely used coral habitat descriptors (coral cover and reef rugosity) for disentangling the effects of coral morphology on reef fish assemblages. Changes in coral convexity, rather than live coral cover or reef rugosity, disproportionately affected juvenile reef fishes when compared to adults, and explained more than 20% of juvenile decline. The magnitude of this effect varied by fish body size with juveniles of small-bodied species showing higher vulnerability to changes in coral morphology. Our findings suggest that continued large-scale shifts in the relative abundance of morphological groups within coral assemblages are likely to affect population replenishment and dynamics of future reef fish communities. The different responses of juvenile and adult fishes according to habitat descriptors indicate that focusing on coarse-scale metrics alone may mask fine-scale ecological responses that are key to understand ecosystem functioning and resilience. Nonetheless, quantifying coral morphological traits may contribute to forecasting the structure of reef fish communities on novel reef ecosystems shaped by climate change.

In this study, we aimed to determine the in vitro activity of Leuconostoc mesenteroides var. mesenteroides isolated from sugar-industry effluents to produce a dextran bioflocculant from sucrose as a low-cost substrate. L. mesenteroides strains present in residual cane juice from a sugar factory were isolated and biochemically identified using Mayeux, Sandine, and Elliker agar (MSE) as a selective medium. The strain number 3 (LM03) was biochemically identified as L. mesenteroides var. mesenteroides, which was used for this study. The concentration of dextran was quantified by dry weight, the morphology and purity were evaluated using Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS). Flocculation was evaluated via turbidimetric assays in different pH ranges from sugar-industry effluents and doses of dextran. To evaluate the flocculant activity according to the effect of pH, a jar test kit from Phipps and Bird, USA, was used with the sample recollected from the effluent (sugar industry). The pH of the samples was adjusted to 7, 8, 9, 10 and 11, with a dose of 40 ppm (dextran dose) at a fast and slow speed of 150 and 50 rpm, respectively. To evaluate the influence of the dose of dextran, values of 5, 20 and 40 ppm were used with fast speeds of 180-150 rpm and slow speeds of 30-50 rpm, respectively. The strain (LM03) was able to produce the highest concentration of dextran (26.87 g/L) in 76 h of incubation. The presence of dextran was identified in the MSE agar after incubation and characterized by FTIR, SEM, and EDS. Besides that, we observed that the best flocculation activity was observed at a pH of 9 and a concentration of 40 ppm of dextran, with a fast agitation speed of 150 rpm for 5 min and a slow agitation speed of 50 rpm for 15 min, achieving 77.7% removal of turbidity from the sugar factory effluent. L. mesenteroides was responsible for the bioflocculation of dextran in different sugar-industry effluents. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Measurements of two-particle correlations on transverse momentum $p_t$ for Au-Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}} = 130$ GeV are presented. Significant large-momentum-scale correlations are observed for charged primary hadrons with $0.15 \leq p_t \leq 2$ GeV/$c$ and pseudorapidity $|\eta| \leq 1.3$. Such correlations were not observed in a similar study at lower energy and are not predicted by theoretical collision models. Their direct relation to mean-$p_t$ fluctuations measured in the same angular acceptance is demonstrated. Positive correlations are observed for pairs of particles which have large $p_t$ values while negative correlations occur for pairs in which one particle has large $p_t$ and the other has much lower $p_t$. The correlation amplitudes per final state particle increase with collision centrality. The observed correlations are consistent with a scenario in which the transverse momentum of hadrons associated with initial-stage semi-hard parton scattering is dissipated by the medium to lower $p_t$., Comment: 12 pages, 5 figures
