While right ventricular (RV) involvement is commonly observed in patients with cardiac sarcoidosis (CS), the utility of strain imaging to detect RV involvement is unclear. We aimed to investigate the association between RV free wall longitudinal strain (RVFWLS) and cardiovascular events in patients with CS.We studied 51 patients with CS who were diagnosed between 2012 and 2020. All patients underwent comprehensive echocardiographic evaluation, and RVFWLS was assessed using 2-dimensional speckle tracking echocardiography. The primary outcome was major adverse cardiovascular events (MACEs).During a median follow-up duration of 548 days, 11 patients exhibited MACEs. In the univariable Cox proportional hazards model, the baseline RVFWLS was associated with MACEs (hazard ratio: 1.29, p = 0.008). The addition of RVFWLS to the conventional echocardiographic parameters exhibited a significant incremental value associated with MACEs. Patients with reduced RVFWLS showed a higher prevalence of late gadolinium enhancement on cardiac magnetic resonance imaging in RV wall (p = 0.02) and trends toward higher prevalence of fluorodeoxyglucose uptake in RV (p = 0.06). A serial echocardiographic evaluation revealed that patients with events showed a worsening in RVFWLS, while others showed a trend toward improvement.Impaired RVFWLS at baseline was associated with MACEs in patients with CS. RVFWLS could be an important surrogate of disease activity and prognosis by detecting active RV involvement in CS.

Left-ventricular (LV) global longitudinal strain (GLS) has been reported to be a robust and sensitive marker of chemotherapy-induced cardiac damage. Image quality is paramount for accurate GLS measurements. In real-world cardio-oncology settings, the incidence of suboptimal echocardiography quality and its significance in clinical decision-making have not been well investigated. This prospective study examined the incidence and impact of suboptimal echocardiographic image quality on detecting subtle myocardial damage by chemotherapy.Seventy-seven consecutive patients with breast cancer (age, 52 ± 12 years, 76 women, 33 with left-sided breast cancer) were included in this study. Echocardiography was performed at 3-month intervals 1 year before and after chemotherapy initiation. We classified the image quality of each echocardiographic acquisition into three groups: optimal, suboptimal, or inadequate for speckle tracking.Among the 376 examinations obtained during the cardiac monitoring, the image quality in 194 (52%) was optimal, suboptimal in 159 (42%), and inadequate in 23 (6%). The interobserver reproducibility was 0.91 in the optimal and 0.21 in the suboptimal group. In contrast, the optimal group showed progressive impairment in both GLS (p = 0.001) and LV ejection fraction (LVEF) (p 0.001) during follow-up, and the suboptimal group showed a progressive decrease in LVEF (p = 0.006), but not in GLS (p = 0.13). Left-sided mammotomy and/or reconstruction surgery and high body mass index were significant determinants of suboptimal image quality.Even in cases of minor image quality impairment, the physician should assess GLS carefully to avoid errors in crucial clinical decision-making.

Background Interruption in Doppler intrarenal venous flow (IRVF) has been used in assessing renal congestion and in the prediction of prognosis of cardiovascular diseases. However, there is a paucity of pathophysiological knowledge, so we aimed to clarify the determinants of IRVF interruption.Methods and Results:Intrarenal Doppler studies were performed within 24 h before right-side catheterization studies. The interruption in IRVF in 73 patients was divided into a continuous pattern, and 4 discontinuous types based on the timing of interruption. Type 1, with an interruption in early systole, was associated with a-wave elevation of right atrial pressure (RAP). Type 2, with an interruption in early diastole, was associated with v-wave elevation, tricuspid regurgitation (TR), and right ventricular dysfunction. Both Type 1 and 2 were observed even in the normal range of mean RAP. Type 3, with an interruption throughout systole, was observed in advanced right heart failure patients with markedly elevated RAP, particularly elevated x-descend and atrial fibrillation. Finally, Type 4, with limited flow at systole, was observed in 2 of the patients with pulmonary arterial hypertension. Conclusions IRVF interruption was closely related to RAP elevation at each specific point of the cardiac cycle rather than to mean RAP levels, suggesting that the characteristics of IRVF mirror right-sided heart hemodynamics, not mean RAP.

Objective Onco-cardiology services are expanding rapidly in Japan. To provide a better service, it is important to consider the needs of oncologists. However, little is known regarding specific needs for which oncologists should consult cardiologists to manage cardiovascular problems of their patients. We analysed cardiology consultations sought by oncologists to evaluate the role of cardiologists in cancer treatment. Method We retrospectively investigated consecutive 2064 cardiology consultations of cancer patients in the University of Tsukuba Hospital, Tsukuba, Japan, between January 2014 and December 2018. Results The most common timing of cardiology consultation was before the commencement of cancer treatment (n = 1355; 65.7%), followed by after the commencement of cancer treatment (n = 686; 33.2%). Among the 361 consultations before the administration of anticancer drugs, 235 (65.1%) were for anthracycline-based regimens. There were 506 (24.5%) consultations for the management of cardiovascular emergencies developing after the commencement of cancer treatment; venous thromboembolism was the most frequent (n = 125; 24.7%), followed by atrial fibrillation (n = 110; 21.7%) and heart failure (n = 74; 14.6%). There were marked differences in the types of cardiovascular emergencies depending on the type of cancer. Conclusions This survey revealed the various cardiovascular problems for which oncologists sought interventions by cardiologists. A multidisciplinary approach in an onco-cardiology service is essential to achieve optimal long-term outcomes.

Mouse myoblast C2C12 cells are commonly used as a model system for investigating the metabolic regulation of skeletal muscle. As it is therefore important to understand the metabolic features of C2C12 cells, we examined the effect of glucose starvation on autophagy in C2C12 myotubes. After culture of C2C12 myotubes with high (HG, 25.0 mM) or low (LG, 5.6 mM) glucose concentrations, the concentration of glucose in the LG group had decreased to 0 mM after 24 h of culture and was around 17 mM after 48 h of culture in the HG group. The concentration of lactate increased from 0 to approximately 9 mM at 24 h and then dropped slightly in the LG group, while it increased linearly to 21 mM in the HG group at 48 h. The phosphorylation of p70 S6 kinase, marker for the protein translation initiation was significantly lower and the ratio of LC3-II/LC3-I, marker for the induction of autophagy was significantly higher in the LG group. GLUT1 and hexokinase II expression were significantly higher in the LG group. Together, these changes in glucose and lactate concentrations in the culture media suggest that C2C12 myotubes depend on anaerobic glycolysis. Our findings also suggest that glucose depletion stimulates the expression of key molecules involved in glycolysis and that cellular autophagy is also activated in C2C12 myotubes.

We examined the effects of branched-chain amino acids (BCAAs) and electrical pulse stimulation (EPS) on the mTORC1 pathway in muscle satellite cells (MSCs) isolated from branched-chain α-keto acid dehydrogenase kinase (BDK) knockout (KO) mice in vitro. MSCs were isolated from BDK KO and wild-type (WT) mice, proliferated, and differentiated into myotubes. BCAA stimulation increased the phosphorylation of p70 S6 kinase (p70S6K), a marker of protein translation initiation, in MSCs from WT and BDK KO mice, but the rate of the increase was higher in MSCs isolated from BDK KO mice. Contrarily, there was no difference in the increase in p70S6K phosphorylation by EPS. Acute BDK knockdown in MSCs from WT mice using shRNA decreased p70S6K phosphorylation in response to BCAA stimulation. Collectively, the susceptibility of mTORC1 to BCAA stimulation was elevated by chronic, but not acute, enhancement of BCAA catabolism.

The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of a low-carbohydrate high-protein (LCHP) diet on the expression of glucose transporters and their relationships to glucose metabolism. Male C57BL/6 mice were fed a normal control or LCHP diet for 2 weeks. An oral glucose tolerance test and insulin tolerance test (ITT) were performed, and the expression of glucose transporters was determined in the gastrocnemius muscle, jejunum and pancreas. The increase in plasma insulin concentrations after glucose administration was reduced in the LCHP group. However, LCHP diet had no effects on peripheral insulin sensitivity or glucose transporters expression in the gastrocnemius and pancreas. Soluble glucose transporter (SGLT)-1 protein content in jejunum was lower in the LCHP group. Taken together, these results suggest that the blunted insulin response after glucose administration in LCHP diet-fed mice might be due to decreased SGLT-1 expression, but not to an increase in peripheral insulin sensitivity. As the number of cancer survivors increases, cardiac management in anthracycline-treated patients has become more important. We planned to conduct a prospective multicenter registry study for comprehensive echocardiographic and biomarker data collection and an evaluation of the current practice in terms of diagnosis and management of anthracycline-induced cardiotoxicity (AIC registry). To examine the feasibility of this registry study, we analyzed the 1-year follow-up data of 97 patients registered during the first year of this registry. The AIC registry was launched in July 2016. Data on echocardiographic parameters (e.g., two-and three-dimensional [(2- and 3-D) left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) and global longitudinal strain (GLS)) and biomarkers (e.g., troponin T and brain natriuretic peptide) were collected before anthracycline treatment, every 3 months during the first year after starting anthracycline, and every 6 months during the second year. Eighty-three patients (86%) completed a 1-year follow-up. The measurable rates of 2D LVEF, 3D LVEF, and GLS on each visit were nearly optimal (100%, 86–93%, and 84–94%, respectively). During the 1-year follow-up, 5 patients (6.0%) developed cardiotoxicity (a reduction in LVEF ≥ 10 percentage points from baseline and &lt, 55%). The AIC registry study is feasible and will be the first study to collect sizable echocardiographic and biomarker data on cardiotoxicity in Japanese patients treated with anthracycline in a real-world setting.

An essential element of sub-15 nm nanoimprint lithography is to create fine patterns on a template. However, it is challenging to create sub-15 nm half-pitch patterns on a template by direct drawing with a resist, owing to poor resolution and low sensitivity. We are currently researching the development of sub-15 nm half-pitch patterns by applying self-aligned double patterning on a template. The defect density of the template has not yet reached a high-volume manufacturing level. The aim of our study is to achieve a defect density of less than 1 pcs/cm2 for sub-15 nm templates. To achieve this, we need to overcome stochastics-induced resist defects. We aim to determine the mechanism of defect formation by observing the details of the defects. We challenged resist-pattern inspections using a grazing-incidence coherent scatterometry microscope, which illuminated an extreme ultraviolet light to the resist pattern and detected the diffraction signal from the pattern. This study was conducted in collaboration with University of Hyogo and Kioxia Corporation. In this paper, we present the results of damage evaluations and resist-pattern inspections.

Background Lead-induced tricuspid regurgitation (TR) after cardiac implantable electronic device (CIED) implantation is not fully understood. This study aimed to reveal the features of lead-induced TR by 3-dimensional echocardiography (3DE) in patients with heart failure (HF) events after CIED implantation.Methods and Results:In 143 patients, 3DE assessments for the tricuspid valve (TV) and right ventricular morphologies were sequentially performed within 3 days after CIED implantations, during TR exacerbations, and at ≥6 months after TR exacerbations. TR exacerbations were observed in 29 patients (median 10 months after CIED implantation, range 1-28 months), 15 of whom had lead-induced TR. In the 29 patients, the tenting height of the TV, tricuspid annular (TA) height, and TA area at baseline were independent predictors for worsening TR. In patients with lead-induced TR, tenting height of the TV and TA area were identified as the risk factors. In addition, all patients with a lead positioned on a leaflet immediately after CIED implantations developed lead-induced TR. At follow up, TR exacerbation of lead-induced TR persisted with TA remodeling, but it was improved in the lead non-related-TR group. Conclusions TA remodeling at baseline and a lead location on a leaflet immediately after CIED implantation were associated with lead-induced TR in patients with HF events after CIED implantation. Persistent TA remodeling may make lead-induced TR refractory against HF treatments.

Cells starved of glucose for 24 h showed enhanced phosphorylation of p70S6K in response to re‐addition of glucose. Pharmacological inhibition studies revealed that autophagy under glucose starvation partially accounts for this effect. The results of the present study suggest that appropriate nutrient starvation can modulate cellular protein turnover and may be effective at improving muscle protein synthesis., Proteolysis is known to play a crucial role in maintaining skeletal muscle mass and function. Autophagy is a conserved intracellular process for the bulk degradation of proteins in lysosomes. Although nutrient starvation is known to induce autophagy, the effect of nutrient repletion following starvation on the mTOR pathway‐mediated protein translation remains unclear. In the present study, we examined the effect of glucose starvation on the initiation of protein translation in response to glucose re‐addition in C2C12 myotubes. Glucose starvation decreased the phosphorylation of p70 S6 kinase (p70S6K), a bonafide marker for protein translation initiation. Following re‐addition of glucose, phosphorylation of p70S6K markedly increased only in glucose‐starved cells. Inhibiting autophagy using pharmacological inhibitors diminished the effect of glucose re‐addition on the phosphorylation of p70S6K, whereas inhibition of the ubiquitin‐proteasome system did not exert any effect. In conclusion, autophagy under glucose starvation partially accounts for the activation of translation initiation by re‐addition of glucose.

Cardiac implantable electronic devices (CIED) implantations may cause lead-induced tricuspid regurgitation (LITR). Although patients with CIED have the risk of functional non-lead induced TR (Non-LITR). This study aimed to compare of clinical outcome between LITR and Non-LITR. The mechanism of TR was determined by 3-dimensional echocardiography. The primary end point was heart failure (HF) hospitalizations after CIED implantation. In patients with HF events, subsequent clinical outcomes after HF hospitalization were compared between no TR, LITR, and Non-LITR groups. In eligible 373 patients, 67 patients had HF hospitalization, of whom worsened TR was observed in 49 patients. In the remaining 307 patients, worsened TR was observed in only 10 patients (3.3%). Of the 49 patients with worsened TR, 18 patients (37%) had LITR. In 67 patients with HF hospitalization, 25 patients (37%) met rehospitalization. All severe LITR persisted after HF events. Meanwhile, severe Non-LITR improved to moderate or mild level. Cox proportional hazard model analyses revealed LITR was the independent risk factor of rehospitalization. Both LITR and Non-LITR were common at HF events after CIED implantations. However, LITR persisted and might contribute to a worse prognosis. In patients with TR after CIED implantations, 3-dimensional echocardiography should be performed to diagnose the LITR accurately, which may contribute to improving the clinical outcome.

It remains unclear whether intrarenal venous flow (IRVF) patterns in patients with heart failure (HF) could change over the clinical course, and whether the changes could have a clinical impact. Thus, this study aimed to clarify these characteristics as well as to identify the relation between changes in the IRVF pattern and renal impairment progression.Patients with HF with repetitive IRVF evaluations were enrolled. Doppler waveforms of IRVF were classified into the following 3 flow patterns: continuous, biphasic discontinuous, and monophasic discontinuous. Primary end points included death from cardiovascular diseases and unplanned hospitalization for HF. Finally, 108 patients with adequate images were enrolled. The IRVF in 35 patients (32.4%) shifted to another pattern at the follow-up examinations. The median brain natriuretic peptide level in the continuous flow pattern at follow-up was significantly decreased (183 to 60 pg/mL, P.001), whereas that of the discontinuous flow pattern at follow-up was increased (from 339 to 366 pg/mL, P = .042) and the estimated glomerular filtration rate was decreased (from 55 to 50 mL/min/1.73 mThe IRVF pattern could be changed depending on the status of congestion. Persistent or worsened renal congestion, represented by discontinuous flow patterns, during the clinical courses indicated a poor prognosis accompanied by renal impairment in patients with HF.

Nanoimprint lithography (NIL) is promising technology for next generation lithography for the fabrication of semiconductor devices. The advantages of NIL are simpler process, less design rule restriction, which lead to lower cost-of-ownership, compared with conventional optical lithography. NIL is one to one lithography and contact transfer technique using template. Therefore template quality variations impact on wafer performance directly. To introduce NIL technology to high volume manufacturing (HVM) of semiconductor devices, improvement of template quality is very important. In the situation of pattern size shrinking, it is necessary to improve CD uniformity and defectivity to achieve the target of HVM. So that high accuracy QA (Quality Assurance) tools are required to qualify CD uniformity and defectivity which are key metrics on high-end template development. In this paper, we show the current status of template development for sub15nm NIL. For the template fabrication, double patterning technologies were applied to extend pattern resolution limit. Template replication was also implemented by template replication system Canon FPA1100-NR2. Finally we will show QA examples for high accuracy template by using key metrics such as CD uniformity, defectivity and Cross-sectional profile.

Thrombus embolization is a rare consequence of ultrasonographic examination of the vessels of the lower limbs. We present a case of a 77-year-old woman with lung cancer who developed pulmonary embolism originating from the right femoral deep vein thrombus during the compression maneuver of the ultrasonographic examination of the lower limbs. This study clarified the characteristics of intrarenal Doppler ultrasonography (IRD) profiles and their prognostic implications in heart failure (HF).IRD can assess intrarenal hemodynamics.Initially, 224 patients with HF were prospectively enrolled; 151 inpatients were enrolled during hospitalization for HF, and 73 were outpatients in our institution. In IRD profiles of interlobar vessels, the arterial resistance index (RI), venous impedance index (VII), and intrarenal venous flow (IRVF) pattern were assessed. Patients were followed to evaluate the associations with 1-year prognosis. Primary endpoints included death from cardiovascular disease and unplanned hospitalization for HF.Finally, 217 patients with adequate IRD images were enrolled. IRD profiles were associated with conventional risk factors for HF. In particular, IRVF was associated with mean right atrial pressure (RAP); 3 IRVF patterns were stratified by RAP (in a continuous pattern: 5.4 ± 2.5; in a biphasic pattern: 9.5 ± 3.5; and in a monophasic pattern: 14.9 ± 4.3 mm Hg; p 0.001). In addition, the monophasic IRVF pattern had a poorer prognosis than the other patterns (log rank p 0.001), and prognosis was poorer for the biphasic pattern than for the continuous flow pattern (log rank p = 0.01). Multivariate Cox proportional hazard model analysis revealed that IRVF patterns were associated with the endpoints, independent of other HF risk factors.IRVF patterns, rather than RI, depended on RAP, suggesting a correlation with renal congestion. In addition, IRVF patterns strongly correlated with clinical outcomes independent of RAP and other risk factors and might provide additional information to stratify vulnerable HF patients.

Adult patients with repaired coarctation of the aorta (r-CoA) show high prevalence of late hypertension, but the exact mechanisms of this phenomenon are unknown. Endothelial dysfunction has been implicated in this paradoxical hypertension. We evaluated the endothelial function of both conduit and resistance arteries by using flow-mediated dilation (FMD) and digital peripheral artery tonometry (PAT).Seventeen patients with r-CoA and one patient with repaired interrupted aortic arch (r-CoA group) aged 22.0 ± 6.9 years (5 females) underwent FMD of the right brachial artery, PAT of the right finger, blood marker tests, ambulatory blood pressure monitoring, echocardiography, carotid ultrasonography, and brachio-ankle pulse wave velocity measurement. The median age at aortic arch reconstruction was 2.0 months (interquartile range: 15 days to 7.0 years). Results were compared with 17 age-matched healthy subjects (control group).Eight (44%) patients of the r-CoA group were hypertensive (5 received antihypertensive drugs). Patients in the r-CoA group showed significantly lower FMD (3.8 ± 1.5 versus 6.6 ± 2.5%, P < 0.001), larger intima-media thickness (0.63 ± 0.17 versus 0.47 ± 0.09 mm, P = 0.001), and higher left ventricular mass index (91.4 ± 24.6 versus 73.4 ± 17.3 g/m2, P = 0.017) than those in the control group. There were no significant differences in PAT (refractory hyperemia index, 1.86 ± 0.43 versus 1.99 ± 0.59, P = 0.48) and brachio-ankle pulse wave velocity between the two groups.Vascular dysfunction in r-CoA patients, particularly endothelial dysfunction, tends to occur more significantly in conduit arteries than in resistance arteries.

In the management of heart failure (HF), decongestion is critical for improving clinical outcomes in addition to patients’ symptoms. Although physicians accept this theory, there are no established markers for the achievement of optimal decongestion status. Organ congestion, in particular liver and kidney congestion, has recently attracted substantial attention. Ultrasound methods have been introduced for assessing organ congestion, although this is merely a preliminary step. Here, we review the clinical implications of the assessment of organ congestion by ultrasound.

Background Long-axis images of the inferior vena cava (IVC) have limitations as surrogates for IVC morphology in grading central venous pressure (CVP) by two-dimensional echocardiography (2DE), because of the various cross-sectional morphologies and the translational motion of the IVC induced by sniffing. On the basis of the relationship between venous pressure and compliance, it was hypothesized that the cross-sectional morphology of the IVC, which was obtained using three-dimensional echocardiography, might estimate CVP more accurately compared with standard grading by 2DE. With shrinking pattern size, mask 3D effects are estimated to become stronger, such as horizontal/vertical shadowing, best focus shifts through pitch and pattern shift through focus. To reduce these mask 3D effects, we have proposed etched multilayer EUV mask structure and have also reported on the fabrication process of etched multilayer EUV mask, in which line and space mask patterning has been demonstrated. And by using etched multilayer EUV mask, the reduction of mask 3D effects is experimentally demonstrated. In our previous study, we have shown etched multilayer EUV mask has enough durability against chemical erosion in suitable cleaning process. In this work, to meet the demands of different variation on pattern in etched multilayer mask, especially fabrication process for sub-60nm pattern based on effective mirror width in dark-field exposure is studied. 60 nm pillar pattern on mask is obtained using negative tone resist with keeping resolution of line and space pattern. We also examined CD characteristics 60 nm line and space pattern in consideration of effective mirror width. This work represents that etched multilayer EUV mask is ready for dark-field exposure of 15 nm pattern in wafer.

In patients with chronic aortic regurgitation (AR), systolic wall stress and volume overload affects left ventricular (LV) systolic function and remodeling. The aim of this study was to assess transmural rearrangements of myocardial deformation to preserve LV ejection performances using speckle-tracking echocardiography in patients with chronic AR.Ninety patients with AR were enrolled. On LV short-axis images, total, inner, and outer radial strain and circumferential strain at the inner, mid, and outer layers were calculated. On apical four-chamber images, endocardial longitudinal strain was calculated. End-systolic wall stresses were calculated using previous methods.AR severities were classified as moderate in 31 patients, severe and preserved LV ejection fraction (LVEF) (≥50%) in 42 patients, and severe and reduced LVEF (50%) in 17 patients. Longitudinal strain was decreased even in the moderate AR group, despite normal end-systolic wall stress. Inner radial strain progressively decreased with increasing end-systolic wall stress, whereas outer radial strain in the moderate and severe AR and preserved LVEF groups was higher than in the control group. Consequently, total radial strain was preserved even in the severe AR and preserved LVEF groups with increased end-systolic wall stress. Similarly, despite reduced inner circumferential strain, outer circumferential strain was higher in the severe AR and preserved LVEF group than in the control group. All strain parameters were lower in the severe AR and reduced LVEF group with dramatically increased end-systolic wall stress than in other groups.Transmural strain analysis revealed that subendocardial dysfunction accompanied by increased wall thickening at the subepicardium may be a compensatory mechanism of wall thickening to preserve LVEF in patients with chronic AR.

With shrinking pattern size at 0.33NA EUV lithography systems, mask 3D effects are expected to become stronger, such as horizontal/vertical shadowing, best focus shifts through pitch and pattern shift through focus. Etched multilayer EUV mask structures have been proposed in order to reduce mask 3D effects. It is estimated that etched multilayer type mask is also effective in reducing mask 3D effects at 0.33NA with lithographic simulation, and it is experimentally demonstrated with NXE3300 EUV Lithography system. We obtained cross-sectional TEM image of etched multilayer EUV mask pattern. It is observed that patterned multilayer width differs from pattern physical width. This means that effective reflecting width of etched multilayer pattern is smaller than pattern width measured by CD-SEM. In this work, we evaluate mask durability against both chemical and physical cleaning process to check the feasibility of etched multilayer EUV mask patterning against mask cleaning for 0.33NA EUV extension. As a result, effective width can be controlled by suitable cleaning chemicals because sidewall film works as a passivation film. And line and space pattern collapse is not detected by DUV mask pattern inspection tool after mask physical cleaning that includes both megasonic and binary spray steps with sufficient particle removal efficiency.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of calcium carbonate and saccharides on the feeding behavior of newly hatched larvae of the silkworm, Bombyx mori L. Japanese strains, “Hi”, “KAI”, “Ryo” and “Yo”, and Chinese strains, “Kai”, “Bono”, “Kenpaku” and “Tsukuba”, were used for the experiments. Calcium carbonate (CaCO3) and sucrose were added to the basal diet, consisting of cellulose powder, agar and distilled water. This was fed to the larvae immediately after they hatched. It was found that the feeding of any variety of silkworm was improved by the synergetic effects of CaCO3 and sucrose. The amount of feeding for “Kai” and “Bono”, however, were notably less than those of the other varieties. Next, diets containing CaCO3 and two kinds of saccharides were fed to both the “Kai” and “Bono”. The amount of diet consumed by “Kai” and “Bono” remarkably increased when CaCO3 was used together with sucrose and myo-inositol, and CaCO3 together with glucose and myo-inositol, respectively. The above results indicated that CaCO3 combined with sucrose or other saccharides synergistically stimulated larval appetite. Also it was found that CaCO3 could restrict larval movement to the area immediately surrounding the diet.

We investigated whether a compensatory vasoconstrictor action would be induced by a hypotensive intervention in the hindquarter vascular region of conscious spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHRs). Mean arterial pressure and hindquarter blood flow were recorded. After hemorrhage (withdrawing blood, 0.3 ml/100 g body weight), hindquarter resistance (HQR) was increased significantly. The decrease in HQR induced by the administration of a ganglionic blocker (C6; 25 mg/kg, i.v.) was significantly greater in SHRs with hemorrhage than in those without hemorrhage. The present results suggest that a detectable hindquarter compensator tone occurs due to hemorrhage in SHRs, although an abnormal substantial vasoconstrictor tone already exists in the hindquarters.

We report 2 cases in which transcatheter arterial embolization (TAE) was successful in treating blunt thoracic trauma. Case 1: A 23-year-old man was found by chest computed tomography (CT) to have multiple rib fractures and lung hematoma. Hemorrhage from a chest tube was estimated at more than 1000ml. We immediately conducted bronchial and intercostal angiography and found stains suggesting hemorrhage. We conducted TAE for these arteries, successfully controlling hemorrhage. Ensuing surgery confirmed the success of TAE. Case 2: A 58-year-old man was found by chest CT to have multiple rib fractures and lung hematoma. Hemorrhage from an endotracheal tube was estimated at more than 100ml/hr. Bronchial angiography showed stains suggesting hemorrhage. TAE of the bronchial artery enabled hemorrhage from the tracheal tube to be controlled. Both cases showed TAE to be successful in avoiding lung resection and thus useful in blunt thoracic trauma treatment.

We investigated the enhancement of the secondary ion intensity in the TOF-SIMS spectra obtained by Au + and Au 3 + bombardment in comparison with Ga + excitation using polymer samples with different molecular weight distributions. Since the polymer samples used in this experiment have a wide molecular weight distribution, the advantages of the gold cluster primary ion source over monoatomic ion could accurately be evaluated. It was observed that the degree of fragmentation decreased by the usage of cluster primary ion beam compared with monoatomic ion beam, which was observed as a shift of the intensity distribution in the spectra. It was also found out that the mass effect of Au + and Ga + as monoatomic primary ion, resulted in about 10-60 times of enhancement for both samples with different molecular distributions. On the other hand, the Au 3 + bombardment caused intensity enhancement about 100-2600 compared with Ga + bombardment, depending on the mass range of the detected secondary ion species. The cluster primary ion effect of Au 3 + , compared with Au + , therefore, was estimated to be about 10-45.

cDNAs encoding the long-chain acyl-CoA hydrolases (ACHs) from rat brain and liver, referred to as rBACH and rLACH1, respectively, were isolated and sequenced. The rBACH cDNA contained an open reading frame encoding a 338-amino acid polypeptide with a calculated molecular weight of 37,559, of which the deduced amino acid sequence matched partial amino acid sequences directly determined for peptides generated by tryptic digestion or CNBr cleavage of purified rBACH. The rLACH1 cDNA contained an open reading frame encoding a 343-amino acid polypeptide with a molecular weight of 38,240. When expressed in Escherichia coli, these cDNAs produced palmitoyl-CoA hydrolase activity and 44-kDa proteins with molecular masses similar to those of purified rBACH and rLACH1 (43 kDa). These expressed proteins and enzyme activity were immunoblotted and neutralized, respectively, by anti-rBACH or anti-rLACH1 antibodies. rLACH1 cDNA had 84 and 94% identity with rBACH cDNA at the nucleotide and amino acid levels, respectively. However, the 5′-end of the former cDNA which contained the N-terminal coding region of rLACH1 was entirely different from the corresponding region of rBACH cDNA, suggesting that these enzymes may be generated by alternative use of exons of the same gene. Northern blot analysis showed that ACH mRNA was expressed constitutively in the rat brain and testis, whereas its expression in the liver was inducible by treatment with the peroxisome proliferator. This study demonstrated the molecular diversity of ACH and suggested the presence of tissue-specific mechanisms to regulate the ACH gene expression.

We recently reported characterization of 25 clones isolated from a phage library displaying human scFvs using a neoglycolipid Man3-DPPE, which was synthesized from mannotriose (Man3) and dipalmitoylphosphatidylethanolamine (DPPE). Of those, 5A3 scFv was successfully expressed and purified as a humanized scFv-Fc form (Sakai et al., Biochemistry 46:253, 2007, Zhang et al. ibid 263). To carry out immunohistochemistry (IHC) in human tissues, a HA tag sequence was introduced to the 5A3 scFv-Fc gene and the resulting construct was transfected to murine myeloma NS0 cells. The 5A3 scFv-Fc protein expressed was affinity-purified. Sodium dodecyl sulfate polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis under nonreducing and reducing conditions and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay confirmed that 5A3 scFv-Fc protein is dimeric and retained the ability to recognize nonreducing terminal mannose residues. IHC staining of non-neoplastic tissues by this recombinant antibody revealed that no immunoreactivity was detectable in most of 16 tissues examined. Exceptions were found in IHC staining of kidney and pancreas, which demonstrated clear staining of proximal tubules and islet of Langerhans, respectively. These results demonstrated that nonreducing terminal mannose residues are not usually present under normal physiological conditions. This study thus provided a potentially useful tool for examination of the nonreducing terminal mannose residues, which may become exposed under certain pathophysiologycal conditions.

A new set of empirical formulas for the production rate and the number concentration of sea-water droplets on the sea surface are proposed, synthesizing past observation data of sea-salt particles in the sea and water droplets in wind-wave tanks. A new levelz c is introduced as the effective wind-sea surface where seawater droplets are produced. The new formulas are expressed in linear functions in logarithmic scales ofu*2/vσ p , a parameter to describe overall conditions of airsea boundary processes, whereu * is the friction velocity of air,v the kinematic viscosity of air and σ p the peak angular frequency of wind-wave part of wave spectra. A model of coexistence of spray droplets and suspended particles near the sea surface is proposed. As for the independent parameter, a comparison between the uses ofu*2/vσ p and ofu * 3 which was the traditional way of parameterization excluding wave measure, shows that the advantage of usingu*2/vσ p is statistically significant with a confidence limit 89% in F-test.

The left atrial volume (LAV) is an important indicator of the severity of certain diseases, and measuring LAV through the cardiac cycle may enable the evaluation of various left atrium (LA) functional parameters. The results of two-dimensional (2D) echocardiographic LAV measurement methods vary, and no technique is accepted as being optimal. This study compared the accuracy of end-systolic and end-diastolic LAV measurements by 2D echocardiography with those obtained by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Fifty consecutive patients who underwent both echocardiography and MRI due to clinical reasons with nonselective cardiac disease were studied. Potential myocardial dysfunction may be present in patients with significant aortic regurgitation (AR) and preserved left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF). Newly developed software for speckle tracking imaging (STI) allows separate analysis of endo- and epimyocardial strain. The aim of this study was to assess the relationship between endo- and epimyocardial radial strain (RS) distribution and AR severity in identifying the potential myocardial dysfunction in patients with significant AR and LVEF>50%, and its correlation with postoperative LV function. We studied 47 patients with AR and 26 control subjects. Degree of AR was classified according to standard echocardiographic criteria as moderate in 16 and severe in 23 patients. STI was analyzed with the new software (Toshiba Medical Systems, Tokyo, Japan). For STI analysis, an endocardial and epicardial border line were each manually traced at end-systole on a short-axis B-mode image at the mid-ventricular level; peak RS of total, endomyocardium, and epicardium were automatically calculated. Endomyocardial RS was reduced in patients with severe AR compared to control subjects and patients with moderate AR (Figure ). Distribution of the wind stress over the oceans is usually estimated by using a bulk formula. It contains the squared 10-m wind speed multiplied by the drag coefficient, which has been assumed in many cases to be a weak function of the 10-m wind speed. Over land the important role of thermal stratification has been clearly recognized, but over the sea the influence of wind waves is less well documented. This paper presents evidence showing the likelihood that the influence of the wind waves can also be large. An acyl-CoA hydrolase, referred to as hBACH, was purified from human brain cytosol. The enzyme had a molecular mass of 100 kDa and 43-kDa subunits, and was highly active with long-chain acyl-CoAs, e.g. a maximal velocity of 295 micromol/min/mg and K(m) of 6.4 microM for palmitoyl-CoA. Acyl-CoAs with carbon chain lengths of C(8-18) were also good substrates. In human brain cytosol, 85% of palmitoyl-CoA hydrolase activity was titrated by an anti-BACH antibody, which accounted for over 75% of the enzyme activity found in the brain tissue. The cDNA isolated for hBACH, when expressed in Escherichia coli, directed the expression of palmitoyl-CoA hydrolase activity and a 44-kDa protein immunoreactive to the anti-BACH antibody, which in turn neutralized the hydrolase activity. The hBACH cDNA encoded a 338-amino acid sequence which was 95% identical to that of a rat homolog. The hBACH gene spanned about 130 kb and comprised 9 exons, and was mapped to 1p36.2 on the cytogenetic ideogram. These findings indicate that the long-chain acyl-CoA hydrolase present in the brain is well conserved between man and the rat, suggesting a conserved role for this enzyme in the mammalian brain, and enabling genetic studies on the functional analysis of acyl-CoA hydrolase.

The purposes of this study were to investigate the level of the sympathetic nervous system in which nitric oxide (NO) mediates regional sympathetic vasoconstriction and to determine whether neural mechanisms are involved in vasoconstriction after NO inhibition. Ganglionic blockade (hexamethonium), α1-receptor blockade (prazosin), and spinal section at T1 were used to study sympathetic involvement. NO was blocked with N ω-nitro-l-arginine methyl ester (l-NAME). Regional blood flow in the mesenteric and renal arteries and terminal aorta was monitored by electromagnetic flowmetry in conscious rats.l-NAME (3–5 mg/kg iv) increased arterial pressure and peripheral resistance. Ganglionic blockade (25 mg/kg iv) significantly reduced the increase in resistance in the mesentery and kidney in intact and spinal-sectioned rats. Ganglionic blockade significantly decreased hindquarter resistance in intact rats but not in spinal-sectioned rats. Prazosin (200 μg/kg iv) significantly reduced the increased hindquarter resistance. We concluded that NO suppresses sympathetic vasoconstriction in the mesentery and kidney at the spinal level, whereas hindquarter tone is mediated at supraspinal and synaptic levels.

Abstract The aims of this study were to elucidate the vasoconstrictor mechanism that mediates the changes in celiac and mesenteric vascular resistances during vasoconstriction and hypotension induced by ganglionic blockade and to explore the preferential mechanism that contributes to the elevation of arterial pressure in conscious spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR). In conscious SHR and normotensive control rats, blood flow and arterial pressure were measured with an implanted electromagnetic flow probe and an indwelling arterial catheter. Peripheral vascular resistance was calculated as arterial pressure divided by regional flow. Celiac contribution to the hypertension in SHR was below average for the entire body and was smaller than that from the superior mesenteric bed. The increase of mesenteric resistance with arterial pressure elevation after ganglionic blockade suggests that mesenteric blood flow is regulated by a stretch-dependent myogenic mechanism, whereas celiac blood flow is regulated preferentially by the sympathetic neural mechanism. It is speculated that the flow superregulation in the mesenteric bed in SHR is due to the enhanced myogenic response and contributes to the early stage of hypertension.

Flow autoregulation in the arteriolar network serves to maintain the capillary-tissue fluid balance by regulation of capillary pressure. In the present study, we have examined theoretically the effects of arteriolar vasomotion and venous pressure elevation on the capillary fluid exchange, the interstitial fluid pressure, and the interstitial osmotic pressure during capillary pressure regulation. We used Starling's hypothesis and extended it to include a consideration of a parallel hetero-porous pathway and to determine the effects of plasma protein filtration on interstitial fluid pressure and osmotic pressure. We have found that arteriolar vasomotion plays a primary role in protecting the capillary-tissue fluid balance during the elevation of capillary flow and that it is a secondary mechanism for the regulation of capillary arterial pressure.

A mathematical model is introduced to investigate the influence of the physical properties of the resistance vessel wall on the metabolic and myogenic mechanisms. The resistance vessel wall is assumed to have an elastic property and the elastic modulus to be a function of pressure (myogenic) and flow (metabolic). Blood is Poiseuille's flow. The resulting mathematical equations for pressure-flow, pressure-diameter, pressure-wall tension and pressure-wall elastic modulus relationships introduced obey Laplace's law, Poiseuille's law and Hooke's law. In comparison with the experimental data (pressure-diameter), the mathematical model is confirmed to explain well the dynamic behavior of the resistance vessel wall in vivo .

A semi-empirical new model for steady blood flow in microvessels is proposed. In the model, a peripheral layer devoid of blood cells (called the plasma layer) is taken into account and the central core of blood surrounded by the plasma layer is assumed to obey the Herschel-Bulkley equation. The velocity distribution and the pressure-flow relation have been derived for the model. To study the rheological condition of the blood flow in arterioles, the model is compared with the experimental data obtained by Einav et al., using the Laser Doppler anemometry. It is found that the experimental data for velocity profiles are explained fairly well by this model, if appropriate values are chosen for parameters. A careful investigation of these data reveals that the blood flow in microvessels can be regarded apparently as a Newtonian flow owing to the presence of the plasma layer.
