Based on high-resolution spectra obtained with Magellan/MIKE, we present a chemo-dynamical analysis for 27 near main-sequence turnoff metal-poor stars, including 20 stars analyzed for the first time. The sample spans a range in [Fe/H] from -2.5 to -3.6, with 44% having [Fe/H] <-2.9. We derived chemical abundances for 17 elements, including strontium and barium. We derive Li abundances for the sample, which are in good agreement with the ``Spite Plateau'' value. A dozen of stars are carbon-enhanced. The lighter elements (Z<30) generally agree well with those of other low-metallicity halo stars. This broadly indicates chemically homogeneous gas at the earliest times. Of the neutron-capture elements, we only detected strontium and barium. We used the [Sr/Ba] vs. [Ba/Fe] diagram to classify metal-poor stars into five populations based on their observed ratios. We find HE0232-3755 to be a likely main r-process star, and HE2214-6127 and HE2332-3039 to be limited-r stars. CS30302-145, HE2045-5057, and CD-24 17504 plausibly originated in long-disrupted early dwarf galaxies as evidenced by their [Sr/Ba] and [Ba/Fe] ratios. We also find that the derived [Sr/H] and [Ba/H] values for CD-24 17504 are not inconsistent with the predicted yields of the s-process in massive rotating low-metallicity stars models. Further theoretical explorations will be helpful to better understand the earliest mechanisms and time scales of heavy element production for comparison with these and other observational abundance data. Finally, we investigate the orbital histories of our sample stars. Most display halo-like kinematics although three stars (CS29504-018, HE0223-2814, and HE2133-0421) appear to be disk-like in nature. This confirms the extragalactic origin for CS30302-145, HE2045-5057, and, in particular, CD-24 17504 which likely originated from a small accreted stellar system as one of the oldest stars.

We investigate the distribution of the lithium abundances, A(Li), of metal-poor dwarf and subgiant stars within the limits 5500 K < Teff < 6700 K, -6.0 < [Fe/H] < -1.5, and logg > ~3.5 (a superset of parameters first adopted by Spite and Spite), using literature data for some 200 stars. We address the problem of the several methods that yield Teff differences up to 350 K, and hence uncertainties of 0.3 dex in [Fe/H] and A(Li), by anchoring Teff to the Infrared Flux Method. We seek to understand the behaviour of A(Li) as a function of [Fe/H] -- small dispersion at highest [Fe/H], ``meltdown'' at intermediate values (i.e. large spread in Li below the Spite Plateau), and extreme variations at lowest [Fe/H]. Decreasing A(Li) is accompanied by increasing dispersion. Insofar as [Fe/H] increases as the universe ages, the behavior of A(Li) reflects chaotic star formation involving destruction of primordial Li, which settles to the classic Spite Plateau, with A(Li) ~2.3, by the time the Galactic halo reaches [Fe/H] ~ -3.0. We consider three phases: (1) first star formation in C-rich environments ([C/Fe] > 2.3), with depleted Li; (2) silicates-dominated star formation and destruction of primordial Li during pre-main-sequence evolution; and (3) materials from these two phases co-existing and coalescing to form C-rich stars with A(Li) below the Spite Plateau, leading to a toy model with the potential to explain the ``meltdown''. We present chemical abundances and velocities of five stars between 0.3 kpc to 1.1 kpc from the center of the Tucana II ultra-faint dwarf galaxy (UFD) from high-resolution Magellan/MIKE spectroscopy. We find that every star is deficient in metals (-3.6 < [Fe/H] < -1.9) and in neutron-capture elements as is characteristic of UFD stars, unambiguously confirming their association with Tucana II. Other chemical abundances (e.g., C, iron-peak) largely follow UFD trends and suggest that faint core-collapse supernovae (SNe) dominated the early evolution of Tucana II. We see a downturn in [$\alpha$/Fe] at [Fe/H] $\approx -2.8$, indicating the onset of Type Ia SN enrichment and somewhat extended chemical evolution. The most metal-rich star has strikingly low [Sc/Fe] = $-1.29 \pm 0.48$ and [Mn/Fe] = $-1.33 \pm 0.33$, implying significant enrichment by a sub-Chandrasekhar mass Type Ia SN. We do not detect a radial velocity gradient in Tucana II ($\text{d}v_{\text{helio}}/\text{d}\theta_1=-2.6^{+3.0}_{-2.9}$ km s$^{-1}$ kpc$^{-1}$) reflecting a lack of evidence for tidal disruption, and derive a dynamical mass of $M_{1/2} (r_h) = 1.6^{+1.1}_{-0.7}\times 10^6$ M$_{\odot}$. We revisit formation scenarios of the extended component of Tucana II in light of its stellar chemical abundances. We find no evidence that Tucana II had abnormally energetic SNe, suggesting that if SNe drove in-situ stellar halo formation then other UFDs should show similar such features. Although not a unique explanation, the decline in [$\alpha$/Fe] is consistent with an early galactic merger triggering later star formation. Using spectra obtained with the VLT/FORS2 and Gemini-S/GMOS instruments we have investigated carbon, nitrogen and sodium abundances in a sample of red giants in the Small Magellanic Cloud cluster Kron 3. The metallicity and luminosity of this cluster are comparable to those of Galactic globular clusters although with a notably younger age of $\sim$ 6.5 Gyr. Specifically we have investigated the strengths of the CH ($\lambda$ 4300 A) and CN ($\lambda$ 3800, $\lambda$ 4215) molecular bands finding a bimodality of CN band-strengths and a CH/CN anti-correlation. Application of spectrum synthesis techniques reveals a large spread ($\sim$1.2 dex) in nitrogen abundance and a spread in [C/Fe] of $\sim$0.3 dex after applying corrections for evolutionary mixing. We have also estimated sodium abundances from the strengths of the Na D lines finding a range of $\sim$0.8 dex in [Na/Fe] that correlates positively with the N abundances. This is the first star-by-star spectroscopic demonstration of correlated Na, N abundance variations in an intermediate-age star cluster, adding to existing photometric and spectroscopic indications of the presence of multiple populations in such clusters with masses in excess of $\sim 10^5$ solar masses. Our results confirm that the mechanism(s) responsible for the multiple populations observed in globular clusters cannot be an early cosmological effect applying only in old clusters, and provide a key additional factor in the quest to understand the origin of the abundance anomalies., Comment: 20 pages, 21 figures, 7 tables

We present chemical abundances for 21 elements (from Li to Eu) in 150 metal-poor Galactic stars spanning $-$4.1 $<$ [Fe/H] $<$ $-$2.1. The targets were selected from the SkyMapper survey and include 90 objects with [Fe/H] $\le$ $-$3 of which some 15 have [Fe/H] $\le$ $-$3.5. When combining the sample with our previous studies, we find that the metallicity distribution function has a power-law slope of $\Delta$(log N)/$\Delta$[Fe/H] = 1.51 $\pm$ 0.01 dex per dex over the range $-$4 $\le$ [Fe/H] $\le$ $-$3. With only seven carbon-enhanced metal-poor stars in the sample, we again find that the selection of metal-poor stars based on SkyMapper filters is biased against highly carbon rich stars for [Fe/H] $>$ $-$3.5. Of the 20 objects for which we could measure nitrogen, 11 are nitrogen-enhanced metal-poor stars. Within our sample, the high NEMP fraction (55\% $\pm$ 21\%) is compatible with the upper range of predicted values (between 12\% and 35\%). The chemical abundance ratios [X/Fe] versus [Fe/H] exhibit similar trends to previous studies of metal-poor stars and Galactic chemical evolution models. We report the discovery of nine new r-I stars, four new r-II stars, one of which is the most metal-poor known, nine low-$\alpha$ stars with [$\alpha$/Fe] $\le$ 0.15 as well as one unusual star with [Zn/Fe] = +1.4 and [Sr/Fe] = +1.2 but with normal [Ba/Fe]. The Milky Way is surrounded by dozens of ultra-faint (< $10^5$ solar luminosities) dwarf satellite galaxies. They are the surviving remnants of the earliest galaxies, as confirmed by their ancient (~13 billion years old) and chemically primitive stars. Simulations suggest that these systems formed within extended dark matter halos and experienced early galaxy mergers and supernova feedback. However, the signatures of these events would lie outside their core regions (>2 half-light radii), which are spectroscopically unstudied due to the sparseness of their distant stars. Here we identify members of the Tucana II ultra-faint dwarf galaxy in its outer region (up to 9 half-light radii), demonstrating the system to be dramatically more spatially extended and chemically primitive than previously found. These distant stars are extremely metal-poor (<[Fe/H]>=-3.02; less than ~1/1000th of the solar iron abundance), affirming Tucana II as the most metal-poor known galaxy. We observationally establish, for the first time, an extended dark matter halo surrounding an ultra-faint dwarf galaxy out to one kiloparsec, with a total mass of >$10^7$ solar masses. This measurement is consistent with the expected ~2x$10^7$ solar masses using a generalized NFW density profile. The extended nature of Tucana II suggests that it may have undergone strong bursty feedback or been the product of an early galactic merger. We analyze the dynamical properties of $\sim$1500 very metal-poor (VMP; [Fe/H] $\lesssim -2.0$) halo stars, based primarily on medium-resolution spectroscopic data from the HK and Hamburg/ESO surveys. These data, collected over the past thirty years, are supplemented by a number of calibration stars and other small samples, along with astrometric information from $Gaia$ DR2. We apply a clustering algorithm to the 4-D energy-action space of the sample, and identify a set of 38 Dynamically Tagged Groups (DTGs), containing between 5 and 30 member stars. Many of these DTGs can be associated with previously known prominent substructures such as $Gaia$-Sausage/Enceladus (GSE), Sequoia, the Helmi Stream (HStr), and Thamnos. Others are associated with previously identified smaller dynamical groups of stars and streams. We identify 10 new DTGs as well, many of which have strongly retrograde orbits. We also investigate possible connections between our DTGs and $\sim$300 individual $r$-process-enhanced (RPE) stars from a recent literature compilation. We find that several of these objects have similar dynamical properties to GSE (5), the HStr (4), Sequoia (1), and Rg5 (1), indicating that their progenitors might have been important sources of RPE stars in the Galaxy. Additionally, a number of our newly identified DTGs are shown to be associated with at least two RPE stars each (DTG-2: 3, DTG-7: 2; DTG-27: 2). Taken as a whole, these results are consistent with ultra-faint and/or dwarf spheroidal galaxies as birth environments in which $r$-process nucleosynthesis took place, and then were disrupted by the Milky Way., Comment: Accepted for ApJ. In this work we combine spectroscopic information from the \textit{SkyMapper survey for Extremely Metal-Poor stars} and astrometry from Gaia DR2 to investigate the kinematics of a sample of 475 stars with a metallicity range of $ -6.5 \leq \rm [Fe/H] \leq -2.05$ dex. Exploiting the action map, we identify 16 and 40 stars dynamically consistent with the \textit{Gaia Sausage} and \textit{Gaia Sequoia} accretion events, respectively. The most metal-poor of these candidates have metallicities of $\rm [Fe/H]=-3.31$ and $\rm [Fe/H]=-3.74$, respectively, helping to define the low-metallicity tail of the progenitors involved in the accretion events. We also find, consistent with other studies, that $\sim$21\% of the sample have orbits that remain confined to within 3~kpc of the Galactic plane, i.e., |Z$_{max}$| $\leq$ 3~kpc. Of particular interest is a sub-sample ($\sim$11\% of the total) of low |Z$_{max}$| stars with low eccentricities and prograde motions. The lowest metallicity of these stars has [Fe/H] = --4.30 and the sub-sample is best interpreted as the very low-metallicity tail of the metal-weak thick disk population. The low |Z$_{max}$|, low eccentricity stars with retrograde orbits are likely accreted, while the low |Z$_{max}$|, high eccentricity pro- and retrograde stars are plausibly associated with the \textit{Gaia Sausage} system. We find that a small fraction of our sample ($\sim$4\% of the total) is likely escaping from the Galaxy, and postulate that these stars have gained energy from gravitational interactions that occur when infalling dwarf galaxies are tidally disrupted., Comment: 23 pages, 15 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

The origin of multiple stellar populations in Globular Clusters (GCs) is one of the greatest mysteries of modern stellar astrophysics. N-body simulations suggest that the present-day dynamics of GC stars can constrain the events that occurred at high redshift and led to the formation of multiple populations. Here, we combine multi-band photometry from the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) and ground-based facilities with HST and Gaia Data Release 2 proper motions to investigate the spatial distributions and the motions in the plane of the sky of multiple populations in the type II GCs NGC 5139 ($\omega\,$Centauri) and NGC 6656 (M 22). We first analyzed stellar populations with different metallicities. Fe-poor and Fe-rich stars in M 22 share similar spatial distributions and rotation patterns and exhibit similar isotropic motions. Similarly, the two main populations with different iron abundance in $\omega\,$Centauri share similar ellipticities and rotation patterns. When analyzing different radial regions, we find that the rotation amplitude decreases from the center towards the external regions. Fe-poor and Fe-rich stars of $\omega\,$Centauri are radially anisotropic in the central region and show similar degrees of anisotropy. We also investigate the stellar populations with different light-element abundances and find that their N-rich stars exhibit higher ellipticity than N-poor stars. In $\omega\,$Centauri Centauri both stellar groups are radially anisotropic. Interestingly, N-rich, Fe-rich stars exhibit different rotation patterns than N-poor stars with similar metallicities. The stellar populations with different nitrogen of M 22 exhibit similar rotation patterns and isotropic motions. We present a study of the ultra-faint Milky Way dwarf satellite galaxy Tucana II using deep photometry from the 1.3m SkyMapper telescope at Siding Spring Observatory, Australia. The SkyMapper filter-set contains a metallicity-sensitive intermediate-band $v$ filter covering the prominent Ca II K feature at 3933.7A. When combined with photometry from the SkyMapper $u, g$, and $i$ filters, we demonstrate that $v$ band photometry can be used to obtain stellar metallicities with a precision of $\sim0.20$dex when [Fe/H] $> -2.5$, and $\sim0.34$dex when [Fe/H] $< -2.5$. Since the $u$ and $v$ filters bracket the Balmer Jump at 3646A, we also find that the filter-set can be used to derive surface gravities. We thus derive photometric metallicities and surface gravities for all stars down to a magnitude of $g\sim20$ within $\sim$75 arcminutes of Tucana II. Photometric metallicity and surface gravity cuts remove nearly all foreground contamination. By incorporating Gaia proper motions, we derive quantitative membership probabilities which recover all known members on the red giant branch of Tucana II. Additionally, we identify multiple likely new members in the center of the system and candidate members several half-light radii from the center of the system. Finally, we present a metallicity distribution function derived from the photometric metallicities of likely Tucana II members. This result demonstrates the utility of wide-field imaging with the SkyMapper filter-set in studying UFDs, and in general, low surface brightness populations of metal-poor stars. We present and discuss the results of a search for extremely metal-poor stars based on photometry from data release DR1.1 of the SkyMapper imaging survey of the southern sky. In particular, we outline our photometric selection procedures and describe the low-resolution ($R$ $\approx$ 3000) spectroscopic follow-up observations that are used to provide estimates of effective temperature, surface gravity and metallicity ([Fe/H]) for the candidates. The selection process is very efficient: of the 2618 candidates with low-resolution spectra that have photometric metallicity estimates less than or equal to -2.0, 41% have [Fe/H] $\leq$ -2.75 and only $\sim$7% have [Fe/H] $>$ -2.0 dex. The most metal-poor candidate in the sample has [Fe/H] $<$ -4.75 and is notably carbon-rich. Except at the lowest metallicities ([Fe/H] $<$ -4), the stars observed spectroscopically are dominated by a `carbon-normal' population with [C/Fe]$_{1D,LTE}$ $\leq$ +1 dex. Consideration of the A(C)$_{1D, LTE}$ versus [Fe/H]$_{1D, LTE}$ diagram suggests that the current selection process is strongly biased against stars with A(C)$_{1D, LTE}$ $>$ 7.3 (predominantly CEMP-$s$) while any bias against stars with A(C)$_{1D, LTE}$ $<$ 7.3 and [C/Fe]$_{LTE}$ $>$ +1 (predominantly CEMP-no) is not readily quantifiable given the uncertainty in the SkyMapper $v$-band DR1.1 photometry. We find that the metallicity distribution function of the observed sample has a power-law slope of $\Delta$(Log N)/$\Delta$[Fe/H] = 1.5 $\pm$ 0.1 dex per dex for -4.0 $\leq$ [Fe/H] $\leq$ -2.75, but appears to drop abruptly at [Fe/H] $\approx$ -4.2, in line with previous studies., Comment: 21 pages, 19 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

We explore the nature of carbon-rich ([C/Fe]_{1D,LTE} > +0.7), metal-poor ([Fe/H_{1D,LTE}] < -2.0) stars in the light of post 1D,LTE literature analyses, which provide 3D-1D and NLTE-LTE corrections for iron, and 3D-1D corrections for carbon (from the CH G-band, the only indicator at lowest [Fe/H]). High-excitation C~I lines are used to constrain 3D,NLTE corrections of G-band analyses. Corrections to the 1D,LTE compilations of Yoon et al. and Yong et al. yield 3D,LTE and 3D,NLTE Fe and C abundances. The number of CEMP-no stars in the Yoon et al. compilation (plus eight others) decreases from 130 (1D,LTE) to 68 (3D,LTE) and 35 (3D,NLTE). For stars with -4.5 < [Fe/H] < -3.0 in the compilation of Yong et al., the corresponding CEMP-no fractions change from 0.30 to 0.15 and 0.12, respectively. We present a toy model of the coalescence of pre-stellar clouds of the two populations that followed chemical enrichment by the first zero-heavy-element stars: the C-rich, hyper-metal-poor and the C-normal, very-metal-poor populations. The model provides a reasonable first-order explanation of the distribution of the 1D,LTE abundances of CEMP-no stars in the A(C) and [C/Fe] vs. [Fe/H] planes, in the range -4.0 < [Fe/H] < -2.0. The Yoon et al. CEMP Group I contains a subset of 19 CEMP-no stars (14% of the group), 4/9 of which are binary, and which have large [Sr/Ba]_{1D,LTE} values. The data support the conjectures of Hansen et al. (2016b, 2019) and Arentsen et al. (2018) that these stars may have experienced enrichment from AGB stars and/or "spinstars"., Comment: ApJ in press

We report the discovery of SMSS J160540.18-144323.1, a new ultra-metal poor halo star discovered with the SkyMapper telescope. We measure [Fe/H] = -6.2 +- 0.2 (1D LTE), the lowest ever detected abundance of iron in a star. The star is strongly carbon-enhanced, [C/Fe] = 3.9 +- 0.2, while other abundances are compatible with an alpha-enhanced solar-like pattern with [Ca/Fe] = 0.4 +- 0.2, [Mg/Fe] = 0.6 +- 0.2, [Ti/Fe] = 0.8 +- 0.2, and no significant s- or r-process enrichment, [Sr/Fe] < 0.2 and [Ba/Fe] < 1.0 (3{\sigma} limits). Population III stars exploding as fallback supernovae may explain both the strong carbon enhancement and the apparent lack of enhancement of odd-Z and neutron-capture element abundances. Grids of supernova models computed for metal-free progenitor stars yield good matches for stars of about 10 solar mass imparting a low kinetic energy on the supernova ejecta, while models for stars more massive than roughly 20 solar mass are incompatible with the observed abundance pattern., Comment: 5 pages, 2 figures, submitted to MNRAS

We present results from the analysis of high-resolution spectra obtained with the Keck HIRES spectrograph for a sample of 17 candidate extremely metal-poor (EMP) stars originally selected from commissioning data obtained with the SkyMapper telescope. Fourteen of the stars have not been observed previously at high dispersion. Three have [Fe/H]<=-3.0 while the remainder, with two more metal-rich exceptions, have -3.0<=[Fe/H]<=-2.0 dex. Apart from Fe, we also derive abundances for the elements C, N, Na, Mg, Al, Si, Ca, Sc, Ti, Cr, Mn, Co, Ni, and Zn, and for n-capture elements Sr, Ba, and Eu. None of the current sample of stars is found to be carbon-rich. In general our chemical abundances follow previous trends found in the literature, although we note that two of the most metal-poor stars show very low [Ba/Fe] (~-1.7) coupled with low [Sr/Ba] (~-0.3). Such stars are relatively rare in the Galactic halo. One further star, and possibly two others, meet the criteria for classification as a r-I star. This study, together with that of Jacobson et al. The origin of the star-to-star abundance variations found for the light elements in Galactic globular clusters (GGCs) is not well understood, which is a significant problem for stellar astrophysics. While the light element abundance variations are very common in globular clusters, they are comparatively rare in the Galactic halo field population. However, little is known regarding the occurrence of the abundance anomalies in other environments such as that of dwarf spheroidal (dSph) galaxies. Consequently, we have investigated the anti-correlation and bimodality of CH and CN band strengths, which are markers of the abundance variations in GGCs, in the spectra of red giants in the Sculptor dwarf spheroidal galaxy. Using spectra at the Na~D lines, informed by similar spectra for five GGCs (NGC 288, 1851, 6752, 6809 and 7099), we have also searched for any correlation between CN and Na in the Sculptor red giant sample. Our results indicate that variations analogous to those seen in GGCs are not present in our Sculptor sample. Instead, we find a weak positive correlation between CH and CN, and no correlation between Na and CN. We also reveal a deficiency in [Na/Fe] for the Sculptor stars relative to the values in GGCs, a result which is consistent with previous work for dSph galaxies. We present chemical abundance measurements for seven stars with metallicities ranging from [Fe/H] = $-$3.3 to [Fe/H] = $-$2.4 in the Tucana II ultra-faint dwarf galaxy (UFD), based on high-resolution spectra obtained with the MIKE spectrograph on the 6.5 m Magellan-Clay Telescope. For three stars, we present detailed chemical abundances for the first time. Of those, two stars are newly discovered members of Tucana II and were selected as probable members from deep narrow band photometry of the Tucana II UFD taken with the SkyMapper telescope. This result demonstrates the potential for photometrically identifying members of dwarf galaxy systems based on chemical composition. One new star was selected from the membership catalog of Walker et al. (2016). The other four stars in our sample have been re-analyzed, following additional observations. Overall, six stars have chemical abundances that are characteristic of the UFD stellar population. The seventh star shows chemical abundances that are discrepant from the other Tucana II members and an atypical, higher strontium abundance than what is expected for typical UFD stars. While unlikely, its strontium abundance raises the possibility that it may be a foreground metal-poor halo star with the same systemic velocity as Tucana II. If we were to exclude this star, Tucana II would satisfy the criteria to be a surviving first galaxy. We investigate the color-magnitude diagram (CMD) of the Carina dwarf spheroidal galaxy using data of Stetson et al. (2011) and synthetic CMDs based on isochrones of Dotter et al. (2008), in terms of the parameters [Fe/H], age, and [alpha/Fe], for the cases when (i) [alpha/Fe] is held constant and (ii) [alpha/Fe] is varied. The data are well described by four basic epochs of star formation, having [Fe/H] = -1.85, -1.5, -1.2, and ~-1.15 and ages ~13, 7, ~3.5, and ~1.5 Gyr, respectively (for [alpha/Fe] = 0.1 (constant [alpha/Fe]) and [alpha/Fe] = 0.2, 0.1, -0.2, -0.2 (variable [alpha/Fe])), with small spreads in [Fe/H] and age of order 0.1 dex and 1 - 3 Gyr. Within an elliptical radius 13.1 arcmin, the mass fractions of the populations, at their times of formation, were (in decreasing age order) 0.34, 0.39, 0.23, and 0.04. This formalism reproduces five observed CMD features (two distinct subgiant branches of old and intermediate-age populations, two younger, main-sequence components, and the small color dispersion on the red giant branch (RGB)). The parameters of the youngest population are less certain than those of the others, and given it is less centrally concentrated it may not be directly related to them. High-resolution spectroscopically analyzed RGB samples appear statistically incomplete compared with those selected using radial velocity, which contain bluer stars comprising ~5 - 10% of the samples. We conjecture these objects may, at least in part, be members of the youngest population. Chemical abundances are presented for 19 elements in a sample of 63 red giants in the Carina dwarf spheroidal galaxy (dSph), based on homogeneous 1D/LTE model atmosphere analyses of our own observations (32 stars) and data available in the literature (a further 31 independent stars). The (Fe) metallicity and [$\alpha$/Fe] distribution functions have mean values and dispersions of -1.59 and 0.33 dex ([Fe/H] range: -2.68 to -0.64), and 0.07 and 0.13 dex ([$\alpha$/Fe] range: -0.27 to 0.25), respectively. We confirm the finding of Venn et al. (2012) that a small percentage (some 10% in the present investigation) of the sample show clear evidence for significant enrichment by Type Ia supernovae ejecta. Calcium, with the most accurately determined abundance of the alpha-elements, shows an asymmetric distribution towards smaller values of [Ca/Fe] at all [Fe/H], most significantly over -2.0 < [Fe/H] < -1.0, suggestive of incomplete mixing of the ejecta of Type Ia SNe with the ambient medium of each of Carina's generations. Approximate color-magnitude-diagram age estimates are presented for the sample and, together with our chemical abundances, compared with the results of our previous synthetic CMD analysis, which reported the details of Carina's four well-defined populations. We searched for the Na-O anti-correlation universally reported in the Galaxy's globular clusters, and confirm that this phenomenon does not exist in Carina. We also found that one of the 32 stars in our sample has an extremely enhanced lithium abundance -- A(Li)$_{\text{NLTE}}$ = +3.36, consistent with membership of the ~1% group of Li-rich stars in dSph described by Kirby et al., Comment: Accepted by ApJS

We present a chemical abundance analysis of a metal-poor star, ROA 276, in the stellar system omega Centauri. We confirm that this star has an unusually high [Sr/Ba] abundance ratio. Additionally, ROA 276 exhibits remarkably high abundance ratios, [X/Fe], for all elements from Cu to Mo along with normal abundance ratios for the elements from Ba to Pb. The chemical abundance pattern of ROA 276, relative to a primordial omega Cen star ROA 46, is best fit by a fast-rotating low-metallicity massive stellar model of 20 Msun, [Fe/H] = -1.8, and an initial rotation 0.4 times the critical value; no other nucleosynthetic source can match the neutron-capture element distribution. ROA 276 arguably offers the most definitive proof to date that fast-rotating massive stars contributed to the production of heavy elements in the early Universe., Comment: ApJ in press

We obtain estimates of stellar atmospheric parameters for a previously published sample of 1777 relatively bright (9 < B < 14) metal-poor candidates from the Hamburg/ESO Survey. The original Frebel et al. analysis of these stars was only able to derive estimates of [Fe/H] and [C/Fe] for a subset of the sample, due to limitations in the methodology then available. A new spectroscopic analysis pipeline has been used to obtain estimates of Teff, log g, [Fe/H], and [C/Fe] for almost the entire dataset. This sample is very local - about 90% of the stars are located within 0.5 kpc of the Sun. We consider the chemodynamical properties of these stars in concert with a similarly local sample of stars from a recent analysis of the Bidelman & MacConnell 'weak-metal' candidates by Beers et al. We use this combined sample to identify possible members of the suggested halo stream of stars by Helmi et al. and Chiba & Beers, as well as stars that may be associated with stripped debris from the putative parent dwarf of the globular cluster Omega Centauri, suggested to exist by previous authors. We identify a clear increase in the cumulative frequency of carbon-enhanced metal-poor (CEMP) stars with declining metallicity, as well as an increase in the fraction of CEMP stars with distance from the Galactic plane, consistent with previous results. Recent studies of the Milky Way and its satellites have paid special attention to the importance of carbon-enhanced metal-poor (CEMP) stars due to their involvement in Galactic formation history and their possible connection with the chemical elements originating in the first stellar generation. In an ongoing study of red giants in the Sculptor dwarf galaxy we have discovered a star with extremely strong CN and CH molecular bands. This star, Scl-1013644, has previously been identified by Geisler et al. (2005) as a star with an enrichment in the heavy elements. Spectrum synthesis has been used to derive the carbon, nitrogen and barium abundances for Scl-1013644. Our findings are [C/Fe] = +0.8, [N/Fe] = -0.3 and [Ba/Fe] = +2.1 with the latter result consistent with the value found by Geisler et al. (2005). These results reveal Scl-1013644 as a CEMP-s star, the third such star discovered in this dwarf galaxy., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures, 3 tables

We present chemical abundance measurements of two metal-poor red giant stars in the ultra-faint dwarf galaxy Bootes I, based on Magellan/MIKE high-resolution spectra. For Boo I-980, with [Fe/H]=-3.1, we present the first elemental abundance measurements while Boo I-127, with [Fe/H]=-2.0, shows abundances in good agreement with previous measurements. Light and iron-peak element abundance ratios in the two Bootes I stars, as well as those of most other Boootes I members, collected from the literature, closely resemble those of regular metal-poor halo stars. Neutron-capture element abundances Sr and Ba are systematically lower than the main halo trend, and also show a significant abundance spread. Overall, this is similar to what has been found for other ultra-faint dwarf galaxies. We apply corrections to the carbon abundances (commensurate with stellar evolutionary status) of the entire sample and find 21% of stars to be carbon-enhanced metal-poor (CEMP) stars, compared to 13% without using the carbon correction. We reassess the metallicity distribution functions (MDF) for the CEMP stars and non-CEMP stars, and confirm earlier claims that CEMP stars might belong to a different, earlier population. Applying a set of abundance criteria to test to what extent Bootes I could be a surviving first galaxy suggests that it is one of the earliest assembled systems that perhaps received gas from accretion from other clouds in the system, or from swallowing a first galaxy or building block type object. We present metallicities for red giant stars in the globular cluster NGC 6273 based on intermediate resolution GMOS-S spectra of the calcium triplet region. For the 42 radial velocity members with reliable calcium triplet line strength measurements, we obtain metallicities, [Fe/H], using calibrations established from standard globular clusters. We confirm the presence of an intrinsic abundance dispersion identified by Johnson et al. (2015). The total range in [Fe/H] is ~1.0 dex and after taking into account the measurement errors, the intrinsic abundance dispersion is \sigma[Fe/H] = 0.17 dex. Among the Galactic globular clusters, the abundance dispersion in NGC 6273 is only exceeded by omega Cen, which is regarded as the remnant of a disrupted dwarf galaxy, and M 54, which is the nuclear star cluster of the Sagittarius dwarf galaxy. If these three globular clusters share the same formation mechanism, then NGC 6273 may also be the remnant nucleus of a disrupted dwarf galaxy., Comment: MNRAS in press

We present a high-resolution elemental-abundance analysis for a sample of 23 very metal-poor (VMP; [Fe/H] < -2.0) stars, 12 of which are extremely metal-poor (EMP; [Fe/H] < -3.0), and 4 of which are ultra metal-poor (UMP; [Fe/H] < -4.0). These stars were targeted to explore differences in the abundance ratios for elements that constrain the possible astrophysical sites of element production, including Li, C, N, O, the alpha-elements, the iron-peak elements, and a number of neutron-capture elements. This sample substantially increases the number of known carbon-enhanced metal-poor (CEMP) and nitrogen-enhanced metal-poor (NEMP) stars -- our program stars include eight that are considered "normal" metal-poor stars, six CEMP-no stars, five CEMP-s stars, two CEMP-r stars, and two CEMP-r/s stars. One of the CEMP-$r$ stars and one of the CEMP-r/s stars are possible NEMP stars. We detect lithium for three of the six CEMP-no stars, all of which are Li-depleted with respect to the Spite plateau. The majority of the CEMP stars have [C/N] > 0. The stars with [C/N] < 0 suggest a larger degree of mixing; the few CEMP-no stars that exhibit this signature are only found at [Fe/H] < -3.4, a metallicity below which we also find the CEMP-no stars with large enhancements in Na, Mg, and Al. We confirm the existence of two plateaus in the absolute carbon abundances of CEMP stars, as suggested by Spite et al. The SkyMapper Southern Sky Survey is carrying out a search for the most metal-poor stars in the Galaxy. It identifies candidates by way of its unique filter set that allows for estimation of stellar atmospheric parameters. The set includes a narrow filter centered on the Ca II K 3933A line, enabling a robust estimate of stellar metallicity. Promising candidates are then confirmed with spectroscopy. We present the analysis of Magellan-MIKE high-resolution spectroscopy of 122 metal-poor stars found by SkyMapper in the first two years of commissioning observations. 41 stars have [Fe/H] <= -3.0. Nine have [Fe/H] <= -3.5, with three at [Fe/H] ~ -4. A 1D LTE abundance analysis of the elements Li, C, Na, Mg, Al, Si, Ca, Sc, Ti, Cr, Mn, Co, Ni, Zn, Sr, Ba and Eu shows these stars have [X/Fe] ratios typical of other halo stars. One star with low [X/Fe] values appears to be "Fe-enhanced," while another star has an extremely large [Sr/Ba] ratio: >2. Only one other star is known to have a comparable value. Seven stars are "CEMP-no" stars ([C/Fe] > 0.7, [Ba/Fe] < 0). 21 stars exhibit mild r-process element enhancements (0.3 <=[Eu/Fe] < 1.0), while four stars have [Eu/Fe] >= 1.0. These results demonstrate the ability to identify extremely metal-poor stars from SkyMapper photometry, pointing to increased sample sizes and a better characterization of the metal-poor tail of the halo metallicity distribution function in the future., Comment: Minor corrections to text, missing data added to Tables 3 and 4; updated to match published version. We present a high resolution spectroscopic analysis of 62 red giants in the Milky Way globular cluster NGC5286. We have determined abundances of representative light proton-capture, alpha, Fe-peak and neutron-capture element groups, and combined them with photometry of multiple sequences observed along the colour-magnitude diagram. Our principal results are: (i) a broad, bimodal distribution in s-process element abundance ratios, with two main groups, the s-poor and s-rich groups; (ii) substantial star-to-star Fe variations, with the s-rich stars having higher Fe, e.g. <[Fe/H]>_s-rich - <[Fe/H]>_s-poor ~ 0.2~dex; and (iii) the presence of O-Na-Al (anti-)correlations in both stellar groups. We have defined a new photometric index, c_{BVI}=(B-V)-(V-I), to maximise the separation in the colour-magnitude diagram between the two stellar groups with different Fe and s-element content, and this index is not significantly affected by variations in light elements (such as the O-Na anticorrelation). The variations in the overall metallicity present in NGC5286 add this object to the class of "anomalous" GCs. Furthermore, the chemical abundance pattern of NGC5286 resembles that observed in some of the anomalous GCs, e.g. M22, NGC1851, M2, and the more extreme Omega Centauri, that also show internal variations in s-elements, and in light elements within stars with different Fe and s-elements content. In view of the common variations in s-elements, we propose the term s-Fe-anomalous GCs to describe this sub-class of objects. The similarities in chemical abundance ratios between these objects strongly suggest similar formation and evolution histories, possibly associated with an origin in tidally disrupted dwarf satellites., Comment: 28 pages, 21 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

The oldest, most metal-poor stars in the Galactic halo and satellite dwarf galaxies present an opportunity to explore the chemical and physical conditions of the earliest star forming environments in the Universe. We review the fields of stellar archaeology and dwarf galaxy archaeology by examining the chemical abundance measurements of various elements in extremely metal-poor stars. Focus on the carbon-rich and carbon-normal halo star populations illustrates how these provide insight into the Population III star progenitors responsible for the first metal enrichment events. We extend the discussion to near-field cosmology, which is concerned with the formation of the first stars and galaxies and how metal-poor stars can be used to constrain these processes. Complementary abundance measurements in high-redshift gas clouds further help to establish the early chemical evolution of the Universe.
