Abstract

Monitoring the dissolution of polyolefins using online spectroscopy analysis is addressed in this work, with the aim of optimizing plastic recycling processes. Two in situspectroscopic methods are used to predict the dissolved polymer content: Raman spectroscopy and attenuated total reflectance infrared spectroscopy. Commercially available polypropylenes are considered. Different solvents are selected based on their affinity with polypropylene. Partial least squares regression is employed to identify models predicting the polymer concentration for each solvent from the online spectra. Raman spectroscopy was found to give a better prediction. It was therefore used to study different parameters influencing the dissolution process, such as solvent type, temperature and polymer form.

Abstract

International audience; An imidazolium catalyst supported on thermomorphic polyethylene (PE) was prepared from 1methylimidazole and polyethylene iodide (PE-I). The catalyst was characterized by 1 H and 13 C NMR, SEC and MALDI-ToF mass spectrometry. Its catalytic activity was evaluated in the ring-opening of epoxides with carbon dioxide to give cyclic carbonates under solvent-free conditions. The catalyst proved to be active at low catalyst loading (down to 0.1 mol%) and allows the reaction to occur at low CO2 pressure (1-5 bar) and moderate temperature (100°C). A range of terminal and internal epoxides was converted to the corresponding cyclic carbonates with high yields and selectivities. The recyclability of the catalyst was studied and no significant loss of activity was observed after 5 runs.

Abstract

A range of thermomorphic polyethylene‐supported organocatalysts is prepared from N‐alkyl imidazoles and polyethylene iodide (PEI) with good yields (85–92%) and high funtionality (98–99%). The catalytic activity of these species is studied for the ring opening of epoxidized methyl oleate with CO2 to give the corresponding cyclic carbonate. The reaction is carried out at 100 °C to fully exploit the thermomorphic behavior of the organocatalysts. The optimized conditions (neat, 100 °C, and 20 bar of CO2) are applied to a range of epoxidized fatty acids, including an epoxidized rapeseed oil, to give the corresponding carbonates with good yields (75–96%). The catalyst recycling is also studied, and no significant loss of activity is observed after ten runs. The fatty carbonates are important intermediates for the preparation of non‐isocyanate polyurethanes (NIPUs). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Ziegler-Natta precatalysts were synthetized from Lewis-base-modified-MgCl2 supports and treated by various Lewis acids, prior to activation by triethylaluminum, in order to increase their activity in ethylene polymerization. BCl3 provided the highest increase in activity. Interestingly, polymerization results showed no substantial modification of polymer properties, which is consistent with that Lewis acid only promotes the creation of new active sites, after activation by TEA, possessing very similar features to the original ones achievable with conventional precatalysts (i.e. without Lewis-acid treatment). Abstract

The MCM-41 supported hydrides [([triple bond]SiO)(2)TaH(3)], 1a, and [([triple bond]SiO)(2)TaH(3)], 1b, cleave N-H bonds of ammonia at room temperature to yield the well-defined imido amido surface complexes [([triple bond]SiO)(2)Ta(NH)(NH(2))], 2, and 2xNH(3). Additionally, the surface silanes [[triple bond]Si-H] that exist in close proximity to 1a and 1b also react with ammonia at room temperature to give the surface silylamido [Si-NH(2)]. Such reaction is tantalum assisted: surface silanes were synthesized independently and in absence of tantalum by reaction of highly strained silica, SiO(2-1000), with SiH(4) and no reaction with ammonia was observed. Surface-supported complexes 2, 2xNH(3), and [[triple bond]Si-NH(2)] have been characterized by, inter alia, solid-state NMR, IR, and EXAFS and independent synthesis of [[triple bond]Si-NH(2)]. The NMR studies on the fully 15N-labeled samples have led to unambiguous discrimination between imido, amido, and amino resonances of 2*, 2*x(15)NH(3), and [[triple bond]Si-15NH(2)] through the combination of solid-state magic angle spinning (MAS), heteronuclear correlation (HETCOR), 2D proton double-quantum (DQ) single-quantum (SQ) correlation, and 2D proton triple-quantum (TQ) single-quantum (SQ) correlation spectra. The in situ IR monitoring of the reaction of 1a and 1b with regular NH(3) and 15NH(3), and after H/D exchange has yielded the determination of all the NH(x) vibration and deformation modes, with their respective H/D and 14N/15N isotopic shifts. EXAFS study yielded the bond distances in 2 of 1.79(2) Angstrom for Ta=N, 1.89(1) Angstrom for Ta-O, and 1.98(2) Angstrom for Ta-N.

Abstract

Di(1-(propyl)-2,2,5,5-tetramethyl-1-aza-2,5-disilacylopentane)magnesium was synthesized and used as chain transfer agent for the ethylene polymerization in the presence of a neodymocene precursor. The polymerization was shown to be governed by a catalyzed chain growth process (CCG) on magnesium, allowing the quantitative formation of ammonium or amine functionalized polyethylene (PE) chains. The structure of these chains was shown by 1H and 13C NMR analyses. MALDI-ToF mass spectrometry was successfully used to confirm the structure predicted by the CCG mechanism. The additional formation of telechelic PE chains carrying an ammonium and either a diethyldithiocarbamate or an iodo moiety as end groups was shown after a simple deactivation of the polymerization medium with disulfiram or molecular iodine, respectively. Abstract

Iodo functionalized polyethylene (PE-I), prepared by the addition of iodine after catalyzed poly­ethylene chain growth on magnesium, is demonstrated to be an efficient macroinitiator for thermally induced, controlled free radical polymerization using dimanganese decacarbonyl (Mn2(CO)10). The free radical polymerization of methyl methacrylate is initiated by thermal homolysis of (Mn2(CO)10) at 80 °C, forming reactive manganese pentacarbonyl radical species [•Mn(CO)5] capable of activating the C−I bond of PE-I. The metal catalyzed radical generation and degenerative iodine processes yielded polyethylene- b-poly(methyl methacrylate) (PE- b-PMMA) block copolymers with relatively low dispersities. The end group functionality of the block copolymer is confirmed by the successful thermal polymerization of styrene by using PE- b-PMMA as a macro­initiator in the described process. This work conclusively provides a new approach for combining polyethylene with vinyl polymers via manganese chemistry in a simple and efficient pathway of importance in synthetic polymer chemistry and other related applications.
