Abstract

All of the goals, objectives and programs outlined for North Carolina are interrelated. In each of them, special attention is given to such Federal priorities as service to low-income families; strengthening the Office of State Library administrative agency; serving the physically handicapped and blind; the institutionalized (especially correctional); promoting interlibrary cooperation and the Right-to-Read; service to the aging; adult education; environmental and drug abuse education; early childhood education; service to migrants; and, model cities area projects. Continuous planning will change some proposed programs from time to time and even alter objectives but the broad goals will probably remain until they are reached. 2. Helping Your Child to Read.

Abstract

This booklet provides suggestions for parents in helping their children to learn how to read. The first section provides 34 suggestions and activities for parents to use with preschool children, such as reciting nursery rhymes, reading aloud, respecting the child's mood, and playing listening games. The second section offers 25 suggestions and activities for the parent to use after his child begins school. These include field trips, good sleeping habits, praise of the child, and patience with the child. The third section provides 18 suggestions and activities for independent reading--usually reached at the third or fourth grade levels. These include orally reading to the child, giving him a choice of places from which he may borrow books, and encouraging the use of reference materials. A list of addresses from which free reading materials for children are available is also provided. (DI)

This collection of papers from North Carolina's state and regional Conferences on Library and Information Services, which were held over a 6-month period in 1990-1991, includes copies of: (1) the agenda of the state conference (Raleigh, February 6, 1991); (2) a list of the delegates to the national White House Conference on Library and Information Services; (3) a list of resolutions to be presented at the national conference; (4) a press release for the state conference; (5) a copy of "Tar Heel Libraries" containing information on the nine regional conferences and resolutions from eight of them; (6) reports and resolutions from the state and individual regional conferences; (7) keynote papers from individual conferences; (8) a flyer announcing the governor's conferences, a fact sheet on each of the three national conference themes--democracy, literacy, and productivity--and position papers from individual conferences; (9) a statement of the mission and purpose of North Carolina's libraries; (10) discussion papers for the national conference; (11) a fact sheet on the national conference; and (12) a copy of the North Carolina Governor's Executive Order authorizing the state and regional conferences. 4. School & Library Service to Children: Crisis in the Southeast.

Abstract

This report presents papers, transcripts of speeches and group discussions, and other documents from a June 1982 conference on school and library services to children in the southeastern United States. The major presentations include: (1) a keynote address by Sara W. Hodgkins entitled "Our Children, Our Future"; (2) the transcript of an audiovisual presentation entitled "Proud But Not Satisfied"; (3) papers on cooperative efforts between school and public libraries by Ginny McKee and Jeannine Eaton; (4) copies of standards for accreditation of school libraries and learning resource centers in Kentucky, Mississippi, and Virginia; (5) papers on school and public library budget and personnel considerations for the 1980's by Mary Somerville, Marilyn Miller, and Sarah Long; (6) a review by Ken Donelson of censorship efforts on the part of individuals, organized groups, and librarians, with a list of suggestions for dealing with censorship attempts; and (7) descriptions of exemplary programs of library service to children in the southeast, based on a list of seven criteria. 5. Books for Visually Impaired Young Children: An Annotated Bibliography.

Abstract

The bibliography contains information on approximately 400 books for visually impaired children from preschool age through fourth grade. It is explained that the references were compiled from a master list of 1,642 titles which were evaluated according to type style and size, spacing, contrast, and illustration. Entries are arranged alphabetically by author and usually contain information on title, publisher, and date as well as a brief annotation about the type, illustrations, and contrast. (CL)
