The longleaf pine (Pinus palustris) savanna ecosystem is an imperiled, fire‐dominated community that supports exceptionally high levels of species richness and endemism. Area of this community has declined by more than 95% due to unsustainable logging, fire suppression, and changes in land‐use practices. In recent decades, efforts to restore fire‐dominated communities like longleaf pine savanna have gained popularity, especially in light of benefits to charismatic species like the northern bobwhite (Colinus virginianus). Although reptiles are important members of this ecological community, far less information exists as to how this group responds to longleaf pine management, especially when game bird conservation is a primary management focus. Although bobwhite management in these systems is mostly synonymous with longleaf pine restoration, additional conservation practices aimed at game birds (promoting fallow fields, supplemental feeding, meso‐carnivore control, cross sectional mowing, etc.) might affect the extent to which squamates benefit from habitat management. To better understand how squamate reptiles may benefit from longleaf pine savanna managed for northern bobwhites, we surveyed for six‐lined racerunners (Aspidoscelis sexlineata) across a large, contiguous tract of longleaf pine with varied land cover characteristics, managed to maximize the conservation of northern bobwhites. Racerunner detection probability on transect surveys was low (p̂$$ \hat{p} $$ = 0.23); however, occupancy probability was relatively high (ᴪ̂ = 0.60) across the property and driven by percent open ground (positive; 25‐m scale), percent grass cover (negative; 25‐m scale), and percent wetland (negative; 100‐m scale). Our findings support those of past studies about six‐lined racerunners in longleaf pine savannas suggesting the species thrives in the context of a short fire rotation (e.g., 2–3 years), even when game bird management is a primary objective of conservation efforts. Racerunners may also specialize on microhabitats (e.g., upland areas with relatively high bare ground cover) that occur most frequently in recently burned portions of bobwhite management units. Survival of northern bobwhite (Colinus virginianus) chicks is an important parameter influencing population dynamics. We determined cause‐specific mortality and apparent daily survival of bobwhite chicks (n = 170) during 2018 and 2019 at Tall Timbers Research Station, Tallahassee, Florida, USA. We assigned cause‐specific mortality to 58 chicks and unknown fates to 45 chicks. Of those with assigned fates, avian predation comprised the majority (n = 21, 36%) followed by snakes (n = 17, 29%), mammals (n = 16, 28%), and research‐induced mortality (n = 4, 7%). Corn snakes (Pantherophis guttatus) were the primary snake species (13 of 17 snake predations) responsible for predation followed by northern cottonmouths (Agkistrodon piscivorus; n = 3) and 1 eastern diamondback rattlesnake (Crotalus adamanateus). We determined diel timing of mortalities during 2019. All corn snake predations during 2019 (n = 8) occurred during roosting (2100–0700 hrs), whereas the eastern diamondback mortality was a diurnal event; no cottonmouths depredated chicks during 2019. Nine of 11 mammalian events occurred during roosting. Two avian events occurred during 2019, both during daylight hours. Survival was best predicted by the model including the effects of chick age, hatch timing, year, and their interactions. Daily survival of chicks increased with age and reached an asymptote at approximately 70 days; late hatches (after 15 July) survived better than early hatches (βLateHatch×ChickAge = 0.059, 95% CI =−0.003–0.121) and survival for late hatches was marginally lower in 2019 (βLateHatch×ChickAge×Year19 = −0.058, 95% CI = −0.137–0.022). Management focused on increasing survival during the first 2 months of life and early nesting season may substantially benefit bobwhite population abundance. Background: Monitoring forage in livestock operations is critical to sustainable rangeland management of soil and ecological processes that provide both livestock and wildlife habitat. Traditional ground-based sampling methods have been widely used and provide valuable information; however, they are time-consuming, labor-intensive, and limited in their ability to capture larger extents of the spatial and temporal dynamics of rangeland ecosystems. Drones provide a solution to collect data to larger extents than field-based methods and with higher-resolution than traditional remote sensing platforms. Our objectives were to (1) assess the accuracy of vegetation cover height in grasses using drones, (2) quantify the spatial distribution of vegetation cover height in grazed and non-grazed pastures during the dormant (fall–winter) and growing seasons (spring–summer), and (3) evaluate the spatial distribution of vegetation cover height as a proxy for northern bobwhite (Colinus virginianus) habitat in South Texas. We achieved this by very fine scale drone-derived imagery and using class level landscape metrics to assess vegetation cover height configuration. Results: Estimated heights from drone imagery had a significant relationship with the field height measurements in September (r2 = 0.83; growing season) and February (r2 = 0.77; dormant season). Growing season pasture maintained residual landscape habitat configuration adequate for bobwhites throughout the fall and winter of 2022–2023 following grazing. Dormant season pasture had an increase in bare ground cover, and a shift from many large patches of tall herbaceous cover (40–120 cm) to few large patches of low herbaceous cover (5–30 cm) (p < 0.05). Conclusions: Drones provided high-resolution imagery that allowed us to assess the spatial and temporal changes of vertical herbaceous vegetation structure in a semi-arid rangeland subject to grazing. This study shows how drone imagery can be beneficial for wildlife conservation and management by providing insights into changes in fine-scale vegetation spatial and temporal heterogeneity from livestock grazing. Northern bobwhites (Colinus virginianus) have become a species of great conservation priority because of widespread and ongoing population declines. Long‐distance translocations are becoming increasingly used to access a source population with densities high enough to support translocation. Two key uncertainties exist regarding the efficacy of long‐distance translocations: choosing a source population with adaptations that will be successful in a novel environment and mitigating the stress response common during the translocation process. We translocated bobwhites from the South Texas Plains and the Floridian Coastal Plain to a recipient site in the Floridian Coastal Plain in 2021 and 2022 to compare the survival and productivity of bobwhites translocated from two different source populations. We also evaluated how varying holding times during the translocation process influenced the success of the translocated individuals. Breeding season survival, nest propensity and fecundity were greater for Florida resident and Florida translocated bobwhites relative to Texas translocated bobwhites. We observed high rates of mortality during the transport and holding processes, but holding time did not affect breeding season survival of Texas translocated bobwhites. Both nest success and fecundity of Texas translocated bobwhites were negatively affected by holding time. Bobwhites translocated long distances may have the adaptive capacity to be successful in novel environments, but the consequences of translocation stress can be detrimental. Future translocation planning should consider choosing source populations from similar ecoregions to simultaneously decrease translocation distances and potential stress from translocation. The environmental risk assessment (ERA) of plant protection products (PPPs) is commonly conducted for a number of standard laboratory species, though its scope includes all species, especially those that are vulnerable or endangered. This begs the question of how the eco-physiological and life history traits of those data-rich species compare to those of less documented species. This paper investigates the utility of a database of such traits, the Add-my-Pet collection of Dynamic Energy Budget theory, for the ERA of North American birds. We identified 72 bird species in the collection that have a federal listing status or are otherwise of interest for the ERA of PPPs and compared their eco-physiological and life history traits in relation to body size, feeding guild, and taxonomic identity to those of 446 terrestrial Holarctic birds, as well as those of standard lab species, notably the northern bobwhite, mallard, and zebra finch. The properties of standard lab species generally align with those of a similar taxonomy and size, with the notable exception of the relatively high reproductive capacity of the northern bobwhite and mallard due to the unique properties of laboratory study data. In addition, taxonomy appears to be a better predictor of eco-physiological traits than feeding guild. We conclude that, to identify representative species for the ERA of PPPs, more traits need to be included, such as those directly linked to the likelihood of exposure and those related to reproductive behavior. It has been demonstrated that helminths are capable of critically impacting the fitness of their hosts. This has typically been shown experimentally through the administration of anthelmintic drugs but are rarely performed on a landscape or host population scale. Here, the anthelmintic fenbendazole (FBZ) was mixed in a supplemental feed and provided to a free-ranging population of Northern bobwhite quail (Colinus virginianus). Abundances of Northern bobwhite and two nematode parasites commonly found infecting Northern bobwhite were monitored and compared to a neighboring untreated population. The Northern bobwhite population receiving the medicated feed grew substantially from 2019 to 2022, while the neighboring site had no change in abundance. The treated population was also substantially greater than the untreated population in 2021 and 2022. Additionally, the treated Northern bobwhite population had substantially lower abundances of the two nematodes. This research provides evidence of the ability of helminth populations to have a negative impact on Northern bobwhite populations and presents a method for reducing helminth abundance in those populations on a landscape scale.

Management of wildlife populations is most effective with a thorough understanding of the interplay among vital rates, population growth, and density-dependent feedback; however, measuring all relevant vital rates and assessing density-dependence can prove challenging. Integrated population models have been proposed as a method to address these issues, as they allow for direct modeling of density-dependent pathways and inference on parameters without direct data. We developed integrated population models from a 25-year demography dataset of Northern Bobwhites (Colinus virginianus) from southern Georgia, USA, to assess the demographic drivers of population growth rates and to estimate the strength of multiple density-dependent processes simultaneously. Furthermore, we utilize a novel approach combining breeding productivity and post-breeding abundance and age-and-sex ratio data to infer juvenile survival. Population abundance was relatively stable for the first 14 years of the study but began growing after 2012, showing that bobwhite populations may be stable or exhibit positive population growth in areas of intensive management. Variation in breeding and non-breeding survival drove changes in population growth in a few years; however, population growth rates were most affected by productivity across the entire study duration. A similar pattern was observed for density-dependence, with relatively stronger negative effects of density on productivity than on survival. Our novel modeling approach required an informative prior but was successful at updating the prior distribution for juvenile survival. Our results show that integrated population models provide an attractive and flexible method for directly modeling all relevant density-dependent processes and for combining breeding and post-breeding data to estimate juvenile survival in the absence of direct data.

Northern bobwhite quail (Colinus virginianus) are an economically significant gamebird that has experienced continued general decline in the Rolling Plains ecoregion of Texas. Habitat loss and changing environmental conditions have been cited as major contributors to this decline, with factors such as parasites being considered inconsequential. To better assess the impacts of parasite infections on bobwhite populations in the Rolling Plains, bobwhite abundance was monitored in response to anthelminthic treatment. With the prevalence of Oxyspirura petrowi and Aulonocephalus pennula infections in quail from Mitchell County, Texas confirmed by previous studies, the anthelminthic agent Fenbendazole was introduced as a means of parasite control in 2014–2015. Bobwhite abundance was determined through a series of call counts which provided an index of bobwhite populations and were conducted throughout the course of the study. In 2016, call counts revealed a significant increase of bobwhite in the area subject to Fenbendazole treatment, while untreated areas showed no changes in abundance. Fall populations of bobwhite in the treated zone approached 300% of those in untreated areas, these findings suggest that parasites may have a more significant impact on quail populations in the Rolling Plains than previously suspected. With the importance of bobwhite as a game bird in the Rolling Plains, the potential impacts of parasites must be taken into consideration as a factor contributing to bobwhite declines. Further research into the long-term effects these parasites have on quail populations in the ecoregion may aid landowners in developing affordable and effective conservation strategies.

Passive monitoring of wildlife has proven to be a highly effective tool in management and conservation. This work describes an end-to-end system for acoustic localization within the context of a specific use case. The system is described in terms of its constituent modules and the functionality of each module, as it relates to the use case of Northern bobwhite (Colinus virginianus) localization, is detailed. First, we address the field deployment of acoustic recorders in terms of optimal configuration, spacing, and number in a manner that is at once utilitarian and mathematically rigorous. Then, we propose novel methods used to automatically detect the calls from recordings, match the detected calls across recordings, and calculate the time difference of arrivals (TDOAs). Finally, a new hyperbolic localization approach is presented that uses the TDOAs to estimate the position of the calls. Each module is formulated within a theoretical framework, implemented numerically in an efficient manner, and shown to compare favorably against existing methods. Moreover, the performance of the complete system is evaluated using field recorded data and the impact of environmental factors such as field relief, vegetation features, and wind speed are illustrated and discussed. We assert and demonstrate that the factor with the most immediate and profound impact on advancing the state of the art in acoustic monitoring of wildlife is open access to high-volume, diverse field data that is accompanied by high-quality ground truth.

Rangelands in the southwestern United States represent a current stronghold for northern bobwhite (Colinus virginianus); however, bobwhite populations in rangelands exhibit extreme inter‐annual variability in abundance in relation to fluctuating weather patterns. Recent declining bobwhite population trends within this region have led to the supposition that landscape‐scale processes, such as habitat loss and fragmentation and predation from increased raptor abundance, may be acting in conjunction with weather to reduce bobwhite populations. Our objective was to determine the relative effects of these factors on bobwhite populations in the rangeland environments of Texas and Oklahoma, USA. We obtained publicly available datasets for bobwhite counts (Breeding Bird Survey, state‐agency roadside counts), weather (PRISM), land cover (National Land Cover Database), and raptors (Christmas Bird Counts) for 3 5‐year periods (1990–1994, 1999–2003, 2009–2013). Data were collected at route and landscape scales based on routes within the Rio Grande Plains region of Texas and the Central Mixed Grass Prairie region of Texas and Oklahoma. We used generalized linear mixed models with a backward selection approach to determine top models for each dataset based on scale and ecoregion. Covariate relationships with bobwhite abundance followed expected patterns, with positive relationships with habitat, precipitation, and minimum temperatures and negative relationships with maximum temperatures and raptor abundance. Weather variables were the factors most consistently selected within both regions, while minimum winter temperature was overall the top variable. These relationships occurred within a landscape still containing relatively vast amounts of unfragmented bobwhite habitat (>60% rangeland; >15 million ha). Management within these regions should be focused on retaining habitat at a broad scale, while managing for suitable cover at a local scale to help mitigate weather effects. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Simple Summary: There are growing concerns about wildlife and livestock interactions and the impacts of those interactions on the sustainability of livestock. One of those concerns is the spillover of wildlife pathogens, including helminths, into livestock. This concern will likely become realized as the demand for free-range animal products increases. One such helminth with spillover potential is the eyeworm Oxyspirura petrowi. This eyeworm is common in many wild birds, and particularly common in Northern bobwhite quail. Related helminths are already commonly found in poultry raised in free-range conditions in developing nations. The purpose of this research was to investigate the lethality of fenbendazole, a widely available drug for treating parasites, to these eyeworms. The lethality estimates were similar to estimates of lethality to other roundworm parasites. However, studies that have investigated concentrations in host blood following administration of the drug indicate that it does not stay in the system long enough to achieve elimination of the parasite after a single dose. This indicates that in order to effectively treat eyeworm, fenbendazole must be delivered in a repeated or continuous manner. Oxyspirura petrowi is a heteroxenous nematode that infects the harderian gland and other ocular tissues in birds. High-intensity infections often cause damage to the infected tissues. Due to the nature of the infection sites, treatment of O. petrowi in these hosts can be difficult. Fenbendazole (FBZ) is a common anthelmintic used to treat birds for helminth infections; however, little information exists as to the efficacy of the drug on O. petrowi infections. The present study aims to estimate lethal concentrations of FBZ to O. petrowi. Adult O. petrowi were maintained in vitro and exposed to doses of 5, 50, 100, and 200 µM concentrations of FBZ and included both negative and vehicle controls. Exposure lasted 7.5 days and lethality was determined for each treatment. Negative and vehicle controls did not differ, and both had 75% survival at the end of the treatment period. The percentage survivorship in ascending order of concentration, corrected for the controls, was 66.67%, 44.44%, 33.33%, and 0%. LC10, LC50, and LC90 estimates were 7.5 ± 0.26, 49.1 ± 1.69, and 163.2 ± 5.63 µM, respectively. In the context of known pharmacokinetics of FBZ in birds, a single oral dose of FBZ can achieve exposure levels that are lethal to O. petrowi, but the drug does not stay in the system long enough. Fusarium graminearum, the causal agent of Fusarium head blight (FHB), produces various mycotoxins that contaminate wheat grains and cause profound health problems in humans and animals. Deoxynivalenol (DON) is the most common trichothecene found in contaminated grains. Our previous study showed that Arabidopsis-expressing F. graminearum trichothecene 3-O-acetyltransferase (FgTRI101) converted DON to 3-acetyldeoxynivalenol (3-ADON) and excreted it outside of Arabidopsis cells. To determine ifwheat can convert and excrete 3-ADON and reduce FHB and DON contamination, FgTRI101 was cloned and introduced into wheat cv Bobwhite. Four independent transgenic lines containing FgTRI101 were identified. Gene expression studies showed that FgTRI101 was highly expressed in wheat leaf and spike tissues in the transgenic line FgTri101-1606. The seedlings of two FgTri101 transgenic wheat lines (FgTri101-1606 and 1651) grew significantly longer roots than the controls on media containing 5 µg/mL DON; however, the 3-ADON conversion and excretion was detected inconsistently in the seedlings of FgTri101-1606. Further analyses did not detect 3-ADON or other possible DONrelated products in FgTri101-1606 seedlings after adding deuterium-labeled DON into the growth media. FgTri101-transgenic wheat plants showed significantly enhanced FHB resistance and lower DON content after they were infected with F. graminearum, but 3-ADON was not detected. Our study suggests that it is promising to utilize FgTRI101, a gene that the fungus uses for self-protection, for managing FHB and mycotoxin in wheat production. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Humans have profoundly impacted the distribution of plant and animal species over thousands of years. The most direct example of these effects is human‐mediated movement of individuals, either through translocation of individuals within their range or through the introduction of species to new habitats. While human involvement may be suspected in species with obvious range disjunctions, it can be difficult to detect natural versus human‐mediated dispersal events for populations at the edge of a species' range, and this uncertainty muddles how we understand the evolutionary history of populations and broad biogeographical patterns. Studies combining genetic data with archaeological, linguistic and historical evidence have confirmed prehistoric examples of human‐mediated dispersal; however, it is unclear whether these methods can disentangle recent dispersal events, such as species translocated by European colonizers during the past 500 years. We use genomic DNA from historical museum specimens and historical records to evaluate three hypotheses regarding the timing and origin of Northern Bobwhites (Colinus virginianus) in Cuba, whose status as an endemic or introduced population has long been debated. We discovered that bobwhites from southern Mexico arrived in Cuba between the 12th and 16th centuries, followed by the subsequent introduction of bobwhites from the southeastern USA to Cuba between the 18th and 20th centuries. These dates suggest the introduction of bobwhites to Cuba was human‐mediated and concomitant with Spanish colonial shipping routes between Veracruz, Mexico and Havana, Cuba during this period. Abstract Obtaining rigorous baseline density estimates of species of conservation interest is key when assisting landowners to achieve management goals on private lands. Northern bobwhite (Colinus virginianus) populations are declining throughout their range and despite being the focus of numerous private land conservation initiatives, baseline density estimates in privately owned pine forests are lacking. We sought to address this knowledge gap across the Southeastern United States by sampling 105 privately owned pine stands throughout 2018 to 2020 using observer point count and autonomous recording unit (ARU) sampling data. Using Bayesian hierarchical models, we investigated the influence of stand management (brush management or applied fire) on bobwhite density, as well as four landscape‐scale environmental variables. These included percentage cover of forest, herbaceous, agricultural or burnt land area across six different spatial scales ranging from 500‐m to 10‐km around each pine stand. Baseline density on sites with no management was estimated to be 2.24 coveys per 100 ha (1.00–5.03, 95% BCI), with little impact of applying brush management, but a trend for a positive effect of fire management (0.19, −0.01 to 0.38 95% BCI). This impact of fire was seen at both the stand‐scale, correlated with an increase in acreage of applied prescribed burn management, and across the greater landscape area, correlated with cover of burnt area within a 2‐km buffer around each site. There were also strong positive influences of herbaceous vegetation and a strong negative influence of forest cover on bobwhite density. Practical implication: our sampling efforts fill an important information gap regarding densities throughout private lands in the Southeastern United States. Our study also highlights the necessity of landscape scale planning for Northern Bobwhite conservation initiatives because the efficacy of conservation practices (i.e. prescribed fire and brush management) could be altered by the landscape surrounding the treated forest stand.

Woody vegetation continues to encroach into grasslands in many regions of the world. It often leads to habitat loss for grassland birds. Habitat loss is one reason for the ongoing declines in abundance of many bird species that are grassland obligates. However, species that can tolerate and perhaps even prefer some amount of shrub and tree cover presumably would not be as negatively affected by woody encroachment. Using bird point-count data from the Oaks and Prairies Joint Venture, we examined the habitat associations of eight grassland-shrubland bird species in two ecoregions of central Texas USA. In particular, we focused on canopy cover, canopy height, and shrub species composition given that woody encroachment entails increases or other changes in these habitat characteristics. Further, as with many bird species, structural components of the vegetation often characterize habitat. We treated these habitat characteristics as predictor variables in logistic multiple regression models wherein the response variable was probability of species occurrence at 478 point-count locations. Overall, canopy cover was a better predictor of probability of species occurrence than was canopy height or canopy species composition. Thus, canopy cover was an important habitat characteristic for most of the species. Bewick’s Wren ( Thryomanes bewickii ) exhibited its greatest probability of occurrence of approximately 0.63 at 40–60% canopy cover, Painted Bunting ( Passerina ciris ) approximately 0.74 at 15–45% canopy cover, and Rufous-crowned Sparrow ( Aimophila ruficeps ) approximately 0.09 at 50% canopy cover. The probability of occurrence of Field Sparrow ( Spizella pusilla ) consistently increased with increasing percent canopy cover, reaching a maximum value of 0.58 at 74% canopy cover. These results suggest that a limited amount of woody encroachment may actually benefit some grassland-shrubland bird species.

Owing to the continuous growth of farming activities, pesticides, a class of toxic and harmful chemicals, are widely present in the environment and thus pose a potential risk to the ecosystem and human health via biomagnification. Therefore, it is significant to conduct a more comprehensive environmental risk assessment towards pesticides in the context of green sustainable chemistry. This study collected the ecotoxicity data of hundreds of pesticides to develop four easily understandable, transferable and reproducible 2D descriptor-based quantitative structure-toxicity relationship (QSTR) models for evaluating the acute toxicity towards Colinus virginianus, Oncorhynchus mykiss, Daphnia magna, and Rat, respectively. According to the strict OECD guidelines, four individual QSTR models were obtained with excellent goodness-of-fit, robustness and predictivity. Moreover, four acceptable interspecies quantitative structure toxicity–toxicity relationship (iQSTTR) models were also developed with good statistical parameters. Applicability domain (AD) analysis indicates that the developed models have a wide application range and reliable predictive ability. Mechanistic explanation reveals that the electronegativity, lipophilicity and molecular bulk can obviously enhance the toxicity of pesticides, whereas the hydrophilic and polar features are shown to reduce the toxicity. Importantly, we predicted the toxicity of many untested pesticides in the comprehensive database for the first time using the developed models and provided the priority ranking list for the toxicity of untested pesticides. In conclusion, the established QSTR and iQSTTR models can be used for the ecotoxicological risk assessment, toxicity data gap filling and regulatory decision of pesticides, as well as aiding the design of new "green" pesticide products. Northern bobwhite (Colinus virginianus) populations have declined across much of their range. In response to these declines, wildlife biologists and managers have increased survey efforts and tried to optimize detection and capitalize on technological advances to improve population estimates and cost‐effectiveness. Our objective was to determine how environmental conditions influence detection of the reproduction call, or whistle, of masked bobwhite (C. v. ridgwayi), an endangered subspecies of northern bobwhite, using autonomous recording units (ARUs). We estimated the call intensity of the masked bobwhite reproduction call as 112 ± 0.5 decibels (mean ± SE) at 10 cm. We then broadcasted 16,284 calls during 17 trials to compare manual and automated call detection in recordings collected with ARUs. We used these data to model detectability of a bobwhite reproduction call, for when the bird is present and available, as a function of distance and weather conditions using generalized linear mixed models with trial as a random effect. Regardless of detection type, one model structure was competitive and suggested detection probability was a function of distance, wind speed, and wind direction. Detectability decreased with increased distance and wind speed and was influenced by wind direction. We demonstrate the use of our results to predict the probability of detecting a reproduction call during ARU‐based monitoring efforts. Northern bobwhites have experienced population declines in Colorado and range wide. Estimating vital rates can provide clues to factors limiting population growth rate. Although recent estimates of breeding season survival in the northwest corner of the northern bobwhite range are available, there have been no recent studies on nonbreeding season survival. We used radio‐telemetry to estimate nonbreeding season (October–March) survival of northern bobwhites at two study sites in northeastern Colorado during winter 2019–2020 and 2020–2021. Based on our sample of 157 bobwhites, we found that survival was highly variable between years and was negatively affected by colder daily minimum temperatures and deeper snow depths. Seasonal (six‐month) survival during the first year was 0.219 (SE = 0.040) and during the second year was 0.006 (SE = 0.005). We found no evidence that sex, age or study site influenced survival, and very weak support for an effect of body mass. During our study, there were two extreme winter weather events, during which we found unusually high numbers of non‐predation mortality. Overall, northern bobwhite nonbreeding season survival in the northwest corner of their range appears to be generally similar to other regions, except during extreme winter weather events, which resulted in high mortality. We encourage managers to create or maintain vegetation characteristics that will provide shelter from winter weather while also providing abundant food in close proximity. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The development of fluorine‐free firefighting foams has been proposed as a way to reduce the adverse environmental consequences of foams containing per‐ and poly‐fluoroalkyl substances. While there are likely fewer environmental and ecological concerns with these new fluorine‐free foams in terms of persistence and bioaccumulation, it is prudent to evaluate the ecotoxicity of these fluorine‐free foam products given the absence of data. Oral chronic drinking water exposure studies on adult pairs of northern bobwhite quail (Colinus virginianus) were conducted with a short‐chain fluorinated and a fluorine‐free foam: Buckeye Platinum Plus C6 and National Foam Avio Green KHC, respectively, at three exposure concentrations (0.01%, 0.1%, and 0.25%). Adults were monitored for survival, growth, and reproductive output; and chicks were monitored for survival and growth. Growth parameters in adult quail were not affected by exposure to the Buckeye or Avio foam. However, liver lipid content was higher in adult males exposed to the Buckeye foam or the Avio foam at the highest exposure concentrations. Chicks were heavier and had higher growth rates after adult exposure to Avio at the highest exposure level (0.25%) and to Buckeye at the two lowest exposure levels but not at the highest exposure level. The two adverse reproductive effects observed from avian exposure to Buckeye were an increased percentage of cracked eggs and earlier arrested embryonic development. Similarly, chronic exposure to Avio also induced earlier arrested embryonic development. These results show that the fluorine‐free foams tested did cause toxicity to bobwhite quail, but whether they pose a risk at contaminated sites requires further laboratory and field study and additional exposure data. Interest in the effects of stressors on wildlife has grown substantially over the past few decades. As this interest has grown, so has the need for minimally invasive and reliable methods for estimating differences in the levels of stress hormones. An enzyme immunoassay using standardized methods was validated for detecting concentrations of corticosterone (cort) metabolites from northern bobwhite fecal samples. Two physiological challenges and one biological challenge were applied to 18 northern bobwhites (nine males and nine females), and the fecal cort metabolite concentrations were compared to baseline levels. The interactions of sex and treatment, treatment and time and sex and time were all significant. This study was conducted to determine how reducing the parasite burden in a definitive host may affect the prevalence in intermediate hosts. Here we used the eyeworm Oxyspirura petrowi and cecal worm Aulonocephalus pennula as model species. Northern bobwhite quail (Colinus virginianus) were provided an anthelmintic medicated feed in wild systems because of convincing evidence that these parasites were suppressing their populations. Eyeworm and cecal worm prevalence were measured in Orthopterans, which act as intermediate hosts, using polymerase chain reaction. Individuals were collected from a control site, a site treated for 2 yr, and a site treated for 5 yr. Orthopteran community composition was significantly different among the sites; however, an interaction between subfamily and site was not significant for the eyeworm. There was a significant reduction in eyeworm-infected Orthopterans on the 5-yr site compared with the other 2, suggesting that treatment of a definitive host may indeed affect the prevalence of eyeworms during other life-cycle stages. There was an interaction between the Orthopteran subfamily and the site for the cecal worm, so results were analyzed within each subfamily. A significant reduction in the prevalence of cecal worms was only found in the Cyrtacanthacridinae subfamily on the 5-yr site when compared with the other sites. However, the greatest prevalence in the Gomphocerinae and Oedipodinae subfamilies across all 3 sites was 4.1%. This indicates an unknown degree of cecal worm host specificity. Passive acoustic monitoring is a valuable ecological and conservation tool that allows researchers to collect data from vocal species across large geographic areas and temporal spans. Grassland bird populations, many of which are indicators of ecosystem health, have experienced precipitous declines over the past several decades. Acoustic monitoring of grassland bird populations provides opportunities to monitor declines and focus conservation practices, yet the ability to identify species efficiently and accurately from acoustic data is challenging. Therefore, development of automated classifiers such as convolutional neural networks (CNNs) are at the forefront of streamlining detection and identification of individual species. Here, we present a CNN classifier for 5 key grassland bird species across southcentral Oklahoma, a part of the southern Great Plains: northern bobwhite (Colinus virginianus), painted bunting (Passerina ciris), dickcissel (Spiza americana), eastern meadowlark (Sturnella magna), and Bell's vireo (Vireo bellii). We compiled a high‐quality training dataset consisting of 6,933 calls, built semiautonomously using template matching that can be expanded easily to any bird species of interest. Our trained multilabel CNN achieved a high level of classification accuracy (≥98%) for the 5 species using the library of test calls and field recordings played using a programmable game caller. The ability to conduct acoustic wildlife surveys across large spatial extents will allow for more efficient monitoring of wildlife to determine key population parameters and trends and effects of biotic and abiotic factors (e.g., vegetation, disturbance, weather) on these key species. The interest in quail farming has been increasing over the years due to the quail’s many productive and financial benefits over other poultry species. Quail farming is still in its infancy in Botswana. This study investigated the current status, challenges, and prospects of Japanese quail farming in Mogoditshane, Gabane, and Tlokweng districts, Botswana. A total of 64 quail farmers were interviewed using a structured questionnaire from June 2022 to April 2023. Data were collected on the respondents’ demographic characteristics (age, educational status, and sex), quail management aspects (feeding, housing, and health), ownership of quail, challenges in quail farming, and the use of quail products in the study area. Results showed that 67% of male respondents were involved in quail rearing. The youth (≤35 years) dominated the rearing of quails, followed by respondents aged 41-50 years (22%), 36-40 years (16%), and above 50 years (9%). In addition, 48% of the respondents reared ≤100 quails, followed by 39% and 13% who reared 101-500 and 500 quails, respectively. Furthermore, 81% of respondents reared quails in cages, 17% in conventional structures, and 2% in residential houses. Bobwhite, Jumbo, and Japanese quail were the three quail varieties reared in the study area. It was found that 55% of the respondents had less than one year of experience in quail farming. Moreover, 86% of the respondents used crushed maize or sorghum to feed quails, while 14% used commercial chicken diets. Finally, 92% of the respondents mentioned that quail eggs were used to treat various human diseases. Effective challenges in quail farming included external parasites (36%), diseases (30%), predation (13%), lack of commercial quail diets (12%), escaping (6%), and theft (3%). Northern bobwhites (Colinus virginianus) are declining across their range. Population recovery requires a better understanding of the influence of management strategies and land cover on specific demographic components of full annual cycle population dynamics. We used known‐fate daily survival models to relate adult breeding season survival and nest survival to land cover composition, woody cover, and management actions on 5 study sites in southwest Missouri, USA. We collected 3,516 observations of daily nest survival from 364 bobwhite nests for 7,509 exposure days and 34,386 observations of adult survival from 955 bobwhites for 85,225 exposure days during breeding seasons in 2014–2018. The most supported model for nest and adult breeding season survival included environmental covariates for percent native grass and agricultural cover, distance to shrub, and distance to tree. Both nest and adult breeding season survival were positively related to distance to trees. Nest survival was negatively related to percent agricultural crop cover. Areal nest and adult breeding season survival were greater on native grassland sites compared to conservation areas that maintained small units of strip crop and wooded cover. Management to sustain or expand native grass cover and reduce tree cover should benefit bobwhite nest survival and adult breeding season survival in the landscapes we studied. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

(2023) discovered that the Cuban Northern Bobwhite subspecies, Colinus virginianus cubanensis (Gould, 1850), is an ancient hybrid population formed due to historical hybridization potentially brought by waves of historical human migration. Helminths, in particular eyeworms (Oxyspirura petrowi) and cecal worms (Aulonocephalus pennula), may be a factor influencing northern bobwhite (Colinus virginianus) populations in Texas. Previous research has shown a discrepancy in helminth infections between the Rolling Plains and Rio Grande Plains of Texas, US, potentially caused by differences in intermediate host distribution and abundance. We explored an alternative hypothesis centered on plant diversity, given that many plants possess phytochemicals with anthelmintic properties. We predicted that plant diversity would be greater and bobwhite diet more diverse in the Rio Grande Plains than the Rolling Plains, which in turn would potentially expose bobwhites to more plants with anthelmintic properties and therefore result in lower parasite prevalence and intensity. We conducted a literature review of plant diversity, anthelmintic plants, and bobwhite diet in Texas to explore this hypothesis. We also quantified the relationship between helminth prevalence in bobwhites and latitude. We documented trends for higher plant species richness, greater number of anthelmintic plants, and more diverse bobwhite diet in the Rio Grande Plains compared to the Rolling Plains. In addition, we documented a trend for increasing helminth prevalence with latitude for eyeworms but not cecal worms. Determining resource selection rates across life stages of a species is important to enable a comprehensive management approach that focuses on bolstering populations. Moreover, tying these selection rates to specific life‐history needs (e.g., foraging, roosting, loafing) can provide information for management practices. We studied northern bobwhite (Colinus virginianus) chick resource selection on a private property in Brunswick County, North Carolina, USA, to better understand foraging and roosting habitat selection. We tested 2 hypotheses (resource selection is influenced by predator avoidance, resource selection is influenced by food availability) to understand what influences specific resource use. The site was managed intensively for bobwhites using prescribed fire, seasonal mowing and disking, meso‐mammal control, and supplemental feeding. We radio‐tagged 156 chicks between 11–15 days of age from 29 unique brood captures and collected location data of roost sites and daily movement tracks for individual chicks from 2018–2019. We modeled roosting and foraging habitat selection using mixed‐effects conditional logistic regression models under a Bayesian framework. Burned upland pine (Pinus spp.) stands were selected by chicks for foraging and roosting sites. Fallow fields, unburned uplands (1 yr post‐burn), and areas closer to supplemental feed were selected by chicks as foraging habitat. We observed a negative interaction between age and fallow field selection as roosting habitat and age and areas closer to supplemental feed as foraging habitat. Our study results shed light on how circadian habitat use can vary and illustrate that one specific land cover type may not provide ideal diurnal and nocturnal habitat for bobwhite chicks. The Northern Bobwhite (Colinus virginianus) is an economically important game bird within the Rolling Plains Ecoregion. Within this region, bobwhite is experiencing extreme cyclic population fluctuations which are resulting in a net decline in total population. It is suspected that within this region two helminth parasites, an eyeworm (Oxyspirura petrowi) and a cecal worm (Aulonocephalus pennula), are contributing to this phenomenon. However, this has been difficult to study as the primary mode of investigation would be the deployment of anthelmintic treatment. Unfortunately, no registered treatments for wild bobwhite currently exist. Thus, utilizing an anthelmintictreatment for wild bobwhite would require registration of that treatment with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). As bobwhite are game birds that are hunted, they are considered food‐producing animals to the FDA, and as such require the assessment for the withdrawal of the drug residues to be assessed for human food safety. In this study, we optimized and validated a bioanalytical method for the quantification of fenbendazole sulfone in bobwhite following the U.S. FDA Center for Veterinary Medicine Guidance for Industry #208 [VICH GL 49 (R)] for assessment of fenbendazole sulfone drug residue in Northern bobwhite liver. The official method for quantifying fenbendazole sulfone in domestic chicken (Gallus gallus) was adapted for use in bobwhite. The validated method quantitation range is 2.5–30 ng/mL for fenbendazole with an average recovery of 89.9% in bobwhite liver. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract Passive acoustic monitoring using Autonomous Recording Units (ARUs) is becoming a significant research tool for collecting large amounts of ecological data. Northern bobwhite Colinus virginianus is an economically important game bird whose declining populations are of conservation concern, so efforts to monitor bobwhite abundance using ARUs are being intensified. Yet, manual processing of ARU data is time consuming and often expensive, so developing automatic call detection methods is a key step in acoustic monitoring. We present here the first single species convolutional neural network (CNN) developed purely for automatic bobwhite covey call identification and classification. We demonstrate the value of meaningful data augmentation by including non‐target calls and background noise into our training dataset, as well as evaluating alternative CNN score thresholds and model extrapolation performance. We trained our CNN on 6,682 manually labeled covey calls across three groups of sites within the southeastern USA. Precision and AUC from both CNN classification and individual call detection was high (0.80–0.99), and our model showed strong extrapolation ability across site groups. However, extrapolation performance significantly decreased for sites that were more dissimilar to the training data set if our meaningful data augmentation process was omitted. Our CNN detected significantly more covey calls than manual labeling using Raven Pro software, and processing time was greatly reduced: a single one hour wav file can be now analyzed by the CNN in roughly eight seconds. We also demonstrate using a simple case study that extremely high variability in estimates of bobwhite site occupancy and detection are obtained depending on the method of acoustic data processing (manual versus CNN). Our results suggest that our CNN provides robust and time‐saving analysis of bobwhite covey call acoustic data and can be applied to future research and monitoring projects with high confidence in the performance of the model.

Sympatry is a common consequence of niche differentiation and can exist as broad sympatry (shared geographical region) or direct sympatry (i.e., syntopy [shared resource patch]). Syntopy may be highly dynamic, particularly in environments that experience stochastic events that increase variability in abiotic conditions and vegetation. We examined how estimates of syntopy varied across space and time in a rangeland system within the Southern Great Plains, USA over a three-year period (2013–2015). We modeled annual estimates of syntopy between three functionally similar (ground-foraging Galliformes) species (northern bobwhite [Colinus virginianus], scaled quail [Callipepla squamata], and lesser prairie-chicken [Tympanuchus pallidicinctus]. Niche similarity representing increased syntopy was greatest during years with increased drought conditions (2013–2014). Niche differentiation was greatest in 2015 in which rangelands experienced the greatest amount of precipitation. Syntopy estimates were driven by variability in vegetation cover estimates, representing changes in rangeland conditions related to abiotic conditions. Our results suggest that syntopy can be highly dynamic across space and time and can be driven by variability in abiotic conditions (i.e., precipitation). Furthermore, these results suggest that habitat is in a state of non-equilibrium. Finally, we highlight that climate refuges that promote demographic resiliency through intraspecific changes in resource use are fundamental drivers of spatio-temporal patterns in community dynamics, particularly across similar functional species.

Antioxidants have important physiological roles in limiting the amount of oxidative damage that an organism experiences. One putative antioxidant is biliverdin, a pigment that is most commonly associated with the blue or green colors of avian eggshells. However, despite claims that biliverdin functions as an antioxidant, neither the typical physiological concentrations of biliverdin in most species nor the ability of biliverdin to oppose oxidative damage at these concentrations has been examined. Therefore, we quantified biliverdin in the plasma of six bird species and found that they circulated levels of biliverdin between 0.02 and 0.5 μM. We then used a pool of plasma from northern bobwhite quail (Colinus virginianus) and spiked it with one of seven different concentrations of biliverdin, creating plasma-based solutions ranging from 0.09 to 231 μM biliverdin. We then compared each solution's ability to oppose oxidative damage in response to hydrogen peroxide relative to a control addition of water. We found that hydrogen peroxide consistently induced moderate amounts of oxidative damage (quantified as reactive oxygen metabolites) but that no concentration of biliverdin ameliorated this damage. However, biliverdin and hydrogen peroxide interacted, as the amount of biliverdin in hydrogen peroxide–treated samples was reduced to approximately zero, unless the initial concentration was over 100 μM biliverdin. These preliminary findings based on in vitro work indicate that while biliverdin may have important links to metabolism and immune function, at physiologically relevant concentrations it does not detectably oppose hydrogen peroxide–induced oxidative damage in plasma. Private landowners who operate multifunctional landscapes play a critical role in the conservation of native and imperiled species, and the restoration of native ecosystems. In the southeastern United States, both northern bobwhite (Colinus virginianus) and pine savanna ecosystems are imperiled and heavily reliant on conservation efforts by private landowners. Engaging private landowners in the restoration and management of pine savannas and grasslands is essential to the recovery of northern bobwhite, which is also managed as a game species. Since the early 1900s, the cultural tradition of wild bobwhite hunting has motivated landowners to manage their properties to increase bobwhite populations. However, the costs and revenues associated with intensive wild bobwhite management and hunting are imperfectly understood. From May 2021 to February 2022, we conducted semistructured interviews with landowners and land managers of 37 wild bobwhite hunting properties (total of 65,317 ha in bobwhite management) in Alabama, Georgia, Florida, and South Carolina to enumerate the costs and revenues associated with intensive wild bobwhite management. Landowners spent an average of $154/acre/year (~$381/ha/year; median of $142/acre/year or ~$352/ha/year) to manage for northern bobwhite. These costs included salaries and benefits for labor, depreciated equipment and infrastructure expenditures, and other supplies (e.g., fuel, seed) needed to maintain wild bobwhite populations and their habitat. Few properties offset their bobwhite management costs with revenues generated on the property, including hunting revenues. Non‐financial motivations for owning a bobwhite property included a strong land stewardship ethic, the desire to maintain rural lifestyles and family heritage, and securing hunting and recreational opportunities. Through wild quail management, private landowners are helping to secure critical habitat for threatened and endangered species and increasing the landscape's overall resilience to climate change without the use of public funding. The effects of filter paper strip (FPS) storage time and temperature on antibody detection are poorly understood despite widespread use in wildlife research. We collected sera and FPSs from 23 wild turkeys (Meleagris gallopavo) and 20 northern bobwhites (Colinus virginianus) experimentally infected with West Nile virus (WNV) to compare FPS storage methods with WNV plaque reduction neutralization test (PRNT) sensitivity. FPS storage methods included: immediate elution after drying, and storage at −20°C for 3 mo, −20°C for 6 mo, room temperature (RT) for 3 mo, and RT for 6 mo prior to elution. FPS eluates and sera were co-titrated to determine endpoint antibody titers, which were compared between FPS sera eluted immediately and sera, and among FPS eluates that underwent different storage conditions. Antibody titers were ~4-fold less in FPS sera eluted immediately versus sera, and dropped more frequently below PRNT detection threshold in northern bobwhites, which had ~10-fold lower serum antibody titers than wild turkeys. Antibody titers were lower in FPS samples stored at RT and for 6 mo. WNV serologic surveys may result in falsely low seroprevalence estimates if FPSs are stored at RT for ≥ 3 mo before elution. Family forests comprise a significant portion of total forest land area in the southern United States and their owners frequently have multiple, competing objectives. This research evaluated the effectiveness of functional zoning based on site index on forest sizes relevant to family forest owners. A total of fifty family forests were randomly selected from twenty-five counties in the East Texas Pineywoods region. Timber production and northern bobwhite habitat (Colinus virginianus) habitat were used as proxies for competing objectives. It was found that 80% of family forest parcels had sufficient site index heterogeneity to benefit from functional zoning. For forest parcels that could benefit from functional zoning, the benefit in terms of increased land expectation value (LEV) was not found to be dependent on parcel size. On average, this approach increased the LEV $32/ac at a 3% discount rate, $16/ac at 5%, and $9/ac at 7%. Sericea lespedeza (Lespedeza cuneata) is an invasive nonnative legume that commonly occurs on sites managed for northern bobwhite (Colinus virginianus). Sericea reduces bobwhite habitat availability by outcompeting native plants that provide food and cover. Sericea can be controlled with postemergence herbicides such as glyphosate as well as a mixture of triclopyr with fluroxypyr, but these herbicides do not provide preemergence control. Imazapic has been effective at controlling a limited number of planted sericea seeds, but the efficacy of imazapic at various application rates to control sericea seedbank response following treatment with a postemergence herbicide has not been evaluated. We designed a field experiment to evaluate sericea control and changes in the plant community as related to bobwhite habitat with 2 postemergence herbicides followed by preemergence treatment of imazapic at 3 sites in Tennessee and Alabama, USA, 2018–2022. Specifically, we treated sericea with postemergence broadcast applications of glyphosate or triclopyr with fluroxypyr in 2018 and applied spot treatment with the same herbicides in 2019–2021. We applied imazapic at 4 rates following prescribed fire in 2019 and 2022. We measured coverage of sericea, native forbs, annual grasses, perennial grasses, and bobwhite food plants before treatment in 2018 and after all treatments in 2022. Nearly all postemergence treatments reduced sericea coverage, but imazapic did not increase control compared to postemergence herbicides alone. Perennial grasses used for nesting and bobwhite foraging were maintained following treatments. We recommend managers use either glyphosate or triclopyr with fluroxypyr to control sericea postemergence and consider using a low rate of imazapic to reduce annual grasses if coverage is a problem on the site. Behaviors associated with breeding can increase mortality risk. This increased risk can be thought of as a cost of reproduction. Increased movements prior to breeding are common as individuals search for food and breeding sites. These increased movements are thought to entail greater predation risks as individuals travel through unfamiliar areas but few studies have looked at how these prebreeding movements affect survival, especially at a fine temporal resolution. Costs of reproduction may also occur during reproduction. For birds, incubation and brood-rearing can increase predation risk because individuals spend most of their time at nest sites or with broods, which may make them more easily detected and captured by predators. Using time- and individual-specific predictors of survival, I examined the relationship between survival, movements, habitat use and breeding status of northern bobwhites Colinus virginianus in Colorado, USA. I found that prebreeding ranges were larger for breeders (29 ha) than non-breeders (18.7 ha) but daily movement distance was not different (163 m). Range size did not affect survival; however, longer recent daily movement distances (within 10 days) resulted in higher survival. Breeding status also affected survival; laying individuals experienced the highest daily survival rates followed by incubating, non-breeding and brood-rearing individuals. Bird populations have declined across North America over the past several decades. Bird monitoring programs are essential for monitoring populations, but often must strike a balance between efficiency of data collection and spatial biases. Species- or habitat-specialist-specific monitoring programs may be helpful for increasing efficiency of sampling and understanding effects of management actions, but may be subject to preferential sampling bias if they are used to assess large-scale occupancy or abundance and monitoring is largely focused in high-quality habitat. More general monitoring programs, such as the North American Breeding Bird Survey (BBS) and eBird, may not preferentially sample specialists' habitats but are subject to other forms of bias and often do not efficiently sample specialists' habitats. We used an integrated occupancy model combining data from eBird, BBS, and Illinois state surveys of upland game bird habitat areas to estimate drivers of Northern Bobwhite (Colinus virginianus) and Ring-Necked Pheasant (Phasianus colchicus) occupancy and compare inference from single-visit, multi-visit, and integrated monitoring programs. We fit sets of candidate models using every combination of the 3 datasets except for eBird by itself, to better understand how differences in spatial biases between programs affect ecological inference. We found that, for both bobwhite and pheasant, state surveys of upland habitat increased the predictive ability of models, and BBS data usually improved inference on occupancy parameters when it was integrated with other data sources. Integrating multiple data sources partially resolved the spatial gaps in each monitoring program, while also increasing precision of parameter estimates. Integrated models may be capable of combining the higher sampling efficiency of targeted monitoring programs with the more even spatial coverage of broad-scale monitoring programs.
