The human olfactory system is not well understood, although it is known it has several deficiencies. By analysing the mechanism associated with the sense of smell it has been possible to make electronic and chemical versions of the human nose, known as olfactory sensory array systems. An overview of the new electronic nose technology is presented, plus a description of an electronic nose developed by GEC-Marconi Materials Technology Ltd.'s Hirst Division.
