Abstract

In recent decades, the economic importance of maintaining machines, equipment, and production facilities has prompted many scholars to examine various aspects of the maintenance of physical assets. However, the industry continues to face the recurring problem of improving product and equipment maintenance processes. New opportunities for improving these processes arise from Industry 4.0 technologies because they make it possible to realize better solutions to the problem of predictive maintenance. Starting from a Big Data and Internet of Things (IoT) architecture as a reference, this paper proposes an abstract framework for predictive maintenance using unsupervised learning models to support decision-making in maintenance programs. From the abstract framework, a predictive maintenance system was developed to enable effective just-in-time maintenance strategies. An unsupervised machine learning algorithm, based on the Gauxian mixtures model, allows us to study the influence on a machine's behavior of a single variable, a group of variables of the same type, and combined variables of different types. The algorithm provides experts with information on which part of the machine they need to focus on to find potential causes of future failures. The case study conducted for an Italian automotive company shows preliminary results on the effectiveness of the approach. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

3. BambApp: A citizen science project for the re-evaluation of the invasive potential of bamboo species in North-West Italy

Abstract

Several bamboo species, suitable for temperate climates, have been introduced from southern China as ornamental plants in Europe and in Italy since the XIX century. Bamboos were appreciated also for other commercial purposes afterwards (e.g., food and structural applications) and nowadays in NW Italy (Piedmont and Aosta Valley Regions) the interest in their plantation has been growing. Consequently, many public authorities responsible for environment and biodiversity protection expressed a precautionary attitude for the commerce of bamboos. ‘BambApp’ project was implemented to scrutinize the invasive potential of naturalized bamboo species with a ‘citizen science’ approach, which implied the support of volunteers to collect scientific information through the use of “iNaturalist” app for smartphones. Citizens described each recorded bamboo clump in terms of maximum height, maximum stem diameter, and clump size. The coordinates and a description of the habitat type on the border of the four sides for each clump were required to volunteers as well. Moreover, surveyors had to upload four pictures of the clump, which were used to identify the bamboos at species level. In a ten-month period, 871 validated bamboo populations were recorded in the two regions and nine different species identified. The most widespread species was Phyllostachys aurea (67%), followed by Phyllostachis viridiglaucescens (16%), Pseudosasa japonica (6%), Phyllostachys reticulata (5%), Phyllostachys nigra (2%), Phyllostachys flexuosa (2%), Phyllostachys sulfurea (2%), and Phyllostachys edulis (1%). To quantify the invasive potential of bamboo species a Principal Component Analysis was carried out by using variables related to clump growth. Average elevation ranged between 252 m and 431 m a.s.l. and the clump size ranged between an average of about 27 m2 and about 2160 m2. 8. Optimization of a device for the fumigation process

Abstract

It has been optimized a device that performs the dried agricultural products disinfestation by fumigation process with phosphine gas. Moreover, it allows to completely exhaust the active principle contained in the pellets of magnesium and aluminium phosphide used in the fumigation process, and to complete the phosphine production process, ordinarily of 5 days, in 2 days. Further, the device results particularly convenient during the fumigation process performed in cold periods; in facts, it is equipped with a pellets heating device that improves the phosphine production. Further it allows the continuous remixing of the pellets during the fumigation process and the control of the humidity by mean of water injection. The prototype is composed of : - cylindrical tray in stainless steel, containing the pellets of magnesium and aluminium phosphide, and it is connected to an electrical heater with a thermostatic device for the tray temperature control; - electric engine for the rotation of the cylindrical tray; - two bars that sustain 5 harmonic steel sheets with the extremity folded up downward with an angle of 90°. Such sheets, thanks to their elasticity, follow the fund of the tray. Besides they are of different length, so that they allow a good remixing. By mean ANSYS code it has been possible also to evaluate the goodness of the performed remixing. - a water sprinkler connected to an electrical valve that performs the environmental hygrometric control. In such way the value of the environmental humidity is kept optimal to have the maximum phosphine production and therefore the considered process results very fast. In the definition of the device geometries it has been used a 3D CAD program: Solid Works. It has allowed to define a parametric model of the considered device. Some experimental tests have been performed to determine the amount of water flow to obtain the optimal humidity value and to avoid dangers of fires caused by the pellets, sprinkling a water quantity ranged from 1/40 to 10 ml for every ¼ of round of the cylindrical tray. Moreover some tests have been performed to determine the optimal heating temperature considering 4 different temperatures: 30, 40, 50, 60 °C, and evaluating the phosphine quantity produced in such conditions. Besides the process of remixing has been optimized, performed by the steel sheets opportunely shaped. All of this has allowed to completely exhaust the magnesium and aluminium phosphide contained in the inlet pellets

Abstract

E' stata progettata e realizzata un'attrezzatura per effettuare fumigazioni, mediante fosfina, di prodotti agricoli che consente il completo esaurimento del principio attivo contenuto nei formulati a base di fosfuro di alluminio e di magnesio. Il dispositivo consente di ridurre il tempo di produzione di fosfina da 5 a 2 giorni; in aggiunta è possibile effettuare fumigazioni anche in condizioni di temperatura ambientale inferiore a 10°C. La condizione ottimale del rimescolamento dei pellet è stata ottenuta mediante una simulazione numerica successivamente verificata sperimentalmente.

Abstract

Many organizations that conceive their work in terms of goal to pursue wish to determine the knowledge requirement in order to assess resources, steps and necessary efforts to reach the goal. It is indeed a complex process that can receive support from other organizations available to share their know how with other organizations participating to a network of cooperating organizations. In this work we propose a distributed framework oriented to the knowledge management within a network of organizations that pursue similar or shared goals. Starting from the goal identification, the assessment of knowledge requirements to acquire is obtained using the Goal/Question/Metrics approach. The organization that wants to acquire useful knowledge toward the achievement of shared goals, evaluates the necessary effort and provides to other organizations, in explicit form, its experience for what concerns the aspects knowledge as objects and knowledge as processes. Two case studies show possible applications of the proposed framework.

Abstract

AToday systems finalized to knowledge creation, maintenance and diffusion into a social network are pushed to accelerate growing of their performances by competitive factors. There have been few researches on how to control this growth and make it compliant with characteristics of social network. This work aims to propose a model to create knowledge networks useful to control absorptive capacity inside the variety of levels we can find into a social network. The paper discusses an application of the model to an educational system made of nodes defined at several levels. The model provides some guideline to implement software that supports the performance empowerment of network in terms of absorptive and adaptive capacities.

Abstract

The problem of knowledge management in a distributed network is receiving increasing attention from both scientific and industrial organizations. Research efforts in this field are motivated by the awareness that knowledge is more and more perceived as a primary economic resource and that, in the context of organization of organizations, the augmented management complexity of its whole life cycle requires new reference models. In this paper, we build on recent research work to propose a distributed knowledge management framework that can be used in several application domains. First we discuss the role of identity, negotiation and trust in a distributed knowledge network, then we introduce a framework for the knowledge management that extends previous works towards the knowledge management in a network of organizations. Finally, we discuss a case study as a particular instance of the presented framework to handle the problem of risk management in enterprise alliance partnerships.

Abstract

Habitat monitoring in Europe is regulated by Article 17 of the Habitats Directive, which suggests the use of typical species to assess habitat conservation status. Yet, the Directive uses the term “typical” species but does not provide a definition, either for its use in reporting or for its use in impact assessments. To address the issue , a n online workshop was organized by the Italian Society for Vegetation Science (SISV) to shed light on the diversity of perspectives regarding the different concepts of typical species, and to discuss the possible implications for habitat monitoring. To this aim, we inquired 73 people with a very different degree of expertise in the field of vegetation science by means of a tailored survey composed of six questions. We analysed the data using Pearson's Chi-squared test to verify that the answers diverged from a random distribution and checked the effect of the degree of experience of the surveyees on the results. We found that most of the surveyees agreed on the use of the phytosociological method for habitat monitoring and of the diagnostic and characteristic species to evaluate the structural and functional conservation status of habitats. With this contribution, we shed light on the meaning of “typical” species in the context of habitat monitoring.

48. BambApp: a citizen science project for the re-evaluation of the invasive potential of bamboo species in North-West Italy

Abstract

Several bamboo species, suitable for temperate climates, have been introduced from southern China as ornamental plants in Europe and in Italy since the XIX century. Bamboos were appreciated also for other commercial purposes afterwards (e.g., food and structural applications) and nowadays in NW Italy (Piedmont and Aosta Valley Regions) the interest in their plantation has been growing. Consequently, many public authorities responsible for environment and biodiversity protection expressed a precautionary attitude for the commerce of bamboos. ‘BambApp’ project was implemented to scrutinize the invasive potential of naturalized bamboo species with a ‘citizen science’ approach, which implied the support of volunteers to collect scientific information through the use of “iNaturalist” app for smartphones. Citizens described each recorded bamboo clump in terms of maximum height, maximum stem diameter, and clump size. The coordinates and a description of the habitat type on the border of the four sides for each clump were required to volunteers as well. Moreover, surveyors had to upload four pictures of the clump, which were used to identify the bamboos at species level. In a ten-month period, 871 validated bamboo populations were recorded in the two regions and nine different species identified. The most widespread species was Phyllostachys aurea (67%), followed by Phyllostachis viridiglaucescens (16%), Pseudosasa japonica (6%), Phyllostachys reticulata (5%), Phyllostachys nigra (2%), Phyllostachys flexuosa (2%), Phyllostachys sulfurea (2%), and Phyllostachys edulis (1%). To quantify the invasive potential of bamboo species a Principal Component Analysis was carried out by using variables related to clump growth. Average elevation ranged between 252 m and 431 m a.s.l. and the clump size ranged between an average of about 27 m2 and about 2160 m2. Phyllostachis reticulata and P. sulfurea were the tallest species with the largest stem diameters, whereas P. aurea was the species forming the largest clumps in terms of occupied surface. The 82% of populations bordered for at least one side with anthropic habitats, 60% with agricultural habitats, and 45% with natural habitats. ‘BambApp’ project, through a citizen science network, successfully provided reliable and comprehensive information to public authorities for re-evaluating the invasive potential of bamboo species in NW Italy and for regulating their commerce.

Abstract

The nicotine content of the tobacco powder completely degrades in one week when it is added to a non manured soil. If some organic manure is added to the soil so as to sensibly increase the microbial flora, then nicotine degrades in less than twenty-four hours. In sterilized soil nicotine content is constant over the time because of the total absence of microorganism. In the determination of the nicotine in the soil, accurate analytical results can be obtained by adding methanol to the soil sample at the moment of the sampling. Methanol degrades the enzymatic systems causing a soil sterilization and avoids, therefore, the degradation of the alkaloid. The extracted nicotine is analyzed by means of high performance liquid chromatography in a rapid and accurate manner.

Abstract

A simpler and faster procedure than the official one described in document IV of European Economic Community Regulation 183/93 is proposed. The wax ester fraction is isolated from triglycerides using a commercially available silica gel column and carbon tetrachloride as eluent. The recovered wax ester fraction, with the addition of a suitable internal standard solution, is analyzed by gas chromatography. A column with a 65% phenyl methyl silicone stationary phase allows a satisfying separation of wax ester fraction in comparison with both a steryl ester and a light fraction eluted before the internal standard. Furthermore, also the single components of the wax ester fraction are suitably separated.
