Background. Food intake in Cameroon is based on three meals daily. The diet in rural areas is based on traditional staple foods, while that of the urban population incorporates more modern foods. The health and nutrition of adolescents is important as their eating behaviour and nutrition will affect their future health.Objective. To describe and compare food habits and nutritional status of adolescents in Cameroon.Design. A cross-sectional study using an unquantified food frequency questionnaire and anthropometric data, in urban and rural areas. Fifty-two adolescents, 12-15 years old, were selected from schools.Results. Frequencies of consumption of meat, vegetables, cereals, milk products and junk food were significantly higher in urban than in rural adolescents (11.8 vs 4.5, 9.5 vs 3.9, 16.5 vs 11.9, 5.7 vs 0.8, 24.2 vs 8.7, respectively). The frequency of in-between meals was higher in urban than in rural adolescents (4.9 vs 0.9, respectively). Arm muscle area (AMA, mm[2]) and waist/hip ratio were significantly higher in rural than in urban adolescents (3554 vs 2802 and 0.82 vs 0.79, respectively). Body mass index (BMI, kg m[-2]) was higher in rural than urban adolescents, although not significant (20.6 vs 19.4, respectively). There was a positive significant correlation between BMI and AMA in urban and rural areas (r=0.67 and r=0. 72, respectively).Conclusions. Despite a lower frequency of food consumption, rural adolescents had higher AMA and waist/hip ratio than urban adolescents. Abstract Background Available definition criteria for metabolic syndrome (MS) have similarities and inconsistencies. The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of MS in a group of Cameroonians with type 2 diabetes, according to the International Diabetes Federation (IDF) and the National Cholesterol Education Programme Adult Treatment Panel III (NCEP-ATP III) criteria, and to assess the concordance between both criteria, and the implications of combining them. Methods We collected clinical and biochemical data for 308 patients with type 2 diabetes (men 157) at the National Obesity Center of the Yaounde Central Hospital, Cameroon. Concordance was assessed with the use of the Kappa statistic. Results Mean age (standard deviation) was 55.8 (10.5) years and the median duration of diagnosed diabetes (25th–75th percentiles) was 3 years (0.5–5.0), similarly among men and women. The prevalence of MS was 71.7% according to the IDF criteria and 60.4% according to NCEP-ATP III criteria. The prevalence was significantly higher in women than in men independently of the criteria used (both p Conclusions The IDF and NCEP-ATP III criteria do not always diagnose the same group of diabetic individuals with MS and combining them merely increases the yield beyond that provided by the IDF definition alone. This study highlights the importance of having a single unifying definition for MS in our setting.

Accurate estimates of the prevalence rate of hypertension and determinants in Cameroon are crucial to inform efficient prevention and control policies. The authors carried out a cluster-specific cross-sectional survey in urban areas of the 10 regions of Cameroon to assess the prevalence and risk factors of hypertension in Cameroonian adults using the WHO STEPwise approach to Surveillance (STEPS). Sociodemographic data were collected and blood pressure and glycemia were measured using standardized methods. Participants were adults of both sexes aged 16 years or older. A total of 15,470 participants were surveyed. The age-standardized prevalence rate of hypertension was 29.7%. The awareness rate was 14.1%. Independent correlates of hypertension included higher age, male sex, obesity, hyperglycemia, and living in the Savannah zone. The prevalence of hypertension is high in urban areas of Cameroon, with very low awareness. The purpose of this report is to describe the first Cameroonian case of disseminated histoplasmosis due to Histoplasma capsulatum capsulatum in association with HIV infection. The patient was a 34-year-old HIV1 infected woman. Diagnosis of histoplamosis was made in post-mortem. The similarity of the clinical symptoms with disseminated tuberculosis makes diagnosis of mycosis difficult. Active and effective care of histoplasmosis is urgently necessary for the HIV infected persons.

In the framework of implementation of his national program for control and prevention of cardiovascular diseases, Cameroonian government has set up a cardiac surgery project. We report in this manuscript results of one year follow up of the patients operated during the pilot phase. From September 22 till 26, 2008, 11 patients have been operated in Cameroun. Surgical procedures were 5 mitral mechanic valve replacement, 2 aortic mechanic valve replacement, 1 atrial septal defect closure, 2 pace maker implantation. No intrahospital death was observed. One patient died at 11th month after the operation due to mitral valve thrombosis and attributed to lack of compliance. One patient presented low cardiac output, pneumonia and a pleural effusion. 2 patients presented 2 minor complications consisting of pericarditis and superficial wound infection. The results of the pilot phase of cardiac surgery in Cameroon are effective. However, the sustainability of the program require human, material capacity building, and funding mechanism as well.

The aim of this study was to assess adolescents' nutritional status according to socioeconomic status (SES) and sex using anthropometry in urban Cameroon, Africa. Adolescent boys (n = 248) and girls (n = 333) 12 to 16 years old were recruited from randomly selected schools in a cross sectional study in Yaoundé city and grouped according to SES. Weight, height, skinfold thickness, and circumferences were measured, and body mass index, waist/hip ratio, arm muscle, and arm fat areas were calculated. Stunting, underweight, and overweight were determined using international cutoff points. Adolescents with medium and high SES were less likely to be stunted than adolescents with low SES (odds ratio [OR], 0.40; P < .01). Prevalences of stunting (12%, 6%, and 5%) and underweight (3%, 4%, and 1%) were higher among the adolescents with low and medium SES than those with high SES. Overweight prevalence was high among the adolescents with low (8%), medium (11%), and high (9%) SES. The OR for overweight was higher among girls than boys (OR, 4.13; P < .001). Girls were less likely to be stunted and underweight than boys (OR, 0.29 [P < .001] and OR, 0.20 [P < .01], respectively). Prevalences of stunting (15% and 6%) and underweight (5% and 2%) were higher among boys than girls. Pubescent adolescents were less likely to be stunted than nonpubescent (OR, 0.53; P < .05). Adolescents with low and medium SES were more underweight and stunted than adolescents with high SES. Girls were more overweight, less stunted, and underweight than boys.

Unlabelled: We analysing 8 cases of diabetes secondary to primary hemochromatosis in a group of black diabetic patients in Yaoundé. Diagnosis of primary hemochromatosis is based on clinical and biological arguments. Central hypogonadism is associated to diabetes in 75%, dilated cardiomyopathy existed in 37.5%, arthropathy in 75%. Diabetes is mostly type II., Conclusion: Secondary diabetes to primary hemochromatosis does exist in Black Africa. Diagnosis should be in the mind of clinician when in a diabetic patients are associated: central hypogonadism, dilated cardiomyopathy and chronic arthropathy. In the future diagnosis of hemochromatosis will be easier by genetic because of recent discovery of the gene of the disease.

We have undertaken an epidemiological and the treatment modality of diabetic foot in Yaounde Diabetic Center. 5315 patients have included in the study 1275, 23.98% have lesions of the diabetic foot. Neuropathy lesions are more frequent. Gangrenous lesion represent 4.39% with high level of total amputation. Patients are young, with short history of diabetes. Infection is present in 89% of cases. Health education is the only modality to be undertaken to prevent diabetic foot more frequent in our environment.

The purpose of this report was to describe clinical and ultrasound findings associated with venous thromboembolism of the lower extremities and pulmonary embolism observed in our department with special emphasis on the utility of venous ultrasound in the diagnosis of venous thromboembolism. Between January 1, 1998 and December 31, 1999, a total of 47 venous ultrasound procedures were carried out according to the standard technique using a Logic 400 MD system (General Electric). Deep venous thrombosis was diagnosed in 18 cases (38.3%). There were 10 men and 8 women with a mean age of 46 years (range, 24 to 71 years). Thrombosis involved the internal saphenous, popliteal, or sural vein in 12 cases, the common or deep femoral vein in 4, and the external iliac vein in 2. The most common risk factors observed in our series were surgery, predisposing conditions, history of venous thrombosis and morbid obesity (66.8% of case). Prolonged periods of bed confinement and neoplasm (lower extremity Kaposi's disease) were more uncommon (22.2%). Pulmonary embolism occurred during the observation period in six cases (33.3%) including 3 (50%) that were fatal. Based on these findings it can be concluded that although its incidence is relatively low in black African patients at risk, thromboembolic disease is often fatal and requires routine preventive treatment using heparin.

We analysed the epidemiological, clinical, biological, morphological and therapeutic characteristics of 36 cases of pituitary prolactinomas in Yaoundé, Cameroun. Diagnosis was made on the basis of neuro-ophthalmological, gynaecological and sexual symptoms associated with quantity determinations of prolactinemia, total testosterone and blood oestrogen, folliculo stimulating hormone and luteining hormone. Expected levels of prolactinemia are above 150 micrograms/l. Cerebral tomodensitometry and, where possible, magnetic resonance imaging were used. Among the 24 patients on whom a tomodensitometry was performed, 4 male patients presented macroprolactinomas; the remaining 20 patients--mostly female--had microprolactinomas. Macroprolactinomas were found in male patients only, leading to an acute ophthalmological emergency for 2 of them who were operated in Paris-France. All the patients were put on bromocriptine; this molecule has antisecretory and antiproliferative properties, which are very useful in Africa, since surgery is very expensive. Cases of resistance to the molecule exist and new dopaminergic agonists are not yet being used in Cameroon.

At the Gyneco-obstetric service of the Yaounde CHU, we have studied 361 cases of couple sterility. In 38%, the man was responsible. Among these patients, less than 50% had a complete hormonal checkup. The hormonal cause of sterility was confirmed in 63 patients by static tests using the radio-immunologic method. These hormonal abnormalities were most the result of a primary testicular insufficiency (23.8%) and seminifer tube abnormalities (38.5%).
