This research investigates how a mobile-based archive application and digital literacy impact pre-service administrators' understanding of the smart village concept in rural governance. It uses a quantitative approach with a questionnaire given to 100 pre-service administrators to evaluate their attitudes towards these factors. Validity and reliability tests were conducted as part of the data analysis, and the data were assessed for normality assumption. The data were then analyzed using a multiple linear regression model. The coefficient of determination, which is 99.3%, suggests that nearly all variables related to the smart village concept can be explained through the archive application and digital literacy variables. Furthermore, the mobile-based archive application and digital literacy have a positive and significant impact on understanding the smart village concept, both simultaneously (0.000<0.05) and partially (0.000<0.05). We found a negative t value (-5.739) for the understanding of the smart village concept, which can be improved through the mobile-based archive application (9.299) and digital literacy (6.538) variables. The implications from these findings indicate that pre-service administrators in rural governance recognize the need for improvement in their understanding of the smart village concept.

This reflexive autoethnography explores my experience of learning about myself as I experienced painting with watercolors. The focus of this research is understanding the interaction of identity, emotion, and belonging within the context of my own adult learning experience. The central emphasis seeks to offer contributing factors to adult learning in a context outside of formal learning opportunities, such as in university or school-based learning. I employed the reflexive process of autoethnography through journal entries, photographic documentation, and recalling to examine my own experience of learning in a non-academic setting. Various theories of self-identity, participation, and learning were explored to frame my own learning experience. This methodological approach allowed the pursuit of adult learning to emerge as something deeply intertwined with an individual's understanding of their identity, affective experiences, and sense of belonging. These considerations have capacity to further current conceptualizations of the process of adult learning experiences. Implications for facilitators of adult learning are offered.

Immersive technologies are assumed to have many benefits for learning due to their potential positive impact on optimizing learners' cognitive load and fostering intrinsic motivation. However, despite promising results, the findings regarding the actual impact on learning remain inconclusive, raising questions about the determinants of efficacy. To address these gaps, we conducted a PRISMA systematic review to investigate the contributions and limitations of virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) in learning, specifically by examining their effects on cognitive load and intrinsic motivations. Through the application of an analytical grid, we systematically classified the impact of VR/AR on the causal relationship between learning performance (ie, objective learning improvement) and cognitive load or motivation, while respecting the fundamental assumptions of the main theories related to these factors. Analysing 36 studies, the findings reveal that VR, often causing extraneous load, hinders learning, particularly among novices. In contrast, AR optimizes cognitive load, proving beneficial for novice learners but demonstrating less effectiveness for intermediate learners. The effects on intrinsic motivation remain inconclusive, likely due to variations in measurement methods. The review underscores the need for detailed, sophisticated evaluations and comprehensive frameworks that consider both cognitive load and intrinsic motivation to improve understanding of the impact of immersive technologies on learning.

Pedagogical content knowledge (PCK) has framed teacher education for decades, despite the difficulty of demonstrating that teacher preparation effectively develops PCK. Social studies educators have been especially wary of PCK, but their critiques have primarily challenged what knowledge is valued rather than its model of how teachers learn. This comparative case study reexamines PCK's cognitivist assumptions by analyzing three preservice social studies teachers' teaching and reflections from a situated perspective on role identity development. Despite unusual amounts of pedagogical experience and content knowledge, each novice had trouble facilitating whole class discussions. Their struggles did not emerge at the intersection of pedagogy and content, but within their role identity negotiations. These results suggest that a situated framework for identity development is a useful alternative to PCK in social studies teacher preparation and recommend deeper engagement with identity development through teacher education practice.

Teachers' negative experiences of high-stakes accountability have been documented extensively, but the ways in which teachers are able to engage in tactics of resistance in response are less well known. This is most especially true in terms of the subtle, covert forms of resistance which occur through the practice of teachers' everyday working lives. This paper contributes through a novel exploratory application of 'Metis', a framework for understanding tactics of resistance derived from the thought of Detienne and Vernant (1978). When Metis is harnessed alongside de Certeau's (1984) notion of the practice of everyday life, it provides an innovative means of exploring the complex, elusive and intricate ways in which teachers pursue tactics of resistance within a context of high-stakes accountability. By so doing, it demonstrates how teachers are able to evade or resist high-stakes accountability in order to pursue their own educational goals. Thus, the article also adds to an understanding of the gap between policy formulation and its enactment. This initial exploratory study contributes to the literature by offering a transferable conceptual approach which is recommended for broader use while identifying some important considerations which attend the empirical application of Metis.

A posttest-only control group experimental design compared novice Arduino programmers who developed their own programs (self-programming group, n = 17) with novice Arduino programmers who used ChatGPT 3.5 to write their programs (ChatGPT-programming group, n = 16) on the dependent variables of programming scores, interest in Arduino programming, Arduino programming self-efficacy, Arduino programming posttest scores, and types of programming errors. Students were undergraduates in an introductory agricultural systems technology course in Fall 2023. The results indicated no significant (p < 0.10) differences between groups for programming rubric scores (p = 0.50) or interest in Arduino programming (p = 0.50). There were significant differences for Arduino programming self-efficacy, (p = 0.03, Cohen's d = 0.75) and Arduino posttest scores, (p = 0.03, Cohen's d = 0.76); students in the self-programming group scored significantly higher on both measures. Analysis of students' errors indicated the ChatGPT group made significantly (p < 0.01) more program punctuation errors. These results indicated novice students writing their own programs developed greater Arduino programming self-efficacy and programming ability than novice students using ChatGPT. Nevertheless, ChatGPT may still play an important role in assisting novices to write microcontroller programs.

There is a consensus amongst scholars that learning from student feedback depends on how the feedback is sought and used by the individual teachers. Using Hand and Rowe's (2001) framework of eliciting and using student feedback, the purpose of this self-study was to investigate how I, as a novice teacher educator, can use dialogue with my students to learn about and how to foster student interaction in my biology classroom. I collected data through multiple sources including students' written feedback, my reflective journal, focus-group interviews with the students, and video recordings of my teaching. Data were analysed through a narrative approach. Findings indicate that the continuous dialogue with my students helped me learn about student interaction and fostering it in my classroom through a variety of ways. This study also illustrates that the teacher needs to establish trust with students from the onset such that the dialogue cannot only be of professional value to the teacher but also improve the students' learning. These insights are discussed, and recommendations are made in the article.

The study examined the content of methods used in amateur guitar education, namely "Guitar Method for Children" (Bülent Isbilen & Özhan Gölebatmaz), "Classical Guitar Method" (Ahmet Kanneci), "Easy Training Method for Classical Guitar" (Bülent Isbilen & Güray Demir), "Classical Guitar Method" (Murat Isbilen), "Arenas I" (Rodriguez Arenas), "Guitar Method I" (Ziya Aydintan), and "Introductory Method for Classical Guitar" (Bekir Küçükay). The research employed a scanning model. In the data collection phase, methods were obtained, and their contents were examined for topics such as the Historical Development of Classical Guitar, Basic Information, Tuning of the Guitar, Nails, Starting Positions, Visuals, Study and Piece Descriptions, Speed Terminology, and Table of Contents. The results, presented in tables, revealed that two of the methods lacked a table of contents, speed terminology was only presented in one method for all pieces and studies, and topics such as nails and tuning of the guitar were not covered in most methods.

This article explains and illustrates an approach to the design of qualitative inquiry in education using a conceptual methodology informed by a realist ontology. It is written with research novices in mind, based on two observations we have made while supervising postgraduate students. The first is that the methodology literature education students often engage with tends to focus on interpretivist-constructivist approaches. The second observation is that it can be challenging for students to find appealing and accessible material which employs realist informed methodology. To counter this we offer a general introduction to undertaking educational research informed by a realist ontology drawing on a simplified account of critical realism (CR). We illustrate the key concepts of this approach using examples from postgraduate studies in education. It is our hope that this article may stimulate wider discussion about the possibilities, development, and use of realist approaches.

Despite coverage of materials development principles in the applied linguistics literature, principled production of open textbooks has not received attention. To address this gap and demonstrate the interdisciplinary potential of materials development research, the authors drew upon concurrent verbalization and interview data they collected while composing their first coursebook, a freely available open textbook designed for first-year university writing courses that enroll English first-language and second-language learners, to discern how they applied principles. Qualitative content analysis of the data indicated the novice textbook writers focused on learning objectives to negotiate textbook relevancy and currency concerns, tried to create relatable content, and employed varied repetition and layering to build modular chapters. This study illustrates the generalizability of materials development research and principles and offers a view of open textbook authorship for teachers interested in the activity.

Background: One of the most promising experiential learning approaches in the field of management education is the classroom as organization (CAO), in which students create and run an organization as part of class activities. The CAO contributes to student development in many ways, including by helping students develop teamwork skills, real-world problem-solving capabilities, and emotional intelligence. Purpose: To explore the impact of the CAO on university-to-work transitions and early careers, a challenging time marked by ambiguity, uncertainty, and anxiety. Methodology/Approach: We used a qualitative analysis of semi-structured interviews with former students from three generations of a CAO. Findings/Conclusions: Findings show that the CAO helps students obtain "realistic" work skills, facilitate career decisions, and develop career adaptability. Implications: The CAO can serve as a powerful career intervention that integrates many of the benefits of simulations and internships.

When learning spoken second language (L2), words overlapping in form and meaning with one's native language (L1) help break into the new language. When nonsigning speakers learn a sign language as L2, such overlaps are absent because of the modality differences (L1: speech, L2: sign). In such cases, nonsigning speakers might use iconic form-meaning mappings in signs or their own gestural experience as gateways into the to-be-acquired sign language. In this study, we investigated how both these phenomena may contribute jointly to the acquisition of sign language vocabulary by hearing nonsigners. Participants were presented with three types of signs in the Sign Language of the Netherlands (NGT): arbitrary signs, iconic signs with high or low gesture overlap. Signs that were both iconic and highly overlapping with gestures boosted learning most at first exposure, and this effect remained the day after. Findings highlight the influence of modality-specific attributes supporting the acquisition of a signed lexicon.

The study investigates the potential of anxiety clusters in predicting programming performance in two distinct coding environments. Participants comprised 83 second-year programming students who were randomly assigned to either a block-based or a text-based group. Anxiety-induced behaviors were assessed using physiological measures (Apple Watch and Electrocardiogram machine), behavioral observation, and self-report. Utilizing the Hidden Markov Model and Optimal Matching algorithm, we found three representative clusters in each group. In the block-based group, clusters were designated as follows: "stay calm" (students allocating more of their time to a calm state), "stay hesitant" (students allocating more of their time to a hesitant state), and "to-calm" (those allocating minimal time to a hesitant and anxious state but displaying a pronounced propensity to transition to a calm state). In contrast, clusters in the text-based group were labeled as: "to-hesitant" (exhibiting a higher propensity to transition to a hesitant state), "stay hesitant" (allocating significant time to a hesitant state), and "stay anxious" (remaining persistently anxious in a majority of the coding time). Additionally, our results indicate that novice programmers are more likely to experience anxiety during text-based coding. We discussed the findings and highlighted the policy implications of the study.

This survey of US copy editors, proofreaders, and fact-checkers (N = 472) examines practitioners' perceptions of the skills and training required for the field. The participants recommended that new hires be skilled in grammar, sentence structure, working on deadline, time management, accuracy, fact-checking, and critical thinking; they disagreed about whether certain skills are innate or whether they can be taught. They also disagreed about whether such training should occur in universities or through on-the-job mentoring.

Digital literacy is essential in writing research articles for publication in today's digital age, particularly for novice English as a foreign language (EFL) teacher trying to publish their research articles. This qualitative research explores the digital literacy practices of novice EFL teachers in writing research articles for publication, including the digital tools they use, their purposes for using these tools, and the challenges they face in using them. The data were collected using a questionnaire and interview. The study found that novice EFL teachers conceptualized digital literacy as the ability to search and evaluate credible online sources, using word processing and digital editing tools, collaborating online, and publishing their work digitally. Novice EFL teachers use various digital tools, such as word processing software, reference management software, and online academic databases, to improve their research and writing process. They use these tools for various purposes, such as collaborating with peers, improving their writing skills, and publishing their work online. However, novice EFL teachers face limited technical issues, limited access, inadequate technology infrastructure, and time management. It is recommended that academic institutions provide support to help novice EFL teachers develop their digital literacy skills, including technical support services, and training programs.

Little is still known about interaction patterns learners form while exchanging peer feedback particularly when working with different peers. To address this gap, this study analyzes patterns of interaction while exchanging feedback on academic paragraphs written by 16 English as a foreign language (EFL) learners enrolled at a state university in Türkiye. The participants were asked to write three academic paragraphs and submit them online. They were paired with a different student for each paragraph feedback session and exchanged their paragraphs. Then they held an online meeting on Microsoft Teams with their partner and exchanged feedback. The meetings were recorded. Next, the students revised their paragraphs considering the peer feedback. They made the changes on their paragraphs only if they found the peer feedback useful and necessary. Patterns of interaction in the recordings were analyzed according to Storch's (2002) framework. According to it, there are four interaction patterns placed on mutuality and equality axes and named as collaborative, dominant/dominant, dominant/passive, and expert/novice. The results showed that the most common pattern was expert/novice. That means in the majority of the peer feedback sessions reviewers controlled the task, but both participants showed engagement. Around half of the participants were consistent in their patterns both as a reviewer and a writer. This study is believed to shed light on EFL learners' roles as writers and reviewers. It is also believed that with a comprehensive peer feedback training, learners could be encouraged to form more collaborative patterns, which is associated with better learning outcomes.

Background: South Africa's teacher retention crisis calls for policy makers, school leaders and teachers to explore ways for professional growth. This study examined six novice teachers' experiences and views on continuous professional development (CPD) and how it benefits teachers as they transition from mentees to mentors. Aim: The study aimed to explore novice teachers' engagement with CPD within the context of foundation phase (FP) teaching. It specifically investigated their understanding of CPD in communities of practice and how they preferred to be inducted, mentored and coached. Setting: This qualitative case study was conducted in six inner-city public primary schools in urban Johannesburg, South Africa. Methods: The research followed a case study design, using semi-structured interviews with six novice teachers to gather data. Results: The findings revealed the significance of informal mentorship, offering support despite the absence of formal structures in FP settings. This highlights the need for educational institutions to establish formal mentorship opportunities to promote professional development and well-being of teachers. Conclusion: CPD goes beyond fulfilling professional requirements -- it empowers teachers. By upskilling and reskilling, CPD prepares teachers to meet modern teaching challenges. Contributions: This research adds to the limited literature on novice teachers' experiences with CPD in FP. It highlights CPD's crucial role in enhancing pedagogical strategies, supporting diverse learners, improving teacher wellness, and informing educational policy and leadership decisions.

Background: Expertise in scientific and grant writing are essential in health science research and practice. Quality scientific and grant writing are uncommon in Uganda which is partly responsible for the low quality and quantity of research outputs. To address this, the Makerere University Walter Reed Project (MUWRP)implemented Strengthening Institutional Capacity for Research Administration in Uganda (SICRA). Methods: SICRA conducted 3-day face-to-face and virtual training workshops in scientific and grant writing targeting early-career scientists (ECS) at institutions involved in health research and graduate training in Uganda. Mentorship and follow-up were by phone call, email and face-to-face meetings as required. To determine the effect of SICRA interventions, we conducted a quasi-experimental impact assessment among trainees using a semi-structured questionnaire. Results: 245 ECS attended SICRA workshops on grant writing (37.2%), scientific writing (33.3%), or both(28.2%). Seventy-eight trainees (32%) participated in the impact assessment. A majority of respondents (60.3%) had a master's degree; 83% were full-time employees at a research or academic institution and 97.4% were involved in health research. Before SICRA, only 34.6%of respondents had written a manuscript, 19.2% had submitted at least one manuscript for institutional internal review and 25.6% had been published. After SICRA, 66.7% had written a manuscript (p<0.001), 51.3% had submitted a manuscript for internal review (p<0.001) and 38.5% were published (p=0.064). Before SICRA, only 37.2% had submitted a grant proposal, 24.4% had won a grant and 43.6% had participated in grant writing teams. After SICRA, 64.1% had submitted a grant proposal (p<0.001), 42.3% had received funding (p=0.011), and 62.8% were participating in grant writing teams (p=0.02). Conclusions: SICRA improved ECS scientific and grant writing which led to increased research output. The 3-day training approach is appropriate for Uganda and similar LMICs.

The principles of programming language design for learning and teaching have been described and discussed for several decades. Most influential was the work of Niklaus Wirth, describing principles such as simplicity, modularity, orthogonality, and readability. So why is this still an area of fundamental disagreement among educators? Why can teachers still not agree on suitable languages for novice programming? Why do we not have a programming language that is designed for education and in widespread use across the world? This paper enumerates and describes educational language design principles in the context of current systems and technologies and discusses why interpretation of these principles shifts as our discipline progresses. We evaluate what these principles mean in our current world, and why a common agreement has not developed. We discuss the relative benefits of pedagogical languages vs. industry languages and articulate why every generation of learners needs their own language.

This autoethnographic paper is part of a special issue trying to answer the question "How to design or choose languages for programming novices?" I will describe how my programming language Hedy was created, how the initial design goals were formed, how my perspectives on learning and teaching changed along the way, and how Hedy changed with it. The paper also discusses how the Hedy community came to be. Hedy was initially made for my own classroom and teaching, but quickly attracted a community, which I learned a lot from. This special issue has given me a unique opportunity, after 5 years of working on Hedy, to reflect on the process and to learn from it myself, and will hopefully also allow other programming language designers to learn from.

The purpose of this research was to explore the strategies effective in building community networks and pooling the resources necessary for laying the foundation to develop a successful county 4-H Extension program in early careers of Extension agents. We conducted this three-round Delphi study with a panel of specially selected 24 successful 4-H Extension agents. The Delphi research process led to identify seven strategies effective in building community networks and six strategies effective in building the necessary resources for the development of an effective county 4-H Extension program. We made practical recommendations based on these findings.

There is limited understanding regarding the willingness to write (WtW) and experiences of EFL university student-writers, particularly in the context of a developing academic genre. To fill this gap, this current research undertook a comprehensive exploration of university student-writers' WtW across various proficiency levels and explored their academic writing through a convergent mixed-method case study. Fifty-three university student-writers were engaged in the research, participating in the simultaneous completion of an L2 WtW questionnaire and open-ended questions designed to gauge their willingness to write. The findings unveiled noteworthy insights. Concerning the tenets of L2 WtW, cognition emerged as the most prominent factor, whereas the role of technology received the lowest score. Both groups of participants exhibited a willingness to write L2 texts, with levels ranging from approximately 43.75% to 59.5%. Novice student-writers expressed a perception that producing an academic article was more demanding. Concurrently, both groups acknowledged linguistic and writing aspects as the primary constraints, while novice student-writers were more prone to experiencing psychological and affective hindrances. The adoption of cognitive strategies was predominant among advanced student-writers, while their novice counterparts leaned more toward utilizing social strategies. When presented with the prospect of voluntarily composing academic articles in the future, a divergence in responses emerged. Approximately half of the novice student-writers (51.4%) conveyed reluctance to partake in this writing endeavor in the future. Conversely, a substantial majority of advanced student-writers (93.8%) conveyed their willingness to write.

This study addresses the scarcity of research examining technology's impact on learners of English as a foreign language in English for specific purposes (ESP) courses within English-medium instruction (EMI) programs. Focusing on a business communication course using a social question-answering platform, this study explores the interplay among English proficiency, motivational orientations, and online engagement. Surveying 126 university students via a mixed-method approach, this research identifies distinct motivational orientations (intrinsic, extrinsic, and self-efficacy) existing during class activities, influenced by proficiency levels, with notable differences in online participation between beginner and advanced learners. The findings suggest that while online activities enhance peer interaction and teacher feedback, they may trigger anxiety in beginners, potentially diminishing motivation and self-efficacy. These results emphasize the need to tailor technology integration to proficiency levels and motivational orientations in ESP/EMI settings. Practical recommendations are offered for educators aiming to implement effective online activities and provide targeted support, particularly for beginner learners, thereby bolstering their motivation and self-efficacy.

In 2017 Purdue evGrand Prix hired a K-12 Indiana public educator (the author) to write instructional material that could be implemented into participating teams' high school science and engineering classrooms. The goal was to create science-based integrated STEM learning experiences that complement the construction and racing of a 48-volt electric go-kart. Over the next four years, the instructional designer learned how to implement instructional design techniques and theories while navigating the changing dynamics of a fledgling educational program. Personal experience with woodworking, classroom instruction, and classroom curriculum development played a huge role in instructional design decisions. Early decision-making processes were rooted in making slight modifications to existing educational resources. Here, minor edits were made for application to motorsports generally, and go-kart racing specifically. When specific go-kart educational materials were not available, educational and classroom best practices became the raw material for creating new and innovative instructional material. Collaboration with peers, professionals, and subject matter experts became the norm, while feedback from participating schools helped develop a single-minded focus to meet both teacher and student needs. Formalized training within an instructional design and technology course provided much-needed organizational and methodological skills associated with the transition from a teacher designing classroom resources to an instructional design professional.

Teacher assessment identity (TAI) is an integral element of quality assessment practice and professionalism, which has been widely overlooked in teacher education research. To bridge this gap, the present study explored the dynamism of TAI through an explicit training course. To do so, 22 novice and experienced Iranian EFL teachers completed a questionnaire on TAI before and after the course. Then both novice and experienced teachers attended a 16-hour treatment in which various assessment dimensions were taught. The participants also completed tasks reflecting TAI components. Moreover, five novice and five experienced EFL teachers were interviewed. The results of the independent samples t-test indicated that novice and experienced Iranian EFL teachers did not significantly differ regarding their assessment identity before and after the treatment despite improvements in their mean scores. However, the results of paired samples t-test revealed that the formal intervention has developed the TAI of both novice and experienced groups. This was substantiated by qualitative findings which demonstrated that, owing to the training, novice teachers manifested TAI in 16 domains while experienced teachers showed their identity as assessors in five domains. The study offers promising implications for EFL teachers and trainers, who can realize the dynamism of TAI and its core dimensions in light of instruction.

This study aimed to demonstrate sustainable education practices in the field of amateur guitar education during the COVID-19 pandemic, emphasizing that all lessons were conducted entirely online. The goal of the study was to enhance economic, social, and environmental performance through a comprehensive approach that assessed the effectiveness of activity-based lesson plans focused on scale, chord, and arpeggio instruction. The lesson plans were designed to include introduction, development, and evaluation sections. The instructional intervention involved five beginner-level students over an eight-week period, with performance data evaluated by three expert evaluators using a 5-point Likert scale. The evaluation allocated 40% weight to theoretical knowledge test results and 60% to performance test outcomes, with student achievement scores ranging from 89.2 to 98.8. The success of the study highlights the potential for sustainable education practices in challenging times like the COVID-19 pandemic and serves as a model for others to follow.

The purpose of this study was to explore how novice online K-12 teachers in Arizona described the influence of organizational, interpersonal, and intrapersonal leader support on their psychological needs. To address the study purpose the author used qualitative descriptive design; using questionnaires and semi-structured interviews, the study sample included 39 novice K-12 online teachers in Arizona. The author used Support for Teachers' Psychological Needs (STPN) as the theoretical framework. Using Reflexive Thematic Analysis (RTA), nine themes emerged from the data that provide insight into specific leader supports in the K-12 online setting. Many organizational, interpersonal, and intrapersonal supports mimic brick-and-mortar findings. However, new supports were uncovered such as, teacher-to-student organizational supports and online communication best-practices. Recommendations included three practical ways that K-12 online leaders can increase competence, autonomy, and relatedness among their staff. This research adds to the existing body of work surrounding supports for teachers' psychological needs by expanding its focus to the online K-12 setting. Additionally, this research was unique for its focus on novice teachers as defined by having less than 4 years of experience in the K-12 online setting.

The person, environment, and therapist (PET) Principle is an innovative teaching strategy designed to improve recall of foundational information, facilitate critical thinking, and improve self-efficacy of student and novice therapists. Specifically, the PET Principle is a microlearning strategy that helps students and novice therapists break down segments of a treatment session using an acronym to promote a "just-intime" thinking process. Therefore, they learn to consider all aspects of the person, environment, and therapist before, during, and after therapy sessions. To evaluate the effectiveness of the PET Principle and self-efficacy after learning the PET Principle, an 11-item survey containing nine forced-choice and two free-response questions was disseminated to students and recent graduates of the program. The research team used simultaneous coding of qualitative responses to identify common themes. Of the 49 completed surveys, the majority of respondents felt the PET Principle strategy was quite effective (43%) or extremely effective (26%) in helping them navigate treatment sessions, and felt somewhat confident (47%) or quite confident (36%) regarding their ability to access their knowledge and manage complicated treatment sessions. The majority also reported using the PET Principle every session or day (78%). Most free-response statements indicated respondents used the PET Principle to ensure safety awareness (49%) or effectiveness and efficiency of treatment (41%); 13% reported using the PET Principle for critical thinking and accessing knowledge. Educators should consider using the PET Principle as a teaching strategy to improve information recall and self-efficacy of students and facilitate critical thinking while navigating simulated and real-life situations.

This study aimed to explore the influence of case-based learning (CBL) on the clinical reasoning of new graduate occupational therapists. A quasi-experimental single-arm study with a convergent mixed methods approach was conducted. The intervention was the 10-week CBL program, which included (1) guidance and mentorship in clinical practice and (2) case reports and presentations. Quantitative data collection consisted of the self-assessment of clinical reasoning in occupational therapy (SA-CROT) and the professional identity scale (PI scale); paired t-tests were conducted (p <0.05). The qualitative data collection was through a questionnaire with one open-ended question and reflexive thematic analysis was performed. The quantitative analysis results indicated that the CBL program improved the total score of the SA-CROT (p = 0.001, effect size r = 0.65), and all four of the SA-CROT's subfactors indicated improvement with moderate to large changes. In addition, the PI scale's two subfactors improved. Qualitative analysis revealed that the CBL program was an experience of "learning multidimensional thought processes" and "learning skills to improve clinical reasoning themselves" for participants. This study's results provide information on the positive influence of CBL on the clinical reasoning of new graduate occupational therapists and highlight the integration of the CBL program into continuing education, the importance of supervisors' guidance and mentorship, and learners' reflection and verbalization of clinical practice.

Early-career secondary school music teachers navigate many challenges as they settle into the profession. These include consolidating their knowledge of subject content, gaining classroom confidence and honing skills in classroom management. In addition, their sense of belonging can be enhanced by working at collegial relationships within their faculty, across the school and feeling a part of the wider school community. These factors can elicit a 'make or break' response for continuing in the profession. This paper reports on a case study of an Australian early-career secondary school music teacher, in her fifth year in the profession. The case study, as a part of a larger study, sequenced quantitative and qualitative research methods, allowing insight into the music teacher's working life and enabled the researcher to understand factors that impact daily practice. Themes explored in the study include motivation, perception of value, stress and the difficulties of securing permanent employment. The music teacher presented a positive approach to her work through her development of resilience and shared her future goals and dreams. This research offers suggestions on how schools and education authorities can best support early-career secondary school music teachers to enable them to become resilient, confident and valued practitioners for the future.

Recent studies have proposed that the automatic activation of naïve concepts, which persist even after learning scientific concepts, must be inhibited to successfully output scientific concepts. This model assumes that individual differences in inhibitory control (IC) within executive functions represent differences in conceptual change. However, the reported correlations between concept conflict and IC tasks are weak, casting doubt on this assumption. This study improves on previous methodologies by focusing on the performance of adult subjects in living and nonliving concept tasks presumed to have successfully achieved conceptual change and quantifying semantic-level IC through the Stroop interference effect. The results revealed that the correlations between the Stroop interference effect and reaction time (RT) differences between conditions of the concept conflict task, which are assumed to represent the time required to inhibit naïve concepts, were relatively stronger compared with findings reported in previous studies. These findings suggest that individual differences in fluent inhibition of naïve concepts after acquiring scientific concepts align with those in IC, thereby supporting the validity of the inhibition model of naïve concepts.

This cross-sectional mixed methods study investigates how intense and authentic communication shapes learners' enjoyment (FLE), anxiety (FLCA), and boredom (FLCB) in class. Participants were 181 beginning English foreign language learners aged 11 in three secondary schools in France. Statistical analyses revealed that pupils in classes with a special focus on intense and authentic communication experienced significantly more FLE and less FLCA and FLCB than their peers in standard classes. Structural equation modelling revealed that intense and authentic communication had the strongest (positive) effect on FLE, followed by negative effects on FLCB and FLCA. FLE was found to be negatively correlated with FLCA and FLCB, while FLCA and FLCB were positively correlated. An axiological analysis of the qualitative data showed that pupils in intense, authentic communication classes reported more FLE, less FLCB, and equal FLCA compared with peers in the standard teaching classes. Pedagogical implications are presented.

The "Developing Indigenous Early Career Researchers Project" is a three-year longitudinal study funded by the Australian Research Council that ran from January 2020 to December 2022. Its main focus was to investigate the experiences and perspectives of Indigenous Early Career Researchers working in universities across Australia. This article presents four main attributes identified by Indigenous Early Career Researchers as necessary to creating culturally safe spaces in Australian universities. These attributes include, safe to: (a) be Indigenous; (b) seek advice and make mistakes; (c) speak openly; and (d) trust. The successful implementation of these attributes requires institutional support and commitment in the form of relevant higher education policies and practices. Importantly, an overarching perspective of this article is that effective implementation of culturally safe spaces for Indigenous Early Career Researchers requires a significant shift in institutional discourse from the inclusion of Indigenous Peoples and Knowledges to recognising Indigenous Peoples as sovereign.

Background: As the significance of artificial intelligence (AI) continues to increase, there is a need for effective scaffolding and support for novice learners. Educators have encountered challenges in effectively scaffolding novice learners AI concepts, and providing appropriate motivational support. Research evidence has shown the potential of game-based approaches to fostering secondary school students' AI literacy and motivation to learn AI. Objectives: This study developed an online platform TreasureIsland to gamify ebooks and investigated whether and how students playing with it can effectively enhance their AI literacy. This study aims to contribute an empirical and theoretical basis for AI literacy education and promote the use of gamification that would be broadly applied in other schools. Methods: A quasi-experiment was conducted to evaluate the effects of the proposed gamified approach, which included a control group using an ebook with playful resources. To triangulate the quantitative results obtained from the pre and post-test, focus group interviews were also conducted. Results: The platform was effective in improving students' motivation, self-efficacy, career interest, and understanding of AI concepts and ethics, but did not enhance their confidence of using AI, and high cognition of applying, evaluating and creating AI. TreasureIsland players demonstrated significant improvement in all affective and cognitive domains, except for the ability to apply, evaluate, and create AI. Interviews revealed that the gamified approach could promote students' AI literacy by adhering to guidelines, including (1) creating a competitive and motivating learning environment through game mechanics, (2) providing scaffolding modules and feedback, and (3) visualising complex AI concepts via simulations. Feedback collected from the study suggested adding pedagogical elements such as flipped classrooms and project-based learning in future research to improve the instructional design, and enable students to reach a higher level of cognition. Conclusions: This study concludes that the use of gamification can provide affective and cognitive support and an enjoyable experience for fostering learners' AI literacy. It helps instructional designers and teachers enrich the pedagogical knowledge related to gamified platform and AI literacy.

Nonverbal behavior can impact language proficiency scores in speaking tests, but there is little empirical information of the size or consistency of its effects or whether language proficiency may be a moderating variable. In this study, 100 novice raters watched and scored 30 recordings of test takers taking an international, high stakes proficiency test. The speech samples were each 2 minutes long and ranged in proficiency levels. The raters scored each sample on fluency, vocabulary, grammar, and comprehensibility using 7-point semantic differential scales. Nonverbal behavior was extracted using an automated machine learning software called iMotions, and data was analyzed with ordinal mixed effects regression. Results showed that attentional variance predicted fluency, vocabulary, and grammar scores, but only when accounting for proficiency. Higher standard deviations of attention corresponded with lower scores for the lower-proficiency group, but not the mid/higher-proficiency group. Comprehensibility scores were only predicted by mean valence when proficiency was an interaction term. Higher mean valence, or positive emotional behavior, corresponded with higher scores in the lower-proficiency group, but not the mid/higher-proficiency group. Effect sizes for these predictors were quite small, with small amounts of variance explained. These results have implications for construct representation and test fairness.

Research is about an individual's intellectual acumen and rationality, and inter-researcher collaboration capability magnifies the outcomes. Despite common belief, there exist fundamental asymmetries in the goals, orientations and expectations among the research collaborators. Seldom studied in-depth and empirically validated, the challenges and barriers faced by early-career researchers (ECRs) in social sciences are crucial to understand. In this study, we aim to identify, categorize and rank the order of priority of the research collaboration barriers and their sub-barriers. This analysis highlights which barrier is likely to impact the research collaboration outcome more as compared to other barriers, as seen through the pairwise comparison. We contribute to the literature on research collaborations by providing a much-needed assessment of the barriers faced by ECRs in social sciences to develop a nuanced understanding of the dynamics within collaboration research. Key barriers identified and explored in this research relate to research design, interpersonal and interprofessional relationships, team-level dynamics, spatial and temporal factors, cultural differences and institutional variables. The fuzzy AHP tool was used to prioritize and rank the barriers, check the consistency ratio and then perform the sensitivity analysis. Research design barriers emerged as the most challenging barrier to research collaborations, implying researchers place huge emphasis on the compatibility of research goals, objectives, paradigms and perspectives. The study provides insights for individuals/institutions leading and managing research collaborations into improving the collaborative dynamics in social sciences.

Background: Sketching exists in many disciplines and varies in how it is assessed, making it challenging to define fundamental sketching skills and the characteristics of a high-quality sketch. For instructors to apply effective strategies for teaching and assessing engineering sketching, a clear summary of the constructs, metrics, and objectives for sketching assessment across engineering education and related disciplines is needed. Purpose: This systematic literature review explores sketching assessment definitions and approaches across engineering education research. Methodology/Approach: We collected 671 papers from five major engineering and education databases at all skill levels for reported sketching constructs and metrics, cognition, and learning contexts. Based on the selection criteria, we eliminated all but 41 papers, on which we performed content analysis. Findings/Conclusions: Engineering, design, and art emerged as three major disciplines in the papers reviewed. We found that sketching assessment most often employs metrics on accuracy, perspective, line quality, annotations, and aesthetics. Most collected studies examined beginners in undergraduate engineering design sketching or drawing ability tests. Cognitive skills included perceiving the sketch subject, creatively sketching ideas, using metacognition to monitor the sketching process, and using sketching for communication. Implications: Sketching assessment varies by engineering discipline and relies on many types of feedback and scoring metrics. Cognitive theory can inform instructional activities as a foundation for sketching skills. There is a need for robust evidence of high-quality assessment practices in sketching instruction. Assessment experts can apply their knowledge toward improving sketching assessment development, implementation, and validation.

More research related to effective ways to support and retain teachers in the teaching profession is necessary as the need for science and mathematics teachers continues to grow. Understanding how teachers perceive challenges and experience support early in their career can contribute to building environments which foster teacher retention. This mixed-method study explored the influences on the self-efficacy and career satisfaction of a group of 21 early-career (2-6 years of classroom experience) secondary science and mathematics teachers who participated in a traditional university preparation program and scholarship program to prepare them for teaching in high-need school districts. Using data from an efficacy survey and semistructured interviews, this study measured changes in teacher efficacy and described teacher leadership experiences, perceived teaching challenges, and valued supports. Results found no change in teachers' self-efficacy scores although mean outcome expectancy scores decreased. Teachers' identification as a teacher leader was correlated with science or mathematics teaching self-efficacy. Qualitative coding of the interviews revealed ways in which assessments, workload, school structures and polices, administration, students, and teacher community either contributed to teachers reported difficulties or supported them as early-career teachers. The discussion offers suggestions for ways to increase secondary science and mathematics teachers' job satisfaction.

Case-based learning (CBL) is a student-centered pedagogy where medical students are given a real-world clinical problem. At St George's University of London (SGUL), anatomy academics can volunteer to facilitate CBL sessions for pre-clinical undergraduate medical students. The major benefits of facilitating CBL sessions from the perspective of a non-medically qualified early career anatomy academic (ECAA) include exposure to clinical cases that help the academic develop an understanding over key clinical cases at the context of clinical anatomy and other disciplines including physiology, pathology, and pharmacology. Furthermore, facilitating CBL sessions assists in the acquisition of basic knowledge over history taking, the conduction of clinical examinations, the investigations performed for the diagnosis of a condition as well as how it is managed. The major benefits of facilitating CBL sessions from the perspective of a medically qualified ECAA include staying in touch with the clinical aspect of medicine and becoming familiar with the country's healthcare system and its professional standards. Perceived benefits shared by both the non-medically and medically qualified ECAA include the opportunity to become familiar with the structure and key elements of the pre-clinical medical curriculum as well as gain experience in facilitating small group teaching sessions. Overall, facilitating CBL sessions can help non-medically and medically qualified ECAAs in different contexts that may help them with their individual career goals, can encourage collaborative discussions between clinical and non-clinical anatomy academics as well as help bridge the gap between the anatomy teaching approaches employed by non-medically qualified and medically qualified anatomy academics.

Experts perceive and evaluate domain-specific visual information with high accuracy. In doing so, they exhibit eye movements referred to as "expert gaze" to rapidly focus on task-relevant areas. Using eye tracking, it is possible to record these implicit gaze patterns and present them to histology novice learners during training. This article presents a comprehensive evaluation of such "expert gaze cueing" on pattern recognition of medical students in histology. For this purpose, 53 students were randomized into two groups over eight histology sessions. The control group was presented with an instructional histology video featuring voice commentary. The gaze cueing group was presented the same video, but with an additional overlay of a live recording of the expert's eye movements. Afterward, students' pattern recognition was assessed through 20 image-based tasks (5 retention, 15 transfer) and their cognitive load with the Paas scale. Results showed that gaze cueing significantly outperformed the control group (p = 0.007; d = 0.40). This effect was evident for both, retention (p = 0.003) and transfer tasks (p = 0.046), and generalized across different histological contexts. The cognitive load was similar in both groups. In conclusion, gaze cueing helps histology novice learners to develop their pattern recognition skills, offering a promising method for histology education. Histology educators could benefit from this instructional strategy to provide new forms of attentional guidance to learners in visually complex learning environments.

Augmented Reality (AR) is believed a suitable teaching method for beginning-level Chinese as a Foreign Language (CFL) learners in learning Chinese characters, as the effects of AR on visualization may enhance recognition of pictographic characters and the integration of multimedia may facilitate comprehension of this logographic language. Yet the multimodal presentation may trigger different reactions in learners with distinct learning preference, including visual, aural, reading/writing, and kinesthetic (VARK) sensory modalities. This exploratory study aimed to investigate the effects and impacts of learning Chinese characters using AR application on beginning-level CFL learners, and took the impact of learning styles into consideration. Twenty-eight beginning-level Chinese as a foreign language (CFL) learner participated in the study, learning 24 Chinese characters with an AR application that demonstrated animated evolutionary processes. A Chinese character recognition test was implemented to evaluate the learning effects in terms of meaning identification and pinyin transliteration before and after the AR intervention. A VARK questionnaire was used to assess their preferred learning styles, and to cross-examine with the learning effects. The results showed significant improvements in the posttest, in particular the identification of character meanings. However, no significant difference was found in the test scores of the four modes of the VARK learning styles, though the learners with multimodal preferences that included the visual learning style had better scores.

Orientation training plays a crucial role in the process of newcomer socialization by equipping employees with the knowledge, abilities, and skills necessary for success in a new work setting. However, relatively few studies have investigated orientation training from a socialization perspective and addressed its underlying mechanisms. To address this issue, we developed a model to elucidate the socialization process of newly hired salespersons undergoing skill-based orientation training. The model includes training reactions, two learning outcomes (learning engagement and skill acquisition), as well as two distal socialization outcomes (retention status and annual sales performance). Using a one-year multiperiod design, we conducted a multilevel analysis on data of 1184 new salesperson records nested in 37 off-site classes, which was obtained from a US pharmaceutical company operating in China. The results revealed that newcomers' reactions to orientation training were positively associated with their learning engagement and skill acquisition, which in turn resulted in a higher newcomer retention ratio. Furthermore, skill acquisition was found to be a significant mediator between training reactions and newcomers' annual sales performance. By combining self-report, trainer-report and objective indicators, this study provides a new and compelling evidence on how orientation training accelerates newcomer socialization success.

We examined how a group of Chinese undergraduate students understood paraphrasing and source use conventions for research paper writing in English. Prior scholarship has generated valuable insights about novice second language (L2) writers' unconventional source use practices, but little is known about how these writers interpret and understand source use expectations for English academic writing. We followed a group of nine Chinese undergraduate students for an academic term as they learned to paraphrase and write with sources for their research paper assignments. Drafts of students' papers were collected and rounds of text-based interviews were conducted where students were asked to explain their source use decisions. Findings showed that the students actively and constantly referenced their source use knowledge of Chinese essay writing to help make sense of source use expectations for English academic writing, although their understanding of English academic source use as well as their rendition of culture may likely be viewed by expert academic writers as 'insufficient' or 'inadequate'. We conclude by highlighting the importance of foregrounding learner voice and acknowledging the legitimacy of the interpretations of novice L2 writers as intercultural informants in the teaching of English academic source use.

Hour of Code is a widely recognized global event that aims to introduce programming to novice users and integrate computer science into education. This paper presents an analysis of the effectiveness of the support system and user interface of Minecraft Adventurer, a serious game designed for the Hour of Code global event. Although previous studies have primarily focused on the educational benefits of Hour of Code games, there has been limited research on their support methods. Therefore, this paper aims to address this gap with an empirical study of the experience of 104 students who played the game for one hour. Student progress was tracked by an administering teacher and after the game session, a questionnaire was administered to collect data on the participant's perceptions of the support system, interface efficiency, and overall experience with Hour of Code. The results of the study reveal significant problems with the aforementioned systems, which apply not only to Minecraft Adventurer but also to several other similar serious games. Additionally, the findings showed a correlation between the utilization of the support system and student performance, indicating that student's comprehension of the support system significantly influences their learning outcomes. This paper concludes by providing potential solutions to address the identified insufficiencies, offering valuable insights for future researchers and game developers on the design and evaluation of serious games for educational purposes.

Context: Low salary is a frequently cited reason for attrition from the athletic training profession. Researchers have determined that athletic trainers (ATs) entering the first hiring process, usually newly credentialed graduates of professional athletic training programs (ATPs), are the least likely to negotiate, resulting in lowered earning potential across their careers. It is necessary to instruct athletic training students on the importance of salary negotiation before the completion of their professional preparation. Objective: Describe a lecture-based approach to include salary negotiation content into ATPs. Background: Employing constructivist learning theory, didactic lecture content with applicable strategies for salary negotiation is sufficient for students to understand which strategies can be used to negotiate for a higher salary during the hiring process. Description: Before the didactic experience, second-year graduate ATP students self-assessed their knowledge of, familiarity with, and comfort in negotiating during the hiring process. A single 3-hour lecture on negotiation was provided to students that included reasons to negotiate, financial ramifications of not negotiating, strategies for determining appropriate salaries, example language to use, and a discussion of timing to initiate negotiations. Students reassessed their knowledge, familiarity, and comfort within 1 week of receiving the didactic content. Six months after ATP completion, students reported whether they negotiated during their first hiring process. Educational Advantages: Although not required for professional ATPs, the inclusion of content specific to salary negotiation in the hiring process increases future ATs' understanding of negotiation processes and their comfort level in initiating negotiations earlier in their career. Conclusion: Students' understanding of negotiation during the hiring process and comfort with attempting negotiation increased following the lecture-based technique. If ATs can achieve higher earnings earlier in their career, they can increase their lifetime earning potential, and they may find the profession to be more financially sustainable, thus decreasing professional attrition.
