A detailed analysis of the N(1s) and C(1s) X-Ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) is made, where the measured XPS is compared with theoretical Sudden Approximation (SA) intensities and theoretical XPS Binding Energies (BEs). There is remarkably good agreement between the theoretical predictions and the measured XPS; in particular, the different full width at half maximum values for the C(1s) and N(1s) BEs are explained in terms of unresolved C(1s) BEs for the different C atoms in pyridine. This work demonstrates that the combination of theory and XPS measurements can extract analysis of the XPS relevant to the molecular electronic structure. Molybdenum sulfide serves as an effective nonprecious metal catalyst for hydrogen evolution, primarily active at edge sites with unsaturated molybdenum sites or terminal disulfides. To improve the activity at a low loading density, two molybdenum sulfide clusters, [Mo 3 S 4 ] 4+ and [Mo 3 S 13 ] 2- , were investigated. The Mo 3 S x molecular catalysts were heterogenized on Sb 2 Se 3 with a simple soaking treatment, resulting in a thin catalyst layer of only a few nanometers that gave up to 20 mA cm -2 under one sun illumination. Both [Mo 3 S 4 ] 4+ and [Mo 3 S 13 ] 2- exhibit catalytic activities on Sb 2 Se 3 , with [Mo 3 S 13 ] 2- emerging as the superior catalyst, demonstrating enhanced photovoltage and an average faradaic efficiency of 100% for hydrogen evolution. Plasmonic systems convert light into electrical charges and heat, mediating catalytic transformations. However, there is ongoing controversy regarding the involvement of hot carriers in the catalytic process. In this study, we demonstrate the direct utilisation of plasmon hot electrons in the hydrogen evolution reaction with visible light. We intentionally assemble a plasmonic nanohybrid system comprising NiO/Au/[Co(1,10-Phenanthrolin-5-amine) 2 (H 2 O) 2 ], which is unstable at water thermolysis temperatures. This assembly limits the plasmon thermal contribution while ensuring that hot carriers are the primary contributors to the catalytic process. By combining photoelectrocatalysis with advanced in situ spectroscopies, we can substantiate a reaction mechanism in which plasmon-induced hot electrons play a crucial role. These plasmonic hot electrons are directed into phenanthroline ligands, facilitating the rapid, concerted proton-electron transfer steps essential for hydrogen generation. Stable single metal adatoms on oxide surfaces are of great interest for future applications in the field of catalysis. We studied iridium single atoms (Ir 1 ) supported on a Fe 3 O 4 (001) single crystal, a model system previously only studied in ultra-high vacuum, to explore their behavior upon exposure to several gases in the millibar range (up to 20 mbar) utilizing ambient-pressure X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The Ir 1 single adatoms appear stable upon exposure to a variety of common gases at room temperature, including oxygen (O 2 ), hydrogen (H 2 ), nitrogen (N 2 ), carbon monoxide (CO), argon (Ar), and water vapor. Changes in the Ir 4f binding energy suggest that Ir 1 interacts not only with adsorbed and dissociated molecules but also with water/OH groups and adventitious carbon species deposited inevitably under these pressure conditions. At higher temperatures (473 K), iridium adatom encapsulation takes place in an oxidizing environment (a partial O 2 pressure of 0.1 mbar). We attribute this phenomenon to magnetite growth caused by the enhanced diffusion of iron cations near the surface. Carboxylic acids bind to titanium dioxide (TiO 2 ) dissociatively, forming surface superstructures that give rise to a (2 × 1) pattern detected by low-energy electron diffraction. Exposing this system to water, however, leads to a loss of the highly ordered surface structure. The formate-covered surface was investigated by a combination of diffraction and spectroscopy techniques, together with static and dynamic ab initio simulations, with the conclusion that a dynamic equilibrium exists between adsorbed formic acid and water molecules. This equilibrium process is an important factor for obtaining a better understanding of controlling the self-cleaning properties of TiO 2 , because the formic acid monolayer is responsible for the amphiphilic character of the surface.

The aim of this study was to assess preoperative airway history data and single anthropometric screening tests of difficult face mask ventilation (FMV) and difficult direct laryngoscopy intubation (DLI) in otorhinolaryngological surgery. Final analysis included 62 patients aged ≥14 years undergoing elective surgery with endotracheal intubation at a single center during a one-month period. Data on difficult intubation history, airway symptoms and pathology related to difficult airway were prospectively collected. Han scoring classification of FMV and Intubation Difficulty Score (IDS) were used. There were 14 (22.6%) patients with a history of current airway tumors or abscesses. Only two (3.2%) patients were preoperatively evaluated as anticipated difficult airway. Both were slightly difficult to ventilate and scored IDS 5 and IDS 8. FMV was graded as easy in 50 (80.5%), slightly difficult in 10 (16.1%) and difficult in 2 (3.2%) cases. There were 29 (46.78%) slightly difficult DLIs and one (1.6%) case of difficult DLI. The study confirmed clinically relevant incidence of difficulties with FMV and DLI in otorhinolaryngologic surgery patients. Antimony selenide (Sb 2 Se 3 ) is an auspicious material for solar energy conversion that has seen rapid improvement over the past ten years, but the photovoltage deficit remains a challenge. Here, simple and low-temperature treatments of the p-n heterojunction interface of Sb 2 Se 3 /TiO 2 -based photocathodes for photoelectrochemical water splitting were explored to address this challenge. The FTO/Ti/Au/Sb 2 Se 3 (substrate configuration) stack was treated with (NH 4 ) 2 S as an etching solution, followed by CuCl 2 treatment prior to deposition of the TiO 2 by atomic layer deposition. The different treatments show different mechanisms of action compared to similar reported treatments of the back Au/Sb 2 Se 3 interface in superstrate configuration solar cells. These treatments collectively increased the onset potential from 0.14 V to 0.28 V vs. reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE) and the photocurrent from 13 mA cm -2 to 18 mA cm -2 at 0 V vs. RHE as compared to the untreated Sb 2 Se 3 films. From SEM and XPS studies, it is clear that the etching treatment induces a morphological change and removes the surface Sb 2 O 3 layer, which eliminates the Fermi-level pinning that the oxide layer generates. CuCl 2 further enhances the performance due to the passivation of the surface defects, as supported by density functional theory molecular dynamics (DFT-MD) calculations, improving charge separation at the interface. Background: Most patients with epithelial ovarian cancer (EOC) relapse despite primary debulking surgery and chemotherapy (CT). Autologous dendritic cell immunotherapy (DCVAC) can present tumor antigens to elicit a durable immune response. We hypothesized that adding parallel or sequential DCVAC to CT stimulates antitumor immunity and improves clinical outcomes in patients with EOC. Based on the interim results of sequential DCVAC/OvCa administration and to accommodate the increased interest in maintenance treatment in EOC, the trial was amended by adding Part 2., Methods: Patients with International Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics stage III EOC (serous, endometrioid, or mucinous), who underwent cytoreductive surgery up to 3 weeks prior to randomization and were scheduled for first-line platinum-based CT were eligible. Patients, stratified by tumor residuum (0 or <1 cm), were randomized (1:1:1) to DCVAC/OvCa parallel to CT (Group A), DCVAC/OvCa sequential to CT (Group B), or CT alone (Group C) in Part 1, and to Groups B and C in Part 2. Autologous dendritic cells for DCVAC were differentiated from patients' CD14 + monocytes, pulsed with two allogenic OvCa cell lines (SK-OV-3, OV-90), and matured in the presence of polyinosinic:polycytidylic acid. We report the safety outcomes (safety analysis set, Parts 1 and 2 combined) along with the primary (progression-free survival (PFS)) and secondary (overall survival (OS)) efficacy endpoints. Efficacy endpoints were assessed in the modified intention-to-treat (mITT) analysis set in Part 1., Results: Between November 2013 and March 2016, 99 patients were randomized. The mITT (Part 1) comprised 31, 29, and 30 patients in Groups A, B, and C, respectively. Baseline characteristics and DCVAC/OvCa exposure were comparable across the treatment arms. DCVAC/OvCa showed a good safety profile with treatment-emergent adverse events related to DCVAC/OvCa in 2 of 34 patients (5.9%) in Group A and 2 of 53 patients (3.8%) in Group B. Median PFS was 20.3, not reached, and 21.4 months in Groups A, B, and C, respectively. The HR (95% CI) for Group A versus Group C was 0.98 (0.48 to 2.00; p=0.9483) and the HR for Group B versus Group C was 0.39 (0.16 to 0.96; p=0.0336). This was accompanied by a non-significant trend of improved OS in Groups A and B. Median OS was not reached in any group after a median follow-up of 66 months (34% of events)., Conclusions: DCVAC/OvCa and leukapheresis was not associated with significant safety concerns in this trial. Cuprous oxide ([Formula: see text]) is a promising material for photoelectrochemical energy conversion due to its small direct band gap, high absorbance, and its Earth-abundant constituents. High conversion efficiencies require transport of photoexcited charges to the interface without energy loss. We studied the electron dynamics in [Formula: see text](111) by time-resolved two-photon photoemission for different surface defect densities in order to elucidate the influence on charge carrier transport. On the pristine bulk terminated surface, the principal conduction bands could be resolved, and ultrafast, elastic transport of electrons to the surface was observed. On a reconstructed surface the carrier transport is strongly suppressed and defect states dominate the spectra. Evidence for surface oxygen vacancies acting as efficient carrier traps is provided, what is important for further engineering of [Formula: see text] based photoelectrodes.

Background/aim: To compare the diagnostic reliability, accuracy and safety of ultrasound-guided biopsy (Tru-Cut biopsy) and ascites puncture in patients with a primarily inoperable malignant ovarian tumor., Patients and Methods: This is a retrospective analysis of the studied methods in consecutively examined patients and a prospective validation of these methods. 79 women with a suspected primarily inoperable ovarian tumor underwent Tru-Cut biopsies and were included in the ultrasound-guided biopsy group. In addition, 55 patients after ascites puncture were enrolled in the comparison group. Both procedures were performed in 48 patients for the prospective validation., Results: Significant differences in favour of ultrasound-guided biopsy were found in all studied variables (malignancy confirmation 72.9% vs. 95.8%, tumor origin 52.1% vs. 89.6%, histologic subtype 43.8% vs. 85.4% and accuracy, i.e. agreement of preoperative and definitive diagnosis 43.7% vs. 95.4%)., Conclusion: Ultrasound-guided biopsy is an accurate, reliable, safe and minimally invasive method. Using time-lapsed ambient-pressure X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, we investigate the thermal oxidation of single-crystalline Ir(100) films toward rutile IrO 2 (110) in situ. We initially observe the formation of a carbon-free surface covered with a complete monolayer of oxygen, based on the binding energies of the Ir 4f and O 1s core level peaks. During a rather long induction period with nearly constant oxygen coverage, the work function of the surface changes continuously as sensed by the gas phase O 1s signal. The sudden and rapid formation of the IrO 2 rutile phase with a thickness above 3 nm, manifested by distinct binding energy changes and substantiated by quantitative XPS analysis, provides direct evidence that the oxide film is formed via an autocatalytic growth mechanism that was previously proposed for PbO and RuO 2 .

A new endstation to perform operando chemical analysis at solid-liquid interfaces by means of ambient pressure x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (APXPS) is presented. The endstation is located at the Swiss Light Source and can be attached to the soft x-ray in situ spectroscopy beamline (X07DB) for solid-gas type experiments and to a tender x-ray beamline (PHOENIX I) for solid-liquid interface experiments. The setup consists of three interconnected ultrahigh vacuum chambers: one for sample preparation using surface science techniques, the analysis chamber for APXPS experiments, and an entry-lock chamber for sample transfer across the two pressure regimes. The APXPS chamber is designed to study solid-liquid interfaces stabilized by the dip and pull method. Using a three-electrode setup, the potential difference across the solid-electrolyte interface can be controlled, as is demonstrated here using an Ir(001) electrode dipped and pulled from a 0.1M KOH electrolyte. The new endstation is successfully commissioned and will offer unique opportunities for fundamental studies of phenomena that take place at solid-liquid interfaces and that are relevant for fields such as electrochemistry, photochemistry, or biochemistry, to name a few.

While loading of cocatalysts is one of the most widely investigated strategies to promote the efficiency of photoelectrodes, the understanding of their functionality remains controversial. We established new hybrid molecular photoanodes with cobalt-based molecular cubane cocatalysts on hematite as a model system. Photoelectrochemical and rate law analyses revealed an interesting functionality transition of the {Co(II) 4 O 4 }-type cocatalysts. Their role changed from predominant hole reservoirs to catalytic centers upon modulation of the applied bias. Kinetic analysis of the photoelectrochemical processes indicated that this observed transition arises from the dynamic equilibria of photogenerated surface charge carriers. Most importantly, we confirmed this functional transition of the cocatalysts and the related kinetic properties for several cobalt-based molecular and heterogeneous catalysts, indicating wide applicability of the derived trends. Additionally, complementary analytical characterizations show that a transformation of the applied molecular species occurs at higher applied bias, pointing to a dynamic interplay connecting molecular and heterogeneous catalysis. Our insights promote the essential understanding of efficient (molecular) cocatalyzed photoelectrode systems to design tailor-made hybrid devices for a wide range of catalytic applications.

Instability of ultrathin surface oxides on alloys under environmental conditions can limit the opportunities for applications of these systems when the thickness control of the insulating oxide film is crucial for device performance. A procedure is developed to directly deposit self-assembled monolayers (SAM) from solvent onto substrates prepared under ultra-high vacuum conditions without exposure to air. As an example, rhenium photosensitizers functionalized with carboxyl linker groups are attached to ultrathin alumina grown on NiAl(1 1 0). The thickness change of the oxide layer during the SAM deposition is quantified by x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and can be drastically reduced to one atomic layer. The SAM acts as a capping layer, stabilizing the oxide thin film under environmental conditions. Ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy elucidates the band alignment in the resulting heterostructure. The method for molecule attachment presented in this manuscript can be extended to a broad class of molecules vulnerable to pyrolysis upon evaporation and presents an elegant method for attaching molecular layers on solid substrates that are sensitive to air.

Graphene oxides are promising materials for novel electronic devices or anchoring of the active sites for catalytic applications. Here we focus on understanding the atomic oxygen (AO) binding and mobility on different regions of graphene (Gr) on Ru(0001). Differences in the Gr/Ru lattices result in the superstructure, which offers an array of distinct adsorption sites. We employ scanning tunneling microscopy and density functional theory to map out the chemical identity and stability of prepared AO functionalities in different Gr regions. The AO diffusion is utilized to establish that in the regions that are close to the metal substrate the terminally bonded enolate groups are strongly preferred over bridge-bonded epoxy groups. No oxygen species are observed on the graphene regions that are far from the underlying Ru, indicating their low relative stability. This study provides a clear fundamental basis for understanding the local structural, electronic factors and C-Ru bond strengthening/weakening processes that affect the stability of enolate and epoxy species.

Titanium dioxide/graphene composites have recently been demonstrated to improve the photocatalytic activity of TiO 2 in visible light. To better understand the interactions of TiO 2 with graphene we have investigated the growth of TiO 2 nanoclusters on single-layer graphene/Ru(0001) using scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and Auger electron spectroscopy (AES). Deposition of Ti in the O 2 background at 300 K resulted in the formation of nanoclusters nucleating on intrinsic defects in the graphene (Gr) layer. The saturation nanocluster density decreased as the substrate temperature was increased from 300 to 650 K, while deposition at 700 K resulted in the significant etching of the Gr layer. We have also prepared nanoclusters with Ti 2 O 3 stoichiometry using lower O 2 pressures at 650 K. Thermal stability of the TiO 2 nanoclusters prepared at 300 K was evaluated with AES and STM. No change in oxidation state for the TiO 2 nanoclusters or etching of the Gr layer was observed up to ∼900 K. Annealing studies revealed that cluster ripening proceeds via a Smoluchowski mechanism below 800 K. Above 800 K, the changes in cluster shapes indicate an onset of diffusion within the clusters. At even higher temperatures, the nanoclusters undergo reduction to TiO x (x ≈ 1-1.5) which is accompanied by oxidation and etching of the Gr. Our studies demonstrate that highly thermally stable TiO x nanoclusters of controlled composition and morphology can be prepared on Gr supports.

The interaction of CO with the Fe 3 O 4 (001)-(√2 × √2)R45° surface was studied using temperature-programmed desorption (TPD), scanning tunneling microscopy (STM), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), the latter both under ultrahigh vacuum (UHV) conditions and in CO pressures up to 1 mbar. In general, the CO-Fe 3 O 4 interaction is found to be weak. The strongest adsorption occurs at surface defects, leading to small TPD peaks at 115, 130, and 190 K. Desorption from the regular surface occurs in two distinct regimes. For coverages up to two CO molecules per (√2 × √2)R45° unit cell, the desorption maximum shows a large shift with increasing coverage, from initially 105 to 70 K. For coverages between 2 and 4 molecules per (√2 × √2)R45° unit cell, a much sharper desorption feature emerges at ∼65 K. Thermodynamic analysis of the TPD data suggests a phase transition from a dilute 2D gas into an ordered overlayer with CO molecules bound to surface Fe 3+ sites. XPS data acquired at 45 K in UHV are consistent with physisorption. Some carbon-containing species are observed in the near-ambient-pressure XPS experiments at room temperature but are attributed to contamination and/or reaction with CO with water from the residual gas. No evidence was found for surface reduction or carburization by CO molecules.

Aim: To analyze the utility of HE4 assessment in preoperative management of patients with early-stage endometrial cancer for stratification into low-risk and high-risk groups., Patients and Methods: The following data were prospectively collected from patients operated for endometrial cancer from 05/2012 till 9/2016; age, HE4, CA125, expert ultrasound examination of the pelvis, histotype, grade, FIGO stage., Results: In total, 124 patients were enrolled. A cut-off of ≥113 pmol/l HE4 demonstrated 40.3% sensitivity and 83.9% specificity for detection of high-risk patients. Correlations of HE4 with age (p<0.001), depth of myometrial invasion (p=0.001), clinical stage of the disease according to ultrasound - T1a vs. T1b (63.6 pmol/l vs. 110.6 pmol/l, p<0.001) were found. However, no correlation of HE4 with lymph node invasion (p=0.07) and tumor grade (p=0.212) was identified., Conclusion: HE4 levels correspond to clinical and FIGO stage of the disease. The sensitivity and specificity does not reach the transvaginal ultrasound results in preoperative assessment of the extent of the disease. Combination of HE4 with ultrasound does not improve the stratification of patients into low-risk and high-risk groups. Cerium oxide is an important catalytic material known for its ability to store and release oxygen, and as such, it has been used in a range of applications, both as an active catalyst and as a catalyst support. Using scanning tunneling microscopy and Auger electron spectroscopy, we investigated oxygen interactions with CeOx nanoclusters on a complete graphene monolayer-covered Ru(0001) surface at elevated temperatures (600-725 K). Under oxidizing conditions (PO2 = 1 × 10(-7) Torr), oxygen intercalation under the graphene layer is observed. Time dependent studies demonstrate that the intercalation proceeds via spillover of oxygen from CeOx nanoclusters through the graphene (Gr) layer onto the Ru(0001) substrate and extends until the Gr layer is completely intercalated. Atomically resolved images further show that oxygen forms a p(2 × 1) structure underneath the Gr monolayer. Temperature dependent studies yield an apparent kinetic barrier for the intercalation of 1.21 eV. This value correlates well with the theoretically determined value for the reduction of small CeO2 clusters reported previously. At higher temperatures, the intercalation is followed by a slower etching of the intercalated graphene (apparent barrier of 1.60 eV). Vacuum annealing of the intercalated Gr leads to the formation of carbon monoxide, causing etching of the graphene film, demonstrating that the spillover of oxygen is not reversible. In agreement with previous studies, no intercalation is observed on a complete graphene monolayer without CeOx clusters, even in the presence of a large number of point defects. These studies demonstrate that the easily reducible CeOx clusters act as intercalation gateways capable of efficiently delivering oxygen underneath the graphene layer.

The atomic-scale mechanisms underlying the growth of Ag on the (√2×√2)R45°-Fe3O4(001) surface were studied using scanning tunneling microscopy and density functional theory based calculations. For coverages up to 0.5 ML, Ag adatoms populate the surface exclusively; agglomeration into nanoparticles occurs only with the lifting of the reconstruction at 720 K. Above 0.5 ML, Ag clusters nucleate spontaneously and grow at the expense of the surrounding material with mild annealing. This unusual behavior results from a kinetic barrier associated with the (√2×√2)R45° reconstruction, which prevents adatoms from transitioning to the thermodynamically favorable 3D phase. The barrier is identified as the large separation between stable adsorption sites, which prevents homogeneous cluster nucleation and the instability of the Ag dimer against decay to two adatoms. Since the system is dominated by kinetics as long as the (√2×√2)R45° reconstruction exists, the growth is not well described by the traditional growth modes. It can be understood, however, as the result of supersaturation within an adsorption template system.

A combination of photoemission, atomic force, and scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy measurements shows that excess electrons in the TiO2 anatase (101) surface are trapped at step edges. Consequently, steps act as preferred adsorption sites for O2 . In density functional theory calculations electrons localize at clean step edges, this tendency is enhanced by O vacancies and hydroxylation. Aim: The aim of the present study was to compare the use of cancer antigen 125 (CA125) and human epididymis protein 4 (HE4) biomarkers in patients with endometrial cancer for preoperative management and to particularly focus on relationship between CA125 and HE4 and disease stage in predicting myometrial invasion or intrauterine tumor spread., Patients and Methods: Thirty-four patients diagnosed with endometrial cancer and 32 healthy controls were enrolled into the pilot study in the period between May 2012 and March 2013. Blood from all the females was collected and examined for CA125 and HE4. Based on standardized ultrasound examination, including gynecological examination, the clinical disease stage was determined., Results: We found a significant difference (p<0.0001) for means of serum levels of HE4: females with endometrial cancer, 75.5 pmol/l, versus healthy females, 40.0 pmol/l. A non-significant statistical difference was found for mean serum CA125 levels (p=0.4442): females with endometrial cancer 19.0 IU/l, versus healthy females, 15 IU/l. A significant correlation with histopathological disease stage was found for both biomarkers (Spearman correlation). Sensitivity and specificity, and the related cut-off for HE4 suggest that HE4 would be a more appropriate biomarker for differential diagnosis between benign and malignant states., Conclusion: Based on our pilot study, we found that parallel examination of HE4 and CA125 may support endometrial ultrasound finding verification prior to biopsy. This study is ongoing and we expect that results on a larger population may enable HE4 measurement to be implemented in routine practice.
