Abstract

New integrability properties of a family of sequences of ordinary differential equations, which contains the Riccati and Abel chains as the most simple sequences, are studied. The determination of n generalized symmetries of the nth-order equation in each chain provides, without any kind of integration, n-1 functionally independent first integrals of the equation. A remaining first integral arises by a quadrature by using a Jacobi last multiplier that is expressed in terms of the preceding equation in the corresponding sequence. The complete set of n first integrals is used to obtain the exact general solution of the nth-order equation of each sequence. The results are applied to derive directly the exact general solution of any equation in the Riccati and Abel chains., Comment: 16 pages

Abstract

Nineteen classical superintegrable systems in two-dimensional non-Euclidean spaces are shown to possess hidden symmetries leading to their linearization. They are the two Perlick systems [A. Ballesteros, A. Enciso, F.J. Herranz and O. Ragnisco, Class. Quantum Grav. 25, 165005 (2008)], the Taub-NUT system [A. Ballesteros, A. Enciso, F.J. Herranz, O. Ragnisco, and D. Riglioni, SIGMA 7, 048 (2011)], and all the seventeen superintegrable systems for the four types of Darboux spaces as determined in [E.G. Kalnins, J.M. Kress, W. Miller, P. Winternitz, J. Math. Phys. 44, 5811--5848 (2003)].

Abstract

The classical quantization of the motion of a free particle and that of an harmonic oscillator on a double cone are achieved by a quantization scheme [M.C. Nucci, Theor. Math. Phys. 168 (2011) 994], that preserves the Noether point symmetries of the underlying Lagrangian in order to construct the Schroedinger equation. The result is different from that given in [K. Kowalski, J.Rembielnski, Ann. Phys. 329 (2013) 146]. Abstract

Slow neutron captures are responsible for the production of about $50\%$ of elements heavier than iron, mainly, occurring during the asymptotic giant branch phase of low-mass stars ($1$ $\lesssim M$/M$_{\odot}$ $\lesssim$ $3$), where the main neutron source is the $^{13}$C($\alpha$,n)$^{16}$O reaction. This last is activated from locally-produced $^{13}$C, formed by partial mixing of hydrogen into the He-rich layers. We present here the first attempt at describing a physical mechanism for the formation of the $^{13}$C reservoir, studying the mass circulation induced by magnetic buoyancy and without adding new free parameters to those already involved in stellar modelling. Our approach represents the application, to the stellar layers relevant for $s$-processing, of recent exact, analytical 2D and 3D models for magneto-hydrodynamic processes at the base of convective envelopes in evolved stars in order to promote downflows of envelope material for mass conservation, during the occurrence of a dredge-up phenomenon. We find that the proton penetration is characterized by small concentrations, but extended over a large fractional mass of the He-layers, thus producing $^{13}$C reservoirs of several $10^{-3}$ M$_{\odot}$. The ensuing $^{13}$C-enriched zone has an almost flat profile, while only a limited production of $^{14}$N occurs. In order to verify the effects of our new findings we show how the abundances of the main $s$-component nuclei can be accounted for in solar proportions and how our large $^{13}$C-reservoir allows us to solve a few so far unexplained features in the abundance distribution of post-AGB objects.

Abstract

The advection of thermonuclear ashes by magnetized domains emerging from near the H-shell was suggested to explain AGB star abundances. Here we verify this idea quantitatively through exact MHD models. Starting with a simple 2D geometry and in an inertia frame, we study plasma equilibria avoiding the complications of numerical simulations. We show that, below the convective envelope of an AGB star, variable magnetic fields induce a natural expansion, permitted by the almost ideal MHD conditions, in which the radial velocity grows as the second power of the radius. We then study the convective envelope, where the complexity of macro-turbulence allows only for a schematic analytical treatment. Here the radial velocity depends on the square root of the radius. We then verify the robustness of our results with 3D calculations for the velocity, showing that, for both the studied regions, the solution previously found can be seen as a planar section of a more complex behavior, in which anyway the average radial velocity retains the same dependency on radius found in 2D. As a final check, we compare our results to approximate descriptions of buoyant magnetic structures. For realistic boundary conditions the envelope crossing times are sufficient to disperse in the huge convective zone any material transported, suggesting magnetic advection as a promising mechanism for deep mixing. The mixing velocities are smaller than for convection, but larger than for diffusion and adequate to extra-mixing in red giants.

Abstract

Background: The COVID-19 pandemic heightened risks for individuals with hematological malignancies due to compromised immune systems, leading to more severe outcomes and increased mortality. While interventions like vaccines, targeted antivirals, and monoclonal antibodies have been effective for the general population, their benefits for these patients may not be as pronounced. Methods: The EPICOVIDEHA registry (National Clinical Trials Identifier, NCT04733729) gathers COVID-19 data from hematological malignancy patients since the pandemic's start worldwide. It spans various global locations, allowing comprehensive analysis over the first three years (2020–2022). Findings: The EPICOVIDEHA registry collected data from January 2020 to December 2022, involving 8767 COVID-19 cases in hematological malignancy patients from 152 centers across 41 countries, with 42% being female. Over this period, there was a significant reduction in critical infections and an overall decrease in mortality from 29% to 4%. However, hospitalization, particularly in the ICU, remained associated with higher mortality rates. Factors contributing to increased mortality included age, multiple comorbidities, active malignancy at COVID-19 onset, pulmonary symptoms, and hospitalization. On the positive side, vaccination with one to two doses or three or more doses, as well as encountering COVID-19 in 2022, were associated with improved survival. Interpretation: Patients with hematological malignancies still face elevated risks, despite reductions in critical infections and overall mortality rates over time. Hospitalization, especially in ICUs, remains a significant concern. The study underscores the importance of vaccination and the timing of COVID-19 exposure in 2022 for enhanced survival in this patient group. Abstract

Patients affected by multiple myeloma (MM) have an increased risk of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus type 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection and subsequent coronavirus (20)19 disease (COVID-19)-related death. The changing epidemiological and therapeutic scenarios suggest that there has been an improvement in severity and survival of COVID-19 during the different waves of the pandemic in the general population, but this has not been investigated yet in MM patients. Here we analyzed a large cohort of 1221 patients with MM and confirmed SARS-CoV-2 infection observed between February 2020, and August 2022, in the EPICOVIDEHA registry from 132 centers around the world. Median follow-up was 52 days for the entire cohort and 83 days for survivors. Three-hundred and three patients died (24%) and COVID-19 was the primary reason for death of around 89% of them. Overall survival (OS) was significantly higher in vaccinated patients with both stable and active MM versus unvaccinated, while only a trend favoring vaccinated patients was observed in subjects with responsive MM. Vaccinated patients with at least 2 doses showed a better OS than those with one or no vaccine dose. Overall, according to pandemic waves, mortality rate decreased over time from 34% to 10%. In multivariable analysis, age, renal failure, active disease, hospital, and intensive care unit admission, were independently associated with a higher number of deaths, while a neutrophil count above 0.5 × 109/L was found to be protective. This data suggests that MM patients remain at risk of SARS-CoV-2 infection even in the vaccination era, but their clinical outcome, in terms of OS, has progressively improved throughout the different viral phases of the pandemic.

Abstract

Since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, there has been an overall improvement in patient mortality. However, haematological malignancy patients continue to experience significant impacts from COVID-19, including high rates of hospitalization, intensive care unit (ICU) admissions, and mortality. In comparison to other haematological malignancy patients, individuals with chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) generally have better prognosis. This study, conducted using a large haematological malignancy patient database (EPICOVIDEHA), demonstrated that the majority of CML patients experienced mild infections. The decline in severe and critical infections over the years can largely be attributed to the widespread administration of vaccinations and the positive response they elicited. Notably, the mortality rate among CML patients was low and exhibited a downward trend in subsequent years. Importantly, our analysis provided confirmation of the effectiveness of vaccinations in CML patients.

We present an old and regretfully forgotten method by Jacobi which allows one to find many Lagrangians of simple classical models and also of nonconservative systems. We underline that the knowledge of Lie symmetries generates Jacobi last multipliers and each of the latter yields a Lagrangian. Then it is shown that Noether's theorem can identify among those Lagrangians the physical Lagrangian(s) that will successfully lead to quantization. The preservation of the Noether symmetries as Lie symmetries of the corresponding Schr\"odinger equation is the key that takes classical mechanics into quantum mechanics. We show that a method presented in [S.L. Trubatch and A. Franco, Canonical Procedures for Population Dynamics, J. Theor. Biol. 48 (1974), 299-324] and later in [G.H. Paine, The development of Lagrangians for biological models, Bull. Math. Biol. 44 (1982) 749-760] for finding Lagrangians of classic models in biology, is actually based on finding the Jacobi Last Multiplier of such models. Using known properties of Jacobi Last Multiplier we show how to obtain linear Lagrangians of those first-order systems and nonlinear Lagrangian of the corresponding single second-order equations that can be derived from them, even in the case where those authors failed such as the host-parasite model.

A procedure which obviates the constraint imposed by the conflict between consistent quantization and the invariance of the Hamiltonian description under nonlinear canonical transformation is proposed. This new quantization scheme preserves the Noether point symmetries of the underlying Lagrangian in order to construct the Schr\"odinger's equation. As an example, the quantization of the `goldfish' many-body problem extensively studied by Calogero et al. is presented.

Mathematical modeling should present a consistent description of physical phenomena. We illustrate an inconsistency with two Hamiltonians -- the standard Hamiltonian and an example found in Goldstein -- for the simple harmonic oscillator and its quantisation. 20. An algebraic approach to laying a ghost to rest

In the recent literature there has been a resurgence of interest in the fourth-order field-theoretic model of Pais-Uhlenbeck \cite {Pais-Uhlenbeck 50 a}, which has not had a good reception over the last half century due to the existence of {\em ghosts} in the properties of the quantum mechanical solution. Bender and Mannheim \cite{Bender 08 a} were successful in persuading the corresponding quantum operator to `give up the ghost'. Their success had the advantage of making the model of Pais-Uhlenbeck acceptable to the physical community and in the process added further credit to the cause of advancement of the use of ${\cal PT} $ symmetry. We present a case for the acceptance of the Pais-Uhlenbeck model in the context of Dirac's theory by providing an Hamiltonian which is not quantum mechanically haunted. The essential point is the manner in which a fourth-order equation is rendered into a system of second-order equations. We show by means of the method of reduction of order \cite {Nucci} that it is possible to construct an Hamiltonian which gives rise to a satisfactory quantal description without having to abandon Dirac., Comment: 8 pages

We show that given an ordinary differential equation of order four, it may be possible to determine a Lagrangian if the third derivative is absent (or eliminated) from the equation. This represents a subcase of Fels'conditions [M. E. Fels, The inverse problem of the calculus of variations for scalar fourth-order ordinary differential equations, Trans. Amer. Math. Soc. 348 (1996) 5007-5029] which ensure the existence and uniqueness of the Lagrangian in the case of a fourth-order equation. The key is the Jacobi last multiplier as in the case of a second-order equation. Two equations from a Number Theory paper by Hall, one of second and one of fourth order, will be used to exemplify the method. The known link between Jacobi last multiplier and Lie symmetries is also exploited. The last multiplier of Jacobi provides a route for the determination of families of Lagrangians for a given system. We show that the members of a family are equivalent in that they differ by a total time derivative. We derive the Schr\"odinger equation for a one-degree-of-freedom system with a constant multiplier. In the sequel we consider the particular example of the simple harmonic oscillator. In the case of the general equation for the simple harmonic oscillator which contains an arbitrary function we show that all Schr\"odinger equations possess the same number of Lie point symmetries with the same algebra. Abstract

We investigate the symmetry properties of a pair of Ermakov equations. The system is superintegrable and yet possesses only three Lie point symmetries with the algebra sl(2,R). The number of point symmetries is insufficient and the algebra unsuitable for the complete specification of the system. We use the method of reduction of order to reduce the nonlinear fourth-order system to a third-order system comprising a linear second-order equation and a conservation law. We obtain the representation of the complete symmetry group from this system. Four of the required symmetries are nonlocal and the algebra is the direct sum of a one-dimensional Abelian algebra with the semidirect sum of a two-dimensional solvable algebra with a two-dimensional Abelian algebra. The problem illustrates the difficulties which can arise in very elementary systems. A transformation is derived which takes Lorenz integrable system into the well-known Euler equations of a free-torque rigid body with a fixed point, i.e. the famous motion \`a la Poinsot. The proof is based on Lie group analysis applied to two third order ordinary differential equations admitting the same two-dimensional Lie symmetry algebra. Lie's classification of two-dimensional symmetry algebra in the plane is used. If the same transformation is applied to Lorenz system with any value of parameters, then one obtains Euler equations of a rigid body with a fixed point subjected to a torsion depending on time and angular velocity. The numerical solution of this system yields a three-dimensional picture which looks like a "tornado" whose cross-section has a butterfly-shape. The technique of reduction of order developed by Nucci ({\it J Math Phys} {\bf 37} (1996) 1772-1775) is used to produce nonlocal symmetries additional to those reported by Krause ({\it J Math Phys} {\bf 35} (1994) 5734-5748) in his study of the complete symmetry group of the Kepler Problem. The technique is shown to be applicable to related problems containing a drag term which have been used to model the motion of low altitude satellites in the Earth's atmosphere and further generalisations. A consequence of the application of this technique is the demonstration of the group theoretical relationship between the simple harmonic oscillator and the Kepler and related problems.

Abstract

In (Nucci M.C. 1994, Physica D 78 p.124), we have found that iterations of the nonclassical symmetries method give rise to new nonlinear equations, which inherit the Lie point symmetry algebra of the given equation. In the present paper, we show that special solutions of the right-order heir-equation correspond to classical and nonclassical symmetries of the original equations. An infinite number of nonlinear equations which possess nonclassical symmetries are derived.

Item does not contain fulltext, BACKGROUND: The outcome of COVID-19 in allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) recipients is almost uniformely considered poor. The aim of present study was to retrospectively analyse the outcome and risk factors for mortality in a large series of patients who developed COVID-19 infection after an allogeneic HSCT. METHODS: This multicenter retrospective study promoted by the European Hematology Association - Infections in Hematology Study Working Group, included 326 adult HSCT patients who had COVID-19 between January 2020 and March 2022. RESULTS: The median time from HSCT to the diagnosis of COVID-19 was 268 days (IQR 86-713; range 0-185 days). COVID-19 severity was mild in 21% of the patients, severe in 39% and critical in 16% of the patients. In multivariable analysis factors associated with a higher risk of mortality were, age above 50 years, presence of 3 or more comorbidities, active hematologic disease at time of COVID-19 infection, development of COVID-19 within 12 months of HSCT, and severe/critical infections. Overall mortality rate was 21% (n=68): COVID-19 was the main or secondary cause of death in 16% of the patients (n=53). CONCLUSIONS: Mortality in HSCT recipients who develop COVID-19 is high and largely dependent on age, comorbidities, active hematologic disease, timing from transplant and severity of the infection.

Abstract

Background: Nirmatrelvir/ritonavir treatment decreases the hospitalisation rate in immunocompetent patients with COVID-19, but data on efficacy in patients with haematological malignancy are scarce. Here, we describe the outcome of nirmatrelvir/ritonavir treatment in a large cohort of the latter patients. Methods: This is a retrospective cohort study from the multicentre EPICOVIDEHA registry (NCT04733729) on patients with haematological malignancy, who were diagnosed with COVID-19 between January and September 2022. Patients receiving nirmatrelvir/ritonavir were compared to those who did not. A logistic regression was run to determine factors associated with nirmatrelvir/ritonavir administration in our sample. Mortality between treatment groups was assessed with Kaplan–Meier survival plots after matching all the patients with a propensity score. Additionally, a Cox regression was modelled to detect factors associated with mortality in patients receiving nirmatrelvir/ritonavir. Findings: A total of 1859 patients were analysed, 117 (6%) were treated with nirmatrelvir/ritonavir, 1742 (94%) were treated otherwise. Of 117 patients receiving nirmatrelvir/ritonavir, 80% had received ≥1 anti-SARS-CoV-2 vaccine dose before COVID-19 onset, 13% of which received a 2nd vaccine booster. 5% were admitted to ICU. Nirmatrelvir/ritonavir treatment was associated with the presence of extrapulmonary symptoms at COVID-19 onset, for example anosmia, fever, rhinitis, or sinusitis (aOR 2.509, 95%CI 1.448–4.347) and 2nd vaccine booster (aOR 3.624, 95%CI 1.619–8.109). Chronic pulmonary disease (aOR 0.261, 95%CI 0.093–0.732) and obesity (aOR 0.105, 95%CI 0.014–0.776) were not associated with nirmatrelvir/ritonavir use. After propensity score matching, day-30 mortality rate in patients treated with nirmatrelvir/ritonavir was 2%, significantly lower than in patients with SARS-CoV-2 directed treatment other than nirmatrelvir/ritonavir (11%, p = 0.036). Abstract

Objectives: Elderly patients with hematologic malignancies face the highest risk of severe COVID-19 outcomes. The infection's impact on different age groups remains unstudied in detail. Methods: We analyzed elderly patients (age groups: 65-70, 71-75, 76-80, and >80 years old) with hematologic malignancies included in the EPICOVIDEHA registry between January 2020 and July 2022. Univariable and multivariable Cox regression models were conducted to identify factors influencing death in COVID-19 patients with hematological malignancy. Results: The study included data from 3,603 elderly patients (aged 65 or older) with hematological malignancy, with a majority being male (58.1%) and a significant proportion having comorbidities. The patients were divided into four age groups, and the analysis assessed COVID-19 outcomes, vaccination status, and other variables in relation to age and pandemic waves. The 90-day survival rate for patients with COVID-19 was 71.2%, with significant differences between groups. The pandemic waves had varying impacts, with the first wave affecting patients over 80 years old, the second being more severe in 65-70, and the third being the least severe in all age groups. Factors contributing to 90-day mortality included age, comorbidities, lymphopenia, active malignancy, acute leukemia, less than three vaccine doses, severe COVID-19, and using only corticosteroids as treatment. Conclusion: These data underscore the heterogeneity of elderly hematological patients, highlight the different impacts of COVID-19 waves and the pivotal importance of vaccination, and may help in planning future healthcare efforts.
