The purpose of this paper is to determine the provenance and tectonic setting of the Phu Khat Formation and get a better understanding of the tectonic evolution of the Nakhon Thai region using the petrography and whole-rock geochemistry integrated with the U-Pb detrital zircon dating. The sandstone of the Late Cretaceous to Early Tertiary Phu Khat Formation is chiefly characterized by unsorted texture and highly unstable volcanic lithic fragments. The formation overlies unconformably on a high textural and mineral maturity of clastic sandstone of the Late Cretaceous Khao Ya Puk Formation. Geochemically, the tectonic setting discrimination (KO/NaO-SiO, AlO/SiO-FeO+MgO, and Th-Sc-Zr/10) and the petrography indicate that the Phu Khat Formation was accumulated in a passive margin tectonic setting which is the same as the Khao Ya Puk Formation but with a different depositional environment. The plots of geochemical provenance discrimination (La/Th-Hf, Th/Sc-Zr/Sc, Eu anomaly Eu/Eu* 0.42 to 0.74) and the petrography reveal that the provenance of the Khao Ya Puk Formation is mainly recycled sedimentary rocks while the Phu Khat Formation consists primarily of recycled sedimentary rocks associated with minor felsic volcanic rocks from the old continental island arc of the uplifted either western or eastern continental terranes or both. However, the U-Pb detrital zircon dating indicates a unique provenance of the Phu Khat Formation from the terrane west of the Nakhon Thai region where the volcanic continental arc is active predominantly in the Middle to Late Triassic. The results indicate that while the Phu Khat Formation was accumulated in Nakhon Thai region, the western terrane was uplifted by reactivation of the preexisting structure probably since the Maastrichtian time to be the source area of sediments. Meanwhile, the eastern terrane (mainly Loei-Phetchabun fold belt) had not been uplifted probably until, the accumulation of the Phu Khat Formation terminated. The relative roles of tectonics and climate change in global and regional desertification are not well constrained. Previous studies have emphasized the role played by climate change as a dominant cause of southeastern (SE) Asia desertification during the mid-Late Cretaceous. The effect of early uplift of the Tibetan Plateau prior to the collision between Eurasia and India on regional desertification remains poorly understood. We present a comprehensive set of provenance data on two aeolian sequences deposited in the Simao Basin and Khorat Plateau desert environments adjacent to southeast Tibet. Our provenance results suggest that the aeolian sandstones of the Pashahe Formation in the Simao Basin were largely recycled from exposed sedimentary rocks of the Songpan-Garze terrane, Southern Qiangtang terranes, and northern Yangtze Block with minor contributions from the magmatic rocks of the Tengchong and Southern Qiangtang terranes. Combined with other evidence, provenance results indicate the source areas started to grow and to be rapidly unroofed and determined the birth of the transcontinental southerly flowing paleo-river, which carried the sand to be stored. In contrast, the Phu Thok aeolian sandstones in the Khorat Plateau were predominantly sourced from the exposed Sibumasu igneous rocks together with recycled detritus in the Sukhothai Arc terrane, which was possibly transported by a local river. Hence, our thesis is that elevated topography caused by the closure of the Bangong-Nujiang Mesotethys profoundly affected the atmospheric circulation and drainage development, leading to mid-Late Cretaceous desertification across SE Asia. To understand the early topographic growth of the Tibetan Plateau and the causes and effects of climate change in this region, it is important to reconstruct the drainage evolution across Southeast Tibet. Based on age constraints provided by detrital zircons in the fluvial sandstones in the Khorat Plateau Basin, we identified a major Early Cretaceous drainage disruption and reorganization event. The ages and Hf isotope compositions of the detrital zircons in the Upper Jurassic-Lower Cretaceous Phu Kradung to Phu Phan formations (166–122 Ma) suggest the existence of an exorheic continental-scale paleo-Mekong River with headwaters in the Songpan-Garze and Qiangtang terranes. This paleo-river flowed southwards across the Khorat Plateau to what is presently the offshore Phuquoc Basin, which was then part of the Neo-Tethys Ocean. In contrast, the U-Pb-Hf compositions of the detrital zircons in the Lower Cretaceous Khok Kruat Formation (122–113 Ma) indicate that a prominent detrital supply from the Sibumasu magmatic rocks was transported by the paleo-Salween River. This major change reflects the occurrence of ancestral transcontinental river disruption at around 122 Ma, which was driven by the final collision between the Lhasa and Qiangtang and Woyla Arc and Sibumasu terranes. The tectonic uplift and ensuing arid climate corresponded to the reorganization of the ancestral Mekong drainage system during the Mid-Cretaceous (113–94 Ma). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
