This study aims to evaluate land use and land cover (LULC) changes and associated impacts in the landscape structure and ecosystem services (ES) value in Lousã municipality, in Central Portugal. The results show that significant changes in LULC were recorded over the study period (1974–2018). Agricultural abandonment, expansion of woodland due to the promotion of the eucalyptus (EU) monoculture (chiefly Eucalyptus globulus), the invasion of exotic species (mainly Acacia dealbata) and the increase of built-up areas are the most significant changes that have shaped the landscapes of the study area. The analysis also revealed that the mean patch size has decreased whereas the number of patches increased. The results showed that although the EU and deciduous forest (DF) increased the ES value, the overall total ES value fell around 10% between 1974 and 2018, mainly due to the decrease in the supply of agricultural goods. Studies of this kind on local rural landscapes are vital when it comes to devising appropriate land management policies for the landscape level by considering the interaction between each element for sustainable development.

This study set out to assess the ability of year nine students to identify and classify the most likely natural and mixed risks, both on a national scale and within the Metropolitan Area of Porto (AMP). We also sought to assess the respective spatial perception of different risks at regional level. For this purpose, a questionnaire was applied and the results show that the students classified the risk of forest fire as the most likely to occur, both nationwide and in all AMP municipalities, with a rating ranging from high to moderate, respectively. In spatial terms, they clearly define the areas most vulnerable to each of the listed risks, identifying forest fires and heat waves as most likely to occur, and the northern and coastal regions of Portugal where the greatest number of risks are concentrated.

Payments for ecosystem (or environmental) services (PES) encourage land users to manage their land in ways that deliver environmental benefits. This study aimed to assess the water quality in a rural property located in the Protection and Recovery of Watersheds of Campinas, which has been participating in the payment for ecosystem services program since 2018. More specifically, seven points of interest regarding the physicochemical indicators of the water were raised, which were subjected to descriptive statistical and variance analysis. The results revealed significant spatio-temporal variability in the monitored water quality indicators for dissolved oxygen, biochemical oxygen demand, pH, total phosphorus, and total nitrogen. More significant fluctuations were observed in the spatial location of the sampling points for turbidity, temperature, and electrical conductivity. AbstractPerception is very important when analysing and managing risk as it is vital for better preparing the individual and society. The aims of this study are to: (i) find out about students’ perceptions of the spatial dimension of natural and environmental risks affecting mainland Portugal; (ii) understand how students perceive risks, taking causal attribution, level of knowledge, and future trends into account; (iii) relate students’ perceptions to behaviour, actions, and willingness to change attitudes to mitigating and reducing risks. In this study, a questionnaire was administered to 786 ninth year students between April and May 2022. Stepwise regression was applied to determine the factors that control the change in risk behaviour. The results of this study indicate levels of risk perception that are considered low to moderate. Mediterranean forests are very degraded, mainly due to the intensification of wildfires in recent decades, which, boosted by human activity, have contributed to the acceleration of erosion processes and soil degradation. Under certain conditions, this also contributes to the formation of gullies. The aim of this study is to identify and characterise gullies considering their morphological and topographical aspects and determine the factors that control vegetation regrowth in gullies in a Mediterranean environment after a wildfire. The gullies were identified based on the 2018 orthophotograph, after the large wildfire of October 2017 that affected the entire study area. To analyse the vegetation regrowth, we used the normalised difference vegetation index (NDVI) derived from seven Landsat 8 OLI/TIRS images (2017–2022). The Spearman's rho correlation coefficient was selected to estimate the correlation between gully characteristics and vegetation regrowth. Before running the model, a multicollinearity test was conducted (VIF ≤ 10 and tolerance ≥ 0.1). Stepwise multiple regression was conducted in order to identify the independent variable that has a strong relationship with vegetation regrowth. A marginal effects plot was drawn up. The 38 gullies identified are in forest areas, mainly composed of pine (Pinus pinaster) trees (17 gullies) or a combination of pine trees and broadleaf (Eucalyptus globulus) trees (eight gullies). In all, invasive species are present in 11 gullies, alone (one gully), together with pine trees (four gullies) or with other species (six). The other gully has broadleaf trees. The vegetation in the gully channel recovered well in the year after the wildfire. In the following years there was growth at a slower rate until it reached similar values of NDVI in 2022, 5 years after the wildfire. Stepwise multiple regression (SMR) produced a solution with three models. The three derived dimensions covered 66.8% of the variance, considering the mean width, altitude and flow accumulation. The results can help to devise more effective management strategies for areas where the recurrence and intensity of wildfires have contributed very effectively to soil loss and degradation from gully erosion, with a view to a more resilient and sustainable territory. This study aims to assess the perception that 9th year students have about some key concepts related to the "science of risk" and to evaluate their ability to identify and classify the natural and mixed risks with a greater probability of occurrence, both at national level and in the Metropolitan Area of Porto (MAP). A questionnaire was applied to 308 students in the 9th year, before the content was taught in geography classes. The results show that students have major difficulties when assessing concepts (such as susceptibility, vulnerability and disaster) and the causes, consequences and mitigation measures identification were evaluated by them as the most important local/municipal risks. In general, the students rated forest fire as the risk most likely to occur, both nationally and in all the MAP municipalities, with a classification of high (national) and moderate (MAP). At municipal level, however, some differences were highlighted in the ranking for the different types of risk. These results also suggest that risk perception is shaped by informal sources of information such as that provided by mass media, and the proximity to a certain type of risk.

In recent decades, wildfires have become common disasters that threaten people's lives and assets, particularly in wildland–urban interfaces (WUIs). Developing an effective evacuation strategy for a WUI presents challenges to emergency planners because of the spatial variations in biophysical hazards and social vulnerability. The aim of this study was to map priority WUIs in terms of evacuation. The factors considered were the seriousness of the risk of wildfire exposure, and the population centres whose greatest constraints on the evacuation process stemmed from the nature of the exposed population and the time required to travel to the nearest shelter/refuge. An integrated framework linking wildfire hazard, social vulnerability, and the time taken to travel by foot or by car to the nearest refuge/shelter was applied. The study area includes two municipalities (Lousã and Sertã) in the mountainous areas of central Portugal that are in high-wildfire-risk areas and have very vulnerable and scattered pockets of exposed population. The combination of wildfire risk and travelling time to the nearest shelters made it possible to identify 20% of the WUIs that were priority areas for evacuation in the case of Sertã. In the case of Lousã, 3.4% were identified, because they were highly exposed to wildfire risk and had a travelling time to the nearest shelter of more than 15 min on foot. These results can assist in designing effective pre-fire planning, based on fuel management strategies and/or managing an effective and safe evacuation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Forest remnants are hotspots of biodiversity and play an important role in providing services such as regulating the climate, reducing surface runoff, helping erosion control, protecting and contributing to the balance of ecosystems, and other functions. Despite this, natural vegetation is fragmented and limited to a few remnants, which are gradually suffering from anthropogenic pressures. Assessing the environmental quality of these remnants is therefore vital to understanding their current condition and to provide support for their conservation. This study aims to assess the environmental quality of forest remnants in six water basins in the municipality of Campinas/SP, Brazil. Forest remnants were mapped, and their environmental quality was assessed by applying an analytic hierarchy process (AHP), considering a set of structural landscape metrics previously selected from the literature. Of the 2319 forest remnants evaluated, 4.5% and 30%, respectively, registered high and low environmental quality. The Atibaia and Jaguari basins recorded the highest number of environmentally fragile remnants due to their small size and being predominantly elongated, and to the high erodibility of the soil. In the Anhumas, Capivari, Capivari-Mirim, and Quilombo basins, medium-sized forest remnants predominate. There is a greater distance between them, with a high intensity of land use/land cover in their surroundings, related to the prevalence of urbanized areas. In this study the spatial perceptions of students about the likelihood of natural and environmental risks were examined, considering both mainland Portugal and island of Madeira. It intends to understand how students perceived the risks, taking into account the causal attributions, future tendency, and the support from public entities, as well as the willingness of attitudinal changes with respect to mitigating and reducing risks. The results suggest that students have a relatively low perception of analysed risks, considering the risk of forest fires, heatwaves, air and water pollution, and floods the most likely to occur, mainly as a consequence of climate change intensification. Gender proved to be the variable with the greatest influence on perception, particularly in terms of risk occurrence and personal perception of risk. These results could be important for the improvement of strategies and resources to be applied in the educational context in order to reduce disaster risk and strengthen the resilience of the community at large. The assessment of the risk of evacuation in a wildfire scenario can be decisive to save human lives, especially in Wildland-Urban Interface (WUI) areas. This study aims to identify the priority settlements in terms of evacuation and assistance in the municipalities of Lousã and Sertã, through the combination of the susceptibility of wildfires occurrence, resulting from the combination of biophysical variables, and the social vulnerability, directed towards evacuation support, based on socio-demographic variables, at the statistical subsection scale. The results emphasise two municipalities extremely susceptible to the occurrence of forest fires and a wide variation in terms of social vulnerability, directed towards evacuation, based on the different approaches applied. Settlements located in more mountainous areas, surrounded by forested communities of maritime pine or eucalyptus, with high social vulnerability, were classified as priorities for evacuation.
