The objective was to evaluate the effect of the use of a non-forage diet in feeding finished sheep in a feedlot regarding intake, nutrient digestibility, performance, ingestive behavior, and cost analysis with feed. The experiment was performed in a completely randomized complete block, with two treatments and eight blocks per treatment. The treatments were the control diet (30 of hay and 70% of concentrate, dry matter (DM) basis, normally used in the finishing system in Brazil) and the non-forage diet (100% concentrate). Animals fed non-forage diets had lower nutrient intake and metabolizable energy (ME) intake. Even though the animals that received a non-forage diet presented lower intake of DM, organic matter (OM), and crude protein (CP), there was no effect (p < 0.05) for the digestibility coefficients of these variables between diets. The time spent in rumination, total chewing, and idleness also decreased (p < 0.05) when lambs were fed a non-forage diet, due to the decreased DM intake. The profit margin value of US$10.395/animal reached by sheep fed the control diet was higher than the profit margin obtained by sheep that received the non-forage diet (US$−3.974/animal). The non-forage (pelleted) diet led to lower bio-economic performance, and its exclusive use in sheep finishing is not recommended. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In order to assess the effect of dry and wet seasons in the distribution and abundance of macrofauna organisms (Hymenoptera and Coleoptera) and mesofauna (Collembola and Acarina) of the soil in semiarid region were evaluated over a period of twelve months (January to December 2008) in an environment of caatinga, São João do Cariri - PB. The observations were made at four sampling points were fixed. For the macrofauna were Provid traps containing 200 mL| of a detergent solution at a concentration of 5% and 5 drops of Formaldehyde and PA remained in the camp for a period of four days (96 hours). For the mesofauna of the soil samples were collected soil + litter with the use of metal rings (diameter = 4.8 cm and height = 3 cm) to 0-5 cm. The samples were installed in the battery of Berlese-Tullgren extractors modified for the extraction of the constituent peoples of soil mesofauna. Samples were kept in the extractor for 96 hours exposed to light. Once wrapped, the mesofauna has captured the process of identifying and counting, with the aid of binocular lens. The bodies of macro and mesofauna were influenced by the dry and rainy seasons. There was a reduction in the abundance of groups less adapted to the conditions of water scarcity in the dry season., Com o objetivo de avaliar o efeito das estações seca e chuvosa na distribuição e abundância dos organismos da macrofauna (Hymenoptera e Coleoptera) e mesofauna (Acarina e Collembola) do solo em região semiárida, foram realizadas avaliações durante um período de doze meses (janeiro a dezembro de 2008) em áreas de caatinga, no município de São João do Cariri - PB. As observações foram feitas em quatro pontos de coleta fixos. Para a macrofauna foram utilizadas armadilhas Provid contendo 200 mL de uma solução de detergente a uma concentração de 5% e 5 gotas de Formol P.A. onde permaneceram no campo por um período de quatro dias (96 horas). Para a mesofauna do solo foram coletadas amostras de solo + serrapilheira com o emprego de anéis metálicos (diâmetro = 4,8 cm e altura = 3 cm) a 0-5 cm de profundidade. As amostras foram instaladas na bateria de extratores Berlese-Tullgren modificada para a extração das populações constituintes da mesofauna edáfica. As amostras foram mantidas no extrator por 96 horas exposta à luz. Depois de acondicionada, a mesofauna capturada passou pelo processo de identificação e contagem, com o auxílio de lente binocular. Os organismos da macro e mesofauna foram influenciados pelas estações seca e chuvosa. Houve redução na abundância dos grupos menos adaptado as condições de escassez hídrica na estação seca., Con el objetivo de evaluar el efecto de las estaciones seca y chuvosa en la distribución y abundancia de los organismos de la macrofauna (Hymenoptera y Coleoptera) y mesofauna (Acarina y Collembola) del suelo en región semiárida, fueron realizadas evaluaciones durante un periodo de doce meses (enero a diciembre de 2008) en áreas de caatinga, en el municipio de Son João del Cariri - PB. Las observaciones fueron hechas en cuatro puntos de recolecta fijos. Para la macrofauna fueron utilizadas trampas Provid conteniendo 200 ml de una solución de detergente a una concentración del 5% y 5 gotas de Formol P.A. donde permanecieron en el campo por un periodo de cuatro días (96 horas). Para la mesofauna del suelo fueron recolectadas muestras de suelo + serrapilheira con el empleo de anillos metálicos (diâmetro = 4,8 cm y altura = 3 cm) a 0-5 cm de profundidad. Las muestras fueron instaladas en la batiría de extractores Berlese-Tullgren modificada para la extracción de las poblaciones constituintes de la mesofauna edáfica. Las muestras fueron mantenidas en el extractor por 96 horas expuesta a la luz. Tras acondicionada, la mesofauna capturada pasó por el proceso de identificación y cuenta, con el auxílio de lente binocular. Los organismos de la macro y mesofauna fueron influenciados por las estaciones seca y chuvosa. Hube reducción en la abundancia de los grupos menos adaptado las condiciones de escasez hídrica en la estación seca.

Parkia platycephala pods (PP) replacing ground corn. For this, twenty-eight castrated male lambs (18.34 ± 4.81 kg, 120 days of age), were distributed in randomised blocks with 4 treatments and 7 replicates. Four diets were formulated replacing ground corn with PP (0, 33, 66, and 100%) on a roughage: concentrate ratio of 30:70 on a dry matter basis. The feedlot period lasted for 60 days, and the animals were slaughtered consecutively. The replacing of ground corn with PP reduced the intakes of ether extract and metabolisable energy, digestibility of dry matter, organic matter, crude protein, ether extract, neutral detergent fibre, total digestible nutrients, isovalerate, and omental + mesenteric fat, while it increased the digestibility of non-fibrous carbohydrates, carcass finishing, and the yields of rumen, reticulum, and omasum (p < 0.05 ). A quadratic effect was observed for the time of chews per rumen bolus, number of rumination chews per day, number of rumination chews per bolus, and number of rumination chews per minute, propionate (p = 0.002), butyrate (p < 0.01) and total short chain fatty acids (SCFA) (p < 0.05 ) according to the increase in PP levels replacing ground corn in diets offered to lambs. The rumen pH was reduced and the NH3-N increased according to the evaluation period (p < 0.05 ). The highest concentration of total SCFA was observed in the collection carried out at 09 h (p < 0.05 ). The use of up to 100% PP in diets offered to lambs is recommended as it provides nutrient intake, weight gain, and carcass yield similar to ground corn. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]- Published

This study aimed to evaluate whether bacterial inoculation improves the fermentative, microbiological, and chemical characteristics of silages of the elephant grass cv. BRS Capiaçu on different regrowth days. The experimental design was completely randomized and set up in a 3x2 factorial arrangement (three regrowth days, with and without inoculant), with four replications. There was a significant interaction between the regrowth days and inoculant on the pH, ammoniacal nitrogen (N-NH3), and effluent losses (EL) of the silages. Inoculation decreased the EL with the advance of regrowth days and increased the dry matter recovery index compared to the silages without inoculant. The population of molds and yeasts decreased when inoculation was adopted to the forage harvested after 85 d. There was a significant interaction between the dry matter (DM), crude protein (CP) and neutral detergent fiber corrected for ash and protein (NDFap) contents of the silages. Inoculation in the grass harvested after 85 d increased the DM contents of the silage. The highest CP contents were observed in the silages after 85 d. The NDFap contents of the grasses harvested after 110 and 135 d were higher than those of the grass harvested after 85 d. The NDFap contents of the silages without inoculant increased with the harvest age. The BRS Capiaçu forage silage harvested at 110 d demonstrated favorable performance for silage production. However, the influence of inoculant use was low for the characteristics evaluated. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The objective was to evaluate the ingestive behavior of ovine fed Marandu grass silage with dehydrated brewery residue added. The experiment had a completely randomized design with five treatments and four repetitions, with the treatments levels of inclusion being of 0, 10, 20, 30, and 40% natural matter of naturally dehydrated brewery residue for 36 hours to the marandu grass silage. 20 ovines were used and the experimental period was 21 days, 15 being for adaptation to diets. The use of brewery byproduct promoted quadratic effect (P < 0.05) for the consumption of dry matter with maximum point value estimated at adding 23.25% additive. Ingestion efficiency and rumination efficiency of dry matter (g DM/hour) were significant (P < 0.05), by quadratic behavior, and NDF ingestion and rumination efficiency showed crescent linear behavior. The DM and NDF consumption expressed in kg/meal and in minutes/kg were also significant (P < 0.05), showing quadratic behavior. Rumination activity expressed in g DM and NDF/piece was influenced (P < 0.05) by the adding of brewery residue in marandu grass silage in quadratic way, with maximum value estimated of 1.57 g DM/bolus chewed in inclusion of 24.72% additive in grass silage. The conclusion is that intermediary levels adding of 20 to 25% dehydrated brewery residue affects certain parameters of ingestive behavior.
