O Síndrome de necrose das orelhas em suínos (PNES) é uma patologia muito comum na fase de recria da produção intensiva. Apesar de não acarretar grandes prejuízos económicos às explorações, tem de ser vista como um problema de bem-estar animal que requer ação/prevenção. O objetivo principal deste estudo, realizado durante um estágio profissional numa exploração multiplicadora de suínos no concelho de Arouca, foi o de verificar se uma alimentação à base de prebióticos tais como polifenóis, mananoligossacarídeos e ácidos gordos de cadeia média, conseguiria reduzir a incidência de PNES numa exploração com alta prevalência. Neste sentido, foram realizados 2 ensaios, com dois lotes diferentes, onde foram criados dois grupos separados de leitoas: um com alimentação de iniciação normal e outra com uma nutrição à qual foram adicionados os prebióticos anteriormente mencionados. No primeiro ensaio, a relação foi quase significativa (p=0,108) e no segundo, foi definitivamente significativa (p=0,041), ou seja, parte-se do princípio de que estes componentes tiveram um efeito benéfico no sistema imunitário dos leitões. Assim, contrariaram o que se pensa ser uma resposta imunitária habitualmente deficiente e de criação de imunocomplexos nos capilares da ponta das orelhas dos mesmos, que tende a provocar vasculites, tromboses e, posteriormente, necrose dos tecidos. À parte destes resultados, também foram averiguados outras variáveis relacionadas com fatores de risco à PNES, como a genética, a densidade, o peso ao desmame e a temperatura. Foram também isoladas em 6 de 8 amostras de tecido auricular necrótico, bactérias do género Streptococcus sp., microrganismo tido como um dos principais suspeitos na etiologia da PNES. The Porcine Necrotic Ear Syndrome (PNES) is a very common pathology in the rearing phase of intensive swine production. Although it does not cause major economic damage to farms, it has to be seen as an animal welfare problem that requires action/prevention. The main objective of this study, carried out during a professional internship in a swine breeding farm in the municipality of Arouca in Portugal, was to verify whether a diet based on prebiotics such as polyphenols, mannan-oligosaccharides and medium-chain fatty acids could reduce the incidence of PNES in a farm with high prevalence. In this sense, 2 trials were carried out, in different batches, where two separate groups of female piglets were created: one with normal initiation feeding and another with a nutrition to which the previously mentioned prebiotics were added. In the first trial, the relation was almost significant (p=0.108) and in the second, it was definitely significant (p=0.041), meaning that, it is assumed that these components had a beneficial effect on the piglets immune system. Thereby, preventing the which is thought to be a usually deficient immune response and the formation of immunocomplexes in the capillaries at the tip of their ears, which tends to cause vasculitis, thrombosis and later tissue necrosis. Apart from these results, other variables related to risk factors for PNES were also investigated, such as genetics, density, weaning weight and temperature. Bacteria of the genus Streptococcus sp., a microorganism considered to be one of the main suspects in the etiology of PNES, were also isolated in 6 of 8 samples of necrotic ear tissue.

Electroencephalogram microstates are recurrent scalp potential configurations that remain stable for around 90 ms. The dynamics of two of the four canonical classes of microstates, commonly labeled as C and D, have been suggested as a potential endophenotype for schizophrenia. For endophenotypes, unaffected relatives of patients must show abnormalities compared to controls. Here, we examined microstate dynamics in resting-state recordings of unaffected siblings of patients with schizophrenia, patients with schizophrenia, healthy controls, and patients with first episodes of psychosis (FEP). Patients with schizophrenia and their siblings showed increased presence of microstate class C and decreased presence of microstate class D compared to controls. No difference was found between FEP and chronic patients. Our findings suggest that the dynamics of microstate classes C and D are a candidate endophenotype for schizophrenia., EEG microstate abnormalities have been reported in patients with schizophrenia. Here the authors demonstrate that patients and their siblings show similar microstate abnormalities compared to healthy controls.

Trabalho de Projeto do Mestrado Integrado em Engenharia Física apresentado à Faculdade de Ciências e Tecnologia Nos últimos anos, em particular com o desenvolvimento da pandemia COVID-19, temos observado uma transformação digital continua dos cuidados de saúde. Uma tecnologia em específico destaca-se, revelando grande potencial para revolucionar o paradigma atual dos cuidados de saúde – a Internet das Coisas (IoT). O trabalho desta dissertação consiste no desenvolvimento de uma infrastrutura IoT que interliga sensores inteligentes vestíveis a um sistema de informação de saúde utilizado por inúmeros hospitais nacionais. Em particular, é efetuada uma avaliação de diferentes placas de hardware IoT comuns para determinar que placa será utilizada para a infraestrutura de aquisição de dados, além de uma análise extensiva da comunicação Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) para avaliar os dispositivos utilizados para efetuar a comunicação BLE. No âmbito deste trabalho foi também proposta uma especificação para comunicação Message Queuing Telemetry Transport (MQTT), tal como o desenvolvimento de uma Interface de Programação de Aplicações (API) usando o protocolo Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources (FHIR), que é um dos protocolos mais utilizados para a transmissão de informação de saúde no ambiente de software clínico, para integrar a infraestrutura no sistema de informação de saúde, juntamente com uma arquitetura de serviços para o servidor edge, desenhado com segurança e privacidade em mente. A plataforma desenvolvida é validada através de um ensaio em instalações hospitalares e testes em ambiente controlado, nos quais a infraestrutura mostrou uso eficiente de recursos, disponibilidade máxima e boa segurança, fornecendo uma base sólida para continuar o desenvolvimento e expandir as funcionalidades existentes do sistema. In the past years, especially with the COVID-19 pandemic, we have observed the continuous digital transformation of healthcare. But there is one technology in particular shows potential to revolutionize the current healthcare paradigm – the Internet of Things (IoT). This work focuses on the development of a secure Internet of Things infrastructure which connects wireless, wearable, and intelligent sensors to a health information system used by multiple national hospitals. In particular, an extensive benchmarking of common IoT hardware platforms to serve as IoT acquisition nodes is performed, and an analysis of Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) communication protocol to evaluate the adequacy of the devices used to implement it. Additionally, a specification for Message Queuing Telemetry Transport (MQTT) communication is also proposed, as well as the development of a Application Programming Interface (API) using Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources (FHIR), an open standard widely used in health informatics for exchanging electronic health records, to integrate the IoT infrastructure with the health information system, coupled with an efficient service architecture for the edge server, designed with security and privacy in mind. The work is validated both through trials within hospital facilities and controlled laboratory tests, in which the infrastructure shows efficient resource usage, maximum availability and security, providing solid foundations for future work to build upon.

Dissertação de mestrado integrado em Informatics Engineering, Universally, it is known that data is constantly changing, new concepts emerge and ways to represent them, and sometimes many of these concepts become deprecated. In the context of scientific research, data management is no exception, as it becomes more challenging to deal with the growing volume of data and with the complexity of the surrounding techniques. Furthermore, it is common in companies, as well as in scientific research, a huge dependence on those who are responsible for the management of all the information, leading to the possibility that team changes are not as efficient as one would expect. It is therefore crucial to analyse, organise and document data. There are several techniques developed over the last years to deal with this problem, and the main focus of this dissertation is to adapt and apply the most appealing in the scrutiny of the currently known systems to handle the management of scientific data. These systems will be compared considering the following criteria: architecture, interoperability, metadata, usability and security. Finally, after adapting one of the solutions, a performance evaluation will be required in order to extrapolate its functioning in a real-world context., Universalmente, sabe-se que os dados estão em constante mudança, surgem novos conceitos e formas de os representar, e por vezes muitos destes conceitos são depreciados. No contexto da investigação científica, a gestão de dados não é excepção, pois torna-se mais desafiante lidar com o volume crescente de dados e com a complexidade das técnicas que os rodeiam. Além disso, é comum nas empresas, bem como na investigação científica, uma enorme dependência daqueles que são responsáveis pela gestão de toda a informação, levando à possibilidade de as mudanças de equipa não serem tão eficientes como seria de esperar. É, por conseguinte, crucial analisar, organizar e documentar os dados. Há várias técnicas desenvolvidas nos últimos anos para lidar com este problema, e o foco principal desta dissertação é adaptar e aplicar o mais apelativo na análise dos sistemas actualmente conhecidos para lidar com a gestão de dados científicos. Estes sistemas serão comparados considerando os seguintes critérios: arquitectura, interoperabilidade, metadados, usabilidade e segurança. Finalmente, após a adaptação de uma das soluções, será necessária uma avaliação de desempenho a fim de extrapolar o seu funcionamento num contexto do mundo real.

Social dominance, the main organizing principle of social hierarchies, facilitates priority access to resources by dominant individuals. Throughout taxa, individuals are more likely to become dominant if they act first in social situations and acting fast may provide evolutionary advantage; yet whether fast decision-making is a behavioral predisposition of dominant persons outside of social contexts is not known. Following characterization of participants for social dominance motivation, we found that, indeed, men high in social dominance respond faster–without loss of accuracy–than those low in dominance across a variety of decision-making tasks. Both groups did not differ in a simple reaction task. Then, we selected a decision-making task and applied high-density electroencephalography (EEG) to assess temporal dynamics of brain activation through event related potentials. We found that promptness to respond in the choice task in dominant individuals is related to a strikingly amplified brain signal at approximately 240 ms post-stimulus presentation. Source imaging analyses identified higher activity in the left insula and in the cingulate, right inferior temporal and right angular gyri in high than in low dominance participants. Our findings suggest that promptness to respond in choice situations, regardless of social context, is a biomarker for social disposition.

Visual backward masking (VBM) deficits are candidate endophenotypes of schizophrenia indexing genetic liability of the disorder. In VBM, a target is followed by a mask that deteriorates target perception. Schizophrenia patients and, to a lesser extent, their unaffected relatives show strong and reproducible VBM deficits. In patients, VBM deficits are associated with strongly decreased amplitudes in the evoked-related potentials (ERPs). Here, to unveil the neural mechanisms of VBM in schizophrenia, circumventing illness-specific confounds, we investigated the electroencephalogram correlates of VBM in unaffected siblings of schizophrenia patients. We tested 110 schizophrenia patients, 60 siblings, and 83 healthy controls. As in previous studies, patients showed strong behavioral deficits and decreased ERP amplitudes compared to controls. Surprisingly, the ERP amplitudes of siblings were even higher than the ones of controls, while their performances were similar. ERP amplitudes in siblings were found to correlate with performance. These results suggest that VBM is deteriorated in patients and siblings. However, siblings, unlike patients, can partially compensate for the deficits by over-activating a network of brain regions.

Num contexto cada vez mais imprevisível em termos orçamentais e, na sequência das várias restruturações operacionais, planeadas e presentemente em curso, a Força Aérea (FA) enfrenta um desafio ao nível da gestão de material (stocks excedentários), que, embora sem utilidade para a manutenção das suas atuais e renovadas frotas, continua a ocupar espaço de armazenagem, representando apenas um custo. Neste enquadramento, afigurou-se importante analisar formas alternativas de rentabilizar este material, por alienação, através, da utilização de um serviço disponibilizado pelo Governo Americano, no âmbito do seu programa de assistência Foreign Military Sales, o Worldwide Warehouse Redistribution Service (WWRS). O presente estudo assentou num raciocínio indutivo, no estudo de caso como desenho de pesquisa e numa estratégia de investigação qualitativa, de análise de conteúdo das respostas às entrevistas semiestruturadas realizadas a 18 experts, nacionais e internacionais, intervenientes em diferentes fases do processo de gestão de stocks. Da análise dos resultados, concluiu-se que é exequível utilizar o WWRS na gestão, rentabilizada, dos stocks armazenados pela FA, permitindo, entre outra mais-valias, libertar espaço de armazenagem, rentabilizar artigos já sem utilidade para o Ramo, algum retorno financeiro e consequente financiamento de outras capacidades core da organização/instituição. Faced with an increasingly unpredictable budget climate, in which several operational restructurings are both planned and underway, the Portuguese Air Force (PoAF) has the difficult task of managing its excess stocks, which are no longer useful to maintain the current and renewed fleets, but that nevertheless continue to take up storage space and are only generating loss of revenue. This study will analyse alternative ways to monetise these stocks by using a service provided by the U.S. Government as part of its Foreign Military Sales assistance programme, the Worldwide Warehouse Redistribution Service (WWRS).The study uses inductive reasoning, a case study research design and a qualitative research strategy based on content analysis of the answers to semi-structured interviews. The interviewee sample consists of 18 national and international experts who be feasible to use the WWRS to optimise the management of the PoAF’s stored inventory. Among other benefits, it would free up storage space, monetise items that are no longer useful for the Branch, providing a partial return on investment, which the organization / institution can use to finance other core capabilities. info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersion

Research on schizophrenia typically focuses on one paradigm, for which clear-cut abnormalities between patients and controls are established. Great care is taken to understand the underlying genetical, neurophysiological, and cognitive mechanisms, which eventually may explain the clinical outcome. This approach has led to many important hypotheses about the causes of schizophrenia. One tacit assumption of these deep rooting approaches is that paradigms tap into common and representative characteristics of the disease. Here, we analyzed resting-state electroencephalogram (EEG) of 121 schizophrenia patients and 75 age-matched controls, from which we extracted 194 features. Sixty-nine of these features showed significant group differences with medium to large effect sizes, indicating important abnormalities. To understand to what extent these features tap into the same aspects of the disorder, we computed both Pearson and partial least squares correlations. Surprisingly, correlations were very low, except for very similar features, where correlations were high, suggesting that most features are sensitive to different abnormalities. Using partial least squares regression, we show that combining the 69 features increases predictability of clinical outcomes by more than a factor of 5. We propose that complementing deep with shallow rooting approaches, where many roughly independent features are extracted from one paradigm (or several paradigms), will strongly improve diagnosis and potential treatment of schizophrenia.

BackgroundIn visual backward masking (VBM), a target is followed by a mask that decreases target discriminability. Schizophrenia patients (SZ) show strong and reproducible masking impairments, which are associated with reduced EEG amplitudes. Patients with bipolar disorder (BP) show masking deficits, too. Here, we investigated the neural EEG correlates of VBM in BP.Methods122 SZ, 94 unaffected controls, and 38 BP joined a standard VBM experiment. 123 SZ, 94 unaffected controls and 16 BP joined a corresponding EEG experiment, analyzed in terms of the global field power.ResultsAs in previous studies, SZ and BP show strong masking deficits. Importantly and similarly to SZ, BP show decreased global field power amplitudes at approximately 200 ms after the target onset, compared to controls.ConclusionsThese results suggest that VBM deficits are not specific for schizophrenia but for a broader range of functional psychoses. Potentially, both SZ and BP show deficient target enhancement.

Objective With the advent of high-density EEG and studies of large numbers of participants, yielding increasingly greater amounts of data, supervised methods for artifact rejection have become excessively time consuming. Here, we propose a novel automatic pipeline (APP) for pre-processing and artifact rejection of EEG data, which innovates relative to existing methods by not only following state-of-the-art guidelines but also further employing robust statistics. Methods APP was tested on event-related potential (ERP) data from healthy participants and schizophrenia patients, and resting-state (RS) data from healthy participants. Its performance was compared with that of existing automatic methods (FASTER for ERP data, TAPEEG and Prep pipeline for RS data) and supervised pre-processing by experts. Results APP rejected fewer bad channels and bad epochs than the other methods. In the ERP study, it produced significantly higher amplitudes than FASTER, which were consistent with the supervised scheme. In the RS study, it produced spectral measures that correlated well with the automatic alternatives and the supervised scheme. Conclusion APP effectively removed EEG artifacts, performing similarly to the supervised scheme and outperforming existing automatic alternatives. Significance The proposed automatic pipeline provides a reliable and efficient tool for pre-processing large datasets of both evoked and resting-state EEG.

In this paper we present the State of the Art in Secure Multiparty Computation Protocols to Privacy Preserving Data Mining. Basic definitions on the main topics are presented as some proposed protocols in the reviewed literature. We also briefly discuss the authors contribution under practical integration perspective and points some issues on using SMC in PPDM.

Dissertação de mestrado em Finance, The fossil fuel divestment movement and its importance on climate change is a recent topic that has been attracting the interest of society. The purpose of this dissertation is to evaluate and compare the financial performance between a portfolio of fossil fuel stocks and a portfolio without fossil fuel stocks from February 2009 to January 2019. To evaluate the performance of the portfolios we use the four-factor model of Carhart (1997). With the objective to overcoming certain limitations of this model, we further evaluate portfolio performance with the conditional model developed by Christopherson, Ferson and Glassman (1998), which allows for time-varying risk and performance. In this model, we use two public information variables that represent the state of the economy. Our results indicate that the investing in a fossil-free portfolio does not penalize investors relative to the benchmark. However, the fossil fuel portfolio outperforms the green portfolio regardless of the model used. Furthermore, we analyze the exposure of each portfolio to the risk factors and observe that the fossil-free portfolio is exposed to small caps., O desinvestimento em combustíveis fosseis e sua importância nas mudanças climáticas é um dos temas da atualidade. O objetivo desta dissertação é comparar o desempenho financeiro de uma carteira constituída apenas com ações de combustíveis fósseis e uma carteira sem ações de combustíveis fosseis para o período de Fevereiro de 2009 a Janeiro de 2019. Para avaliar o desempenho das carteiras, usamos o modelo de quatro fatores desenvolvido por Carhart (1997). Com o objetivo de ultrapassar algumas limitações do modelo anterior, avaliamos ainda o desempenho das carteiras com um modelo condicional desenvolvido por Christopherson, Ferson e Glassman (1998) que assume a variação temporal do risco e desempenho. Neste modelo, utilizamos duas variáveis de informação pública que representam o estado da economia. Os nossos resultados indicam que investir numa carteira sem empresas de combustíveis fósseis não penaliza o desempenho relativamente ao mercado, embora a carteira de combustíveis fósseis tenha um desempenho superior ao da carteira verde em todos os modelos que implementamos. Adicionalmente, observamos a exposição de cada carteira aos fatores de risco, observando-se que a carteira sem empresas de combustíveis fosseis está exposta a empresas de pequena capitalização.

Mestrado em Economia Monetária e Financeira Os efeitos da crise financeira de 2007-2008 e da crise das dividas soberanas Europeias espalharam-se pelo sistema financeiro, os bancos e os estados soberanos. Estas crises expuseram as economias mais vulneráveis e causaram mudanças profundas na maneira como o risco é avaliado, incluindo o risco das dividas soberanas, aumentando o spread dos juros dos títulos de divida soberana. Esta dissertação analisa estes eventos, focando-se no caso Português e Espanhol depois de abordar a situação Europeia. A mudança do preço do risco soberano foi averiguada através de, uma análise em painel OLS/2SLS fixed effects num conjunto de países da Zona Euro e uma regressão SUR com Portugal e Espanha, ambas abrangendo o período entre 1999:11 até 2019:6. Os resultados mostram que o preço do risco soberano mudou com a crise e com o discurso "whatever it takes" de Mario Draghi. Nomeadamente, o preço atribuido ao risco de crédito, risco de liquidez e apetitite de risco da Zona Euro pelos mercados aumentou após as crises e diminui a seguir ao discurso de Mario Draghi. Não encontramos provas de mudanças no regime de preços após o discurso no caso Português e Espanhol. The 2007-2008 financial crisis and the European sovereign debt crisis effects rippled through the financial system, banks and sovereign states. The crises exposed the most vulnerable economies and caused profound changes on how risk is assessed, including sovereign risk, raising sovereign bond yields spreads across the Eurozone. This dissertation analyzes these events, focusing on the Portuguese and Spanish case after providing an insight into the Eurozone. The change in the pricing of sovereign risk was assessed by performing an OLS/2SLS fixed effects panel analysis on a pool of Eurozone countries and a SUR regression with Portugal and Spain covering the period 1999:11 until 2019:6. Our main results show that the pricing of sovereign risk changed with the crisis and the "whatever it takes" speech of Mario Draghi. Specifically, markets pricing of the Eurozone credit risk, liquidity risk and the risk appetite increased after the crisis and it relaxed after Mario Draghi´s speech. Sabendo de antemão que Kierkegaard defende três estados existenciais para o indivíduo, interessou-nos centrar a análise no primeiro dos dois, no estado estético, e na possibilidade que o indivíduo tem de ‘sair’ deste. Mais concretamente, procurou-se provar que o conceito subjacente a este estádio é o ‘instante presente’ e a qualidade deste enquanto preenchimento de instantes que se sucedem de forma aparentemente igual, ao mesmo ritmo, sem cessar até ao dia da nossa morte. Assim, e a partir dos textos de Kierkegaard, principalmente «A Alternativa (Ou… Ou…)» é feita uma análise daqueles que caracterizam o estado estético por forma a demonstrar que o ‘tempo’ está presente em todos eles, nomeadamente a sua relação com o ‘instante agora’. Através da análise aos ‘symparanekrômenoi’ (comunidade daqueles que estão a morrer ao mesmo tempo), veremos que o ‘instante’ é vivido pelos membros desta comunidade como uma unidade que existe para deixar de existir. O seu fito é o de ser substituído por outro ‘instante’. Sendo uma comunidade de estetas, o que cada membro desta comunidade advoga é o aproveitamento o melhor possível esse instante, vivendo a vida como uma renovação de sensações e de experiências justapostas umas às outras. Analisando a infelicidade, Kierkegaard apresenta dois tipos de infelizes: o da esperança e o da recordação, veremos aqui como é que o ‘instante’ passado pode influenciar o futuro e como esse ‘instante’ pode tornar miserável aquele que por ele está a ser influenciado. O mesmo se passa com aquele que vive sob a esperança num ‘instante’ futuro. Uma vez mais, e para os estetas, o erro está em não viver o presente como tal, i.e., como ‘instante aqui e agora’. Como solução, o esteta tem por objectivo dominar o ‘instante’ prevendo humores, tal como o marinheiro perscruta o horizonte à procura dos indícios que o levem a prever os temporais. Desta forma, assegura-se que todos os ‘instantes’ são plenos e vividos intensamente. Também a possibilidade da personalidade de um indivíduo estético se poder transformar numa personalidade ética, assenta numa descrição do ‘instante’. Neste caso no ‘instante’ da tomada de decisão. O esteta opta quase sempre pela não decisão, adiando esse momento cada vez que se lhe apresenta. O grande objectivo do esteta é seguir indefinidamente aquilo que os seus apetites lhe apontam, estando apto e receptivo apenas às suas disposições. O esteta escolhe não escolher, e quando a vida lhe impõe qualquer tipo de decisões, lança-se irremediavelmente na experimentação de todas as possibilidades que se abrem no momento da escolha. Julga-se deste modo livre. Se a liberdade é uma das características do estado estético, a imediatez, ou melhor, o carácter imediato como um esteta é aquilo que é, não recorrendo para isso à reflexão, é outra. Por fim verificaremos que a personalidade do esteta é marcadamente acidental, na medida em que toda a justificação para a sua conduta de vida é uma fuga ao desespero, à angústia e ao tédio.
