Aim: To investigate epidemiological characteristics of road traffic accidents that occurred in the city center of Duzce in 2011 and to evaluate causes of accidents. Methods: In this retrospective study data were obtained from and ldquo;Official Traffic Accidents Form and rdquo; that were filled by the Police Officers at the minutes of detections of the accidents occurred in 2011 and analyzed. Results: Total 623 traffic accidents were occurred and 291 of them caused damage to property and 332 of them caused mortality or injury in the year of 2011. At the accidents in which the drivers male were caused more mortality or injury. Accidents that caused damage to property occurred more often during the winter months and takes place in December and September, mortal-injury accidents were more frequent at September, October, November months and Autumn. Accidents caused both mortality or injuries and damage to property occured mostly in the open air. Accidents that caused damage to property occurred more often during Tuesdays and Wednesdays and mortal-injury accidents were more frequent at Saturdays. Conclusion: Traffic accident of time, place, road and air condition, characteristics of the person who accident is effective in the occurrence of traffic accidents. OBJECTIVE In this study, the prevalence of intestinal parasites and its relationship with some hygiene habits and socio-demographic characteristics of students in Yigilca were investigated. METHODS This study was conducted in three parts. Firstly, the prevalence of parasitic diseases was measured, and questionnaires about the level of knowledge of hygiene were administered. Secondly, control and intervention groups were determined. Lastly, some education and training courses were organized and provided to the intervention group, including parents and children, about the prevention of parasitic diseases and habits of cleaning. RESULTS In this study, 540 cellophane tapes and 523 stool samples were studied. Among the samples analyzed, 87 (16.1%) with Enterobius vermicularis, 79 (15.1%) with Giardia intestinalis, 73 (13.9%) with various non-pathogenic parasites, 1 (0.19%) with Ascaris lumbricoides, and 1 (0.19%) with Hymenolepis nana were found. G. intestinalis was highly positive among the children who do not wash their hands after defecation. Also, some intestinal parasites were found to be related to the socio-demographic characteristics of families; parental education, family income, and father's profession were found to be associated with the presence of intestinal parasites. After training, the intervention group showed a significant decrease in the number of giardiasis and enterobiasis cases. CONCLUSION Education on hygiene will prevent parasitic diseases from an early age.

Müdahale gruplarına eğitim verilmiştir. Üçüncü yıl bu kontrol ve müdahale gruplarında parazitoz ve hijyen konusundaki gelişme araştırılmış, sonuçlar karşılaştırılmıştır. İlk olarak, toplam 826 çocuğa ulaşılmış ancak öğrencilere ait 523 dışkı örneği ve 540 selofan bant örneği incelenebilmiştir. Dışkı örneklerine direk bakı, %0,85'lik NaCl, formol-eter konsantrasyon işlemi sonrasında lugol, kinyoun asit-fast ve trikrom boyama yöntemleri uygulanmıştır. Bulgular: İncelenen örneklerde 87 (% 16,1) Enterobius vermicularis, 79 (% 15,1) Giardia intestinalis, 73 (% 13,9) patojen olmayan çeşitli parazitler, 1 (% 0,19) Ascaris lumbricoides, 1 (% 0,19) Hymenolepis nana, saptanmıştır. Bulunan sonuçlar anket cevapları ile birlikte analiz edilmiştir. Dışkılama sonrası ellerini yıkamayan çocuklarda G. intestinalis yüksek oranda pozitif saptanmıştır. Ayrıca anne-baba eğitim durumu, ailenin gelir düzeyi ve baba mesleği ile bağırsak parazitleri varlığının ilişkili olduğu bulunmuştur. Üçüncü aşamada müdahale grubunda 68 (45,6%), kontrol grubunda 81 (54,4%) toplam 149 çocuk incelenmiştir. Eğitim sonrası müdahale grubunda giardiyazis ve enterobiazis olgu sayılarında belirgin azalma görülmüştür. Sonuç: Paraziter hastalıkların bu bölgede önemli bir halk sağlığı sorunu olduğu görülmüştür. Background Iron may be only one of many nutritional factors that influence thyroid hormone metabolism in iodine-deficient areas. Objective To evaluate the effect of iron status on thyroid hormone profile in adolescents living in a mild iodine-deficient area in Turkey. Subjects Three hundred and thirty school-aged children with mean age 14 years were examined. Methods Free triiodothyronine, free tetraiodothyronine and thyrotropin levels were analyzed by chemiluminescent enzyme immunoassay. Hemoglobin and mean corpuscular volume were measured with a Hemocounter. Iron and total iron binding capacity concentration were determined by colorimetric photometric methods. Ferritin level was determined by immunoturbidimetry. Results Thyroid hormone levels of the children with anemia were not significantly different compared to children without anemia. No significant correlation was found between thyroid hormones and iron status. Conclusion The thyroid hormone profile was not significantly affected in this area. This survey showed no correlation between iron status and thyroid hormone levels.

This study was designed to evaluate the effects of furniture production, mainly including fir tree (aberia mulleriana), on respiratory health of young workers and to compare the results with those obtained from previous studies. Sixty-four furniture-decoration students (57 males and 7 females) and 62 controls (54 male, 8 female) from different departments in the same school were included into the study. All participants were assessed with a questionnaire (concerning history of occupational exposure, work-related respiratory and other symptoms, smoking history, previous asthma history), full physical examination, spirometric evaluation and chest radiograph. Participants then performed serial monitoring of peak expiratory flow rates (PEFR) at work and away from work within a month. Mean age of students was 20.9 +/- 3.7 years, 20.5 +/- 2.6 years in controls. There was no difference between study and control groups with regard to age, gender, smoking status and previous asthma history. Reported cough (23.4 % vs. 8.1 %) and shortness of breath (18.8 % vs. 6.5 %) were significantly higher in furniture-decoration students than in controls (p = 0.016 and p = 0.034, respectively). Furniture-decoration students had higher conjunctivitis (34.4 % vs. 9.7 %, p = 0.001) and rhinitis (34.4 % vs. 19.4 %, p = 0.044) history when compared with controls. Both students and controls were normal in terms of respiratory examination. PEF recordings were performed for approximately one month. Diurnal variability greater than 20 % was seen in 12/64 (18.7 %) of students at work, whereas it was detected in 4/62 (6.4 %) of controls (p = 0.034). When comparing for the presence of diurnal variability greater than 20 % in weekends, no difference was found between groups (p = 0.457). In conclusion, early detection of work-related respiratory changes by serial monitoring of peak expiratory flows should save the workers from hazardous respiratory effects of the furniture production, especially in young population.
