Objectives: This study aimed to assess the real use of cefazolin for methicillin-susceptible Staphylococcus aureus (MSSA) infective endocarditis (IE) in the Spanish National Endocarditis Database (GAMES) and to compare it with antistaphylococcal penicillin (ASP). Methods: Prospective cohort study with retrospective analysis of a cohort of MSSA IE treated with cloxacillin and/or cefazolin. Outcomes assessed were relapse; intra-hospital, overall, and endocarditis-related mortality; and adverse events. Risk of renal toxicity with each treatment was evaluated separately. Results: We included 631 IE episodes caused by MSSA treated with cloxacillin and/or cefazolin. Antibiotic treatment was cloxacillin, cefazolin, or both in 537 (85%), 57 (9%), and 37 (6%) episodes, respectively. VIM-type-producing Gram-negative bacteria (GNB) infections are difficult to treat. This is a retrospective single-center study of 34 patients who received cefiderocol for the treatment of VIM-type-producing GNB infections, including 25 Pseudomonas spp., 7 Enterobacterales, and 5 Achromobacter sp. Primary outcomes were clinical failure (defined as death, lack of clinical improvement, or a switch to another drug) at day 14 and 30-day all-cause mortality. The median age was 59 years (IQR 53.7–73.4), and the median Charlson comorbidity index was 3.5 (IQR 2–5). The main infections were respiratory tract infections (n = 9, 27%) and skin and soft tissue infections (n = 9, 27%). Eight patients exhibited bacteremia. In 9/17 patients with a drainable focus, drainage was performed. The median cefiderocol treatment duration was 13 days (IQR 8–24). Five patients (15%) experienced clinical failure on day 14, and the thirty-day mortality rate was 9/34 (27%); two cases occurred because of an uncontrolled infection source, and one was due to a new infection caused by the same bacteria. The other six deaths were unrelated to the index infection. Five patients experienced microbiological recurrence within three months. Susceptibility testing revealed the development of cefiderocol resistance in 1/7 cases with persistent or recurrent positive cultures. Cefiderocol, even in monotherapy, could be considered for the treatment of VIM-type-producing GNB infections.

The correct initial colonization and establishment of the gut microbiota during the early stages of life is a key step, with long-lasting consequences throughout the entire lifespan of the individual. This process is affected by several perinatal factors; among them, feeding mode is known to have a critical role. Breastfeeding is the optimal nutrition for neonates; however, it is not always possible, especially in cases of prematurity or early pathology. In such cases, most commonly babies are fed with infant formulas in spite of the official nutritional and health international organizations’ recommendation on the use of donated human milk through milk banks for these cases. However, donated human milk still does not totally match maternal milk in terms of infant growth and gut microbiota development. The present review summarizes the practices of milk banks and hospitals regarding donated human milk, its safety and quality, and the health outcomes in infants fed with donated human milk. Additionally, we explore different alternatives to customize pasteurized donated human milk with the aim of finding the perfect match between each baby and banked milk for promoting the establishment of a beneficial gut microbiota from the early stages of life.

The reaction between 5-acetylbarbituric acid and 4-dimethylthiosemicarbazide or 4-hexamethyleneiminyl thiosemicarbazide produces 5-acetylbarbituric-4-dimethylthiosemicarbazone (H2AcbDM) and 5-acetylbarbituric-4N-hexamethyleneiminyl thiosemicarbazone (H2Acbhexim). Eight new complexes with different copper(II) salts have been prepared and characterized using elemental analysis, molar conductance, UV–Vis, ESI-HRMS, FT-IR, magnetic moment, EPR, and cyclic voltammetry. In addition, three-dimensional molecular structures of [Cu(HAcbDM)(H2O)2](NO3)·H2O (3a), [Cu(HAcbDM)(H2O)2]ClO4 (4), and [Cu(HAcbHexim)Cl] (6) were determined by single crystal X-ray crystallography, and an analysis of their supramolecular structure was carried out. The H-bonded assemblies were further studied energetically using DFT calculations and MEP surface and QTAIM analyses. In these complexes, the thiosemicarbazone coordinates to the metal ion in an ONS-tridentate manner, in the O-enolate/S-thione form. The electrochemical behavior of the thiosemicarbazones and their copper(II) complexes has been investigated at room temperature using the cyclic voltammetry technique in DMFA. The Cu(II)/Cu(I) redox system was found to be consistent with the quasi-reversible diffusion-controlled process.

Este artigo trata do histórico e do enquadramento atual da designação Pedra do Patrimônio da União Internacional de Ciências Geológicas (IUGS) outorgada a rochas utilizadas em construções arquitetônicas e monumentos representativos de aspectos integrais da cultura humana. A designação Pedra do Patrimônio da IUGS visa contribuir para a disseminação do conhecimento geológico na sociedade e para a conservação dos monumentos. Para ser designada, uma rocha precisa ser formalmente proposta à Subcomissão de Pedras do Patrimônio da Comissão Internacional de Geopatrimônio (HSS/ICG) da IUGS, seguindo o padrão de relatório da HSS e sustentada por publicações científicas e técnicas, com detalhamento das características geológicas e tecnológicas da pedra candidata, pedreiras de origem e justificativa do seu valor cultural para a humanidade. Já obtiveram a designação 32 pedras, algumas componentes do patrimônio de muitos países, como o Mármore Carrara, da Itália, e outras de uso regional, mas significantes para a cultura global por integrar patrimônios da humanidade da Organização das Nações Unidas para a Educação, a Ciência e a Cultura (UNESCO), como o Calcário Jaisalmer, da Índia. Pelo Brasil, duas pedras serão propostas em 2023: o Gnaisse Facoidal, do Rio de Janeiro, e o Esteatito, de Minas Gerais. A escassa e dispersa informação disponível no Brasil sobre os materiais pétreos utilizados no patrimônio representa um desafio, e a contribuição dos geocientistas é fundamental para propor novas candidaturas a Pedras do Patrimônio da IUGS por meio da documentação das características, da origem e do uso das pedras brasileiras. Ainda, o compartilhamento do conhecimento com profissionais de outras áreas e a divulgação para a sociedade são importantes contribuições para a conservação do patrimônio cultural brasileiro.

Food allergies represent a serious health concern and, since the 1990s, they have risen gradually in high-income countries. Unfortunately, the problem is complex because genetic, epigenetic, and environmental factors may be collectively involved. Prevention and diagnoses have not yet evolved into efficacious therapies. Identification and control of allergens present in edible substances hold promise for multi-purpose biomedical approaches, including oral immunotherapy. This review highlights recent studies and methods to modify the otherwise innocuous native proteins in most subjects, and how oral treatments targeting immune responses could help cancel out the potential risks in hypersensitive individuals, especially children. We have focused on some physical methods that can easily be conducted, along with chemo-enzymatic modifications of allergens by means of peptides and phytochemicals in particular. The latter, accessible from naturally-occurring substances, provide an added value to hypoallergenic matrices employing vegetal wastes, a point where food chemistry meets sustainable goals as well.

The biomolecule chelidonic acid (H2chel, 4-oxo-4H-pyran-2,6-dicarboxylic acid) has been used to build new coordination polymers with the bridging N,N′-ligands 4,4′-bipyridine (4,4-bipy) and 1,2-bis(4-pyridyl)ethane (bpe). Four compounds have been obtained as single crystals: 1D cationic coordination polymers [M(4,4-bipy)(OH2)4]2+ with chelidonate anions and water molecules in the second coordination sphere in 1∞[Zn(4,4-bipy)(H2O)4]chel·3H2O (2) and in the two pseudopolymorphic 1∞[Cu(4,4-bipy)(H2O)4]chel·nH2O (n = 3, 4a; n = 6, 4b), and the 2D neutral coordination polymers 2∞[Zn(chel)(4,4-bipy)(H2O)]·2H2O (1) and 2∞[Zn(chel)(bpe)(H2O)]·H2O (3) where the chelidonate anion acts as a bridging ligand. The effects of the hydrogen bonds on the crystal packing were analyzed. The role of the water molecules hosted within the crystals lattices was also studied.

The Doñana National Park (DNP) is a protected area with water resources drastically diminishing due to the unsustainable extraction of groundwater for agricultural irrigation and human consumption of a nearby coastal city. In this study, we explore the potential of wavelet analysis applied to high-temporal-resolution groundwater-and-surface-water time series of temporary coastal ponds in the DNP. Wavelet analysis was used to measure the frequency of changes in water levels and water temperature, both crucial to our understanding of complex hydrodynamic patterns. Results show that the temporary ponds are groundwater-dependent ecosystems of a through-flow type and are still connected to the sand-dune aquifer, regardless of their hydrological affection, due to groundwater withdrawal. These ponds, even those most affected by pumping in nearby drills, are not perched over the saturated zone. This was proven by the evidence of a semi-diurnal (i.e., 6 h) signal in the surface-level time series of the shallow temporary ponds. This signal is, at the same time, related to the influence of the tides affecting the coastal sand-dune aquifer. Finally, we detected other hydrological processes that affect the ponds, such as evaporation and evapotranspiration, with a clear diurnal (12 h) signal. The maintenance of the ecological values and services to the society of this emblematic wetland is currently in jeopardy, due to the effect of the groundwater abstraction for irrigation. The results of this study contribute to the understanding of the behavior of these fragile ecosystems of DNP, and will also contribute to sound-integrated water-resource management.

Abstract Background The Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) is a novel disease which has been having a worldwide affect since December 2019. Evidence regarding the effects of SARS-CoV-2 during pregnancy is conflicting. The presence of SARS-CoV-2 has been demonstrated in biological samples during pregnancy (placenta, umbilical cord or amniotic fluid); however, maternal and fetal effects of the virus are not well known. Methods Descriptive, multicentre, longitudinal, observational study in eight tertiary care hospitals throughout Spain, that are referral centres for pregnant women with COVID-19. All pregnant women with positive SARS-CoV-2 real-time reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction during their pregnancy or 14 days preconception and newborns born to mothers infected with SARS-CoV-2 will be included. They will continue to be followed up until 4 weeks after delivery. The aim of the study is to investigate both the effect of COVID-19 on the pregnancy, and the effect of the pregnancy status with the evolution of the SARS-CoV-2 disease. Other samples (faeces, urine, serum, amniotic fluid, cord and peripheral blood, placenta and breastmilk) will be collected in order to analyse whether or not there is a risk of vertical transmission and to describe the behaviour of the virus in other fluids. Neonates will be followed until 6 months after delivery to establish the rate of neonatal transmission. We aim to include 150 pregnant women and their babies. Ethics approval will be obtained from all the participating centres. Discussion There is little information known about COVID-19 and its unknown effects on pregnancy. This study will collect a large number of samples in pregnant women which will allow us to demonstrate the behaviour of the virus in pregnancy and postpartum in a representative cohort of the Spanish population.

La lexicografía del siglo xxi afronta una transición decisiva. En un contexto de disrupción tecnológica, la proliferación de diccionarios en línea de consulta abierta, la consolidación de plataformas gratuitas como WordReference, Reverso, Linguee o Wiktionary, y el avance de los traductores automáticos plantean todo un desafío a las editoriales. Para analizar el momento crítico que atraviesa la lexicografía, este artículo aborda el impacto tecnológico, comparando las ventajas y desventajas de los diccionarios en papel frente a los diccionarios electrónicos. Asimismo, se debaten cuestiones transversales como la calidad de los diccionarios y la satisfacción de las necesidades de los usuarios. El objetivo es ofrecer un mapa del estado actual de la metalexicografía y señalar los desafíos y obstáculos a los que se enfrenta la lexicografía en la era digital.

Deep tissue imaging has been limited by the low brightness of probes emitting in the second near-infrared window. Here, the authors use femtosecond laser irradiation to grow a protective shell on Ag2S nanoparticles, achieving 80-fold quantum yield enhancement and imaging with low excitation intensities.

The reproductive cycle of Diopatra neapolitana was studied over two years in Redondela (NW Spain), considering both the monthly evolution of the percentage of individuals with oocytes and the variation of the mean oocyte size. Moreover, since three other species of Diopatra have recently been documented in regions geographically close to NW Spain, we first confirmed the identity of this species by carrying out a morphological identification of a representative number of the specimens collected. Our data showed a discontinuous reproductive season, with a period of proliferation and maturation of oocytes from January to September and asynchronous spawning events between July and October. Then, a resting period in the months of November and December was observed. We also explored the influence of some relevant environmental factors (namely, water temperature, photoperiod, salinity, primary production and upwelling index) on the observed reproductive cycle. The results suggest that water temperature is one of the most important drivers of the reproductive cycle for this species. Particularly, in Ría de Vigo, the reproductive cycle seems to be influenced by upwelling events of deep cold water that occur frequently between March and September, and that could act as a spawning-inducing switch.

Resumen: Objetivo: Estudiar la evolución clínica de una serie de pacientes con hipervitaminosis B12. Método: Estudio observacional retrospectivo de una cohorte de pacientes a lo largo de un año, con seguimiento de sus historias clínicas en tres momentos: inicial, a los 6 meses y al año. Emplazamiento: Atención Primaria y Hospitalaria del Área Oeste de Valladolid. Participantes: Se parte de 102 pacientes de edad adulta, de los que se pierden 55 (mayoritariamente por reposición parenteral), con procedencia de ambos niveles asistenciales, y valores de vitamina B12 > 970 pg/ml en sus analíticas del mes de enero de 2016 efectuadas en el laboratorio central del Hospital Río Hortega de Valladolid. Se excluyen pacientes hematológicos y oncológicos. Mediciones principales: Las variables recogidas son: edad, sexo, procedencia, valores de acido fólico y vitamina B12, comorbilidades y patologías relacionadas. Se expresan en porcentajes. Resultados: El 8,5% (3 casos) muestran patología tumoral —valores próximos a los de la bibliografía—. La mortalidad es muy alta (25%, 12 pacientes), siendo la causa infecciosa la más frecuente; incluso en el 41,6% (5 casos) podría actuar como reactante de fase aguda. Conclusiones: La hipervitaminosis B12 puede comportarse como indicador de alerta inespecífico, por lo que precisa rastreo y seguimiento a lo largo de los meses. Abstract: Objectives: To study clinical evolution on a group of patients with hipervitaminosis B12. Method: Retrospective and observational record on a patients group. Their clinical records were collected and follow-up in three times a year. First, as beginning; secondly, after six months, and finally, a year. Place: Primary and hospitalarian care levels in Western Valladolid Area (Spain). Participants: From 102 adults from both levels with 55 losses (most of them are external supplies): 47 patients with vitamin B12 higher than 970 pg/ml at 2016 January in main central laboratory in Rio Hortega Hospital in Valladolid (Spain) excluding oncological and hematological patients. Main measures: B12 and folic levels with comorbidities and linked-pathologies percentages Age, sex, care level, folic and vitamin B12 were collected as percentages. Results: A 8.5% (3 cases) in tumoral pathology (close to literature). The mortality is very high, a 24% (12 cases) with infectious causes as the most prevalent; and even, in 41.6% (5 cases) as acute reactant. Conclusion: It could be relevant to consider higher B12 values as a unspecified warning signal. Its surveillance is recommended a long time.

Blood culture negative endocarditis (BCNE) is frequent in infective endocarditis (IE). One of the causes of BCNE is fastidious microorganisms, such as Bartonella spp. The aim of this study was to describe the epidemiologic, clinical characteristics, management and outcomes of patients with Bartonella IE from the “Spanish Collaboration on Endocarditis-Grupo de Apoyo al Manejo de la Endocarditis infecciosa en España (GAMES)”cohort. Here we presented 21 cases of Bartonella IE. This represents 0.3% of a total of 5590 cases and 2% of the BCNE from the GAMES cohort. 62% were due to Bartonella henselae and 38% to Bartonella quintana. Cardiac failure was the main presenting form (61.5% in B. hensalae, 87.5% in B. quintana IE) and the aortic valve was affected in 85% of the cases (76% in B. henselae, 100% in B. quintana IE). Typical signs such as fever were recorded in less than 40% of patients. Echocardiography showed vegetations in 92% and 100% of the patients with B. henselae and B. quintana, respectively. Culture was positive only in one patient and the remaining were diagnosed by serology and PCR. PCR was the most useful tool allowing for diagnosis in 16 patients (100% of the studied valves). Serology, at titers recommended by guidelines, only coincided with PCR in 52.4%. Antimicrobial therapy, in different combinations, was used in all cases. Surgery was performed in 76% of the patients. No in-hospital mortality was observed. One-year mortality was 9.4%. This article remarks the importance for investigating the presence of Bartonella infection as causative agent in all BCNE since the diagnosis needs specific microbiological tools and patients could benefit of a specific treatment.

The start of the 20th century on Bioko Island (Equatorial Guinea) coincides with the expansion of Spanish colonisation. Around 1910, the intense process of “Hispanicisation” began, totally disrupting native Bubi society. The colonial government, together with the intense evangelisation carried out on the island by the Catholic Church, weakened and modified Bubi power structures. Colonialism also provoked important changes in Bubi family structure and the evangelising mission was, fundamentally, directed toward controlling and transforming marriage practices. This text analyses how the loss of the political function of the Bubi chieftainships affected marriage practices and examines the other variables that influenced these changes and their effects on the present-day situation of Bubi women. Finally, the text explains how the practices and values that the evangelisation managed to introduce influenced the construction of Bubi ethnic identity.

The aim of the study is to report the results obtained from performing a Proximal Abduction Ulnar Osteotomy (PAUL) technique in a cohort of dogs with medial compartment disease with short- and long-term follow-up, assessing the perception of the owners and describing the long-term complications associated with the technique. This is a clinical prospective study, including dogs diagnosed with medial compartment disease treated with elbow arthroscopy and PAUL between 2013 and 2020. Long-term follow-up data and postoperative complications were registered, and a questionnaire adapted from Fitzpatrick et al. 2009 was collected from owners. Thirty-three elbows in 26 dogs were included. The duration of follow-up ranged from 4 to 61 months (median: 24.76 months). At the end of the study, 73.1% of the owners reported excellent satisfaction and 74.1% of the owners would repeat the surgery in the same circumstances. The owner questionnaire showed a greater capacity to walk and run, without lameness and pain, and climb up and down stairs a year after surgery, being constant at the end of the study. Major postoperative complications were documented in 4/33 elbows (12.12%), including delayed union, implant failure, and osteophytosis of the medial aspect of the coronoid process. In conclusion, elbow arthroscopy and the PAUL technique achieved an evident improvement in the quality of life of patients with great satisfaction for most of the owners.

Protein folding is an essential step for protein functionality. In eukaryotes this process is carried out by multiple chaperones that act in a cooperative manner to maintain the proteome homeostasis. Some of these chaperones are assisted during protein folding by different co-chaperones. One of these co-chaperones is HOP, the HSP70-HSP90 organizing protein. This assistant protein, due to its importance, has been deeply analyzed in other eukaryotes, but its function has only recently started to be envisaged in plants. In this kingdom, the role of HOP has been associated to plant response to different cellular, biotic and abiotic stresses. In this article, we analyze the current knowledge about HOP in eukaryotes, paying a special attention to the recently described roles of HOP in plants. In addition, we discuss the recent breakthroughs in the field and the possible new avenues for the study of plant HOP proteins in the future.

Este artículo presenta un estudio innovador sobre la representación de la agenda-setting de los principales grupos de medios españoles (RTVE, Prisa, Vocento, Unidad Editorial, COPE, Atresmedia, Planeta, Godó, Mediaset España y Libertad Digital), en el contexto de las Elecciones Generales en España del año 2015. El estudio emplea una metodología cuantitativa con base a un análisis de contenido de los principales programas con espacios de opinión sobre política en la radio y televisión española, así como de los principales periódicos vinculados a estos grupos mediáticos. Asimismo, se emplea la herramienta metodológica composicional del CoDa-biplot, que contribuye a visualizar y enfatizar la relevancia relativa de los componentes en estudio. El artículo proporciona un mapeo de la agenda de los principales grupos de medios en el contexto electoral, al tiempo que alcanza la representación de los efectos del priming y la espiral del silencio en el estudio proporcional de los issues y emisores de la agenda.

Abstract Background The ability of Staphylococcus aureus to invade tissues and cause an infectious disease is the result of a multi-factorial process supported by the huge number of virulence factors inherent to this microorganism tightly regulated by the accessory gene regulator (agr). During antimicrobial therapy bacteria may be exposed to sub-inhibitory concentrations (subMICs) of antibiotics that may trigger transcriptional changes that may have an impact on the pathogenesis of infection. The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of oxacillin sub-MICs on agr system expression as the key component in the regulation of virulence in methicillin-susceptible (MSSA) and -resistant S. aureus (MRSA) strains. Furthermore, we studied the genetic basis of the agr locus and their potential association with the expression levels. Methods We have examined the expression of RNAIII and agrA mRNA as biomarkers for agr expression in the presence and absence of oxacillin subMICs in 10 MSSA and 4 MRSA clinical strains belonging to 5 clonal complexes (CC45-agrI, CC8-agrI, CC5-agrII, CC15-agrII and CC30-agrIII) causing endovascular complications. The DNA sequences of agr locus were obtained by whole genome sequencing. Results Our results revealed that exposure to subMICs of oxacillin had an impact on agr locus expression modifying the relative levels of expression with increases in 11 strains and with decreases in 3 strains. Thereby, the exposure to subMICs of oxacillin resulted in higher levels of expression of agr in CC15 and CC45 and lower levels in CC30. We also observed the presence of mutations in agrC and agrA in 13/14 strains with similar mutation profiles among strains within individual CCs except for strains of CC5. Although, agr expression levels differed among strains within CCs, the presence of these mutations was associated with differences in agr expression levels in most cases. Conclusions Changes in agr expression induced by exposure to oxacillin subMICs should be considered because they could lead to changes in the virulence modulation and have an adverse effect on the course of infection, especially in certain clonal complexes.

Antibiotics are important disruptors of the intestinal microbiota establishment, linked to immune and metabolic alterations. The intrapartum antibiotics prophylaxis (IAP) is a common clinical practice that is present in more than 30% of labours, and is known to negatively affect the gut microbiota composition. However, little is known about how it affects to Bifidobacterium (sub)species level, which is one of the most important intestinal microbial genera early in life. This study presents qualitative and quantitative analyses of the bifidobacterial (sub)species populations in faecal samples, collected at 2, 10, 30 and 90 days of life, from 43 healthy full-term babies, sixteen of them delivered after IAP use. This study uses both 16S rRNA–23S rRNA internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region sequencing and q-PCR techniques for the analyses of the relative proportions and absolute levels, respectively, of the bifidobacterial populations. Our results show that the bifidobacterial populations establishment is affected by the IAP at both quantitative and qualitative levels. This practice can promote higher bifidobacterial diversity and several changes at a compositional level. This study underlines specific targets for developing gut microbiota-based products for favouring a proper bifidobacterial microbiota development when IAP is required.

Emergency abdominal surgery carries high morbidity and mortality rates in human medicine; however, there is less evidence characterising the outcome of these surgeries as a single group in dogs. The aim of the study was to characterise the clinical course, associated complications and outcome of dogs undergoing emergency abdominal surgery. A retrospective study was conducted. Dogs undergoing emergency laparotomy were included in the study. Logistic regression analysis was performed to identify variables correlated with death and complications. Eighty-two dogs were included in the study. The most common reason for surgery was a gastrointestinal foreign body. Overall, the 15-day mortality rate was 20.7% (17/82). The median (range) length of hospitalisation was 3 (0.5–15) days. Of the 82 patients, 24 (29.3%) developed major complications and 66 (80.5%) developed minor complications. Perioperative factors significantly associated with death included tachycardia (p < 0.001), hypothermia (p < 0.001), lactate acidosis (p < 0.001), shock index > 1 (p < 0.001), leukopenia (p < 0.001) and thrombocytopenia (p < 0.001) at admission, as well as intraoperative hypotension (p < 0.001) and perioperative use of blood products (p < 0.001). The results of this study suggest that mortality and morbidity rates after emergency abdominal surgery in dogs are high.

The early life gut microbiota has been reported to be involved in neonatal weight gain and later infant growth. Therefore, this early microbiota may constitute a target for the promotion of healthy neonatal growth and development with potential consequences for later life. Unfortunately, we are still far from understanding the association between neonatal microbiota and weight gain and growth. In this context, we evaluated the relationship between early microbiota and weight in a cohort of full-term infants. The absolute levels of specific fecal microorganisms were determined in 88 vaginally delivered and 36 C-section-delivered full-term newborns at 1 month of age and their growth up to 12 months of age. We observed statistically significant associations between the levels of some early life gut microbes and infant weight gain during the first year of life. Classifying the infants into tertiles according to their Staphylococcus levels at 1 month of age allowed us to observe a significantly lower weight at 12 months of life in the C-section-delivered infants from the highest tertile. Univariate and multivariate models pointed out associations between the levels of some fecal microorganisms at 1 month of age and weight gain at 6 and 12 months. Interestingly, these associations were different in vaginally and C-section-delivered babies. A significant direct association between Staphylococcus and weight gain at 1 month of life was observed in vaginally delivered babies, whereas in C-section-delivered infants, lower Bacteroides levels at 1 month were associated with higher later weight gain (at 6 and 12 months). Our results indicate an association between the gut microbiota and weight gain in early life and highlight potential microbial predictors for later weight gain.

Abstract Background Disturbances in the early establishment of the intestinal microbiota may produce important implications for the infant’s health and for the risk of disease later on. Different perinatal conditions may be affecting the development of the gut microbiota. Some of them, such as delivery mode or feeding habits, have been extensively assessed whereas others remain to be studied, being critical to identify their impact on the microbiota and, if any, to minimize it. Antibiotics are among the drugs most frequently used in early life, the use of intrapartum antimicrobial prophylaxis (IAP), present in over 30% of deliveries, being the most frequent source of exposure. However, our knowledge on the effects of IAP on the microbiota establishment is still limited. The aim of the present work was to evaluate the impact of IAP investigating a cohort of 40 full-term vaginally delivered infants born after an uncomplicated pregnancy, 18 of which were born from mothers receiving IAP. Results Fecal samples were collected at 2, 10, 30, and 90 days of age. We analyzed the composition of the fecal microbiota during the first 3 months of life by 16S rRNA gene sequencing and quantified fecal short chain fatty acids by gas chromatography. The presence of genes for resistance to antibiotics was determined by PCR in the samples from 1-month-old infants. Our results showed an altered pattern of intestinal microbiota establishment in IAP infants during the first weeks of life, with lower relative proportions of Actinobacteria and Bacteroidetes and increased of Preoteobacteria and Firmicutes. A delay in the increase on the levels of acetate was observed in IAP infants. The analyses of specific antibiotic resistance genes showed a higher occurrence of some β-lactamase coding genes in infants whose mothers received IAP. Conclusions Our results indicate an effect of IAP on the establishing early microbiota during the first months of life, which represent a key moment for the development of the microbiota-induced host homeostasis. Understanding the impact of IAP in the gut microbiota development is essential for developing treatments to minimize it, favoring a proper gut microbiota development in IAP-exposed neonates.

Objetivo: Implantar el Proceso asistencial integrado del paciente crónico complejo (PAIPCC) en nuestra Comunidad. Metodología: Enmarcado en la estrategia de Atención a Pacientes con enfermedades crónicas de nuestra Comunidad se elaboró el PAIPCC que define qué intervenciones y cuidados tendrán que recibir los pacientes con mayor fragilidad y carga de enfermedad, de acuerdo a sus necesidades y preferencias y las de sus cuidadores. Una vez desarrollado el PAIPCC, se establece la estrategia de implantación. En 2016, se crea un grupo directivo central con el objetivo de liderar su puesta en marcha y desarrollo en toda la Comunidad. Se planificó una implantación controlada que se inicia en ámbitos locales seleccionados (3 hospitales y 8 centros de salud (CS)) destinada a revisar y mejorar el proceso, así como a definir el impacto esperado previo a implantarlo en toda la Comunidad. Posteriormente se constituyeron los grupos directores locales (GDL), uno por cada hospital con sus CS de referencia, que junto con profesionales de la Subdirección General de Continuidad Asistencial (SGCA) y liderados por el Director de Continuidad Asistencial, están compuestos por profesionales de la Dirección Asistencial de Atención Primaria (AP), lideres clínicos (médico y enfermera) de AP, especialista de referencia y enfermera de continuidad asistencial de atención hospitalaria (AH), farmacéutico y trabajadora social de AP y AH, profesionales de sistemas de información y de la Unidad de admisión. Se definieron las funciones de los GDL: Adaptación del PAIPCC a su ámbito de atención (Identificación de referentes, canales de comunicación y adaptación de los circuitos). Apoyo a la difusión y formación local. Impulso y seguimiento de la implantación, identificación de áreas de mejora. Se desarrolló un plan docente con formación específica para los GDL y los profesionales implicados. En el 2017, se planificó la difusión y se implantó en el resto de CS y Hospitales de la Comunidad siguiendo el modelo inicial; un GDL por cada ámbito, con las funciones definidas, un plan formativo establecido con la participación de líderes clínicos, coordinado desde la SGCA. Toda esta planificación ha precisado del desarrollo de herramientas informáticas para la identificación de estos pacientes, de la elaboración de protocolos que permitan el registro de la valoración y seguimiento de los pacientes, de un plan docente dirigido a profesionales y un cuadro de mandos para el seguimiento y mejora. Se han incluido objetivos de su implantación en los contratos de gestión. El PAI PCC se ha implantado en 26 hospitales y 266 centros de salud. En la actualidad, se han incluido en este proceso a 15.995 pacientes. Conclusiones: Para la implantación del PAI PCC ha sido de especial relevancia el liderazgo institucional y el liderazgo clínico. A su vez, se han puesto en marcha facilitadores como la creación de equipos de trabajo que lideren la implantación con la participación de todas las partes implicadas, con un cronograma y unas funciones claramente definidas, el desarrollo de herramientas de apoyo en los sistemas de información, un cuadro de mandos y la elaboración de un plan formativo.

Ensuring the nutritional demands of preterm (PT) infants during complementary feeding could contribute significantly to the infants’ long-term health and development. However, the dietary guidelines for complementary feeding in PT are scarce. Thus, describing dietary intake and identifying nutritional targets for these infants could be of great interest. The aim of this study is to assess the food intake and anthropometric parameters in a Mediterranean infant cohort from 6 to 24 months and to identify nutritional targets especially focused on late preterm infants. This is a longitudinal prospective study analyzing information from administered questionnaires about general characteristics and food frequency consumption in 115 infants (20 PT (32 to 36 gestational weeks), 95 full-term (FT)) at 6, 12 and 24 months of age. Results show that the differences in the prevalence of underweight observed in PT infants vs. FT infants are maintained for up to 6 months of age but disappear at 12 and 24 months. The age of inclusion of new foods and the average intake of the main food groups was not different from that of FTs. Although protein intake at 6 months was directly correlated with weight gain and growth in FT, these associations were not observed in PT. At the nutritional level, the low intake of vitamin D in preterm infants is noteworthy. These findings may be useful when designing new intervention strategies for this population group.

The establishment of the gut microbiota poses implications for short and long-term health. Bifidobacterium is an important taxon in early life, being one of the most abundant genera in the infant intestinal microbiota and carrying out key functions for maintaining host-homeostasis. Recent metagenomic studies have shown that different factors, such as gestational age, delivery mode, or feeding habits, affect the gut microbiota establishment at high phylogenetic levels. However, their impact on the specific bifidobacterial populations is not yet well understood. Here we studied the impact of these factors on the different Bifidobacterium species and subspecies at both the quantitative and qualitative levels. Fecal samples were taken from 85 neonates at 2, 10, 30, 90 days of life, and the relative proportions of the different bifidobacterial populations were assessed by 16S rRNA–23S rRNA internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region sequencing. Absolute levels of the main species were determined by q-PCR. Our results showed that the bifidobacterial population establishment is affected by gestational age, delivery mode, and infant feeding, as it is evidenced by qualitative and quantitative changes. These data underline the need for understanding the impact of perinatal factors on the gut microbiota also at low taxonomic levels, especially in the case of relevant microbial populations such as Bifidobacterium. The data obtained provide indications for the selection of the species best suited for the development of bifidobacteria-based products for different groups of neonates and will help to develop rational strategies for favoring a healthy early microbiota development when this process is challenged.

The management of Helicobacter pylori infection has to rely on previous local effectiveness due to the geographical variability of antibiotic resistance. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of first and second-line H. pylori treatment in Spain, where the empirical prescription is recommended. A multicentre prospective non-interventional registry of the clinical practice of European gastroenterologists concerning H. pylori infection (Hp-EuReg) was developed, including patients from 2013 until June 2019. Effectiveness was evaluated descriptively and through a multivariate analysis concerning age, gender, presence of ulcer, proton-pump inhibitor (PPI) dose, therapy duration and compliance. Overall, 53 Spanish hospitals were included, and 10,267 patients received a first-line therapy. The best results were obtained with the 10-day bismuth single-capsule therapy (95% cure rate by intention-to-treat) and with both the 14-day bismuth-clarithromycin quadruple (PPI-bismuth-clarithromycin-amoxicillin, 91%) and the 14-day non-bismuth quadruple concomitant (PPI-clarithromycin-amoxicillin-metronidazole, 92%) therapies. Second-line therapies were prescribed to 2448 patients, with most-effective therapies being the triple quinolone (PPI-amoxicillin-levofloxacin/moxifloxacin) and the bismuth-levofloxacin quadruple schemes (PPI-bismuth-levofloxacin-amoxicillin) prescribed for 14 days (92%, 89% and 90% effectiveness, respectively), and the bismuth single-capsule (10 days, 88.5%). Compliance, longer duration and higher acid inhibition were associated with higher effectiveness. “Optimized” H. pylori therapies achieve over 90% success in Spain.

Correct establishment of the gut microbiome is compromised in premature babies, with Bifidobacterium being one of the most affected genera. Prematurity often entails the inability to successfully breastfeed, therefore requiring the implementation of other feeding modes; breast milk expression from a donor mother is the recommended option when their own mother’s milk is not available. Some studies showed different gut microbial profiles in premature infants fed with breast milk and donor human milk, however, it is not known how this affects the species composition of the genus Bifidobacterium. The objective of this study was to assess the effect of donated human milk on shaping the gut bifidobacterial populations of premature babies during the first three months of life. We analyzed the gut bifidobacterial communities of 42 premature babies fed with human donor milk or own-mother milk by the 16S rRNA–23S rRNA internal transcriber spaces (ITS) region sequencing and q-PCR. Moreover, metabolic activity was assessed by gas chromatography. We observed a specific bifidobacterial profile based on feeding type, with higher bifidobacterial diversity in the human donor milk group. Differences in specific Bifidobacterium species composition may contribute to the development of specific new strategies or treatments aimed at mimicking the impact of own-mother milk feeding in neonatal units.

The incidence of metabolic syndrome (MetS) is increasing worldwide which makes necessary the finding of new strategies to treat and/or prevent it. The aim of this study was to analyze the possible beneficial effects of a carob fruit extract (CSAT+®) on the cardiometabolic alterations associated with MetS in mice. 16-week-old C57BL/6J male mice were fed for 26 weeks either with a standard diet (chow) or with a diet rich in fats and sugars (HFHS), supplemented or not with 4.8% of CSAT+®. CSAT+® supplementation reduced blood glucose, Homeostatic Model Assessment of Insulin Resistance (HOMA-IR) and circulating levels of total cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol (LDL-c), insulin, and interleukin-6 (IL-6). In adipose tissue and skeletal muscle, CSAT+® prevented MetS-induced insulin resistance, reduced macrophage infiltration and the expression of pro-inflammatory markers, and up-regulated the mRNA levels of antioxidant markers. Supplementation with CSAT+® prevented MetS-induced hypertension and decreased the vascular response of aortic rings to angiotensin II (AngII). Moreover, treatment with CSAT+® attenuated endothelial dysfunction and increased vascular sensitivity to insulin. In the heart, CSAT+® supplementation reduced cardiomyocyte apoptosis and prevented ischemia-reperfusion-induced decrease in cardiac contractility. The beneficial effects at the cardiovascular level were associated with a lower expression of pro-inflammatory and pro-oxidant markers in aortic and cardiac tissues.

Staphylococcus aureus bacteremia (SAB) is associated with high morbidity and mortality, which varies depending on the source of infection. Nevertheless, the global molecular epidemiology of SAB and its possible association with specific virulence factors remains unclear. Using DNA microarrays, a total of 833 S. aureus strains (785 SAB and 48 colonizing strains) collected in Spain over a period of 15 years (2002–2017) were characterized to determine clonal complex (CC), agr type and repertoire of resistance and virulence genes in order to provide an epidemiological overview of CCs causing bloodstream infection, and to analyze possible associations between virulence genes and the most common sources of bacteremia. The results were also analyzed by acquisition (healthcare-associated [HA] and community-acquired [CA]), methicillin-resistant (MRSA) and methicillin-susceptible (MSSA) strains, and patient age (adults vs. children). Our results revealed high clonal diversity among SAB strains with up to 28 different CCs. The most prevalent CCs were CC5 (30.8%), CC30 (20.3%), CC45 (8.3%), CC8 (8.4%), CC15 (7.5%), and CC22 (5.9%), which together accounted for 80% of all cases. A higher proportion of CC5 was found among HA strains than CA strains (35.6 vs. 20.2%, p < 0.001). CC5 was associated with methicillin resistance (14.7 vs. 79.4%, p < 0.001), whereas CC30, CC45, and CC15 were correlated with MSSA strains (p < 0.001). Pathogen-related molecular markers significantly associated with a specific source of bacteremia included the presence of sea, undisrupted hlb and isaB genes with catheter-related bacteremia; sed, splE, and fib genes with endocarditis; undisrupted hlb with skin and soft tissue infections; and finally, CC5, msrA resistance gene and hla gene with osteoarticular source. Our study suggests an association between S. aureus genotype and place of acquisition, methicillin resistance and sources of bloodstream infection, and provides a valuable starting point for further research insights into intrinsic pathogenic mechanisms involved in the development of SAB.

The multimeric analysis (MA) of plasma von Willebrand factor (VWF) evaluates structural integrity and helps in the diagnosis of von Willebrand disease (VWD). This assay is a matter of controversy, being considered by some investigators cumbersome and only slightly informative. The centralised study 'Molecular and Clinical Profile of von Willebrand Disease in Spain (PCM-EVW-ES)' has been carried out by including the phenotypic assessment and the genetic analysis by next generation sequencing (NGS) of the VWF gene (VWF). The aim of the present study was to evaluate the role of MA to the diagnosis of these patients and their potential discrepancies. Two hundred and seventy out of 480 patients centrally diagnosed with VWD had normal multimers, 168 had abnormal multimers and 42 a total absence of multimers. VWF MA was of great significance in the diagnosis of 83 patients (17.3%), it was also of help in the diagnosis achieved in 365 additional patients (76%) and was not informative in 32 cases (6.7%). With regard to discrepancies, 110 out of 480 (23%) patients centrally diagnosed with VWD presented some kind of discordance between VWF:RCo/VWF:Ag and/or VWF:CB/VWF:Ag ratios, multimeric study and/or genetic results. The VWF MA was key in the presence of novel mutations as well as in cases with phenotypic discrepancies. A comparison between the contribution of MA and VWF:CB showed a clearly higher contribution of the former in the diagnostic process. These data seem to reinforce the relevance of the VWF MA in VWD diagnosis, despite all its limitations.

Staphylococcus aureus is a major cause of bacteremia and, even with appropriate clinical management, causes high morbidity, and mortality due to its involvement in endovascular complications and metastatic infections. Through different pathogenic in vivo and in vitro models we investigated the behavior of S. aureus most relevant clonal complexes (CCs) causing endovascular complications. We analyzed 14 S. aureus strains representing CC5, CC8, CC15, CC30, and CC45 that caused endovascular complications, including methicillin susceptible and resistant isolates and strains with different functionality of the agr global regulator. Their adherence to collagen, interaction with the endothelium, resistance to immune attack, capacity to form biofilm and virulence in the Galleria mellonella model were analyzed. CC30 and CC45 showed greater adhesion to collagen and CC8 showed a trend towards higher rate of intracellular persistence in endothelial cells. All CCs exhibited similar tolerance to neutrophil antimicrobial peptide hNP-1 and were capable of forming biofilms under static conditions. The virulence assay in the G. mellonella model demonstrated that CC15 and CC30 were the most and least virulent, respectively. The analysis of the genomic sequences of the most relevant virulence genes identified some CC15 specific gene patterns (absence of enterotoxins and sak gene) and variants (mainly in leucocidins and proteases), but did not reveal any gene or variant that could be responsible for the increased virulence detected for CC15 strains. Even though all the CCs were capable of causing endovascular complications, our results showed that different CCs are likely to produce these complications through different mechanisms which, if confirmed in more sophisticated models, would indicate the need to more specific management and therapeutic approaches.

In this protocol plant tissue is stained with trypan blue dye allowing the researcher to visualize cell death. Specifically this method avoids the use of the carcinogen compound chloral hydrate, making this classical method of staining safer and faster than ever. The protocol is applied specifically to detect cell death on Arabidopsis leaves during the course of infection with necrotrophic fungus Botrytis cinerea.

Introducción y objetivos: las úlceras por presión (UPP) representan una carga sobreagregada a la enfermedad y una menor calidad de vida para el paciente y para los que están a su cuidado. Su presencia está considerada, además, un indicador negativo de calidad asistencial. El presente trabajo tiene como objetivo general conocer la situación en cuanto a prevalencia de las UPP en la Fundación Instituto San José (FISJ), y como objetivos secundarios averiguar la distribución de las UPP entre los distintos programas del centro; conocer el grado de severidad de las lesiones tanto externas como iatrogénicas; saber el tiempo medio de curación de las UPP en la FISJ. Método: estudio descriptivo retrospectivo longitudinal, tomando como población de estudio los pacientes ingresados en la FISJ en 2011. Resultados: los resultados demuestran que nuestro centro sanitario presentó en el año 2011 una prevalencia media de pacientes con UPP de 15,96%. En cuanto a la prevalencia media de UPP externas, esta fue de 20,53% y la de UPP iatrogénicas de 5,19%. Fueron atendidas 935 UPP en las diferentes áreas de atención, de los cuales, 32% de estadio I; 37% de estadio II; 17% de estadio III y 14% de estadio IV. Conclusión: Aunque hemos obtenido mejoras en los cuidados de prevención y curación de UPP, seguiremos trabajando en aras de mejorar las medidas de prevención, centrados en disminuir o eliminar los factores de riesgo en la aparición de UPP en la FISJ.Introduction and objectives: pressure ulcers (PU) represent an overload and a reduced quality of life for the patient and their caregivers. The presence of pressure ulcers is also considered a negative indicator to quality of care. The main objective of the current study is: to know the prevalence of pressure ulcers in the Fundación Instituto San Jose (FISJ) and the secondary objectives: to determine the distribution of PU among the various programs of the hospital; to identify the degree of severity to external and iatrogenic PU and finally to know the average time of healing to PU in the FISJ. Material and methods: a retrospective, longitudinal, descriptive study, the population to study was patients admitted in the FISJ during January 1 to December 31, 2011. Results: the results show that our hospital presented in 2011, an average prevalence of patients with PU of 15.96%. The prevalence of external PU was 20.53% and 5.19% to iatrogenic PU. In the hospital were treated 935 PU in different areas of attention to which 32% stage 1, 37% stage II, 17% stage III and 14% stage IV. Conclusions: although we have obtained improvements in care prevention and treatment of pressure ulcers, we will continue working in order to improve prevention measures focused on reducing or eliminating risk factors for pressure ulcers in FISJ.

Plants have developed versatile strategies to deal with the great variety of challenging conditions they are exposed to. Among them, the regulation of translation is a common target to finely modulate gene expression both under biotic and abiotic stress situations. Upon environmental challenges, translation is regulated to reduce the consumption of energy and to selectively synthesize proteins involved in the proper establishment of the tolerance response. In the case of viral infections, the situation is more complex, as viruses have evolved unconventional mechanisms to regulate translation in order to ensure the production of the viral encoded proteins using the plant machinery. Although the final purpose is different, in some cases, both plants and viruses share common mechanisms to modulate translation. In others, the mechanisms leading to the control of translation are viral- or stress-specific. In this paper, we review the different mechanisms involved in the regulation of translation initiation under virus infection and under environmental stress in plants. In addition, we describe the main features within the viral RNAs and the cellular mRNAs that promote their selective translation in plants undergoing biotic and abiotic stress situations.

Antithrombin is a crucial anticoagulant serpin whose even moderate deficiency significantly increases the risk of thrombosis. Most cases with antithrombin deficiency carried genetic defects affecting exons or flanking regions of SERPINC1.We aimed to identify regulatory mutations inSERPINC1 through sequencing the promoter, intron 1 and 2 of this gene in 23 patients with antithrombin deficiency but without known genetic defects. Three cases with moderate antithrombin deficiency (63-78%) carried potential regulatory mutations. One located 200 bp before the initiation ATG and two in intron 1. These mutations disrupted two out of five potential vitamin D receptor elements (VDRE) identified in SERPINC1 with different software. One genetic defect, c.42-1060_-1057dupTTGA, was a new low prevalent polymorphism (MAF: 0.01) with functional consequences on plasma antithrombin levels. The relevance of the vitamin D pathway on the regulation of SERPINC1 was confirmed in a cell model. Incubation of HepG2 with paricalcitol, a vitamin D analog, increased dose-dependently the levels of SERPINC1transcripts and antithrombin released to the conditioned medium. This study shows further evidence of the transcriptional regulation of SERPINC1 by vitamin D and first describes the functional and pathological relevance of mutations affecting VDRE of this gene. Our study opens new perspectives in the search of new genetic defects involved in antithrombin deficiency and the risk of thrombosis as well as in the design of new antithrombotic treatments.

Cyanobacteria are a diverse group of Gram-negative bacteria that produce an array of secondary compounds with selective bioactivity against vertebrates, invertebrates, plants, microalgae, fungi, bacteria, viruses and cell lines. The aim of this study was to assess the toxic effects of aqueous, methanolic and hexane crude extracts of benthic and picoplanktonic cyanobacteria isolated from estuarine environments, towards the nauplii of the brine shrimp Artemia salina and embryos of the sea urchin Paracentrotus lividus. The A. salina lethality test was used as a frontline screen and then complemented by the more specific sea urchin embryo-larval assay. Eighteen cyanobacterial isolates, belonging to the genera Cyanobium, Leptolyngbya, Microcoleus, Phormidium, Nodularia, Nostoc and Synechocystis, were tested. Aqueous extracts of cyanobacteria strains showed potent toxicity against A. salina, whereas in P. lividus, methanolic and aqueous extracts showed embryo toxicity, with clear effects on development during early stages. The results suggest that the brackishwater cyanobacteria are producers of bioactive compounds with toxicological effects that may interfere with the dynamics of invertebrate populations.

In this work, multivariate and numeric methods were used to integrate the chemical and ecotoxicological data obtained for the sediments from the Santos Estuarine System, and for the vicinity of the discharges of the Submarine Sewage Outfall of Santos, in order to establish more accurately the environmental risks, identify the priority areas and thus provide guidance to control the programs and public policies. For both the datasets, the concentrations which exceeded numeric sediment guidelines tended to be associated to toxicity. For the estuary, this trend was corroborated by the correlations between the toxicity and Cu and PAHs levels, whereas for the sewage outfall region, this was observed through the correlation between the toxicity and Hg contents. Ratio-to-mean values were calculated for each sample, in order to rank them according to the toxicity and contamination. Cluster analyses confirmed the ranking results. For the estuary, three categories of sediments were established: stations SSV-2, SSV-3 and SSV-4 were under major risks, followed by SSV-6. Stations SSV-1 and SSV-5 were not altered. Concerning to the sewage outfall, stations 1 and 2 presented better quality, whereas station 5 seemed to be under risk, followed by stations 3 and 4, which exhibited some signs of alteration.O presente trabalho utilizou métodos multivariados e matemáticos para integrar dados químicos e ecotoxicológicos obtidos para o Sistema Estuarino de Santos e para a região próxima à zona de lançamento do emissário submarino de Santos, com a finalidade de estabelecer com maior exatidão os riscos ambientais, e assim identificar áreas prioritárias e orientar programas de controle e políticas públicas. Para ambos os conjuntos de dados, as violações de valores numéricos de qualidade de sedimento tenderam a estar associadas com a ocorrência de toxicidade. Para o estuário, essa tendência foi corroborada pelas correlações entre a toxicidade e as concentrações de HPAs e Cu, enquanto para a região do emissário, pela correlação entre toxicidade e conteúdo de mercúrio no sedimento. Valores normalizados em relação às medias foram calculados para cada amostra, permitindo classificá-las de acordo com a toxicidade e a contaminação. As análises de agrupamento confirmaram os resultados das classificações. Para os dados de sistema estuarino, houve a separação das amostras em três categorias: as estações SSV-2, SSV-3 e SSV-4 encontram-se sob maior risco, seguidas da estação SSV-6. As estações SSV-1 e SSV-5 demonstraram melhores condições. Já em relação ao emissário, as amostras 1 e 2 apresentaram melhores condições, enquanto a estação 5 pareceu apresentar um maior risco, seguida das estações 3 e 4 que tiveram apenas alguns indícios de alteração.

Sediments represent an important repository of pollutants and a source of contamination for the aquatic food web. Toxicity tests using amphipods as test-organisms have been employed in the assessment of marine and estuarine sediments, together with chemical analyses. The present work aimed to evaluate the quality of sediments from six stations situated in the Santos and São Vicente Estuarine and Harbour System (São Paulo - Brazil) using acute whole sediment toxicity tests with amphipods (Tiburonella viscana) and chemical analyses of metals, PCB's, and PAH's. Other sediment parameters, such as organic carbon and grain size distribution were also analysed. Higher contamination levels were observed in the internal portion of the estuary, where Santos harbour and the industrial zone are located. The toxicity tests showed significant adverse results for most of the samples tested, and the sediments from the internal portion of the estuary presented the highest toxicity. The principal component analyses (PCA) indicated a close relationship between sediment contamination and toxicity. Positive correlation of these factors in the samples studied was used to establish the ranges of the chemical concentrations associated with adverse effects. Such ranges allowed the estimation of preliminary effect threshold values for sediment contamination, by means of multivariate analysis. These suggested values are: Cu, 69.0; Pb, 17.4; Zn, 73.3 (mg.kg-1); PAHs, 0.5 (mg.kg-1) and PCBs, 0.1 (µg.kg-1).O sedimento representa um importante depósito de contaminantes e uma fonte de contaminação para a cadeia alimentar aquática. Testes de toxicidade usando anfípodos como organismos-teste são empregados para avaliar sedimentos marinhos e estuarinos, juntamente com análises químicas. O presente trabalho tem como objetivo avaliar a qualidade de sedimentos de seis estações situadas no Sistema Estuarino e Portuário de Santos e São Vicente (São Paulo-Brasil), usando testes de toxicidade aguda com sedimento com anfípodos (Tiburonella viscana) e análises químicas de metais, PCB, e PAH. Outros parâmetros do sedimento foram analisados, como carbono orgânico e granulometria. Foram observados níveis de contaminação mais altos na porção interna do estuário onde se localiza o Porto de Santos e a zona industrial. Os testes de toxicidade mostraram resultados adversos significantes para a maioria das amostras testadas, e os sedimentos da porção interna do estuário apresentaram toxicidade mais alta. As análises de componentes principais indicaram uma relação forte entre contaminação do sedimento e toxicidade. As correlações positivas destes fatores nas amostras estudadas foram usadas para estabelecer os pesos das concentrações químicas que estão associadas com os efeitos adversos. Tais análises permitiram estimar valores limiares de efeito para a contaminação de sedimento através de análises multivariadas, identificando os contaminantes associados com o efeito biológico. Estes valores sugeridos são: Cu, 69.0; Pb, 17.4; Zn, 73.3(mg.kg-1); PAHs, 0.5 (mg.kg-1) e PCBs, 0.1 (µg.kg-1).

Uno de los órdenes normativos que con más frecuencia se ha reproducido desde los inicios de la sociedad moderna, es el de la matriz heterosexual: todo hombre es masculino y heterosexual, mientras que toda mujer es femenina y heterosexual. Es éste un orden que dibuja con perfecta simetría la normalidad de un continuo basado en la tricotomía sexo-género-deseo. Este texto pretende poner a prueba ese orden mediante el uso de un artificio que nos ayudará a juzgarlo: representando el juicio de una persona acusada de intentar escaparse de la matriz, se invertirá el proceso, y el orden acusador pasará a ser el centro de una mirada de-constructiva. Las identidades transgenéricas se convertirán aquí, en esas disposiciones capaces de desbaratar la armónica normatividad del orden sexo-género-deseo.

El objetivo de este texto es analizar circunstancias determinantes en el trabajo de campo, que tienen que ver con las actitudes que el antropólogo mantiene con el grupo que estudia, prestando atención a algunos de los numerosos aspectos emocionales que comprende su vivencia. Estas reflexiones surgen del trabajo de campo que realicé en la isla de Bioko, en Guinea Ecuatorial, entre los años 1988 y 1992.

The energy production processes from fossil fuels represent the first anthropogenic source of mercury emissions in Europe and the second in the world. Among the different possibilities that can be posed to reduce these emissions, this work focuses on the use of regenerable sorbents based on gold nanoparticles dispersed on activated carbon foam. The use of regenerable sorbents would not only allow the objective of reducing mercury emissions, but also avoiding the generation of new toxic wastes. The results showed a retention efficiency of 100% and a retention capacity close to 600 µg·g−1 over several cycles of regeneration. Moreover, acid gases did not poison the support. It was observed that mercury capture in this simulated oxy-combustion atmosphere was a consequence of two mechanisms: (1) the amalgamation of elemental mercury and elemental gold and (2) the oxidation of elemental mercury in the presence of HCl, with the subsequent retention of the oxidized mercury on the surface of the activated carbon foam. The nanodispersion of gold on such supports involves a high initial investment. However, this would be counterbalanced by the remarkable regeneration capacity of the sorbent and the possibility of recovering all the materials used.

To analyze the long-term effects of early overfeeding on the heart and coronary circulation, the effect of ischemia-reperfusion (I/R) and the role of the renin-angiotensin system (RAS) was studied in isolated hearts from control and overfed rats during lactation. On the day of birth litters were adjusted to twelve pups per mother (controls) or to three pups per mother (overfed). At 5 months of age, the rats from reduced litters showed higher body weight and body fat than the controls. The hearts from these rats were perfused in a Langendorff system and subjected to 30 min of ischemia followed by 15 min of reperfusion (I/R). The myocardial contractility (dP/dt) and the coronary vasoconstriction to angiotensin II were lower, and the expression of the apoptotic marker was higher, in the hearts from overfed rats compared to controls. I/R reduced the myocardial contractily, the coronary vasoconstriction to angiotensin II and the vasodilatation to bradykinin, and increased the expression of (pro)renin receptor and of apoptotic and antiapoptotic markers, in both experimental groups. I/R also increased the expression of angiotensinogen in control but not in overfed rats. In summary, the results of this study suggest that early overnutrition induces reduced activity of the RAS and impairment of myocardial and coronary function in adult life, due to increased apoptosis. Ischemia-reperfusion produced myocardial and coronary impairment and apoptosis, which may be related to activation of RAS in control but not in overfed rats, and there may be protective mechanisms in both experimental groups.

This text recounts the transition that Bioko political structure underwent upon entering into contact, first, with different African populations and, later, with the Spanish colonial government, at the end of the 19th century. The political process I analyze unfolded in a very short but very intense time: in just a few years, after numerous failed attempts, the transition from a decentralized government to a consolidated centralized chiefdom was made, culminating in the formation of a kingdom. This period ran parallel to the incipient advance of the colonization process and ended during this same reign with the death of the monarch.

The HACEK organisms (Haemophilus species, Aggregatibacter species, Cardiobacterium hominis, Eikenella corrodens, and Kingella species) are rare causes of infective endocarditis (IE). The objective of this study is to describe the clinical characteristics and outcomes of patients with HACEK endocarditis (HE) in a large multi-national cohort. Patients hospitalized with definite or possible infective endocarditis by the International Collaboration on Endocarditis Prospective Cohort Study in 64 hospitals from 28 countries were included and characteristics of HE patients compared with IE due to other pathogens. Heat stress is one of the most prominent and deleterious environmental threats affecting plant growth and development. Upon high temperatures, plants launch specialized gene expression programs that promote stress protection and survival. These programs involve global and specific changes at the transcriptional and translational levels. However, the coordination of these processes and their specific role in the establishment of the heat stress response is not fully elucidated. We have carried out a genome-wide analysis to monitor the changes in the translation efficiency of individual mRNAs of Arabidopsis thaliana seedlings after the exposure to a heat shock stress. Our results demonstrate that translation exerts a wide but dual regulation of gene expression. For the majority of mRNAs, translation is severely repressed, causing a decreased of 50% in the association of the bulk of mRNAs to polysomes. However, some relevant mRNAs involved in different aspects of homeostasis maintenance follow a differential pattern of translation. Sequence analyses of the differentially translated mRNAs unravels that some features, such as the 5'UTR G+C content and the cDNA length, may take part in the discrimination mechanisms for mRNA polysome loading. Among the differentially translated genes, master regulators of the stress response stand out, highlighting the main role of translation in the early establishment of the physiological response of plants to elevated temperatures.

BACKGROUND: Obesity during childhood has dramatically increased worldwide in the last decades. Environmental factors acting early in life, including nutrition, play an important role in the pathogenesis of obesity and cardiovascular diseases in adulthood. AIMS: To analyze the effects of early overfeeding on the heart and coronary circulation, the effect of ischemia-reperfusion (I/R) and the role of the renin-angiotensin system (RAS) were studied in isolated hearts from control and overfed rats during lactation. METHODS AND RESULTS: On the day of birth litters were adjusted to twelve pups per mother (control) or to three pups per mother (overfed). At weaning (21 days) the rats were killed and the heart perfused in a Langendorff system and subjected to 30 min of ischemia followed by 15 min of reperfusion. The contractility (left developed intraventricular pressure) was lower in the hearts from overfed rats, and was reduced by I/R in hearts from control but not from overfed rats. I/R also reduced the coronary vasoconstriction to angiotensin II more in hearts from control than from overfed rats, and the vasodilatation to bradykinin similarly in both experimental groups. The expression of both angiotensin AGTRa and AGTR2 receptors was increased in the myocardium of overfed rats, and I/R increased the expression of both receptors in control rats but reduced it in overfed rats. The expression of apoptotic and antiapoptotic markers was increased in hearts of overfed rats compared with control, and further increased by I/R. CONCLUSIONS: These results suggest that both overfeeding and I/R impair cardiac and coronary function due, at least in part, to activation of the angiotensin pathway. However, overfeeding may reduce the impairment of ventricular contractility by I/R.
