This document is an annotated bibliography of recommended print materials for English-speaking adults reading at the seventh grade level or below. (Sixty percent of the titles are at fifth grade level or below). The titles were selected for their broad appeal to the average adult new reader. In the selection, special consideration was given to materials in five subject areas identified by the Adult Performance Level (APL) Project as ones in which it is necessary for adults to be knowledgeable in order to function effectively (consumer economics, occupational knowledge, community resources, health, government and law). Attention was also paid to materials that teach the four basic skills identified by APL (communication skills, computation, problem solving, and skills in interpersonal relationships). Entries in the bibliography are arranged alphabetically by title within the following broad subject categories: skills (reading, writing, mathematics); knowledge (science; homemaking and consumerism; health, safety, and well-being; jobs; life in the United States; and other times/other places); leisure reading (stories of today; mystery, adventure, and romance; science fiction; hobbies, sports, and entertainment; fantastic facts and famous people; poetry, plays, and photography); and materials to aid the tutor in teaching reading to adults. Some titles concentrate on Ohio and Cleveland where the bibliography was compiled. (KC)

Entries for materials recommended in the bibliography are arranged alphabetically by title within the following broad subject categories: (1) skills (reading and writing, mathematics); (2) knowledge (science, homemaking and consumerism; health, safety, and well-being; jobs; life in the United States; and other times, other places); (3) leisure reading (stories of today; mystery, suspense, and adventure; science fiction and stories of the supernatural; westerns, gothics, and historicals; the interesting, the unusual, and the unexplained; and biography); and (4) for the tutor (materials to aid in the teaching of reading to adults). For each entry, information is given on title, author, publisher, edition, date of publication or copyright, last numbered page of book, net price for single copy, ISBN number, series, print components of interest to libraries--such as workbooks or teacher's guides, comments, and reading level as determined by the Gunning Fog Index. Publishers' addresses and series, title, and subject indexes are provided. Appendixes to the bibliography include a core collection of books for new adult readers for a beginning library collection and a selected list of readings on adult literacy, library service to the adult new reader, and the selection of adult interest/low reading level materials. This annotated bibliography contains descriptions of instructional and supplemental reading materials that are recommended for English-speaking adults readinq at the seventh grade level or below. Covered in the first section are instructional materials dealing with the following topics: reading and writing; mathematics; science; homemaking and consumerism; health, safety, and well-being; jobs; life in the United States; and other times and places. Descriptions are also provided of leisure reading selections on a variety of topics, including stories of today; mystery, adventure, and romance; science fiction, the supernatural, and the unexplained; hobbies, sports, and entertainment; famous people and fantastic facts; and poetry, plays, and periodicals. Also mentioned are selections for use by reading tutors. Addresses of publishers, comments on series and a series index, and a title index are included. Appended to the bibliography are lists of recommended collections and suggested readings. (MN)
