$^{15}$N($\alpha$,$\gamma$)$^{19}$F is believed to be the primary means of stellar nucleosynthesis of fluorine. Here we present the use of a single-fluid bubble chamber to measure the cross section of the time-inverse photo-dissociation reaction. The method benefits from a luminosity increase of several orders of magnitude due to the use of a thicker liquid target -- when compared to thin films or gas targets -- and from the reciprocity theorem. We discuss the results of an experiment at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility, where the cross section of the photodisintegration process $^{19}$F($\gamma$, $\alpha$)$^{15}$N was measured by bombarding a superheated fluid of C$_3$F$_8$ with bremsstrahlung $\gamma$-rays produced by impinging a 4 - 5.5 MeV electron beam on a Cu radiator. From the photodissociation yield the cross section was extracted by performing a convolution with a Monte Carlo-generated $\gamma$-ray beam spectrum. The measurement produced a cross section that was then time inverted using the reciprocity theorem. The cross section for the $^{15}$N($\alpha$,$\gamma$)$^{19}$F reaction was determined down to a value in the range of hundreds of picobarns. With further improvements of the experimental setup the technique could potentially push cross section measurements down to the single picobarn range., Comment: Corrected Typos. ATHENA has been designed as a general purpose detector capable of delivering the full scientific scope of the Electron-Ion Collider. Careful technology choices provide fine tracking and momentum resolution, high performance electromagnetic and hadronic calorimetry, hadron identification over a wide kinematic range, and near-complete hermeticity. This article describes the detector design and its expected performance in the most relevant physics channels. It includes an evaluation of detector technology choices, the technical challenges to realizing the detector and the R&D required to meet those challenges.

We report the first precise measurement of a $\beta$-recoil correlation from a radioactive noble gas ($^6{\rm He}$) confined via a magneto-optical trap. The measurement is motivated by the search for exotic tensor-type contributions to the charged weak current. Interpreted as tensor currents with right-handed neutrinos, the measurements yield: $|C_T/C_A|^2\le 0.022$ (90\% C.L.). On the other hand, for left-handed neutrinos the limits are $0.007< C_T/C_A <0.111$~(90\%\ C.L.). The sensitivity of the present measurement is mainly limited by experimental uncertainties in determining the time response properties and the distance between the atom cloud and the micro-channel plate used for recoil ion detection.

We present an experimental and theoretical study of the absorption and emission spectra of Yb atoms in a solid Ne matrix at a resolution of 0.025 nm. Five absorption bands were identified as due to transitions from the $4f^{14}5d^06s^2\ ^1\!S_0$ ground state configuration to $4f^{14}5d^06s6p$ and $4f^{13}5d^16s^2$ configurations. The two lowest energy bands were assigned to outer-shell transitions to $6s6p\ ^3P_1$ and $^1P_1$ atomic states and displayed the structure of a broad doublet and an asymmetric triplet, respectively. The remaining three higher-frequency bands were assigned to inner-shell transitions to distinct $J=1$ states arising from the $4f^{13}5d^16s^2$ configuration and were highly structured with narrow linewidths. A classical simulation was performed to identify the stability and symmetry of possible trapping sites in the Ne crystal. It showed that the overarching 1+2 structure of the high frequency bands could be predominantly ascribed to crystal field splitting in the axial field of a 10-atom vacancy of $C_{4v}$ symmetry. Their prominent substructures were shown to be manifestations of phonon sidebands associated with the zero-phonon lines on each crystal field state. Unprecedented for a metal-rare gas system, resolution of individual phonon states on an allowed electronic transition was possible under excitation spectroscopy which reflects the semi-quantum nature of solid Ne. In contrast to the absorption spectra, emission spectra produced by steady-state excitation into the $^1P_1$ absorption band consisted of simple, unstructured fluorescence bands., Comment: 13 pages, 9 figures

We report a method for the precision measurement of the oscillator strengths and the branching ratios of the decay channels of the $6d7p$ $^3F_2$ state in $^{226}$Ra. This method exploits a set of metastable states present in Ra, allowing a measurement of the oscillator strengths that does not require knowledge of the number of atoms in the atomic beam. We measure the oscillator strengths and the branching ratios for decays to the $7s6d$ $^3D_1$, $7s6d$ $^3D_2$, and $7s6d$ $^1D_2$ states and constrain the branching ratio to the $7s6d$ $^3D_3$ state to be less than 0.4$\%$ (68$\%$ confidence limit). Optical trapping techniques are an efficient way to probe limited quantities of rare isotopes. In order to achieve the highest possible measurement precision, it is critical to optimize the optical trapping efficiency. This work presents the development of a three-dimensional semi-classical Monte Carlo simulation of the optical trapping process and its application to optimizing the optical trapping efficiency of Radium for use in the search of the permanent electric dipole moment of $^{225}$Ra. The simulation includes an effusive-oven atomic beam source, transverse cooling and Zeeman slowing of an atomic beam, a three-dimensional magneto-optical trap, and additional processes such as collisions with residual gas molecules. We benchmark the simulation against a well-characterized $^{88}$Sr optical trap before applying it to the $^{225}$Ra optical trap. The simulation reproduces the relative gains in optical trapping efficiency measured in both the $^{88}$Sr and $^{225}$Ra optical traps. The measured and simulated values of the overall optical trapping efficiencies for $^{88}$Sr are in agreement; however, they differ by a factor of $30$ for $^{225}$Ra. Studies of several potential imperfections in the apparatus or systematic effects, such as atomic beam source misalignment and laser frequency noise, show only limited effects on the simulated trapping efficiency for $^{225}$Ra. We rule out any one systematic effect as the sole cause of the discrepancy between the simulated and measured $^{225}$Ra optical trapping efficiencies; but, we do expect that a combination of systematic effects contribute to this discrepancy. We report a methodology for measuring 85Kr/Kr isotopic abundances using Atom Trap Trace Analysis (ATTA) that increases sample measurement throughput by over an order of magnitude to 6 samples per 24 hours. The noble gas isotope 85Kr (half-life = 10.7 yr) is a useful tracer for young groundwater in the age range of 5-50 years. ATTA, an efficient and selective laser-based atom counting method, has recently been applied to 85Kr/Kr isotopic abundance measurements, requiring 5-10 microliters of krypton gas at STP extracted from 50-100 L of water. Previously a single such measurement required 48 hours. Our new method demonstrates that we can measure 85Kr/Kr ratios with 3-5% relative uncertainty every 4 hours, on average, with the same sample requirements.

We place a 2.5% limit on the anthropogenic contribution to the modern abundance of 81Kr/Kr in the atmosphere at the 90% confidence level. Due to its simple production and transport in the terrestrial environment, 81Kr (halflife = 230,000 yr) is an ideal tracer for old water and ice with mean residence times in the range of 10^5-10^6 years. In recent years, 81Kr-dating has been made available to the earth science community thanks to the development of Atom Trap Trace Analysis (ATTA), a laser-based atom counting technique. Further upgrades and improvements to the ATTA technique now allow us to demonstrate 81Kr/Kr measurements with relative uncertainties of 1% and place this new limit on anthropogenic 81Kr. As a result of this limit, we have removed a potential systematic constraint for 81Kr-dating.

A method for alignment of a vector magnetometer to a rigidly attached prism is presented. This enables optical comparison of the magnetometer axes to physical surfaces in an apparatus, and thus an absolute determination of the magnetic field direction in space. This is in contrast with more common techniques, which focus on precise determination of the relative angles between magnetometer axes, and so are more suited to measuring differences in the direction of magnetic fields. Here we demonstrate precision better than 500 $\mu$rad on a fluxgate magnetometer, which also gives the coil orthogonality errors to a similar precision. The radioactive radium-225 ($^{225}$Ra) atom is a favorable case to search for a permanent electric dipole moment (EDM). Due to its strong nuclear octupole deformation and large atomic mass, $^{225}$Ra is particularly sensitive to interactions in the nuclear medium that violate both time-reversal symmetry and parity. We have developed a cold-atom technique to study the spin precession of $^{225}$Ra atoms held in an optical dipole trap, and demonstrated the principle of this method by completing the first measurement of its atomic EDM, reaching an upper limit of $|$$d$($^{225}$Ra)$|$ $<$ $5.0\!\times\!10^{-22}$ $e \cdot$cm (95$\%$ confidence).

We report the first experimental determination of the hyperfine quenching rate of the $6s^2\ ^1\!S_0\ (F=1/2) - 6s6p\ ^3\!P_0\ (F=1/2)$ transition in $^{171}$Yb with nuclear spin $I=1/2$. This rate determines the natural linewidth and the Rabi frequency of the clock transition of a Yb optical frequency standard. Our technique involves spectrally resolved fluorescence decay measurements of the lowest lying $^3\!P_{0,1}$ levels of neutral Yb atoms embedded in a solid Ne matrix. The solid Ne provides a simple way to trap a large number of atoms as well as an efficient mechanism for populating $^3\!P_0$. The decay rates in solid Ne are modified by medium effects including the index-of-refraction dependence. We find the $^3\!P_0$ hyperfine quenching rate to be $(4.42\pm0.35)\times10^{-2}\ \mathrm{s}^{-1}$ for free $^{171}$Yb, which agrees with recent ab initio calculations., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

Gas targets are often used at accelerator facilities. A design of high-pressure gas cells that are suitable for hydrogen and helium isotopes at relatively high electron beam currents is presented. In particular, we consider rare gas targets, $^3$H$_2$ and $^3$He. In the design, heat transfer and mechanical integrity of the target cell are emphasized. ANSYS 12 was used for the thermo-mechanical studies of the target cell. Since the ultimate goal in this study was to design a gas target for use at the Jefferson Laboratory (JLab), particular attention is given to the typical operating conditions found there. It is demonstrated that an aluminum alloy cell can meet the required design goals.

We demonstrate a technique for transferring $^{226}$Ra atoms from a 3-dimensional magneto-optical-trap (MOT) into a standing wave optical dipole trap (ODT) in an adjacent chamber. The resulting small trapping volume (120 $\mu$m in diameter) allows for high control of the electric and magnetic fields applied to the atoms. The atoms are first transferred to a traveling-wave optical dipole trap, which is then translated 46 cm to a science chamber. The atoms are subsequently transferred into an orthogonal standing-wave ODT by application of a 1-dimensional MOT along the traveling-wave axis. For each stage, transfer efficiencies exceeding 60% are demonstrated.

Neutral ytterbium atoms embedded in solid neon qualitatively retain the structure of free atoms. Despite the atom-solid interaction, the 6s6p $^3$P$_0$ level is found to remain metastable with its lifetimes determined to be in the range of ten to hundreds of seconds. The atomic population can be almost completely transferred between the ground level and the metastable level via optical excitation and spontaneous decay. The dynamics of this process is examined, and is used to explicitly demonstrate that the transition broadening mechanism is homogeneous.

Atom Trap Trace Analysis (ATTA), a laser-based atom counting method, has been applied to analyze atmospheric Ar-39 (half-life = 269 yr), a cosmogenic isotope with an isotopic abundance of 8x10^-16. In addition to the superior selectivity demonstrated in this work, counting rate and efficiency of ATTA have been improved by two orders of magnitude over prior results. Significant applications of this new analytical capability lie in radioisotope dating of ice and water samples and in the development of dark matter detectors.

The root-mean-square (rms) nuclear charge radius of ^8He, the most neutron-rich of all particle-stable nuclei, has been determined for the first time to be 1.93(3) fm. In addition, the rms charge radius of ^6He was measured to be 2.068(11) fm, in excellent agreement with a previous result. The significant reduction in charge radius from ^6He to ^8He is an indication of the change in the correlations of the excess neutrons and is consistent with the ^8He neutron halo structure. The experiment was based on laser spectroscopy of individual helium atoms cooled and confined in a magneto-optical trap. Charge radii were extracted from the measured isotope shifts with the help of precision atomic theory calculations.

We have demonstrated Zeeman slowing and capture of neutral Ra-225 and Ra-226 atoms in a magneto-optical trap (MOT). The intercombination transition 1S0-3P1 is the only quasi-cycling transition in radium and was used for laser-cooling and trapping. Repumping along the 3D1-1P1 transition extended the lifetime of the trap from milliseconds to seconds. Room-temperature blackbody radiation was demonstrated to provide repumping from the metastable 3P0 level. We measured the isotope shift and hyperfine splittings on the 3D1-1P1 transition with the laser-cooled atoms, and set a limit on the lifetime of the 3D1 level based on the measured blackbody repumping rate. A room-temperature beam of krypton atoms in the metastable 5s[3/2]2 level is demonstrated via an optical excitation method. A Kr-discharge lamp is used to produce VUV photons at 124 nm for the first-step excitation from the ground-level 4p6 1S0 to the 5s[3/2]1 level. An 819 nm Ti:Sapphire laser is used for the second-step excitation from 5s[3/2]1 to 5p[3/2]1, followed by a spontaneous decay to the 5s[3/2]2 metastable level. A metastable atomic beam with an angular flux density of 3 x 10^14 /s/sr is achieved at the total gas flow rate of 0.01 cm^3 STP/s (or 3 x 10^17 atoms/s). The dependences of the flux on the gas flow rate, laser power, and lamp parameters are investigated.

We have performed precision laser spectroscopy on individual 6He (t1/2 = 0.8 s) atoms confined and cooled in a magneto-optical trap, and measured the isotope shift between 6He and 4He to be 43,194.772 +/- 0.056 MHz for the 2 3S1 - 3 3P2 transition. Based on this measurement and atomic theory, the nuclear charge radius of 6He is determined, for the first time in a method independent of nuclear models, to be 2.054 +/- 0.014 fm. The result is compared with the values predicted by a number of nuclear structure calculations, and tests their ability to characterize this loosely bound, halo nucleus.

We report on a theoretical calculation and a new experimental determination of the 1s3p ^3P_J fine structure intervals in atomic ^4He. The values from the theoretical calculation of 8113.730(6) MHz and 658.801(6) MHz for the nu_{01} and nu_{12} intervals, respectively, disagree significantly with previous experimental results. However, the new laser spectroscopic measurement reported here yields values of 8113.714(28) MHz and 658.810(18) MHz for these intervals. These results show an excellent agreement with the theoretical values and resolve the apparent discrepancy between theory and experiment., Comment: 9 pages, 3 figures

Measurements of 81Kr/Kr in deep groundwater from the Nubian Aquifer (Egypt) were performed by a new laser-based atom-counting method. 81Kr ages range from \~2x10^5 to ~1x10^6 yr, correlate with 36Cl/Cl ratios, and are consistent with lateral flow of groundwater from a recharge area near the Uweinat Uplift in SW Egypt. Low delta-2H values of the 81Kr-dated groundwater reveal a recurrent Atlantic moisture source during Pleistocene pluvial periods. These results indicate that the 81Kr method for dating old groundwater is robust and such measurements can now be applied to a wide range of hydrologic problems.

Our knowledge on the possible existence in nature of stable exotic particles depends solely upon experimental observation. Guided by this general principle and motivated by theoretical hypotheses on the existence of stable particles of strange quark matter, a variety of experimental searches have been performed. We provide an introduction to the theoretical hypotheses, an overview of the past searches, and a more detailed description of a recent search for helium-like strangelets in the Earth's atmosphere using a sensitive laser spectroscopy method.

A sensitive laser spectroscopic method has been applied to the quantitative determination of the isotope ratio of helium at the level of 3He/4He = 10^-7 - 10^-5. The resonant absorption of 1083 nm laser light by the metastable 3He atoms in a discharge cell was measured with the frequency modulation saturation spectroscopy technique while the abundance of 4He was measured by a direct absorption technique. The results on three different samples extracted from the atmosphere and commercial helium gas were in good agreement with values obtained with mass spectrometry. The achieved 3-sigma detection limit of 3He in helium is 4 x 10^-9. This demonstration required a 200 micro-L STP sample of He. The sensitivity can be further improved, and the required sample size reduced, by several orders of magnitude with the addition of cavity enhanced spectroscopy.

We demonstrate a new method for determining the 81Kr/Kr ratio in environmental samples based upon two measurements: the 85Kr/81Kr ratio measured by Atom Trap Trace Analysis (ATTA) and the 85Kr/Kr ratio measured by Low-Level Counting (LLC). This method can be used to determine the mean residence time of groundwater in the range of 10^5 - 10^6 a. It requires a sample of 100 micro-l STP of Kr extracted from approximately two tons of water. With modern atmospheric Kr samples, we demonstrate that the ratios measured by ATTA and LLC are directly proportional to each other within the measurement error of +/- 10%; we calibrate the 81Kr/Kr ratio of modern air measured using this method; and we show that the 81Kr/Kr ratios of samples extracted from air before and after the development of the nuclear industry are identical within the measurement error.

Atom Trap Trace Analysis (ATTA), a novel method based upon laser trapping and cooling, is used to count individual atoms of 41Ca present in biomedical samples with isotopic abundance levels between 10^-8 and 10^-10. ATTA is calibrated against Resonance Ionization Mass Spectrometry, demonstrating a good agreement between the two methods. The present ATTA system has a counting efficiency of 2x10^-7. Within one hour of observation time, its 3-sigma detection limit on the isotopic abundance of 41Ca reaches 4.5x10^-10.

Motivated by the theoretical hypotheses on the existence of heretofore unobserved stable elementary particles and exotic nuclear states, we searched for doubly-charged particles, as anomalously heavy isotopes of helium, in the Earth's atmoshpere using a sensitive laser spectroscopy technique. The concentration of noble-gas-like atoms in the atmosphere and the subsequent very large depletion of the light He-3,4 isotopes allow us to set stringent limits on th abundance: 10^-13 to 10^-17 per atom in the solar system, over the mass range of 20 to 10,000 amu., Comment: 13 pages, 4 figures
