Abstract

Traditional air particulate filtering in manned spaceflight (Apollo, Shuttle, ISS, etc.) has used cleanable or replaceable catch filters such as screens and High-Efficiency Particulate Arrestance (HEPA) filters. However, the human mission to Mars architecture will require a new approach. It is Martian dust that is the particulate of concern but the need also applies to particulates generated by crew. The Mars Exploration Program Analysis Group (MEPAG) high-lighted this concern in its Mars Science, Goals, Objectives, Investigations and Priorities document [7], by saying specifically that one high priority investigation will be to "Test ISRU atmospheric processing systems to measure resilience with respect to dust and other environmental challenge performance parameters that are critical to the design of a full-scale system." By stating this as high priority the MEPAG is acknowledging that developing and adequately verifying this capability is critical to success of a human mission to Mars. This architecture will require filtering capabilities that are highly reliable, will not restrict the flow path with clogging, and require little to no maintenance. This paper will summarize why this is the case, the general requirements for developing the technology, and the status of the progress made in this area.

Abstract

They begin with a note, a chord, the tap of a button, or the triggering of a loop: through progressively layered textures, samples, and extended performance techniques, many solo performers on YouTube construct their cover songs piece by piece before the viewer's eyes and ears. Combining virtuosity and novelty in a package ready-made for viral online popularity, this recent and rapidly growing internet phenomenon draws together traditions old and new, from the "one man band" of the nineteenth century, to the experimental live looping of 1980s performance art, to contemporary electronic music. Building on a number of recent studies that examine the affordances and restrictions of writing and performing music on various instruments, this article argues that these YouTube performers use both music-theoretical and instrumental expertise to convey complex textures through a minimal collection of musical materials. Through their sparse, economic construction, these intricate arrangements are each the end product of a careful analysis of each song, and they have much to teach us about the harmonic, melodic, and rhythmic structures of popular music. Abstract

The Orion Crew Exploration Vehicle (CEV) requires a smoke detector for the detection of particulate smoke products as part of the Fire Detection and Suppression (FDS) system. The smoke detector described in this paper is an adaptation of a mature commercial aircraft design for manned spaceflight. Changes made to the original design include upgrading the materials and electronic to space-qualified parts, and modifying the mechanical design to withstand launch and landing loads. The results of laboratory characterization of the response of the new design to test particles are presented.

Abstract

Haploidentical hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) is an attractive alternative donor option based on the rapid availability of an acceptable donor for most patients and decreased cost compared with costs of other alternative donor strategies. The safety of haploidentical HSCT has increased in recent years, making it ethically feasible to offer to patients with earlier stage disease. We developed a 2-step approach to haploidentical HSCT that separates the lymphoid and myeloid portions of the graft, allowing fixed T cell dosing to improve consistency in outcome comparisons. In the initial 2-step trial, the subset of patients without morphologic disease at HSCT had high rates of disease-free survival. To confirm these results, 28 additional patients without evidence of their disease were treated and are now 15 to 45 (median, 31) months past HSCT. To date, the 2-year cumulative incidence of nonrelapse mortality is 3.6%, with only 1 patient dying of nonrelapse causes, confirming the safety of this approach. Based on low regimen toxicity, the probabilities of disease-free and overall survival at 2 years are 74% and 77%, respectively, consistent with the findings in the initial trial and supporting the use of this approach in earlier stage patients lacking a matched related donor.

Abstract

Objective:The survival of multiple myeloma (MM) patients has improved significantly in the past decade with the development of new effective treatments including immunomodulators, monoclonal antibodies, and chimeric antigen receptor T cell (CAR-T) therapy. However, to date, none of the available treatments is curative for MM. In high-risk and relapsed patients, allogeneic stem cell transplant (allo-SCT) achieved long term survival in carefully selected MM patients. Here, we report our experience in MM patients who received allo-SCT at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital (TJUH). We aim to define the role of allo-SCT in the new era of MM treatment.
