AbstractThis is the first in a series of papers in which we study the n-Selmer group of an elliptic curve, with the aim of representing its elements as genus one normal curves of degree n. The methods we describe are practical in the case n= 3 for elliptic curves over the rationals, and have been implemented in MAGMA.

A 630 base pair fragment of the HIV‐1 genome encompassing the entire vifopen reading frame has been produced by the polymerase chain reaction and cloned into the baculovirus transfer vector pAcYM1. Extracts from insect cells infected with a recombinant baculovirus expressing the HIV‐1 vifgene product were used in a radioimmunoassay to analyse 238 sera from HIV infected individuals for the presence of anti‐vifantibodies. The overall prevalence of anti‐vifantibodies in this group of patients was 25.3%. Stratification of the group according to CD4 levels showed that anti‐vifantibodies were more prevalent in patients with CD4 counts below the median of the group (155 × 106cells/L; P= 0.005). A significant increase in anti‐vifantibodies was observed in patients with CD4 levels less than 280 × 106cells/L (P< 0.01) and in patients with symptomatic HIV infection (P= 0.0003). However, there was no significant difference in the prevalence of anti‐vifantibodies in patients stratified according to p24 antigen status. We modified and justified the radar equation for ground penetration by including the backscattering effect. We propose a strawman system on an orbiter 50 km above the surface based on lunar conditions. The Tightly coupled dipole arrays antenna substantially reduces the size and mass and consists of an array with 8 × 8 cells on a light weight plate that is 1.62‐m2wide with cells 0.25‐m high providing increased directionality and beam‐steering capability. The system includes 8 transmitters and 16 receivers that are able to measure wave polarization so that it is sensitive to subsurface water/ice. The system is controlled by central computers with transceivers all programmable providing more functionalities and flexibilities enabling systems of an even larger number of transceivers. It uses the synthetic aperture radar method to enhance the spatial resolution along the orbit track and has phase steering capability to increase the resolution in the cross‐track direction. The total transmitted power is 160 W. The radar is able to operate in three modes: a fine‐resolution mode that provides the full Multiple‐Input Multiple‐Output ultrawideband (MIMO UWB) capability with vertical range resolution up to 0.2 m, a deep penetration mode that is able to penetrate 100 m for high attenuation targets or over few kilometers for low attenuation targets, and a survey mode that provides overall characterization of the planet economically. This system can provide internal properties and structures of a target and detailed information about most useful resources such as ice, water, minerals, and shelter caves, for human space exploration on the Moon, Mars, and asteroids. The effect of enflurane on cardiovascular function was investigated in normal dogs and in dogs with chronic heart failure because of induced mutral valve disease (MVD). No significant changes were observed in heart rate (HR), right atrial pressure (RAP) and total systemic vascular resistance (TSVR) in normal dogs. However, significant decreases in HR and increases in RAP and TSVR were observed in dogs with MVD. There were no changes in pulmonary arterial pressure and left ventricular end-diastolic pressure in either group. Cardiac output, cardiac index, arterial pressure, left ventricular work index and left ventricular dp/dr and dp/rIIP showed a concentration-dependent decrease in both groups but the changes were greater in dogs with MVD.
