Leveraging a high-resolution 3D dust map of the solar neighborhood from Edenhofer et al. (2024), we derive a new 3D model for the dust-traced surface of the Local Bubble, the supernova-driven cavity surrounding the Sun. We find that the surface of the Local Bubble is highly irregular in shape, with its peak extinction surface falling at an average distance of 170 pc from the Sun (spanning 70-600+ pc) with a typical thickness of 35 pc and a total dust-traced mass of $(6.0 \pm 0.7) \times 10^5 \ \rm{M}_{\odot}$. The Local Bubble displays an extension in the Galactic Northern hemisphere that is morphologically consistent with representing a "Local Chimney." We argue this chimney was likely created by the "bursting" of this supernova-driven superbubble, leading to the funneling of interstellar medium ejecta into the lower Galactic halo. We find that many well-known dust features and molecular clouds fall on the surface of the Local Bubble and that several tunnels to other adjacent cavities in the interstellar medium may be present. Our new, parsec-resolution view of the Local Bubble may be used to inform future analysis of the evolution of nearby gas and young stars, the investigation of direct links between the solar neighborhood and the Milky Way's lower halo, and numerous other applications., Comment: 27 pages, 16 figures. Gender inequity is one of the biggest challenges facing the STEM workforce. While there are many studies that look into gender disparities within STEM and academia, the majority of these have been designed and executed by those unfamiliar with research in sociology and gender studies. They adopt a normative view of gender as a binary choice of 'male' or 'female,' leaving individuals whose genders do not fit within that model out of such research entirely. This especially impacts those experiencing multiple axes of marginalization, such as race, disability, and socioeconomic status. For STEM fields to recruit and retain members of historically excluded groups, a new paradigm must be developed. Here, we collate a new dataset of the methods used in 119 past studies of gender equity, and recommend better survey practices and institutional policies based on a more complex and accurate approach to gender. We find that problematic approaches to gender in surveys can be classified into 5 main themes - treating gender as white, observable, discrete, as a statistic, and as inconsequential. We recommend allowing self-reporting of gender and never automating gender assignment within research. This work identifies the key areas of development for studies of gender-based inclusion within STEM, and provides recommended solutions to support the methodological uplift required for this work to be both scientifically sound and fully inclusive., Comment: 33 pages (15 pages plus references), 1 table. Compression in giant molecular cloud (GMC) collisions is a promising mechanism to trigger formation of massive star clusters and OB associations. We simulate colliding and non-colliding magnetised GMCs and examine the properties of prestellar cores, selected from projected mass surface density maps, including after synthetic {\it ALMA} observations. We then examine core properties, including mass, size, density, velocity, velocity dispersion, temperature and magnetic field strength. After four Myr, $\sim1,000$ cores have formed in the GMC collision and the high-mass end of the core mass function (CMF) can be fit by a power law $dN/d{\rm{log}}M\propto{M}^{-\alpha}$ with $\alpha\simeq0.7$, i.e., relatively top-heavy compared to a Salpeter mass function. Depending on how cores are identified, a break in the power law can appear around a few $\times10\:M_\odot$. The non-colliding GMCs form fewer cores with a CMF with $\alpha\simeq0.8$ to 1.2, i.e., closer to the Salpeter index. We compare the properties of these CMFs to those of several observed samples of cores. Considering other properties, cores formed from colliding clouds are typically warmer, have more disturbed internal kinematics and are more likely to be gravitational unbound, than cores formed from non-colliding GMCs. The dynamical state of the protocluster of cores formed in the GMC-GMC collision is intrinsically subvirial, but can appear to be supervirial if the total mass measurement is affected by observations that miss mass on large scales or at low densities., Comment: 22 pages, 22 figures, 2 tables, accepted to MNRAS

NGC 602 is a young, low-metallicity star cluster in the "Wing" of the Small Magellanic Cloud. We reveal the recent evolutionary past of the cluster through analysis of high-resolution ($\sim$0.4 pc) Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array observations of molecular gas in the associated $\textrm{H}\scriptstyle\mathrm{II}$ region N90. We identify 110 molecular clumps ($R <$ 0.8 pc) traced by CO emission, and study the relationship between the clumps and associated young stellar objects (YSOs) and pre-main-sequence (PMS) stars. The clumps have high virial parameters (typical $\alpha_{\rm{vir}} = $ 4-11) and may retain signatures of a collision in the last $\lesssim$8 Myr between $\textrm{H}\scriptstyle\mathrm{I}$ components of the adjacent supergiant shell SMC-SGS 1. We obtain a CO-bright-to-H$_2$ gas conversion factor of $X_{CO,B} = (3.4 \pm 0.2) \times 10^{20}$ cm$^{-2}$ (K km s$^{-1}$)$^{-1}$, and correct observed clump properties for CO-dark H$_2$ gas to derive a total molecular gas mass in N90 of $16,600 \pm 2,400 \ M_\odot$. We derive a recent ($\lesssim 1$ Myr) star formation rate of $130 \pm 30 \ M_{\odot}$ Myr$^{-1}$ with an efficiency of 8 $ \pm$ 3\% assessed through comparing total YSO mass to total molecular gas mass. Very few significant radial trends exist between clump properties or PMS star ages and distance from NGC 602. We do not find evidence for a triggered star formation scenario among the youngest ($\lesssim$2 Myr) stellar generations, and instead conclude that a sequential star formation process in which NGC 602 did not directly cause recent star formation in the region is likely., Comment: 31 pages, 13 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

Stars form within molecular clouds, so characterizing the physical states of molecular clouds is key in understanding the process of star formation. Cloud structure and stability is frequently assessed using metrics including the virial parameter and Larson (1981) scaling relationships between cloud radius, velocity dispersion, and surface density. Departures from the typical Galactic relationships between these quantities have been observed in low-metallicity environments. The amount of H$_2$ gas in cloud envelopes without corresponding CO emission is expected to be high under these conditions; therefore, this "CO-dark" gas could plausibly be responsible for the observed variations in cloud properties. We derive simple corrections that can be applied to empirical clump properties (mass, radius, velocity dispersion, surface density, and virial parameter) to account for CO-dark gas in clumps following power-law and Plummer mass density profiles. We find that CO-dark gas is not likely to be the cause of departures from Larson's relationships in low-metallicity regions, but that virial parameters may be systematically overestimated. Located on the campus of the Thacher School in Southern California, the Thacher Observatory has a legacy of astronomy research and education that dates back to the late 1950's. In 2016, the observatory was fully renovated with upgrades including a new 0.7-m telescope, a research grade camera, and a slit dome with full automation capabilities. The low-elevation site is bordered by the Los Padres National Forest and therefore affords dark to very dark skies allowing for accurate and precise photometric observations. We present a characterization of the site including sky brightness, weather, and seeing, and we demonstrate the on-sky performance of the facility. Our primary research programs are based around our multi-band photometric capabilities and include photometric monitoring of variable sources, a nearby supernova search and followup program, a quick response transient followup effort, and exoplanet and eclipsing binary light curves. The stellar initial mass function (IMF) is fundamental for many areas of astrophysics, but its origin remains poorly understood. It may be inherited from the core mass function (CMF) or arise as a result of more chaotic, competitive accretion. Dense, gravitationally bound cores are seen in molecular clouds and some observations have suggested that the CMF is similar in shape to the IMF, though translated to higher masses by a factor of $\sim3$. Here we measure the CMF in 28 dense clumps within 3.5 kpc that are likely to be central regions of massive protoclusters, observed via $1.3\:{\rm{mm}}$ dust continuum emission by the ALMAGAL project. We identify 222 cores using the dendrogram algorithm with masses ranging from 0.04 to $252\:M_{\odot}$. We apply completeness corrections for flux and number recovery, estimated from core insertion and recovery experiments. At higher masses, the final derived CMF is well described by a single power law of the form $dN/d\:{\textrm{log}}\:M\propto\:M^{-\alpha}$ with $\alpha\simeq0.94\pm0.08$. However, we find evidence of a break in this power-law behavior between $\sim5$ and $15\:M_{\odot}$, which is, to our knowledge, the first time such a break has been found in distant ($\gtrsim 1$ kpc) regions by ALMA. We compare this massive protocluster CMF with those derived using the same methods in the G286 protocluster and a sample of Infrared Dark Clouds. The massive protocluster CMF is significantly different, i.e., containing more massive cores, which is a potential indication of the role of environment on the CMF and IMF., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ, 25 pages, 10 figures, 4 tables
