Abstract: A central question of Astroparticle Physics, the origin of cosmic rays, still remains unsolved. HiSCORE (Hundred*i Square-km Cosmic ORigin Explorer) is a concept for a large-area wide-angle non-imaging air shower detector, addressing this question by searching for cosmic ray pevatrons in the energy range from 10TeV to few PeV and cosmic rays in the energy range above 100TeV. In the framework of the Tunka-HiSCORE project, first prototypes have been deployed on the site of the Tunka-133 experiment, where we plan to install an engineering array covering an area of the order of 1km2. On the same site, also imaging and particle detectors are planned, potentially allowing a future hybrid detector system. Here we present the HiSCORE detector principle, its potential for cosmic ray origin search and the status of ongoing activities in the framework of the Tunka-HiSCORE experiment.

Abstract: Measurement of polarized light provides a direct probe of magnetic fields in collimated outflows (jets) of relativistic plasma from accreting stellar-mass black holes at cosmological distances. These outflows power brief and intense flashes of prompt gamma-rays known as Gamma Ray Bursts (GRBs), followed by longer-lived afterglow radiation detected across the electromagnetic spectrum. Rapid-response polarimetric observations of newly discovered GRBs have probed the initial afterglow phase. Linear polarization degrees as high as Π∼30% are detected minutes after the end of the prompt GRB emission, consistent with a stable, globally ordered magnetic field permeating the jet at large distances from the central source. In contrast, optical and gamma-ray observations during the prompt phase led to discordant and often controversial results, and no definitive conclusions on the origin of the prompt radiation or the configuration of the magnetic field could be derived. Here we report the detection of linear polarization of a prompt optical flash that accompanied the extremely energetic and long-lived prompt gamma-ray emission from GRB 160625B. Our measurements probe the structure of the magnetic field at an early stage of the GRB jet, closer to the central source, and show that the prompt GRB phase is produced via fast cooling synchrotron radiation in a large-scale magnetic field advected from the central black hole and distorted from dissipation processes within the jet.

Abstract: The TAIGA astroparticle observatory is progressing with the deployment of new detector stations. The Tunka-Grande — scintillation counter array of the observatory expands with the new TAIGA-Muon stations. Several simulation studies were conducted for optimisation of the new station positioning and performance. Extensive air showers induced by gamma quanta or a proton in the range from 100 TeV to 1 PeV at a zenith angle of 0° were used for these studies. Based on the developed simulation, the capabilities of identification of high energy extensive air showers were studied. The soil thickness, the detector and station positions, the lowest measurable energy range of the cosmic rays, and different methods of air shower identification were investigated.

Abstract: The TAIGA experiment in Tunka valley is expanding the present scintillation detector array with new TAIGA-Muon detector stations. A simulation model was developed for optimization of the layout of the new stations and study of the identification performance of the array. The extensive air showers (EASs) were simulated with the CORSIKA simulation tool, and the detector response was simulated with the GEANT4 package. EASs induced by gamma quanta or protons in the energy range from 1 PeV to 10 PeV and the zenith angle range from 0° to 45°, are used for these studies. For the identification of high energy extensive air showers, a method based on a neural network was suggested. With this method, the proton identification efficiency is more than 90%, while the gamma identification efficiency not less than 50%.

Abstract: With the discovery of gamma ray bursts1,2, it became clear that our Universe flickers with superfast catastrophic events, sometimes lasting for a thousandths of a second. These ultra-fast transients - the peculiar one-day butterflies of the Universe - shine so brightly that they are noticed even on the other end of the Universe and, moreover, by very small telescopes. But in the radio range, the sky remained silent until the beginning of the 21st century. Only in 2007, radio astronomers analyzing archival observations of the Parkes Radio Telescope first encountered fast transients 3,4 . About a hundred such sources have already been discovered. We report the first optical observation of the closest radio burster FRB 180916.J0158+655-8 synchronously with a radio burst. In total, we obtained about 155,093 images at MASTER Global Robotic Net9*. In the course of our observations, we found a new method for detecting objects deep below the noise level. In addition, using the new method, we found the excess of photons in the FRB direction at a level of 23 m associated with the emission of the host galaxy.

Abstract: Objectives of the TAIGA Astrophysical complex include the study of the flux of charged cosmic rays and diffuse gamma rays with energies above 100 TeV. This complex is located in the Tunka Valley about 50 km from Lake Baikal at the site of the Tunka-133 Cherenkov facility. TAIGA includes the TAIGA-HiSCORE wide-angle Cherenkov array, the network of Imaging Atmospheric Cherenkov Telescopes (TAIGA-IACT), the Tunka-Grande and TAIGA-Muon scintillation arrays. In this work, we present the results of an analysis of the joint events of the Tunka-Grande scintillation array and TAIGA-HiSCORE and Tunka-133 Cherenkov facilities. The results verify sufficient accuracy of the scintillation experiment for the hybrid study of mass composition of cosmic rays and gamma-hadron separation.

Abstract: The Tunka-Grande array is part of a single experimental complex, which also includes the Tunka-133 and TAIGA-HiScORE (High Sensitivity COsmic Rays and gamma Explorer) wide-angle Cherenkov arrays, TAIGA-IACT array (Imaging Atmospheric Cherenkov Telescope) and TAGA-MUON scintillation array. This complex is located in the Tunka Valley (Buryatia Republic, Russia), 50 km from Lake Baikal. It is designed to study the energy spectrum and the mass composition of charged cosmic rays in the energy range 100 TeV - 1000 PeV, to search for diffuse gamma rays above 100 TeV and to study local sources of gamma rays with energies above 30 TeV. This report outlines 3 key points. The first is the description of the Tunka-Grande scintillation array. The second one presents the computer simulation strategy of the Tunka Grande array based on the Geant4 software. The third one is devoted to the prospects for future research in the field of cosmic ray physics and gamma-ray astronomy using simulation results.

Abstract: In the paper we present our simulation strategy of the Tunka-Grande, TAIGA-Muon, and TAIGA-HiSCORE arrays in the light of the problem of separation astrophysical high-energy gamma rays from the cosmic ray background. The paper contains a description of our simulation method, based on Geant4 and CORSIKA codes. We also present the prospect of future research with TAIGA (Tunka Advanced Instrument for cosmic rays and Gamma Astronomy) with using the simulation results.

Abstract: The Tunka-Grande scintillation array is part of the TAIGA Gamma Observatory. It is intended for investigation of energy spectrum and mass composition of primary cosmic rays in the energy range 10 PeV–10 EeV and the search for diffuse cosmic gamma rays. The TAIGA-HiSCORE Cherenkov array aims at observing gamma-rays with the energy from 1 TeV. TAIGA-Muon low-threshold scintillation detector array is a network of surface and underground detectors for registration charge particles of EAS. Currently, 3 clusters have been deployed. The first cluster is running in test mode. It is planed that in the future the total area of the TAIGA-Muon will be about 2000 sq. m. and it will search astrophysical gamma-rays in the energy range from 100 TeV together with the Tunka-Grande scintillation array and the Cherenkov experiments of the TAIGA Gamma Observatory. To evaluate the possibility of join operation Tunka-Grande, TAIGA-Muon and TAIGA-HiSCORE, a simulation was performed using the CORSIKA and Geant4 software packages. The status of model-based studies is presented and assessed the prospects for joint operation of the arrays.

Abstract: The physics motivations and advantages of the new TAIGA (Tunka Advanced Instrument for cosmic ray physics and Gamma Astronomy) detector are presented. TAIGA aims at gamma-ray astronomy at energies from a few TeV to several PeV, as well as cosmic ray physics from 100 TeV to several EeV. For the energy range 30 – 200 TeV the sensitivity of 10 km2 area TAIGA array for the detection of local sources is expected to be 5 × 10-14 erg cm-2 sec-1 for 300 h of observations. Reconstruction of the given EAS energy, incoming direction and its core position, based on the timing TAIGA-HiSCORE data, allows one to increase a distance between the IACTs up to 600-1000 m. The low investments together with the high sensitivity for energies ≥ 30-50 TeV make this pioneering technique very attractive for exploring the galactic PeVatrons and cosmic rays. At present the TAIGA first stage has been constructed in Tunka valley, 50 km West from the Lake Baikal. The first experimental results of the TAIGA first stage are presented.

Abstract: We report the first ground-based observation of the CATS-LIDAR onboard the ISS by the TAIGA-HiSCORE gamma-ray facility, and the MASTER-Tunka Robotic telescope. HiSCORE detects unscattered laser light directly from the ISS, at up to km-scale distance from the laser beam spot on ground. The ISS-LIDAR turns out to be a unique calibration tool, in particular to verify the absolute astronomical pointing of HiSCORE. We detected the LIDAR for 11 ISS-passages; among these were observations of forward scattering of the laser beam in dense clouds, which might carry information complementary to the LIDAR technique. We expect other air Cherenkov installations like IACTs to benefit from this light source.

Abstract: The physics motivations and characteristics of the new gamma-experiment TAIGA (Tunka Advanced Instrument for cosmic ray physics and Gamma Astronomy) are presented. The TAIGA experiment addresses ground-based gamma-ray astronomy at energies from a few TeV to several PeV, as well as cosmic ray physics from $100$ TeV to several EeV. For the energy range $30 - 200$ TeV the sensitivity of the planned for future extension of TAIGA up to $5$ km$^2$ area for detection of the local sources is expected to be $10^{-13}$ erg cm$^{-2}$ sec$^{-1}$ for $500$ h of observation. The combination of the wide angle Cherenkov timing detectors of the TAIGA-HiSCORE array and the $4$ m class Imaging Atmospheric Cherenkov Telescopes of the TAIGA-IACT array with their FoV of $10x10$ degrees offers a cost effective-way to construct a $5$ km$^2$ array. Reconstruction of an EAS energy, direction and core position based on the TAIGA-HiSCORE data will allow us to increase the distance between comparatively expensive IACTs up to $800 - 1200$ m. The low investments together with the high sensitivity for energies $\geqslant 30-50$ TeV make this pioneering technique very attractive for exploring the galactic PeVatrons and cosmic rays. In addition to the Cherenkov light detectors we intend to deploy an array of muon detectors (TAIGA-Muon array) over an area of 1 km$^2$ with a total area of about $2000 - 3000$ m$^2$. The TAIGA-IACT-HiSCORE together with the TAIGA-Muon array will be used for selection of gamma-ray induced EAS. At present the first stage of TAIGA have been constructed in the Tunka valley, $\sim 50$ km West from the Lake Baikal in Siberia. Now it consists of 28 TAIGA-HiSCORE Cherenkov stations distributed over an area of $0.25$ km$^2$ and the first IACT of the TAIGA-IACT array. We are planning to test operation of the single telescope in coincidence with the HiSCORE up to shower impact distances of $\sim 500 - 600$ m; for this purpose we already started construction of the second imaging telescope at $300$ m distance from the first one. During 2017 -- 2019 years we intend to increase the number of the TAIGA-HiSCORE stations up to $100 - 120$, spread on the area of $1$ km$^2$ and to deploy $2$ additional IACTs.

Abstract: Tunka-HiSCORE (HiSCORE: Hundred Square-km Cosmic Origin Explorer) is a new Cherenkov EAS arrayfor multi-TeV γ ray astronomy and cosmic ray studies. Abstract: Observations of gamma rays up to several 100 TeV are particularly important to spectrally resolve the cutoff regime of the long-sought Pevatrons, the cosmic-ray PeV accelerators. One component of the TAIGA hybrid detector is the TAIGA-HiSCORE timing array, which currently consists of 28 wide angle (0.6 sr) air Cherenkov timing stations distributed on an area of 0.25 km2 . The HiSCORE concept is based on (non-imaging) air shower front sampling with Cherenkov light. First results are presented.

TAIGA-HiSCORE is made of integrating air Cherenkov detector stations with a wide field of view (0.6 sr), placed at a distance of about 100 m. They cover an area of initially ∼0.25 km$^2$ (prototype array), and of ∼5 km$^2$ at the final phase of the experiment. Each station includes 4 PMTs with 20 or 25 cm diameter, equipped with light guides shaped as Winstone cones. We describe the design, specifications of the read-out, DAQ and control and monitoring systems of the array. Abstract: The problem of chemical composition below the knee in the cosmic-ray energy spectrum has not yet been solved due to low statistics collected from direct experiments. In the HiSCORE experiment the lateral distribution functions (LDF) of Cherenkov light of EASs with energy greater than hundreds of TeV can be measured in detail for millions of individual events. A full steepness of LDF is sensitive to the depth of shower maximum and as a result to primary particle type. In this paper, we developed a parametric method of separation between heavy and light groups of nuclei using the ’knee-like’ approximation of LDF and taking into account measurement uncertainty.

Abstract: A combination measles, mumps, rubella, and varicella vaccine (ProQuad, MerckCo., Inc, West Point, PA) was evaluated in five clinical trials. Use of ProQuad would result in fewer injections for children and would facilitate universal immunization against all four diseases.To describe the combined results obtained from the studies conducted during the clinical development program for ProQuad.A total of 5833 healthy children, 12-23 months of age, and 399 healthy children, 4-6 years of age, received 1 or 2 doses of ProQuad in five controlled clinical trials. M-M-R II and VARIVAX were used as the control for most studies. Safety was evaluated for six weeks postvaccination and immunogenicity was assessed six weeks after each dose by a sensitive assay (ELISA or gpELISA).A single dose of ProQuad in 12- to 23-month-old children was shown to be as immunogenic as a single dose of M-M-R II and VARIVAX and was generally well tolerated. ProQuad can be used concomitantly with other vaccines (hepatitis B and Hoemophilus influenzoe b). A higher rate of fever was reported after 1 dose of ProQuad compared to M-M-R II and VARIVAX, but fever episodes were transient without long-term sequelae. Both a 2-dose regimen of ProQuad in 12- to 23-month-olds and use of ProQuad in place of M-M-R II at 4-6 years were shown to be immunogenic and well tolerated. The incidence of adverse experiences following a second dose of ProQuad was lower than that following the initial dose.A single dose of ProQuad is as immunogenic as M-M-R II and VARIVAX and is well tolerated in a 1- or 2-dose schedule. ProQuad should easily fit into the routine immunization schedule.

TAIGA will search for "PeVatrons" (ultra-high energy gamma-ray sources) and measure the composition and spectrum of cosmic rays in the knee region (100 TeV - 10 PeV) with good energy resolution and high statistics. TAIGA will include Tunka-HiSCORE (an array of wide-angle air Cherenkov stations), an array of Imaging Atmospheric Cherenkov Telescopes, an array of particle detectors, both on the surface and underground, and the TUNKA-133 air Cherenkov array.

Abstract: Up to several 10s of TeV, Imaging Air Cherenkov Telescopes (IACTs) have proven to be the instruments of choice for GeV/TeV gamma-ray astronomy due to their good reconstrucion quality and gamma-hadron separation power. However, sensitive observations at and above 100 TeV require very large effective areas (10 km2 and more), which is difficult and expensive to achieve.The alternative to IACTs are shower front sampling arrays (non-imaging technique or timing-arrays) with a large area and a wide field of view. Such experiments provide good core position, energy and angular resolution, but only poor gamma-hadron separation. Combining both experimental approaches, using the strengths of both techniques, could optimize the sensitivity to the highest energies.The TAIGA project plans to combine the non-imaging HiSCORE [8] array with small (~10m2) imaging telescopes. This paper covers simulation results of this hybrid approach.

Abstract: The gamma-ray energy regime beyond 10 TeV is crucial for the search for the most energetic Galactic accelerators. The energy spectra of most known gamma-ray emitters only reach up to few 10s of TeV, with 80 TeV from the Crab Nebula being the highest energy so far observed significantly. Uncovering their spectral shape up to few 100 TeV could answer the question whether some of these objects are cosmic ray Pevatrons, i.e. Galactic PeV accelerators.Sensitive observations in this energy range and beyond require very large effective detector areas of several 10s to 100 square-km. While imaging air Cherenkov telescopes have proven to be the instruments of choice in the GeV to TeV energy range, very large area telescope arrays are limited by the number of required readout channels per instrumented square-km (due to the large number of channels per telescope). Alternatively, the shower-front sampling technique allows to instrument large effective areas and also naturally provides large viewing angles of the instrument. Solely measuring the shower front light density and timing (hence timing- arrays), the primary particle properties are reconstructed on the basis of the measured lateral density function and the shower front arrival times. This presentation gives an overview of the technique, its goals, and future perspective.

Abstract: The physical motivations and advantages of the new gamma-observatory TAIGA (Tunka Advanced Instrument for cosmic ray physics and Gamma Astronomy) is presented. The TAIGA array is a complex, hybrid detector for ground-based gamma-ray astronomy for energies from a few TeV to several PeV as well as for cosmic ray studies from 100 TeV to several EeV. The TAIGA will include the wide angle Cherenkov array TAIGA-HiSCORE with ~5 km$^{2}$ area, a net of 16 IACT telescopes (with FOV of about 10x10 degree), muon detectors with a total area of up to 2000-3000 m$^{2}$ and the radio array Tunka-Rex.

Abstract: The design of an aqueous formulation for acidic fibroblast growth factor (aFGF) requires an understanding of the type of compounds that can either directly or indirectly stabilize the protein. To this end, spectrophotometric turbidity measurements were initially employed to screen the ability of polyanionic ligands, less specific compounds, and variations in solution conditions (temperature and pH) to stabilize aFGF against heat-induced aggregation. It was found that in addition to the well-known protection of aFGF by heparin, a surprisingly wide variety of polyanions (including small sulfated and phosphorylated compounds) also stabilizes aFGF. These polyanionic ligands are capable of raising the temperature at which the protein unfolds by 15–30°C. Many commonly used excipients were also observed to stabilize aFGF in both the presence and the absence of heparin. High concentrations of some of these less specific agents are also able to increase the temperature of aFGF thermal unfolding by as much as 6–12°C as shown by circular dichroism and differential scanning calorimetry. Other compounds were found which protect the chemically labile cysteine residues of aFGF from oxidation. Aqueous formulations of aFGF were thus designed to contain both a polyanionic ligand that enhances structural integrity by binding to the protein and chelating agents (e.g., EDTA) to prevent metal ion-catalyzed oxidation of cysteine residues. While room-temperature storage (30°C) leads to rapid inactivation of aFGF in physiological buffer alone, several of these aFGF formulations are stable in vitro for at least 3 months at 30°C. Abstract: Measurements of optical properties in media enclosing Cherenkov neutrino telescopes are important not only at the moment of the selection of an adequate site, but also for the continuous characterization of the medium as a function of time. Over the two last decades, the Baikal collaboration has been measuring the optical properties of the deep water in Lake Baikal (Siberia) where, since April 1998, the neutrino telescope NT-200 is in operation. Measurements have been made with custom devices. The NEMO Collaboration, aiming at the construction of a km3 Cherenkov neutrino detector in the Mediterranean Sea, has developed an experimental setup for the measurement of oceanographic and optical properties of deep sea water. This setup is based on a commercial transmissometer. During a joint campaign of the two collaborations in March and April 2001, light absorption, scattering and attenuation in water have been measured. Abstract: Pain at the injection site is one of the most commonly-reported local reactions associated with administration of a vaccine, but it has not been quantified by a validated instrument for pain measurement. We conducted a randomised, double-blind clinical trial to evaluate the measurement characteristics of two commonly-used pain questionnaires, the McGill Present Pain Intensity (PPI) and the Brief Pain Inventory (BPI) Current Pain Question, in the assessment of intramuscular injection-site pain associated with vaccine administration. The PPI measures pain on a scale of 0 (no pain) to 5 (excruciating pain) and the BPI measures pain on a scale of 0 (no pain) to 10 (pain as bad as you can imagine).Two hundred healthy adults were randomised to one of the five regimens: tetanus and diphtheria toxoids adsorbed (Td), aluminum hydroxide adjuvant (alum), physiological saline, or one of the two licensed hepatitis A vaccines, VAQTA, or HAVRIX. Pain assessment was made at eight time-points over a 2-day period after injection.The differences in the time-averaged pain (+/- standard deviation) on the PPI were statistically significant between Td (0.58+/-0.59) and either saline (0.14+/-0.23) (p0.005) or alum (0.22+/-0.35) (p0.01). Reported time-averaged pain were significantly lower for VAQTA than HAVRIX (p = 0.028). Similar differences were observed for the BPI.Both instruments have sufficient discriminative validity to distinguish between different levels of injection-site pain in adults.

Abstract: Abstract We review the status of the Baikal Neutrino Telescope, which has recently been upgraded to the 5 Mton detector NT200+. We present results on searches for upward going atmospheric neutrinos and relativistic magnetic monopoles, obtained from 1998–2002 with the predecessor detector NT200. A search for very high energy neutrinos yields an upper limit on the extraterrestrial di-use neutrino ux for 20 TeV < E < 50 PeV. We describe the strategy of upgrading NT200 to NT200+ and creating a detector on the Gigaton (km3) scale at lake Baikal. R&D activities on that next stage detector have been started. Abstract: Imaging Atmospheric Cherenkov Telescopes (IACTs) are one of the key parts of the TAIGA observatory, which is designed to study gamma rays and charged cosmic rays in the energy range of 10^13 eV – 10^18 eV. The current prototype phase comprises three IACTs. The first IACT was fabricated at JINR, Dubna, and started its first commissioning season in the Tunka valley in 2017. The second one has been assembled there in fall 2018, the third structure one is ready for installation in autumn 2019. This report presents the main TAIGA IACT characteristics and results from pointing performance studies in the last 2 seasons. We also describe R&D activities started to fabricate focusing glass mirrors at JINR, and give results for the first prototypes measurements.

Abstract: The first IACT as part of the gamma and cosmic-ray experiment TAIGA was installed in the Tunka Valley near Lake Baikal in fall 2016. In the following months different systems of the telescope were put into test operation. We started the commissioning phase of operating the telescope in time coincidence with the wide angle integrating air Cherenkov HiSCORE array, which for the time being comprises 28 working stations. We anticipate that the hybrid operation of the non-imaging and imaging telescopes will lead to a cost-efficient, highly sensitive detector operating in the energy range from 30-50 TeV till several PeV. Here we want to report on the first test results of operating the prototype hybrid array. We will focus on the analysis of count rates and image size spectra for all events detected by the IACT and the joint events detected also by the HiSCORE array, comparing these with expectations from MC simulations.

Abstract: The TAIGA (Tunka Advanced Instrument for cosmic rays and Gamma-Astronomy) observatory is designed to study the gamma ray sources and galactic cosmic rays. It is located in the Tunka Valley 50 km from the lake Baikal (Siberia). The first part of TAIGA called the EAS Cherenkov array TAIGA-HiSCORE currently consists of 28 wide-angle (0.6 sr) stations, distributed over an area of 0.25 km^2. The Crab observation exposure was about 115 hours during the winter seasons of 2016-2017. The expected gamma quanta excess depends on the array energy threshold and a model of the Crab energy spectrum extrapolation to the higher energies. We present preliminary results of experimental data and MC simulations comparison as well as energy threshold and angular resolutions. The experimental data is in a good agreement with the simulations. An excess of events (about 25 events in the region 30-63 TeV) observed from the Crab direction is compatible with the expected one.

Abstract: The first imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescope as a part of the TAIGA (Tunka Advanced Instrument for cosmic rays and Gamma Astronomy) detector was put into commission in the Tunka valley in December 2016. The reflector of the telescope follows the Davis-Cotton design. It is composed of 34 glassmirror tiles, each of 60 cm diameter, and has a diameter of 4.3 m. The focal length is 4.75 m. The imaging camera includes 560 photomultiplier-based pixels, providing a FoV of ~10×10 degrees. The imaging camera is made by using a modular principle and includes trigger, data acquisition and processing systems based on MAROC3 chips. The slow control system monitors the count rate and the PMT anode currents as well as controls the high voltage. For monitoring performance of the camera a dedicated calibration system based on nanosecond pulsed LED light source was developed.

Abstract: On 2015 June 15, the Swift space observatory discovered that the Galactic black hole candidate V404 Cyg was undergoing another active X-ray phase, after 25 years of inactivity. The 12 telescopes of the MASTER Global Robotic Net located at six sites across four continents were the first ground-based observatories to start optical monitoring of the microquasar after its gamma-ray wake up at 18h 34m 09s U.T. on 2015 June 15. In this paper, we report, for the first time, the discovery of variable optical linear polarization, changing by 4%–6% over a timescale of ∼1 hr, on two different epochs. We can conclude that the additional variable polarization arises from the relativistic jet generated by the black hole in V404 Cyg. The polarization variability correlates with optical brightness changes, increasing when the flux decreases. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: The Tunka-Grande experiment is a scintillation array with about 0.5 km$^2$ sensitive area at Tunka Valley, Siberia, for measuring charged particles and muons in extensive air showers (EASs). Tunka-Grande is optimized for cosmic ray studies in the energy range 10 PeV to about 1 EeV, where exploring the composition is of fundamental importance for understanding the transition from galactic to extragalactic origin of cosmic rays. This paper attempts to provide a synopsis of the current results of the experiment. In particular, the reconstruction of the all-particle energy spectrum in the range of 10 PeV to 1 EeV based on experimental data from four observation seasons is presented.

Abstract: The physical motivations, present status, main results in study of cosmic rays and in the field of gamma-ray astronomy as well future plans of the TAIGA-1 (Tunka Advanced Instrument for cosmic ray physics and Gamma Astronomy) project are presented. The TAIGA observatory addresses ground-based gamma-ray astronomy and astroparticle physics at energies from a few TeV to several PeV, as well as cosmic ray physics from 100 TeV to several EeV. The pilot TAIGA-1 complex is located in the Tunka valley, 50 km west from the southern tip of the lake Baikal.
