Abstract

“Aadun” is a Nigerian traditional maize based snack, but now poorly accepted by todays snack consumers despites its quality. To increase acceptability sensory panelist using 5 points ranking scores were asked to rank “Aadun” processed using laboratory equipment and traditional processed commercial samples purchased from Ibadan and Abeokuta with packaging materials of Leaf (Taumatoccous Danielle), Low Density Polyethylene (LDPE), High Density Polyethylene (HDPE), Aluminum foil (ALF) and Polystyrene plastic cup (PSC). Laboratory “aadun” packaged in different materials and the commercial samples packaged in LDPE were stored under refrigeration (4-5 0C; RH 74.85%), ambient (25-30 0C; RH 66.7%) and sunlight (30-44 0C; RH 65.81%) conditions for 6 months and at 2 weeks intervals off flavor (OF) was determined by 10 trained sensory panelists and growth of microorganism by total plate count (TPC) method. Shelf life was estimated by plotting hazard (TPC) against time on linear and quadratic regression curve and safety cut off value of 105cfu/g as limit. Results showed the highly ranked “Aadun” was Laboratory sample followed by Ibadan and Abeokuta samples and PSC ranked highest followed by ALF, HDPE, LDPE and Leaf. A longer lag period before OF and TPC increased was under Refrigeration, PSC, LDPE Laboratory and Abeokuta samples but, shorter under ambient, sunlight, leaf and LDPE Ibadan sample. Longer shelf life period was under refrigeration, PSC (42.4 weeks), LDPE laboratory (40.1 weeks), LDPE Abeokuta (33.2 weeks but shorter under ambient, sunlight, leaf (19 weeks) and LDPE Ibadan (30.5 weeks). This study shows that if modern technology and PSC packing plastic materials and storing under refrigeration conditions will improve acceptability, long storage stability and shelf life thereby, increasing production and the economy of the local women processor in Nigeria.

Abstract

The study evaluated the sensory acceptability of partially defatted dikanut (Irvingia gabonensis) flour in ogbono soup before and during storage. The partially defatted dikanut flour samples (12% fat and 9% fat) and full-fat sample (68% fat) as control were packaged in high- and low-density polyethylene films, stored at ambient condition (26 ± 2°C, 78 ± 2% RH) for 12 weeks, and sensory evaluation was done at 4-week intervals during the period of storage. Data obtained showed that partial defatting led to a lower calorie and higher nutrient density of dikanut flour. There were significant differences (p > 0.05) in sliminess, taste, aroma, and overall acceptability of the soup. The results also showed that the sensory qualities of ogbono soup prepared from partially defatted dikanut flour were acceptable before and throughout the period of storage; hence the defatting of dikanut flour could enhance the sensory qualities of ogbono soup.

3. Ablation of ghrelin receptor reduces adiposity and improves insulin sensitivity during aging by regulating fat metabolism in white and brown adipose tissues

Abstract

Aging is associated with increased adiposity in white adipose tissues and impaired thermogenesis in brown adipose tissues; both contribute to increased incidences of obesity and type 2 diabetes. Ghrelin is the only known circulating orexigenic hormone that promotes adiposity. In this paper, we show that ablation of the ghrelin receptor (growth hormone secretagogue receptor, GHS-R) improves insulin sensitivity during aging. Compared to wild-type (WT) mice, old Ghsr−/− mice have reduced fat and preserve a healthier lipid profile. Old Ghsr−/− mice also exhibit elevated energy expenditure and resting metabolic rate, yet have similar food intake and locomotor activity. While GHS-R expression in white and brown adipose tissues was below detection in the young mice, GHS-R expression was readily detectable in visceral white fat and interscapular brown fat of the old mice. Gene expression profiles reveal that Ghsr ablation reduced glucose/lipid uptake and lipogenesis in white adipose tissues, but increased thermogenic capacity in brown adipose tissues. Ghsr ablation prevents age-associated decline of thermogenic gene expression of uncoupling protein 1 (UCP1). Cell culture studies in brown adipocytes further demonstrate that ghrelin suppresses the expression of adipogenic and thermogenic genes, while GHS-R antagonist abolishes ghrelin’s effects and increases UCP1 expression. Hence, GHS-R plays an important role in thermogenic impairment during aging. Ghsr ablation improves aging-associated obesity and insulin resistance by reducing adiposity and increasing thermogenesis. GHS-R antagonists may be a new means of combating obesity by shifting the energy balance from obesogenesis to thermogenesis.

Abstract

Measurements are presented of inclusive charm and beauty cross sections in e^+p collisions at HERA for values of photon virtuality 12 \le Q^2 \le 60 GeV^2 and of the Bjorken scaling variable 0.0002 \le x \le 0.005. The fractions of events containing charm and beauty quarks are determined using a method based on the impact parameter, in the transverse plane, of tracks to the primary vertex, as measured by the H1 vertex detector. Values for the structure functions F_2^{c\bar{c}} and F_2^{b\bar{b}} are obtained. This is the first measurement of F_2^{b\bar{b}} in this kinematic range. The results are found to be compatible with the predictions of perturbative quantum chromodynamics and withprevious measurements of F_2^{c\bar{c}}.

Abstract

A search for gravitinos produced in e±p collisions is performed using the H1 detector at HERA. The data were taken at a centre-of-mass energy of 319 GeV and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 64.3 pb -1 for e+p collisions and 13.5 pb-1 for e -p collisions. If R-parity is not conserved, the t-channel exchange of a selectron can produce a neutralino, which, in models where the gravitino is the lightest supersymmetric particle, subsequently decays into a photon and a light gravitino. The resulting event signature, which involves an isolated photon, a jet and missing transverse energy, is analysed for the first time at HERA. No deviation from the Standard Model is found. Exclusion limits on the cross section and on R-parity-violating Yukawa couplings are derived in a Gauge Mediated Supersymmetry Breaking scenario. The results are independent of the squark sector. Neutralinos and supersymmetric partners of the left-handed electron with masses up to 112 GeV and 164 GeV, respectively, can be ruled out at the 95% confidence level for R-parity-violating couplings λ′ equal to 1, in some parts of the parameter space of the considered model. © 2005 Elsevier B.V. Abstract

Measurements are presented of inclusive charm and beauty cross sections in e$^+$p collisions at HERA for values of photon virtuality Q$^2$ > 150 GeV$^2$ and of inelasticity 0.1 < y < 0.7. The charm and beauty fractions are determined using a method based on the impact parameter, in the transverse plane, of tracks to the primary vertex, as measured by the H1 vertex detector. The data are divided into four regions in Q$^2$ and Bjorken x, and values for the structure functions $F_2^{c\overline{c}}$ and $F_2^{b\overline{b}}$ are obtained. The results are found to be compatible with the predictions of perturbative quantum chromodynamics.

Abstract

A search for scalar top quarks in R-parity violating supersymmetry is performed in e(+)p collisions at HERA using the H1 detector. The data, taken at roots = 319 GeV and 301 GeV, correspond to an integrated luminosity of 106 pb(-1). The resonant production of scalar top quarks t in positron quark fusion via an R-parity violating Yukawa coupling lambda' is considered with the subsequent bosonic stop decay t --> BW. The R-parity violating decay of the sbottom quark b --> dv(e) and leptonic and hadronic W decays are considered. No evidence for stop production is found in the search for bosonic stop decays nor in a search for the direct R-parity violating decay t --> eq. Mass dependent limits on lambda' are obtained in the framework of the minimal supersymmetric Standard Model. Stop quarks with masses up to 275 GeV can be excluded at the 95% confidence level for a Yukawa coupling of electromagnetic strength. (C) 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract

The proton structure function F-2(x, Q(2)) is measured in inelastic QED Compton scattering using data collected with the H1 detector at HERA. QED Compton events are used to access the kinematic range of very low virtualities of the exchanged photon, Q(2), down to 0.5 GeV2, and Bjorken x up to similar to 0.06, a region which has not been covered previously by inclusive measurements at HERA. The results are in agreement with the measurements from fixed target lepton-nucleon scattering experiments. (C) 2004 Published by Elsevier B.V.

Abstract

Deep-inelastic positron-proton interactions at low values of Bjorken-x down to x \approx 4.10^-5 which give rise to high transverse momentum pi^0 mesons are studied with the H1 experiment at HERA. The inclusive cross section for pi^0 mesons produced at small angles with respect to the proton remnant (the forward region) is presented as a function of the transverse momentum and energy of the pi^0 and of the four-momentum transfer Q^2 and Bjorken-x. Measurements are also presented of the transverse energy flow in events containing a forward pi^0 meson. Hadronic final state calculations based on QCD models implementing different parton evolution schemes are confronted with the data.

Abstract

Cross sections for the production of two isolated muons up to high di-muon masses are measured in ep collisions at HERA with the H1 detector in a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 71 pb-1 at a centre of mass energy of √s=319 GeV. The results are in good agreement with Standard Model predictions, the dominant process being photon-photon interactions. Additional muons or electrons are searched for in events with two high transverse momentum muons using the full data sample corresponding to 114 pb-1, where data at √s=301 GeV and √s=319 GeV are combined. Abstract

The diffractive photoproduction of ρ mesons, e p → e ρ Y, with large momentum transfer squared at the proton vertex, |t|, is studied with the H1 detector at HERA using an integrated luminosity of 20.1 pb-1. The photon-proton centre of mass energy spans the range 75 < W < 95 GeV, the photon virtuality is restricted to Q2 < 0.01 GeV2 and the mass MY of the proton remnant is below 5 GeV. The t dependence of the cross section is measured for the range 1.5 < | t | < 10.0 GeV2 and is well described by a power law, d σ / d | t | ∝ | t |- n. The spin density matrix elements, which provide information on the helicity structure of the interaction, are extracted using measurements of angular distributions of the ρ decay products. The data indicate a violation of s-channel helicity conservation, with contributions from both single and double helicity-flip being observed. Abstract

Cross sections for elastic production of J/Psi mesons in photoproduction and electroproduction are measured in electron proton collisions at HERA using an integrated luminosity of 55 pb^{-1}. Results are presented for photon virtualities Q^2 up to 80 GeV^2. The dependence on the photon-proton centre of mass energy W_{gamma p} is analysed in the range 40 < \Wgp < 305 GeV in photoproduction and 40 < \Wgp < 160 GeV in electroproduction. The \Wgp dependences of the cross sections do not change significantly with Q^2 and can be described by models based on perturbative QCD. Within such models, the data show a high sensitivity to the gluon density of the proton in the domain of low Bjorken x and low Q^2. Differential cross sections d��/dt, where t is the squared four-momentum transfer at the proton vertex, are measured in the range |t, 40 pages, 14 figures, 15 tables

Abstract

Using the deep inelastic e+p and e-p charged and neutral current scattering cross sections previously published, a combined electroweak and QCD analysis is performed to determine electroweak parameters accounting for their correlation with parton distributions. The data used have been collected by the H1 experiment in 1994-2000 and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 117.2 pb-1. A measurement is obtained of the W propagator mass in charged current ep scattering. The weak mixing angle sin 2θW is determined in the on-mass-shell renormalisation scheme. A first measurement at HERA is made of the light quark weak couplings to the Z0 boson and a possible contribution of right-handed isospin components to the weak couplings is investigated. © 2005 Elsevier B.V. Differential cross sections for photoproduction and deep inelastic scattering are presented as a function of several kinematic variables. Leading order QCD simulation programs are compared with the measurements. Models in which the real or virtual photon interacts with a parton of an exchanged pion are able to describe the data. Next-to-leading order perturbative QCD calculations based on pion exchange are found to be in good agreement with the measured cross sections. The fraction of leading neutron dijet events with respect to all dijet events is also determined. The dijet events with a leading neutron have a lower fraction of resolved photon processes than do the inclusive dijet data., 27 pages, 9 figures, 5 tables

Abstract

A measurement of the beauty production cross section in ep collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 319 GeV is presented. The data were collected with the H1 detector at the HERA collider in the years 1999-2000. Events are selected by requiring the presence of jets and muons in the final state. Both the long lifetime and the large mass of b-flavoured hadrons are exploited to identify events containing beauty quarks. Differential cross sections are measured in photoproduction, with photon virtualities Q^2 < 1 GeV^2, and in deep inelastic scattering, where 2 < Q^2 < 100 GeV^2. The results are compared with perturbative QCD calculations to leading and next-to-leading order. The predictions are found to be somewhat lower than the data., 33 pages, 11 figures, 6 tables

Abstract

A measurement of charm and beauty photoproduction at the electron proton collider HERA is presented based on the simultaneous detection of a D*± meson and a muon. The correlation between the D* meson and the muon serves to separate the charm and beauty contributions and the analysis provides comparable sensitivity to both. The total and differential experimental cross sections are compared to LO and NLO QCD calculations. The measured charm cross section is in good agreement with QCD predictions including higher order effects while the beauty cross section is higher. © 2005 Elsevier B.V. Abstract

Inclusive production cross sections are measured in deep inelastic scattering at HERA for meson states composed of a charm quark and a light antiquark or the charge conjugate. The measurements cover the kinematic region of photon virtuality 2 < Q 2 < 100 Gev2, inelasticity 0.05 < y < 0.7, D meson transverse momenta pt(D)≥2.5 Gev and pseudorapidity |η(D)|≤1.5. The identification of the D-meson decays and the reduction of the combinatorial background profit from the reconstruction of displaced secondary vertices by means of the H1 silicon vertex detector. The production of charmed mesons containing the light quarks u,d and s is found to be compatible with a description in which the hard scattering is followed by a factorisable and universal hadronisation process., The European Physical Journal C, 38 (4), ISSN:1434-6044, ISSN:1434-6052

Abstract

A direct search has been made for magnetic monopoles produced in e^+ p collisions at a centre of mass energy of 300 GeV at HERA. The beam pipe surrounding the interaction region in 1995-1997 was investigated using a SQUID magnetometer to look for stopped magnetic monopoles. During this time an integrated luminosity of 62 pb^{-1} was delivered. No magnetic monopoles were observed and charge and mass dependent upper limits on the e^+ p production cross section are set., 23 pages, 11 figures, 1 table

Abstract

Dijet production in deep inelastic ep scattering is investigated in the region of low values of the Bjorken-variable x (10-4 < x < 10-2) and low photon virtualities Q 2 (5 < Q 2 < 100 GeV2). The measured dijet cross sections are compared with perturbative QCD calculations in next-to-leading order. For most dijet variables studied, these calculations can provide a reasonable description of the data over the full phase space region covered, including the region of very low x. However, large discrepancies at low x and low Q 2 are observed for events with small separation in azimuth between the two highest transverse momentum jets. This region of phase space is described better by predictions based on the CCFM evolution equation, which incorporates k t factorized unintegrated parton distributions. Abstract

The cross section for anti-deuteron photoproduction is measured at HERA at a mean centre-of-mass energy of Wγp=200 GeV in the range 0.2 < p T /M < 0.7 and |y| < 0.4, where M, p T and y are the mass, transverse momentum and rapidity of the anti-deuteron in the HERA laboratory frame, respectively. The numbers of anti-deuterons per event are found to be similar in photoproduction to those in central proton-proton collisions at the CERN ISR but much lower than those in central Au-Au collisions at RHIC. The coalescence parameter B 2, which characterizes the likelihood of anti-deuteron production, is measured in photoproduction to be 0.010±0.002±0.001, which is much higher than in Au-Au collisions at a similar nucleon-nucleon centre-of-mass energy. No significant production of particles heavier than deuterons is observed and upper limits are set on the photoproduction cross sections for such particles., The European Physical Journal C, 36 (4), ISSN:1434-6044, ISSN:1434-6052

Abstract

A narrow resonance in D*- p and D*+ pbar invariant mass combinations is observed in inelastic electron-proton collisions at centre-of-mass energies of 300 GeV and 320 GeV at HERA. The resonance has a mass of 3099 \pm 3 (stat.) \pm 5 (syst.) MeV and a measured Gaussian width of 12 \pm 3 (stat.) MeV, compatible with the experimental resolution. The resonance is interpreted as an anti-charmed baryon with a minimal constituent quark composition of uuddcbar, together with the charge conjugate., 20 pages, 7 figures and 2 tables

Abstract

The diffractive photoproduction of J/ψ mesons is measured with the H1 detector at the ep collider HERA using an integrated luminosity of 78 pb -1. The differential cross section dσ(γp → J/ψY)/dt is studied in the range 2 < t < 30 GeV2, where t is the square of the four-momentum transferred at the proton vertex. The cross section is also presented as a function of the photon-proton centre-of-mass energy Wγp in three t intervals, spanning the range 50 < Wγp < 200 GeV. A fast rise of the cross section with Wγp is observed for each t range and the slope for the effective linear Pomeron trajectory is measured to be α′ = -0.0135 ± 0.0074(stat.) ± 0.0051(syst.) GeV-2. The measurements are compared with perturbative QCD models based on BFKL and DGLAP evolution. 24. Deterioration of the quality of packaged potable water (bottled water) exposed to sunlight for a prolonged period: An implication for public health.

Abstract

The exposure of bottled water to sunlight leaches heavy metals into the water, thereby deteriorating its quality and this informed the study. Three plastic bottle brands (n = 100 per brand) were exposed to sunlight for different durations. The leaching of contaminants was exposure duration dependent. The following ranges were recorded for temperature (26.67-29.83 °C), pH (4.73-6.12), conductivity (159.00-298.67 μs/cm), turbidity (0.92-1.22 N.T.U), TDS (98.17-192.77 mg/l), hardness (38.12-78.17 mg/l), Fe (0.01-0.57 mg/l), Mn (BDL - 0.46), Cr (BDL - 0.37 mg/l), Al (BDL - 0.53 mg/l), Cd (0.02-0.21 mg/l), Zn (1.18-9.90 mg/l), Pb (0.03-1.68 mg/l), As (BDL - 1.48 mg/l), and Ni (0.05-1.55 mg/l). Health risk evaluation in all bottled water brands revealed possible Cr, Cd, Pb, As, and Ni toxicity. The carcinogenic risk of Cr, As, and, Ni, indicated potential cancer. Arsenic posed the highest non-carcinogenic risk, while Ni posed the highest carcinogenic risk in all brands after 42 days of exposure. The microbial parameters failed to meet the WHO safety limits.
