Search

New results of measurements of the dependences of the flux of reactor antineutrinos and their spectrum on the distance from the center of the core of the SM-3 reactor (Dimitrovgrad, Russia) in the range from 6 to 12 m are presented. Additional measurements were conducted. The volume of accumulated experimental data was increased nearly by a factor of two. A model-independent analysis was performed on the basis of all data in order to determine the oscillation parameters $$\Delta m_{14}^{2}$$ and $$\sin^{2}2\theta_{14}$$ . The method of a coherent summation of measurement results makes it possible to demonstrate directly the oscillation effect. We observed the oscillation effect at a level of three standard deviations ( $$3.0\sigma$$ ) in the vicinities of parameters values of $$\Delta m_{14}^{2}\approx 7.25$$ eV $${}^{2}$$ and $$\sin^{2}2\theta_{14}\approx 0.26\pm 008\left({3.0}\right)\sigma$$ . Combining the results of the Neutrino-4 experiment with results for the gallium anomaly and for the reactor anomaly, we obtained the following value: $$\sin^{2}2\theta_{14}\approx 0.19\pm 0.04(4.6\sigma)$$ .

The experiment Neutrino-4 started in 2014 with a detector model and continued with a full-scale detector in 2016–2021. In this article, we describe all the steps of the preparatory work on this experiment. We present all results of the Neutrino-4 experiment with increased statistical accuracy provided to date. The experimental setup is constructed to measure the flux and spectrum of the reactor antineutrinos as a function of distance to the center of the active zone of the SM-3 reactor (Dimitrovgrad, Russia) in the range of 6–12 meters. Using all the collected data, we performed a model-independent analysis to determine the oscillation parameters Δm142 and sin22θ14. The method of coherent summation of measurement results allows us to directly demonstrate the oscillation effect. We present the analysis of possible systematic errors and the MC model of the experiment, which considers the possibility of the effect manifestation at the present precision level. As a result of the analysis, we can conclude that at currently available statistical accuracy, we observe the oscillations at the 2.9σ level with the parameters Δm142=(7.3±0.13st±1.16syst) eV2=(7.3±1.17) eV2 and sin22θ=0.36±0.12stat(2.9σ). Monte Carlo based statistical analysis gave an estimation of the confidence level at 2.7σ. We plan to improve the currently working experimental setup and create a completely new setup in order to increase the accuracy of the experiment by 3 times. We also provide a brief analysis of the general experimental situation in the search for sterile neutrinos.

The possibility of experimentally determining the ratio λ of the axial weak-interaction constant GA to the vector weak-interaction constant GV by simultaneously measuring the electron and neutrino asymmetries at the same setup is discussed. The proposed measurement and data-processing procedures are described in detail. The determination of λ by the method in question permits disregarding the possible contribution of the Fierz interference term and dispensing with an accurate measurement of the neutron polarization. It is shown that this method makes it possible to measure λ to a precision at a level of 10−4.

We report Neutrino-4 experiment results of measurements of reactor antineutrinos flux and spectrum dependence on the distance in range 6–12 m from the center of the reactor core. The fit of experimental dependence with the law 1/L2, where L is the distance from the reactor center, gave satisfactory result with goodness of fit 81%. However, we discovered that the experimental neutrino spectrum is different from the calculated one. Using experimental spectrum, we performed the model independent analysis of restrictions on oscillation parameters Δm 14 2 and sin2 2θ14. The results of this analysis exclude area of reactor and gallium anomaly at CL more than 99.7% (>3σ) for values Δm 14 2 0.1. However, we observed an oscillation effect at CL 2.8σ in vicinity of Δm 14 2 Δm 14 2 ≈ 7.3 eV2 and sin2 2θ14 ≈ 0.39. The method of coherent addition of results of measurements, which allows us to directly observe the effect of oscillations, is proposed. The analysis of that effect is presented. In general, it seems that the effect predicted in gallium and reactor experiments is being confirmed but at sufficiently large value of Δm 14 2 . Future prospects of the experiment are discussed.

First results on the energy spectrum and flux of reactor antineutrinos as a function of the distance L from the reactor core, measured in the Neutrino-4 experiment for 6 < L < 12 m, are presented. The flux L‑dependence fits to the 1/L2 form with a statistical significance of ~10% corresponding to 1.64σ, so that the measured spectrum deviates from the 1/L2 law at a confidence level ~90%. The measured energy spectrum deviates from the predicted one at a similar confidence level ~90%. That both deviations are best described with oscillation parameters in the same regions of $$\Delta m_{{14}}^{2} \approx 0.7{\text{-}}0.8$$ eV2and $${{\sin }^{2}}2{{\Theta }_{{14}}} \approx 0.10{\text{-}}0.15$$ boosts the overall confidence level to ~95% (2σ). These results suggest that antineutrinos oscillate to a sterile state, but still fall short of reliably establishing the oscillation phenomenon. At present, the possibility of mimicking the oscillation effect by systematic errors cannot be completely excluded.

Supersource of ultracold neutrons on the basis of superfluid helium is under construction in PNPI NRC KI. It must provide UCN density 2-3 orders of magnitude higher than existing sources. For the new source we propose an experiment on search for neutron–antineutron oscillations based on the storage of ultracold neutrons in a material trap. The sensitivity of the experiment mostly depends on the trap size and the amount of UCN in it. The results of simulations of the designed experimental scheme show that the sensitivity can be increased by ∼ 10–40 times compared to sensitivity of previous experiment depending on the model of neutron reflection from walls.

An experimental search for sterile neutrinos has been carried out at a neutrino facility based on the SM-3 nuclear reactor in Dimitrovgrad, Russia. The movable detector with passive shielding against the external radiation may be positioned at a distance varying between 6 and 12 m from the center of the reactor. The antineutrino flux has for the first time been measured using a movable detector placed close to the antineutrino source. The accuracy of the measurements is largely restricted by the cosmic background. The results of the measurements performed at small and large distances are analyzed in terms of the sterile-neutrino model parameters Δm 14 2 and sin22θ14.

A laboratory for searching for oscillations of reactor antineutrinos has been created based on the SM-3 reactor in order to approach the problem of the possible existence of a sterile neutrino. The multisection detector prototype with a liquid scintillator volume of 350 L was installed in mid-2015. This detector can move inside the passive shield in a range of 6–11 m from the active core of the reactor. The antineutrino flux was measured for the first time at these short distances from the active core of the reactor by the movable detector. The measurements with the multisection detector prototype demonstrated that it is possible to measure the antineutrino flux from the reactor in the complicated conditions of cosmic background on the Earth’s surface.

All results of the neutron lifetime measurements performed in the last 20 years with the UCN storage method are in a good agreement. These results are consistent with the latest most accurate measurements of the neutron decay asymmetry within the Standard Model. However, there is a significant discrepancy at $3.6\sigma$ (1% of the decay probability) level between the averaged result of the storage method experiments and the most accurate measurements performed with the beam method. This article addresses the possible causes of such discrepancy. We focused on finding the spectrum of possible systematic corrections in the beam experiment. Four separate sources of the systematic errors which had not been properly addressed in articles dedicated to the beam technique were considered. Two of those sources are related with the motion of protons in an electromagnetic field and the elastic scattering by the residual gas. The third error concerns proton loss in the dead layer of the detector. It is shown the corresponding correction requires a more detailed analysis than that given in the papers describing the beam measurement method. The fourth source of the systematic error is the charge exchange process on the residual gas. The influence of that process was neglected in the beam method experiments. We present arguments that careful analysis of this issue is necessary since the proposed proton losses correction decreases the measured lifetime. For the problem of proton charge exchange on a residual gas, the spectrum of possible corrections is investigated. It is shown that for an accurate calculation of the correction, it is necessary to directly measure the concentration and composition of the residual gas inside the proton trap. In connection with the question of possible existence of sterile neutrino the laboratory on the basis of SM-3 reactor was created to search for oscillations of reactor antineutrino. A prototype of a neutrino detector with scintillator volume of 400 l can be moved at the distance of 6–11 m from the reactor core. The measurements of background conditions have been made. It is shown that the main experimental problem is associated with cosmic radiation background. Test measurements of dependence of a reactor antineutrino flux on the distance from a reactor core have been made. The prospects of search for oscillations of reactor antineutrino at short distances are discussed.

A research program aimed at studying fundamental interactions by means of ultracold and polarized cold neutrons at the GEK-4-4′ channel of the PIK reactor is presented. The apparatus to be used includes a source of cold neutrons in the heavy-water reflector of the reactor, a source of ultracold neutrons based on superfluid helium and installed in a cold-neutron beam extracted from the GEK-4 channel, and a number of experimental facilities in neutron beams. An experiment devoted to searches for the neutron electric dipole moment and an experiment aimed at a measurement the neutron lifetime with the aid of a large gravitational trap are planned to be performed in a beam of ultracold neutrons. An experiment devoted to measuring neutron-decay asymmetries with the aid of a superconducting solenoid is planned in a beam of cold polarized neutrons from the GEK-4′ channel. The second ultracold-neutron source and an experiment aimed at measuring the neutron lifetime with the aid of a magnetic trap are planned in the neutron-guide system of the GEK-3 channel. In the realms of neutrino physics, an experiment intended for sterile-neutrino searches is designed. The state of affairs around the preparation of the experimental equipment for this program is discussed.

Sources of possible systematic errors are analyzed, and their influence on the measurement results is estimated. The ways and prospects of increasing accuracy of the experiment are discussed.

In this work, the double chamber magnetic resonance spectrometer of the Petersburg Nuclear Physics Institute (PNPI) designed to measure the neutron electric dipole moment (EDM) is briefly described. A method for long storage of polarized ultracold neutrons in a resonance space with a superposed electric field collinear to the leading magnetic field is used. The results of the measurements carried out on the ILL reactor (Grenoble, France) are interpreted as the upper limit of the value of neutron EDM |dn| < 5.5 × 10–26e cm at the 90% confidence level.

In view of the possibility of the existence of a sterile neutrino, test measurements of the dependence of the reactor antineutrino flux on the distance from the reactor core has been performed on SM-2 reactor with the Neutrino-2 detector model in the range of 6–11 m. Prospects of the search for reactor antineutrinos at short distances have been discussed.

A double-chamber magnetic resonance spectrometer with prolonged holding of ultracold neutrons has been employed. The results determine the upper limit for EDM neutron quantity equal to |d n | < 5.5 × 10−26 e cm at a 90% confidence level.

At present, the possible existence of a sterile neutrino having a significantly smaller cross section of interaction with a substance than, for example, electronic antineutrinos from a reactor is being widely discussed. It has been suggested that, due to reactor antineutrino transition into a sterile state, one can observe both the oscillation effect at short distances (5–15 m) from the reactor and a deficiency of the reactor antineutrino flux at large distances. We have investigated the possibility of performing experiments in search for reactor antineutrino oscillations into a sterile state on research reactors. A model experiment has been carried out on a 16-MW WWR-M reactor at the Petersburg Nuclear Physics Institute with a view to implementing a full-scale experiment using a 100-MW SM-3 reactor at the Research Institute of Atomic Reactors (RIAR). Background conditions of these experiments have been studied for both reactors. It is concluded that the implementation of a full-scale Neutrino-4 experiment on the SM-3 reactor at the RIAR is possible.

We report a new measurement of the neutron electric dipole moment with the PNPI EDM spectrometer using the ultracold neutron source PF2 at the research reactor of the ILL. The geometric configuration of the experimental setup was developed based on the MC simulations of neutrons trajectories into the trap. To calculate detector efficiency the GEANT4 model of the detector was created.

The comparison of results of cross section measurements by the different methods can provide useful information on existence of long-range interaction. The total neutron cross sections of He, Ne, Ar, Kr, and Xe were measured using a method of ultracold neutrons. Measurements with ultra cold neutrons confirm the discrepancy between coherent cross-section of scattering for He measured by a neutron interferometer and scattering cross-section measured by the transmission method. The discrepancy makes up 5.3 standard deviations.

The “Neutrino-4” experiment for the 100-MW SM-3 reactor has been developed with the aim of testing the reactor antineutrino anomaly at Petersburg Nuclear Physics Institute. The advantages of this reactor for studying the antineutrino anomaly are (i) a low background level and (ii) small dimensions (35 × 42 × 42 cm) of the active zone. Operation of a position-sensitive antineutrino detector comprising five working sections and moving so as to cover a region of distances within 6–13 m from the active zone has been simulated by the Monte-Carlo method. The range of experimental sensitivity with respect to the oscillation parameters Δm 2 and sin22θ is determined, which will make it possible to confirm the hypothesis of antineutrino oscillations into a sterile state.

The measurements with full-scale detector with liquid scintillator volume of 3 m^3 (5x10 sections) was started only in June, 2016. The possibility of using a trap with ultracold neutrons (UCNs) as a detector of dark matter particles with long-range forces is considered. The main advantage of this method is the possibility of detecting recoil energies ∼10−7 eV. The limitations on the parameters of the interaction potential in the form \(\phi (r) = a\frac{{e^{ - r/b} }} {r}\) for dark matter particles and neutrons at different values of the dark matter density on the Earth are represented. It is shown that the suggestion about the long-range character of the interaction between dark matter particles leads to a significant increase in the elastic scattering cross section at low energies. As a consequence, dark matter can be captured and accumulated by the terrestrial gravitational field. The first experimental limitations on the existence of long-range dark matter on the Earth are presented.

A method of using a gravitational spectrometer to search for long-range forces between neutrons and atoms is proposed. The constraints on the strength of long range forces within the range of 10−10–10−4 cm can be obtained from the experiments on measurements of the total cross section of interaction of ultracold neutrons with atoms of noble gases (He, Ne, Ar, 86Kr) and the data on the coherent neutron scattering length of the nucleus. The first result of such type analysis is presented.

Experiments were carried out on how laser radiation affects both the shape of an escaping plasma jet and the formation of a luminous object after the jet has been ejected from the electrode. It is shown that a 1-mW laser beam with an intensity as low as 0.001 W/cm2 can change the shape of the jet and its propagation direction. In applying laser diagnostic methods, it is necessary to take into account possible change in the configuration of such objects when they interact with laser radiation. It is confirmed that the temperature of a luminous object decreases sharply with time.

The explosive emission of electrons and ectons plays a fundamental role in electric discharges of various types. We use these fundamental phenomena to show that, in electric discharges in the region of the functioning of ectons, electric fields on the order of atomic fields appear, where ions can be accelerated to energies that lead to nuclear reactions. The mechanisms that determine the possibility of nuclear reactions have very fine tunings, which are difficult to attain using empirical approaches. We show this and arrive at the conclusion that the so-called cold synthesis is actually Coulomb synthesis. We suggest to call the mechanism considered in this work and leading to nuclear reaction “Coulomb synthesis.”

The search for an electric dipole moment (EDM) of the neutron is a crucial test for theoretical particle physics models with violation of time and spatial invariance. A new experiment recently has been carried out at the High-Flux Reactor at Institut Laue-Langevin, using the upgraded double-chamber magnetic resonance spectrometer developed at Petersburg Nuclear Physics Institute. The result is interpreted as an upper limit on the value of the neutron EDM, $|{d}_{n}|l5.5\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{10}^{\ensuremath{-}26}{e}_{}\phantom{\rule{4pt}{0ex}}\mathrm{cm}$ (90% C.L.). This article provides a detailed description of the setup and experimental procedures, along with a discussion of possibilities for further improvement of the experimental accuracy.

Accurate calculations of the binding energies, the hyperfine splitting, the bound-electron g-factor, and the parity nonconservation effects in heavy few-electron ions are considered. The calculations include the relativistic, quantum electrodynamic (QED), electron-correlation, and nuclear effects. The theoretical results are compared with available experimental data. We describe the production, characterization and performance of magnetron-sputtered Be coatings on aluminum, copper and stainless steel substrates. The coating thickness is typically 300 nm. Small samples were characterized by means of Optical Microscopy (OM), Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) and X-ray induced Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) and Elastic Recoil Detection Analysis (ERDA). The coating quality and adhesion following thermal cycling and neutron irradiation were tested with respect to future applications as storage containers in Ultracold Neutron (UCN) sources. The fractional uncoated area was determined to be 10−4 to 10−5 by OM and XPS. These results were confirmed by foil transmission measurements with UCN in the energy range 180 to 230 neV. The storage time of a 250 l Be-coated Cu container was determined for UCN energies up to 60 neV at room temperature and around 90 K and the wall loss factor η extracted. We obtained η (90 K)=2.7×10−5 and η(300 K)=1.1×10−4 in good agreement with previously published results.

We are going to use a polarized cold neutron beam and an axial magnetic field in the shape of a bottle formed by the superconducting magnetic system. Such configuration of magnetic field allows to extract the decay electrons inside a well-defined solid angle with a high accuracy. The electrostatic cylinder with a potential of 25 kV defines the detected region of neutron decays. The protons, which come from this region will be accelerated and registered by a proton detector. The use of coincidences between the electron and proton signals allows in considerably suppressing the background. The final accuracy of A -asymmetry will be determined by the accuracy of the neutron beam polarization measurement, which is at the level of (1–2)×10 −3 as it was shown in previous studies.

Present experimental and astrophysical limits do not exclude that the neutron (n) oscillation into mirror neutron ( $$n'$$ ), a sterile state exactly degenerate in mass with the neutron, can be a very fast process, in fact faster than the neutron decay itself, in which case it would have very interesting implications in cosmology and astrophysics. This process is sensitive to the magnetic field. Namely, if the mirror magnetic field $$\mathbf {B}'$$ exists at the Earth, $$n{-}n'$$ oscillation probability can be suppressed or resonantly amplified by the applied magnetic field $$\mathbf {B}$$ , depending on its strength and on the angle $$\beta $$ between $$\mathbf {B}$$ and $$\mathbf {B}'$$ . We present the results of ultra-cold neutron storage measurements aiming to check the anomalies observed in previous experiments which could be a signal for $$n{-}n'$$ oscillation in the presence of mirror magnetic field $$B'\sim 0.1$$ G. From the analysis of the experimental data new lower limits on $$n{-}n'$$ oscillation time as a function of $$B'$$ were obtained, assuming that the mirror magnetic field is constant in time: $$\tau _{nn'} > 17$$ s (95 % C.L.) for any $$B'$$ between 0.08 and 0.17 G, and $$\tau _{nn'}/\sqrt{\cos \beta } > 27$$ s (95 % C.L.) for any $$B'$$ in the interval ( $$0.06\div 0.25$$ ) G.

The main goal of experiment "Neutrino-4" is to search for the oscillation of reactor antineutrino to a sterile state. Experiment is conducted on SM-3 research reactor (Dimitrovgrad, Russia). Data collection with full-scale detector with liquid scintillator volume of 3m3 was started in June 2016. We present the results of measurements of reactor antineutrino flux dependence on the distance in range 6– 12 meters from the center of the reactor. At that distance range, the fit of experimental dependence has good agreement with the law 1/L2. Which means, at achieved during the data collecting accuracy level oscillations to sterile state are not observed. In addition, the spectrum of prompt signals of neutrino-like events at different distances have been presented.

We discuss the present status of auantum electrodynamics (QED) investigations of electron correlations in second order in α for heavy fewelectron atoms. A complete evaluation of all two-electron QED contributions of order α2 is presented for the 2p½-2s transition in high-Z Li-like ions. In particular, the two-photon exchange correction beyond the Breit approximation is calculated for highly charged ions with Z < 50. The total theoretical value of 280.44(9)(20) eV is found for the 2p½-2s transition energy in Li-like U.

The present status of calculations of quantum electrodynamical, nuclear, and interelectronic-interaction corrections to the binding energies in heavy few-electron ions is reviewed. The currently available theoretical results for the Lamb shift in H-, He-, and Li-like ions are compared with recent experimental data. A special attention is focused on testing quantum electrodynamics in a strong electric field.

Third-order interelectronic-interaction correction to the energies of (1 s ) 2 2 s and (1 s ) 2 2 p 1/2 states of high- Z lithiumlike ions is evaluated within the Breit approximation in the range 20⩽ Z ⩽100. The calculation is carried out using both the relativistic configuration-interaction method and perturbation theory. The correction is shown to be important for the comparison of theory and experiment.

A rigorous QED calculation of the two-photon exchange corrections to the 2p(1/2)- 2s transition energy in Li-like high- Z ions is presented. The contribution due to an exchange by more than two photons is evaluated within the Breit approximation. The resulting theoretical value of the 2p(1/2)- 2s transition energy in Li-like uranium is found to be 280.44(20) eV.

The interelectronic-interaction corrections of the second order in 1/Z to the ground-state hyperfine splitting in lithiumlike ions are evaluated. The calculations are performed by using the relativistic configuration-interaction method and perturbation theory. In addition, the nuclear magnetization distribution effect on the interelectronic-interaction correction of the first order in 1/Z is evaluated within the single-particle nuclear model. The calculations provide an improvement in the theoretical predictions for the hyperfine splitting in lithiumlike ions. PACS Nos.: 31.30Gs, 31.30Jv

The present status of calculations of the hyperfine splitting and the transition probability between the hyperfine splitting components in hydrogen and lithium like ions is discussed. The results of the calculations are compared with recent experimental data. A special attention is focused on the hyperfine splitting in hydrogen like lead and lithium like bismuth. It is shown that the theoretical prediction for the ground state hyperfine splitting in lead based on the single particle nuclear model for the Bohr-Weisskopf effect is in fair agreement with experiment. The theoretical prediction for the ground state hyperfine splitting in lithium like bismuth is improved due to more accurate calculations of the interelectronic interaction, QED, and nuclear corrections.

We analyse a change of a deficit of reactor antineutrinos at distances smaller than 100 m by changing the lifetime of the neutron from tau_n = 885.7 s to tau_n = 879.6 s, calculated for the axial coupling constants lambda = - 1.2694 and lambda = - 1.2750, respectively, in order to get a result corresponding the new world average value tau_n = 880.1(1.1) s. We calculate the angular distribution and cross section for the inverse beta-decay, taking into account the contributions of the "weak magnetism" and the neutron recoil to next-to-leading order in the large baryon mass expansion and the radiative corrections of order alpha/\pi ~ 10^(-3), calculated to leading order in the large baryon mass expansion. We obtain an increase of a deficit of reactor antineutrinos in of about 0.734%., Comment: 28 pages, 5 figures, The paper is revised. We have fixed the origin of the discrepancy between radiative corrections to the correlation coefficient B, calculated in our paper and by Fukugita and Kubota Ref.[10] and Raha, Myhrer and Kudobera Ref.[11]. The problem of possible application of an ultracold neutron (UCN) trap as a detector of dark matter particles with long-range radius of forces has been considered. Transmission of small recoil energy in scattering is a characteristic of long-range forces. The main advantage of the ultracold neutron technique lies in possibility of detecting recoil energy as small as $10^{-7}$ eV. Here are presented constraints on the interaction potential parameters: $U(r)=a r^{-1} e^{-r/\lambda}$ for dark matter particles and neutrons, as well as on the density value of long-range dark matter on the Earth. The possible mechanism of accumulation of long-range dark matter on the Earth surface is considered and the factor of density increase on the Earth surface is evaluated. The results of the first experiment on search of astronomical day variation of ultracold neutron storage time are under discussion.

The possibility of using a trap with ultracold neutrons as a detector of dark matter particles with long-range forces is considered. The basic advantage of the proposed method lies in possibility of detecting the recoil energy 10-7 eV. The restrictions on parameters of Yukawa type interaction potential between dark matter particles and a neutron are presented for different dark matter densities on the Earth. The assumption concerned with long-range interaction of dark matter particles and ordinary matter leads to a substantial enhancement of cross section at low energy. Consequently, there arises a possibility of capture and accumulation of dark matter in a gravitational field of the Earth. Rough estimation of accumulation of low-energy dark matter on the Earth is discussed. The first experimental restrictions for existence of dark matter with long-range forces on the Earth are presented., 17 pages, 6 figures
