Abstract: The analyzing powers for neutron charge exchange nA → pX reactions on nuclei have been measured on C, CH2 and Cu targets at incident neutron momenta 3.0 - 4.2 GeV/c by detecting one charged particle in forward direction. The polarized neutron measurements are the first of their kind. The experiment was performed using the Nuclotron accelerator in JINR Dubna, where polarized neutrons and protons were obtained from breakup of a polarized deuteron beam which has a maximum momentum of 13 GeV/c. The polarimeter ALPOM2 was used to obtain the analyzing power dependence on the transverse momentum of the final-state nucleon. These data have been used to estimate the figure of merit of a proposed experiment at Jefferson Laboratory to measure the recoiling neutron polarization in the quasi-elastic 2 H(e, e′n) reaction, which yields information on the charge and magnetic elastic form factors of the neutron.

Abstract: The results of the SERP-E-184 experiment at the U-70 accelerator (IHEP, Protvino) are presented. Interactions of the 70GeV proton beam with carbon, silicon and lead targets were studied to detect decays of charmed $D^{0}$, $\bar{D}^{0}$, $D^{+}$, $D^{-}$ mesons and $\Lambda_{c}^{+}$ baryon near their production threshold. Measurements of lifetimes and masses have shown a good agreement with PDG data. The inclusive cross-sections of charm production and their A-dependences have been obtained. The yields of these particles are compared with the theoretical predictions and the data of other experiments. The measured cross-section of the total open charm production ( $\sigma_{\rm tot}(c\bar{c}) = 7.1 \pm 2.3({\rm stat}) \pm 1.4({\rm syst})$ μb/nucleon) at the collision c.m. energy $\surd s = 11.8$ GeV is well above the QCD model predictions. The contributions of different kinds of charmed particles to the total cross-section of the open charm production in proton-nucleus interactions vary with energy.

3. Studying the counting rate capability of a glass multigap resistive plate chamber at an increased operating temperature

Abstract: It is shown that a multigap resistive plate chamber made of commercial float glass is capable of sustaining high counting rates at an increased operating temperature. Two glass chambers were investigated on the test beamline of the U-70 accelerator at the Institute for High Energy Physics. The required radiation flux density at the detector was produced by means of radioactive sources. The time resolution of 80 ps or better was attained at a rate of ∼20 kHz/cm2 and an operating temperature of 45°C.

Abstract: Experimental and theoretical studies of direct photon production in hadronic collisions essentially expand our insights in multiparticle production mechanisms. These photons are useful probes to investigate nuclear matter at all stages of the interaction. Soft photons play a particular role in these studies. Until now we have no explanation for the experimentally observed excess of soft photons. These photons have low transverse momenta $ p_{T} < 0.1$ GeV/c, $ \vert x\vert < 0.01$ . In this domain their yield exceeds the theoretical estimates by 5-8 times. The registration of soft photons at Nuclotron (LHEP, JINR) has been carried out by the electromagnetic calorimeter built by the SVD-2 Collaboration. Soft photon electromagnetic calorimeter was tested at U-70, IHEP (Protvino). For the first time the soft photon yield at interactions of 3.5A GeV/c per nucleon deuterium and lithium beams has been measured. The obtained energy spectra confirm the increased yield of soft photons with their energy less than 50MeV (in the laboratory system) in comparison with theoretical predictions and agree with previous experiments at high-energy interactions. It is planned to continue soft photon study at the future accelerator complex NICA with heavy-ion beams.

Abstract: The use of a silicon photomultiplier (SiPM) has made it possible to produce a compact target composed of 16 active elements capable of measuring ionization losses in each element. The accuracy of a single ionization measurement is sufficient to allow discrimination between single- and three-track signals in 90% of events. A special ΛЭ-80 processor has been developed using the programmable decision lookup table method for trigger signal generation, which is implemented in Altera programmable logic devices. The time it takes for the special processor to produce a trigger signal is 80 ns or less. The possibility of separating reactions with neutral strange particles has been demonstrated using vast experimental statistics.

Abstract: Charged particles and photons have been measured in central Pb + Pb collisions at 158 A GeV in a common (eta-phi)-phase space region in the WA98 experiment at the CERN SPS. The measured distributions have been analyzed to quantify the frequency with which phase space regions of varying sizes have either small or large neutral pion fraction. The measured results are compared with VENUS model simulated events and with mixed events. Events with both large and small charged-neutral fluctuations are observed to occur more frequently than expected statistically, as deduced from mixed events, or as predicted by model simulations, with the difference becoming more prominent with decreasing size of the A Delta eta-Delta phi region. Abstract: A calorimeter for detecting hadrons in the energy range 10–100 GeV is described. It is used at CERN in the NA58 (COMPASS) experiment aimed at studying the nucleon structure and spectroscopy measurements of charmed particles. The calorimeter is composed of 480 modules with a cross section of 15×15 cm2, assembled in a matrix with dimensions of 4.2×3 m2 and a central window of area 1.2×0.6 m2. In each module are 40 iron and scintillator layers of a total thickness of 4.8 interaction lengths. The energy resolution of the calorimeter for hadrons (pions) and electrons and the spatial resolution, determined on the test beams, are $\frac{{\sigma _\pi (E)}}{{E[GeV]}} = \frac{{59.4 \pm 2.9}}{{\sqrt E }} \oplus (7.6 \pm 0.4)\% ;\frac{{\sigma _e (E)}}{{E[GeV]}} = \frac{{24.6 \pm 0.7}}{{\sqrt E }} \oplus (0.7 \pm 0.4)\% $, and σx,y ≈ 15 mm, respectively. The average value of the e/π ratio that characterizes the amplitude responses of the calorimeter to electrons and pions with equal energies from the above range is 1.2 ± 0.1. This study was performed at the JINR Laboratory for Particle Physics.

Abstract: An accurate data base for the analyzing power of thick CH2 analyzers for high energy protons has been at the basis of several research efforts in a number of laboratories. Starting in the late eighties such data were collected at SATURNE in Saclay, and with the Synchrophasotron in Dubna, and led to an extensive program of study of polarization phenomena in pd interaction, either backward elastic scattering or breakup [1–6]. At about the same time it became evident that measuring polarization observables in elastic ep was going to be the best approach to determine the form factors of the proton, GEp and GMp, as had been predicted by Akhiezer and Rekalo [7].

Abstract: The azimuthal distributions of photons and charged particles with respect to the event plane are investigated as a function of centrality in Pb-208 + Pb-208 collisions at 158 (.) A GeV/c in the WA98 experiment at the CERN SPS. The anisotropy of the azimuthal distributions is characterized using a Fourier analysis. For both the photon and charged particle distributions the first two Fourier coefficients are observed to decrease with increasing centrality. The observed anisotropies of the photon distributions compare well with the expectations from the charged particle measurements for all centralities.

The prototype has been tested with high energy muon beam of the U-70 accelerator at IHEP. The results of the beam test for different types of photo multipliers and light guides are presented. Abstract: A measurement of direct photon production in {sup 208}Pb+ {sup 208}Pb collisions at 158A GeV has been carried out in the CERN WA98 experiment. The invariant yield of direct photons in central collisions is extracted as a function of transverse momentum in the interval 0.5 1.5 GeV/c . The result constitutes the first observation of direct photons in ultrarelativistic heavy-ion collisions. It could be significant for diagnosis of quark-gluon-plasma formation.

Abstract: Recent results of the WA98 experiment with Pb induced reactions at 158. A GeV are presented. The scaling properties of the transverse energy and the charged particle multiplicity at midrapidity with the number of participants is studied. Neutral pion spectra are compared to hydrodynamical parameterizations. The analysis of collective flow at target rapidity and at midrapidity is presented. The status of the study of direct photons and the search for isospin fluctuations is discussed.

Abstract: Anisotropic transverse flow has been studied with a magnetic spectrometer at midrapidity and the Plastic Ball detector at target rapidity in the WA98 experiment. Our preliminary results show the existence of directed and elliptic flow in semi-central Pb+Pb collisions. The magnitude of the directed flow is found to be significantly smaller than those observed at the AGS energies.

Abstract: Measurements of direct photon production in p + Pb and p + C collisions at root(NN)-N-s = 17.4 GeV are presented. Upper limits on the direct photon yield as a function of p(T) are derived and compared to the results for Pb + Pb collisions at root(NN)-N-s = 17.3 GeV. The production of the eta meson, which is an important input to the direct photon signal extraction, has been determined in the eta -> 2 gamma channel for p + C collisions at root(NN)-N-s = 17.4 GeV. Abstract: Measurements of the polarization of protons produced in the inclusive proton-nucleus reaction p+ A →p′+X at laboratory angles 95° ( A = 12) and 158° ( A = 9, 12, 96) are reported on. The polarization is found equal to (10–14)% at 95° and (2–4)% at 158° and changes weakly in the 17–64 GeV range. The data at 158° show that the polarization has a tendency to decrease with increasing A .

Abstract: The differential cross sections of π − and π + meson production at a laboratory angle of 159° in collisions of 15–65 GeV protons with Be, C, Al, Ti, Mo and W targets are measured. The data are presented in the tables for Lorentz-invariant cross sections over the momentum range of pions from 0.25 to 0.95 GeV/ c . The slopes (“temperatures”) of a cumulative part of the pion spectra (the pion kinetic energy is >0.35 GeV) increase by 15–20% with changing A from 9 up to 184. Some discrepancy in the E -dependence of the temperature of the cumulative pion spectra is observed in the high-energy region studied, namely the temperature at 15–65 GeV, taking its slow rise over this range into account, contradicts that at 400 GeV.

Abstract: Neutral pion transverse momentum spectra were measured in $p+\mathrm{C}$ and $p+\mathrm{Pb}$ collisions at $\sqrt{{s}_{NN}}=17.4\text{ }\text{ }\mathrm{GeV}$ at midrapidity ($2.3\ensuremath{\lesssim}{\ensuremath{\eta}}_{\mathrm{lab}}\ensuremath{\lesssim}3.0$) over the range $0.7\ensuremath{\lesssim}{p}_{T}\ensuremath{\lesssim}3.5\text{ }\text{ }\mathrm{GeV}/c$. The spectra are compared to ${\ensuremath{\pi}}^{0}$ spectra measured in $\mathrm{Pb}+\mathrm{Pb}$ collisions at $\sqrt{{s}_{NN}}=17.3\text{ }\text{ }\mathrm{GeV}$ in the same experiment. For a wide range of $\mathrm{Pb}+\mathrm{Pb}$ centralities (${N}_{\mathrm{part}}\ensuremath{\lesssim}300$), the yield of ${\ensuremath{\pi}}^{0}$'s with ${p}_{T}\ensuremath{\gtrsim}2\text{ }\text{ }\mathrm{GeV}/c$ is larger than or consistent with the $p+\mathrm{C}$ or $p+\mathrm{Pb}$ yields scaled with the number of nucleon-nucleon collisions (${N}_{\mathrm{coll}}$), while for central $\mathrm{Pb}+\mathrm{Pb}$ collisions with ${N}_{\mathrm{part}}\ensuremath{\gtrsim}350$, the ${\ensuremath{\pi}}^{0}$ yield is suppressed.

Abstract: The effect of the final state Coulomb interaction on particles produced in Pb+Pb collisions at 158 A GeV/c has been investigated in the WA98 experiment through the study of the pi-/pi+ and K-/K+ ratios measured as a function of transverse mass. While the ratio for kaons shows no significant transverse mass dependence, the pi-/pi+ ratio is enhanced at small transverse mass values with an enhancement that increases with centrality. A silicon pad detector located near the target is used to estimate the contribution of hyperon decays to the pi-/pi+ ratio. The comparison of results with predictions of the RQMD model in which the Coulomb interaction has been incorporated allows to place constraints on the time of the pion freeze-out., Comment: 9 pages, 12 figures

Abstract: Directed and elliptic flow of inclusive photons near mid-rapidity in $158 $A GeV Pb+Pb collisions has been studied. The data have been obtained with the photon spectrometer LEDA of the WA98 experiment at the CERN SPS. The flow strength has been measured for various centralities as a function of $p_T$ and rapidity over $0.18 < p_T < 1.5 \mathrm{GeV}/c$ and $2.3 < y < 2.9$. The angular anisotropy has been studied relative to an event plane obtained in the target fragmentation region that shows the elliptic flow to be in-plane. The elliptic flow has also been studied using two-particle correlations and shown to give similar results. A small directed flow component is observed. Both the directed and elliptic flow strengths increase with $p_T$. The photon flow results are used to estimate the corresponding neutral pion flow., 28 pages, 10 figures

Abstract: Results on the study of localized fluctuations in the multiplicity of charged particles and photons produced in 158A GeV/c Pb+Pb collisions are presented for varying centralities. The charged versus neutral particle multiplicity correlations in common phase space regions of varying azimuthal sizes are analyzed by two different methods. Various types of mixed events are constructed to probe fluctuations arising from different sources. The measured results are compared to those from simulations and from mixed events. The comparison indicates the presence of nonstatistical fluctuations in both the charged particle and photon multiplicities in limited azimuthal regions. However, no correlated charged-neutral fluctuations, a possible signature of formation of disoriented chiral condensates, are observed. An upper limit on the production of disoriented chiral condensates is set.

Abstract: Several hadronic observables have been studied in central 158A GeV Pb+Pb collisions using data measured by the WA98 experiment at CERN: single pi(-) and K- production, as well as two- and three-pion interferometry. The Wiedemann-Heinz hydrodynamical model has been fitted to the pion spectrum, giving an estimate of the temperature and transverse flow velocity. Bose-Einstein correlations between two identified pi(-) have been analyzed as a function of k(T), using two different parametrizations. The results indicate that the source does not have a strictly boost invariant expansion or spend time in a long-lived intermediate phase. A comparison between data and a hydrodynamical based simulation shows very good agreement for the radii parameters as a function of k(T). The pion phase-space density at freeze-out has been measured, and agrees well with the Tomasik-Heinz model. A large pion chemical potential close to the condensation limit of m(pi) seems to be excluded. The three-pion Bose-Einstein interferometry shows a substantial contribution of the genuine three-pion correlation, but not quite as large as expected for a fully chaotic and symmetric source.

Abstract: Event-by-event fluctuations in the multiplicities of charged particles and photons, and the total transverse energy in 158A GeV Pb+Pb collisions are studied for a wide range of centralities. For narrow centrality bins the multiplicity and transverse energy distributions are found to be near perfect Gaussians. The effect of detector acceptance on the multiplicity fluctuations has been studied and demonstrated to follow statistical considerations. The centrality dependence of the charged particle multiplicity fluctuations in the measured data has been found to agree reasonably well with those obtained from a participant model. However, for photons the multiplicity fluctuations have been found to be lower compared to those obtained from a participant model. The multiplicity and transverse energy fluctuations have also been compared to those obtained from the VENUS event generator.

Abstract: Study of elliptic emission for identified particles has been performed in 158A GeV Pb+Pb collisions near mid-rapidity region. Our preliminary results indicate the existence of the in-plane elliptic emission for {pi}{sup +} and proton, and out-of-plane elliptic emission for K+ in semi-central collisions. In addition, two-pion interferometry is studied as a function of the pair direction relative to the reaction plane.

Abstract: We have studied the azimuthal angle distributions of identified charged particles near mid-rapidity region in semi-central Pb+Pb collisions at SPS energies. Our preliminary results show that π+ mesons and protons seem to be emitted in the reaction plane, while out-of-plane for K+ mesons. This phenomenon might be explained by the existence of another possible effect such as in-medium potential as well as the collective motion.
