1. First Measurement of a Long-Lived π+π− Atom Lifetime

Abstract: The adapted DIRAC experiment at the CERN PS accelerator observed for the first time long-lived hydrogenlike π+π- atoms, produced by protons hitting a beryllium target. A part of these atoms crossed the gap of 96 mm between the target and a 2.1 μm thick platinum foil, in which most of them dissociated. Analyzing the observed number of atomic pairs, nAL=436-61+157|tot, the lifetime of the 2p state is found to be τ2p=(0.45-0.30+1.08|tot)×10-11 s, not contradicting the corresponding QED 2p state lifetime τ2pQED=1.17×10-11 s. This lifetime value is three orders of magnitude larger than our previously measured value of the π+π- atom ground state lifetime τ=(3.15-0.26+0.28|tot)×10-15 s. Further studies of long-lived π+π- atoms will allow us to measure energy differences between p and s atomic states and so to discriminate between the isoscalar and isotensor ππ scattering lengths with the aim to check QCD predictions.

Abstract: The DIRAC spectrometer installed at CERN PS was upgraded in order to study simultaneously A2π and AπK atoms, namely the bound states of two π mesons, and of π and K mesons, respectively. The detector system can now accept a high intensity beam of 2–6×1011 primary protons per second. The electronics and the data-acquisition system can handle a very large amount of data to identify π, K, p, e and µ, allowing the selection of ππ and πK pairs in the offline analysis. The resolution of the longitudinal and transverse components of the relative momentum Q of each meson pair in their center-of-mass system with respect to the direction of the pair was substantially improved. The analysis of their distributions allowed an reliable separation between the meson pairs originating from hadronic atoms and the backgrounds permitting the measurement of the lifetimes of hadronic atoms in the ground state and π–π, π–K s-wave scattering lengths. The upgraded setup also allowed the study of the long-lived excited states of ππ atoms.

Abstract: After having announced the statistically significant observation ($5.6\ensuremath{\sigma}$) of the new exotic $\ensuremath{\pi}K$ atom, the DIRAC experiment at the CERN proton synchrotron presents the measurement of the corresponding atom lifetime, based on the full $\ensuremath{\pi}K$ data sample: $\ensuremath{\tau}=(5.{5}_{\ensuremath{-}2.8}^{+5.0})\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{10}^{\ensuremath{-}15}\text{ }\text{ }\mathrm{s}$. By means of a precise relation ($\ensuremath{\approx}1%$) between atom lifetime and scattering length, the following value for the $S$-wave isospin-odd $\ensuremath{\pi}K$ scattering length ${a}_{0}^{\ensuremath{-}}=\frac{1}{3}({a}_{1/2}\ensuremath{-}{a}_{3/2})$ has been derived: $|{a}_{0}^{\ensuremath{-}}|=(0.07{2}_{\ensuremath{-}0.020}^{+0.031}){M}_{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{\ensuremath{-}1}$.

Abstract: The observation of hydrogenlike πK atoms, consisting of π^{-}K^{+} or π^{+}K^{-} mesons, is presented. The atoms are produced by 24 GeV/c protons from the CERN PS accelerator, interacting with platinum or nickel foil targets. The breakup (ionization) of πK atoms in the same targets yields characteristic πK pairs, called "atomic pairs," with small relative momenta Q in the pair center-of-mass system. The upgraded DIRAC experiment observed 349±62 such atomic πK pairs, corresponding to a signal of 5.6 standard deviations. This is the first statistically significant observation of the strange dimesonic πK atom.

Abstract: A research has been made to look for a signature of the positive-strangeness baryon resonance Θ + ( 1530 ) , which is expected to decay into p K 0 . A peak is observed in the p π + π − invariant mass distribution in antiproton– 4 He annihilation reactions at rest with production of two π + π − pairs with invariant mass close to the K S 0 mass. The annihilation reactions on 4 He can involve two to four nucleons producing an energy blob characterized by high strangeness content. The peak is centred around 1560.0 ± 3.7 MeV and its width is very narrow. The statistical significance is 2.7; this value is considered of not sufficient significance to claim support of the Θ + . The data were collected with the Obelix spectrometer at the LEAR machine of CERN.

Abstract: The p annihilation at rest in a NTP 4He-gas target has been studied by means of the Obelix spectrometer installed at the LEAR accelerator of CERN. Reactions with production of 2π−2π+, 2π−3π+, 2π−2π+p, 2π−π+2p, 2π−3p (with pπ>80 MeV/c and pp>300 MeV/c) have been selected and single- and multinucleon annihilations identified. For the first time some known mesonic and baryonic resonances have been observed in p 4He annihilations and branching ratios are evaluated for a number of reaction channels.

Abstract: Up to now it has been observed that a fraction of about 3% of the p 's stopped in a dense He target survives for a surprisingly long time (tens of microseconds). As suggested by Condo in 1964 the long lifetime of p 's in He is explained by the existence of metastable states of the exotic atom p He + . An analysis of data from p 's stopped in He targets at 3 bar pressure by the Obelix apparatus at the LEAR decelerator at CERN is presented. We do not observe any significative amount of “prompt” annihilations (few nanoseconds) after the p 's capture.

Abstract: The annihilation frequencies of 19 p p annihilation reactions at rest obtained in different target densities are analysed in order to determine the values of the P -wave annihilation percentage at each target density and the average hadronic branching ratios from P - and S -states. Both the assumptions of linear dependence of the annihilation frequencies on the P -wave annihilation percentage of the protonium state and the approach with the enhancement factors of Batty are considered. Furthermore the cases of incompatible measurements are discussed.

10. Production rates for π+ K −, pK −, and pπ− atoms in inclusive processes

Abstract: The yields of π+K−, pK−, and pπ− atoms in the reaction p + Al → atom + X at energies of 24, 70, 450 GeV and emission angles of θlab=1°–6° are calculated from inclusive-production cross sections for p, π+, π−, and K−. Estimates of these hadronic-atom yields for a Ta target are also given. The inclusive-production cross sections for p, π+, π−, and K− are obtained within the Lund model of string fragmentation. The accuracy of the calculations is estimated by comparing single particle yields calculated by the Lund model and experimental yields of particles in proton-nucleus interactions.

Abstract: The annihilation fractions and cross sections for the n p annihilation reaction in flight (∼50–400 MeV/c) into ηπ+ and η′π+ final states have been measured. The first ones follow the trend expected for P wave annihilations. From the ratios of the yields an evaluation of the pseudoscalar mixing angle in the standard form is possible. The value found shows that for pseudoscalar meson production from P wave the Quark Line Rule is not grossly violated.

Abstract: The p D and p 4 He total annihilation cross sections have been measured with the Obelix apparatus at LEAR at, respectively, three and two values of the p incident momentum between 70 MeV/c and 36 MeV/c. The values of the p D annihilation cross section, at such low energies, are in agreement with a surprising result obtained in a recent low statistics measurement of the antiprotonic deuterium K α X-rays [M. Augsburger et al., Phys. Lett. B 461 (1999) 417] (see following article), concerning the unexpected narrow width of the antiprotonic deuterium 1s level.

Abstract: A confirming evidence for two pseudoscalar states with masses M 1 =1405±5, Γ 1 =50±4 MeV/ c 2 and M 2 =1500±10, Γ 2 =100±20 MeV/ c 2 is reported. The second pseudoscalar fills the nonet and leaves the first as an outsider supporting the hypothesis for its exotic nature.

Abstract: The results of a study of the annihilation reactions n p → θπ + and n p → ωπ + are reported; the data were collected by the OBELIX apparatus, with antineutrons annihilating in flight (momenta from ∼ 50 MeV/ c to 405 MeV/ c ). Annihilation frequencies and annihilation cross sections have been deduced, for both channels, as a function of antineutron momentum. From the cross section ratio, a substantial deviation from OZI rule expectations is observed. An s s quark content in the nucleon offers a fairly plausible explanation for such an effect.

Abstract: The reaction p p→K + K − π 0 was analysed for antiproton annihilations at rest at three hydrogen target densities. A strong dependence of the p p→φπ 0 yield on the quantum numbers of the initial state is observed. The branching ratio of the φπ0 channel from the 3S1 initial state is more than 15 times larger than the one from the 1P1 state. A large apparent violation of the OZI rule for tensor meson production from p p -annihilations from the P-waves (1+++2++) is observed: Rexp(f′2π0/f2π0)=(149±20)·10−3, significantly exceeding the OZI-rule prediction R=16·10−3.

Abstract: The hadronic annihilation branching-ratios in quasi-two-body final states have been obtained from the observation of the reactions pbarp→π+π−π0, K+K−π0,KπK0 at rest in hydrogen targets at different densities. The enhancement or suppression of specific hadronic channels connected to dynamical selection rules is observed in the production of different resonances both in protonium S and P–waves, systematically investigated for the first time. Besides the well known ρ(770)π and a2(1320)π enhancement from 3S1 and 1S0 partial waves, the dominance of one isospin source in K*(892)Kbar production, well established from S–waves, is confirmed also in P–waves (1S0, I = 0; 3S1, I = 1; 1P1, I = 0; 3P1, I = 0; 3P2, I = 1). In addition, the experimental data clearly show a strong suppression of φ(1020)π and a0(980)π final states from P–wave which has a remarkable coincidence with K*(892)Kbar pattern production.

Abstract: The results of the spin-parity analysis of annihilations at very low momentum (≈ 50 MeV/c) are reported. To describe the data the production of the ϱ, f2, a2 and a1 mesons and the presence of the ππ interaction in S-wave (the σ term) in the final state are necessary. The best fit solution requires also the presence of a ϱ′ state of mass and width M = 1.282 ± 0.037, Γ = 0.236 ± 0.036 GeV/c2 and of a heavy pion π(1300) of mass and width M = 1.275 ± 0.015, Γ = 0.218 ± 0.100 GeV/c2. The measured fraction of the annihilation cross section into 2π+2π− is (7.61 ± 0.35) · 10−2.

Abstract: We measured the in flight annihilation frequencies and cross sections of reactions n p → π + π 0 ,π + η and K+KS in the antineutron momentum range between 50 and 400 MeV/c. The annihilation frequencies of these channels from the different allowed initial states were calculated and some information about the n p annihilation dynamics were obtained. The first determination of the D-wave contribution in this momentum range was also obtained.

Abstract: The partial wave analysis of the reaction p p → π + π − π 0 at rest has been performed for the first time by using high-statistics data sets collected in hydrogen targets at three different densities. The different mixtures of partial waves corresponding to our samples allow a reliable determination of each contribution. This technique is crucial in the identification of the exotic candidate f2(1565) which can be produced by 1S0, 3P1 and 3P2 initial states. The amplitude analysis was performed in the frame of the K-Matrix and P-Vector approach. It requires presence of the exotic candidates f0(1500) and f2(1565) with the following masses and total widths: (1449 ± 20)MeV, (114 ± 30)MeV and (1507 ± 15)MeV, (130 ± 20)MeV respectively. In addition to f0(980), f0(1300) f2(1270) and ϱ(770), a clear evidence of I = 1, JP = 1− signal, which we identify with ϱ(1450), is obtained.

Abstract: The study of the K±Kmiss0π∓π+π− channel (7016 events), from p p annihilations in a gaseous hydrogen target at NTP, with the OBELIX spectrometer at LEAR (CERN), is presented. A spin-parity analysis provides evidence for two axial vectors, one in the low K K π mass region, the well established f1(1285), decaying to a0(980)π, the second, the 1++ component of the old puzzling E l , the f1(1420), decaying mainly to K ∗ K , seen for the first time in p p annihilation at rest. The analysis confirms the dominant production of the pseudoscalar η(1405), decaying mainly to (Kπ) S K , and the existence of a second pseudoscalar in the same mass region, the η(1460), decaying mainly to K ∗ K .

Abstract: The measurement of different reactions of p d annihilation at rest in a gaseous target has been performed using the OBELIX spectrometer at LEAR (CERN). A strong deviation from the OZI-rule prediction was found from the measurement of the ratio R = φπ ωπ in two regions of proton momenta, P c and P > 400 MeV/ c : R( φπ − ωπ − ) = (133 ± 26) × 10 −3 and (113 ± 30) × 10 −3 , respectively. These values are about 30 times greater than the theoretical prediction. For the first time the excitation of the †-resonance was observed among the final-state products of p d annihilation. The existence of a broad enhancement in the 4π invariant mass at m ≈ 1480 MeV, seen in previous experiments, was confirmed. A ≈ 100 MeV downward shift of the bump position, when the proton momentum increased up to P > 400 MeV/ c , was also observed, while the positions of ω, ϱ and f 2 (1270) did not change with the proton momentum. The following branching ratios were measured: BR( p d → π − φ p ) = (6.62 ± 0.49) × 10 −4 , for P c ; BR( p d → π − φ p ) = (0.95 ± 0.22) × 10 −4 , for P > 400 MeV/ c ; BR( p d → π − ω p ) = (49.7 ± 8.9) × 10 −4 , for P c ; BR( p d → π − ω p ) = (8.38 ± 1.09) × 10 −4 , for P > 400 MeV/ c ; BR( p d → 2π − π + p ) = (150 ± 6) × 10 −4 , for P c ; BR( p d → 2π − π + p ) = (16.6 ± 0.9) × 10 −4 , for P > 400 MeV/ c ; BR( p d → 3π − 2π + p ) = (326 ± 12) × 10 −4 , for P c ; BR( p d → 3π − 2π + p ) = (44 ± 7) × 10 −4 , for P > 400 MeV/ c ; BR( p d → Λ K + π − ) = (0.96 ± 0.19) × 10 −4 , for P > 400 MeV/ c ; BR( p d → Λ K + π − π 0 ) = (3.5 ± 0.8) × 10 −4 , for P > 400 MeV/ c ; BR( p p → 2π − 2π + ) = (540 ± 20) × 10 −4 ; BR( p p → 3π − 3π + ) = (251 ± 21) × 10 −4 .

Abstract: The ratio of the number of ultrarelativistic positronium atoms ( A 2e ) to the photon number in the momentum interval 800–2000 MeV/ c has been measured in pC interactions at E p =70 GeV and at an angle of 8.4° in the laboratory frame. The branching ratio ϱ π =(1.84±0.29)×10 -9 for π 0 decay into a photon and A 2e has been obtained. The parameter ϱ π is determined by the conversion probability ϱ A of a time-like photon into A 2e in radiative decays of elementary particles.

Abstract: Data on p¯ slowing down and capture in helium at 1 and 0.2 mb at room temperature are presented and compared to the corresponding previously publicated data in molecular hydrogen and deuterium. A Monte Carlo simulation containing a low-energy extrapolation of measured p¯electronic stopping power in helium gas,screened Rutherford collisions, and simple cascade mechanisms is able to reproduce the gross features of the data, but cannot explain some nontrivial details of the measured distributions.

Abstract: The spin-parity analysis of the data on the ¯pp → 2π+ 2π − annihilation reaction at rest in liquid and in gaseous hydrogen at 3 bar pressure and in flight at p momentum of 50 MeV/c, collected by the Obelix spectrometer at the LEAR complex of CERN, is presented. The relative branching ratios (a1(1260) → σπ)/(a1(1260) → ρπ) = 0.06 ± 0.05 and (π(1300) → σπ)/(π(1300) → ρπ) = 2.2 ± 0.4 are obtained. It is also shown that the inclusion of the exotic meson π1(1400), JPC= 1−+, mass and width M = 1.384 ± 0.028, Γ = 0.378 ± 0.058 GeV/c2, in its decay to ρπ, improves the fit and some implications of these results are briefly discussed. The relative S and P-wave annihilation percentages in four charged pions at two target densities are obtained

Abstract: The π+π−π0, K+K−π0 and K±K0π∓ final states produced by p p annihilation at rest at three different hydrogen target densities have been analyzed in the frame of a coupled channel analysis together with ππ and πK scattering data. Here we present the main results which concern masses, widths, ππ and K K partial widths of all the involved resonances (JP=0+,1−,2+), the direct determination of Γ K K /Γ ππ ratio for f0(1370) and f0(1500) ( Γ K K /Γ ππ =0.91±0.20 and Γ K K /Γ ππ =0.25±0.03 , respectively), the determination of a0(1300) parameters (M=1303±16 MeV; Γ=92±16 MeV) and the observation of two different high mass ρ signals associated to ρ(1450) and ρ(1700) (M=1182±30 MeV; Γ=389±20 MeV and M=1594±20 MeV; Γ=259±20 MeV, respectively).

Abstract: A spin-parity analysis of a sample of p p→K + K − π + π − π 0 annihilation events taken at rest in gaseous H2 at NTP is reported. The invariant mass spectrum of the K+K−π0 system shows the presence of the E/ι resonance pattern at 1.42 GeV. The analysis of this signal confirms the results obtained by the OBELIX Collaboration in previous works, namely: the existence of two pseudoscalar states at 1.413 ± 0.002 and 1.460±0.012 GeV with widths 0.051 ± 0.004 and 0.120±0.015 GeV, respectively. The p p system in the 3 P 1 wave shows also a signal corresponding to the axial vector f1(1420) decaying to K ∗ K with mass 1.420±0.003 GeV and width 0.061±0.005 GeV. A study of the incoherent phase space background shows that its origin is mostly due to the reflection of a resonant state in the K+K−π+π− system. The isobar decomposition of this resonant state is mainly f0(1370)(ππ)S, its parameters are: JPC=0++, m=1.670±0.02 GeV and width 0.267±0.036 GeV. This signal can be probably identified with another decay mode of the f0(1710).

Abstract: The annihilation frequency of the reaction p¯ p!p0p0 at rest in liquid hydrogen has been measured by the Obelix experiment by using different apparatus configurations and trigger conditions. The value obtained is f (p0p0, LH)5(2.860.1stat60.4syst)31024. With the same data samples, the p0h annihilation frequency has been determined to be f (p0h, LH)5(0.960.2stat60.1syst)31024. The results are discussed within the frame of the present experimental situation

Abstract: The results of a search for a possible evidence of a π + π + resonant state in the n p→π + π + π − annihilation reaction with data collected by the OBELIX Experiment are presented. The study has been performed by means of a partial wave analysis in the frame of the isobar model. Production fractions for a possible π + π + resonance have been evaluated. The observed effects at the π + π + threshold may be described reasonably well by the contributions of f 2 (1270), f 0 (1500), f 2 (1565) and ρ (1450) states and their interferences, but a meaningful statistical indication for a π + π + scalar state at about 1400 MeV emerges from the analysis.

Abstract: The antineutron-proton total doss section has been measured in the low momentum range 50-400 MeV/c (below 100 MeV/c for the first time). The measurement was performed at LEAR (CERN) by the OBELIX experiment, thanks to its unique antineutron beam facility. A thick target transmission technique has been used. The measured total cross section shows an anomalous behaviour below 100 MeV/c. A dominance of the isospin I = 0 channel over the I = 1 one at low energy is clearly deduced. Abstract: The Obelix experiment at CERN collected samples of antiproton annihilations at rest in different gaseous targets, such as hydrogen, deuterium and helium. We analyze a set of the Obelix data using a new technique for measuring, for the first time, the cascade times independent of the capture energy and of the antiproton stopping power. We report on measurements of the cascade times for hydrogen at 3.4, 5.8, 9.8 and 150 mbar and for helium at 8.2, 50 and 150 mbar pressure. An estimate of the antiproton capture energy in hydrogen is also presented.

Abstract: Pion pair production from the proton-tantalum nuclear interaction at proton energy 70 GeV has been studied. Pion correlations as a function of the relative momentum in a pair CMS have been measured at the relative momentum region below 40 MeV/ c . The experimental data agree with the calculation that takes into account the Coulomb factor in the differential cross section of pion pairs production.

Abstract: The p p total annihilation cross section has been measured at four values of the p incident momentum, between 70 MeV/c and 38 MeV/c, with the Obelix apparatus at LEAR. The new measurements are in agreement with the trend of previous measurements of the p p total annihilation cross section at low energy, performed by the Obelix experiment [A. Bertin et al., Phys. Lett. B 369 (1996) 77; A. Benedettini et al., Nucl. Phys. B (Proc. Suppl.) 56A (1997) 58], as well as with a fit of the latter data based on a low energy expansion of the scattering amplitude [J. Carbonell, K.V. Protasov, A. Zenoni, Phys. Lett. B 397 (1997) 345]. The departure of the annihilation cross section from a smooth behaviour, suggested by a previous measurement of the cross section around 44 MeV/c [A. Bertin et al., Phys. Lett. B 369 (1996) 77], is not confirmed by the new data.

Abstract: The study of the K^± K_miss^0 π^± π^+ π^- Channel (7016 events), from p ̅p annihilations in a gaseous hydrogen target at NTP, with the OBELIX spectrometer at LEAR (CERN), is presented. A spin-parity analysis provides evidence for two axial vectors, one in low KK ̅π mass region, the well established f_1(1285), decaying to a_0(980)π, the second, the 1^++ component of the old puzzling E/i, the f_1(1420), decaying mainly to K^*K ̅, seen for the first time in p ̅p annihilation at rest. The analysis confirms the dominant production of the pseudoscalar η(1405), decaying mainly to (Kπ)_sK ̅, and the existence of a second pseudoscalar in the same mass region, the η(1460), decaying mainly to K*K ̅.

Abstract: The pp total annihilation cross section has been measured, with the Obelix apparatus at LEAR, at ten values of the antiproton incident momentum between 43 and 175 MeV/c. The values of the cross section show that the well known 1 p behaviour of the annihilation cross section is drastically modified at very low momenta, which demonstrates the important role of the Coulomb force in low energy pp interaction. Moreover, they do not present any explicit resonant behaviour. Finally, when compared to potential model calculations, the data suggest that the percentage of P-wave in pp interaction around 50 MeV/c antiproton incident momentum is less than 5%.

Abstract: From the study of the annihilation at rest p p → K ± K miss 0 π ∓ π + π − the production rates of the η (1440) → K ± K L 0 π ∓ were obtained for three different hydrogen target densities: liquid, gaseous at NTP and at low pressure (5 mbar). The rate values are: f η (1440) (LH) = (6.0±0.5) · 10 −4 , f η (1440) (NTP) = (2.9±0.4) · 10 −4 and f η (1440) (5mbar) = (1.0±0.2) · 10 −4 . From these results, the density dependence of the annihilation fraction from the 1 S 0 protonium level can be extracted directly.

Abstract: The results of measuring the ratio R = Y(φπ + π − ) Y(ωπ + π − ) for antiproton annihilation at rest in a gaseous and a liquid hydrogen target are presented. It was found that the value of this ratio increases with the decrease of the dipion mass, which demonstrates the difference between the φ and ω production mechanisms. An indication of the momentum transfer dependence of the apparent OZI rule violation for the φ production from the 3S1 initial state was found.

Abstract: We report the stopping power of molecular hydrogen for antiprotons of kinetic energy above the maximum (approximately 100 keV) with the purpose of comparing with the proton one. Our result is consistent with a positive difference in antiproton-proton stopping powers above approximately 250 keV and with a maximum difference between the stopping powers of 21%+/-3% at around 600 keV.

Abstract: The spin-parity analysis of the data on the pbar p → 2π+ 2π− annihilation reaction at rest in liquid and in gaseous hydrogen at 3 bar pressure and in flight at p momentum of ~ 50 MeV/c, collected by the Obelix spectrometer at the LEAR complex of CERN, is presented. The relative branching ratios (a1(1260) → σπ)/(a1(1260) → ρπ) = 0.06 ± 0.05 and (π(1300) → σπ)/(π(1300) → ρπ) = 2.2 ± 0.4 are obtained. It is also shown that the inclusion of the exotic meson π1(1400), JPC= 1−+, mass and width M = 1.384 ± 0.028, Γ = 0.378 ± 0.058 GeV/c2, in its decay to ρπ, improves the fit and some implications of these results are briefly discussed. The relative S and P-wave annihilation percentages in four charged pions at two target densities are obtained.
