Despite the increasing incidence of the condition, people with dementia face a double stigma: ageism and the stigma of mental illness. The stigmatization of the condition has negative consequences, and can even lead to self-stigmatization. To develop adequate education programs to overcome the harmful stigma, the degree and the characteristics of that stigmatization have to be identified. In this study, the content and the language of obituaries of well-known people with dementia are analyzed using a qualitative bottom-up approach. If mentioned, the dementia receives little attention and the information given does not exceed common knowledge. This fifth annual edition of MycoNews starts with an editorial on the critical importance of International Mycological Congresses (IMCs) to the health of mycology. Items on Counting down to IMC12, the State of the World's Plants and Fungi 2023, and progress towards Improving nomenclatural stability in medically important fungi follow. Reports are provided of several mycological meetings in 2023: the Asian Mycological Congress, XIX Congress of European Mycologists, a meeting of European Mycological Groups and Societies, the XI Latin American Mycological Congress, Westerdijk Spring Symposium on Fungal Evolution, the Brazilian Society of Mycology, the Annual Meeting of the Mycological Society of China, and the Fifth Iranian Mycological Congress. Information is provided on how to make nominations for the various IMA Awards due to be presented at IMC12 in August, the new Future is Fungi Award launched in 2023, and the Adel-Azeem and Stamets Award for work on Psilocybe in Africa. The Westerdijk Fungal Biodiversity Institute Awards for 2023 were made to Andrey Yurkov and Cathie Aime and the citations to those awards are provided. We include tributes to the passing of two eminent mycologists, Lorelei Norvell and Takashi Matsushima, and also send birthday greetings to Bryce Kendrick who turned 90, and Maria Ławrynowicz, Yu Li, and Anthony Whalley who all became octogenarians. This article explores the obituary as an important, yet neglected, site of everyday security discourse. Through an original analysis of 86 published obituaries of 11 prominent 'terrorists', we offer three arguments. First, obituaries play an important constitutive role in shaping public understanding of terrorism and terrorists. Second, in so doing, terrorist obituaries frequently draw upon and reproduce established constructions of terrorism. Especially important here, we argue, are claims associated with the influential, yet heavily contested, 'new terrorism' thesis that posits profound transformations in the motives, organization and violences of terrorist groups from the late 20th century onwards. Third, notwithstanding the above, the (terrorist) obituary also offers important resources for nuancing and problematizing dominant constructions – such as of 'new terrorism' – in part because of the opportunity for sociopolitical critique afforded by this mnemonic genre. In making these arguments, the article therefore offers new empirical and conceptual insight into the obituary as a genre of everyday security knowledge, and into the mobility and resilience of established security discourses. The COVID-19 global pandemic drastically changed the lives of so many, including creating a sense of mass bereavement in the United States because of the million plus lives lost. As obituaries provide public documentation of personal legacies as well as serve to create a generational memory, this study sought to determine how obituaries, published in the United States during a public health crisis with excess deaths, discuss living and dying. We analysed 82 obituaries published in the United States during the COVID-19 pandemic to determine their functions during this time. These U.S. obituaries documented how the COVID-19 pandemic interrupted the life stories of so many. Several key themes emerged in the obituaries – cause of death, COVID-19 changing lives, resilience/positivity, political statements, and thanking healthcare workers. The internet and social media have radically transformed grief, mourning and memorialisation. This article addresses how online death announcements (ODAs) (where bereaved people use social media platforms to share news of a loved one's death) are extending beyond the role of public death notification previously limited to newspaper-published obituaries. We argue that ODAs are social performances embodying a diverse range of grief responses and offer a significant new direction in death scholarship. We draw on semi-structured interview data with nine people who announced the death of a loved one on Facebook, Instagram or Twitter. Using a dramaturgical framework to interrogate this data, we argue that ODAs go beyond purely information-sharing devices and are, instead, complex performances which benefit mourners in a number of ways and are governed by tacit 'rules' of permission and content. To make sense of this, we analyse in turn the role of, and collaboration between, the 'actors' who post ODAs, the 'performance' of the ODA itself, and the 'audience' of friends/followers who 'receive' the ODA. At the 1988 IAU General Assembly in Baltimore, among many who offered reminiscences of earlier meetings was Charlotte Moore Sitterly. She first attended the 1932 GA meeting, in Cambridge, Mass., though she already "helped to assemble material for delegates" since the 1920s, for astronomers at Princeton, Mount Wilson and Lick Observatory. She was an ardent member of the new Commission 14 (then called "Fundamental Spectroscopic Data"), eventually becoming its president. In her 1988 reminiscence, she recalled that the Commission meeting was sparsely attended and very informal, but astronomers' "never-ending demand for tables and data analysis" soon changed all that (Sitterly 1988). Here we provide a brief overview of how Charlotte Moore Sitterly came to be at the very center of that change, which Donald Menzel early on described as having "turned chaos into order" and just a "little short of miraculous" (Menzel 1928) We will recount highlights of her early life, aspirations, training, and contributions during her years at Princeton, Berkeley, Mount Wilson, and the National Bureau of Standards. Dr. Robert W. Lucky, IEEE Communications Society's fourth President, passed away at his home in Fair Haven, New Jersey on March 10, 2022. Bob does not need any introduction as most ComSoc members know Bob through his numerous keynote speeches and writings in his Reflections column in IEEE Spectrum. To pay tribute to our former President and communications pioneer, we have assembled a group of four former ComSoc Presidents from the New York metropolitan area who worked or interacted with Bob at different periods of his distinguished career. Argument: In this paper I follow the demise of the ether in the first half of the twentieth century to show how the first obituaries of the ether were instrumental in creating an object with specific and largely simplified properties related to, but different from, nineteenth-century ethers. I suggest that writing the history of dead objects (or objects an author wants to be dead) is not epistemologically neutral but, on the contrary, it involves a reformulation of the object itself. I show that this was indeed the case with the ether: those arguing for its demise in the early twentieth century tended to overlook as irrelevant one of the ether's most important properties, namely being the seat for the transmission of electromagnetic waves. Instead, they emphasized the contradictions between other properties of previous ether(s), so as to advocate for its disappearance. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The journal Structural Chemistry has published reports of original research and reviews of research areas in all field of structural chemistry, creating and disseminating new knowledge, uncovering variations and regularities in structural information, and fostering discussions among scientists. In addition, from time to time, it communicates papers concerned with the history of the science of structures, obituaries of structural chemists, and reviews of books related to structural chemistry. These contributions that could be covered by the term of "the human side" are surveyed in this paper using the occasion of celebrating the 30-year anniversary of launching this periodical. Basking in Reflected Glory or BIRGing is the tendency for sport fans to promote their connection to successful teams and players. This archival study examines deceased individuals' BIRGing behaviours in newspaper obituaries across 36 professional sports teams. It was hypothesised that obituaries would be more likely to mention sport fans' team allegiances following successful seasons compared to losing campaigns. Consistent with this hypothesis, there were a higher proportion of obituaries mentioning the deceased's support for professional sports teams following successful seasons (55%) compared to losing seasons (45%). This article explores the connections between humour, gender and the violent function and practice of military institutions. As such it departs from a more typical theorisation of humour in international politics as a practice of rupture or resistance. Whilst humour can contest prevailing power structures, institutions, systems of oppression and violence, this article reveals the opposite. To do so, references to humour in the Ministry of Defence's official obituaries for British fatalities from the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq are analysed and discussed. Firstly, conceptualisations of humour, gender and violence are considered and an approach to humour as gender practice is detailed and situated within a feminist approach to gender and military violence. Secondly, through the MOD obituaries the article then explores how humour can contribute to the violent function and practice of the military institution and the broader social and political legitimacy of the institution and its violence. This article triangulates radio, social relations, and remembrance to explore how the Faroese memorialize their dead and what these practices tell us about how "communities of meaning" are symbolically created in small-scale societies. The Faroese have a remarkable appreciation for local remembrance through obituaries, "death notices," well-attended funerals, and the writing of local histories (bygdarsøgur). The Faroese constantly (re)construct Faroese community on the radio. A Faroese community acts as a repository of symbols—signifiers of belonging which equate to knowledge of lineage. Villagers demarcate the boundaries of these communities symbolically. With radio "death notices" read out twice a day, the radio voice is not just memorializing but is also the token of a nurtured linguistic consciousness. The Faroese have a "felt" attachment for their language, and alongside memorializing practices, the spoken word is an important contributing factor to this "community of meaning." Pursuant to a Congressional act in 2008, the Department of Health and Human Services established the Interagency Breast Cancer and Environmental Research Coordinating Committee to address the burden of breast cancer in the United States. Subsequently, the Committee recommended researchers study the timing of exposure to breast cancer risk factors. Given the high breast cancer mortality rate on Staten Island, this paper presents a case-control study investigating breast cancer risk associated with puberty while living on Staten Island. The dataset combined New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene female death certificate information between 1985 and 2006, with life history information from newspaper obituaries. Data analyzed included: age, length of residence on Staten Island, birth on Staten Island, and residence on Staten Island during puberty. Cases were individuals who died of breast cancer and controls were individuals who died of non-malignant causes. Analysis included multivariate logistic regression on the full dataset and multiple replicates of randomized one case to two controls simulations. Results indicated that living on Staten Island during puberty (ages 9–19) was associated with an elevated risk of dying from breast cancer (odds ratio 1.35, p < 0.001, 95% CI = 1.18, 1.55). In literature, obituaries from different cultures and languages have been studied on different levels and from different perspectives. One of the popular research topics is the use of metaphors, since metaphors help to cope with death, which in modern society is still a taboo. This article presents a bottom-up, primarily qualitative analysis of the metaphors in 150 obituaries of sportspeople, published in online versions of newspapers/magazines and on the Internet. As expected, the obituaries contain the traditional metaphors of death. Also more original, creative metaphors are introduced to describe death in a euphemistic way. Michael George Rossmann, who made monumental contributions to science, passed away peacefully in West Lafayette, Indiana on 14 May 2019 at the age of 88, following a courageous five‐year battle with cancer. Michael was born in Frankfurt, Germany on 30 July 1930. As a young boy, he emigrated to England with his mother just as World War II ignited. Michael was a highly innovative and energetic person, well known for his intensity, persistence and focus in pursuing his research goals. Michael was a towering figure in crystallography as a highly distinguished faculty member at Purdue University for 55 years. Michael made many seminal contributions to crystallography in a career that spanned the entirety of structural biology, beginning in the 1950s at Cambridge where the first protein structures were determined in the laboratories of Max Perutz (hemoglobin, 1960) and John Kendrew (myoglobin, 1958). Michael's work was central in establishing and defining the field of structural biology, which amazingly has described the structures of a vast array of complex biological molecules and assemblies in atomic detail. Knowledge of three‐dimensional biological structure has important biomedical significance including understanding the basis of health and disease at the molecular level, and facilitating the discovery of many drugs. Yusuf al-Ani's commitment to have artistic expression play a leading role in the effort to raise popular consciousness through artists' accurate portrayals of the social and political condition of Iraq and the wider Arab world are examined in the context of his remembrances of contributors he witnessed over the length of his career. Al-Ani's career-long effort to promote Iraqi theatre, cinema and the arts through collaboration and the acknowledgement of stylistic and intellectual influencers is explored through the prism of his 1999 volume Shakhsiyyāt wa dhikrayāt ('Personalities and memories'). In this collection al-Ani investigated a wide array of voices through a memorialization of Iraqi and other Arab intellectuals, artists and educators. A close examination of his vignettes of these varied influences establishes a sensibility in which to better appreciate the contributions and interventions made in the past for their impact(s) on artistic expression in the present. The depth of his analysis and the layered portraits that he provides of his subjects drive home the vast assemblage of al-Ani's friendships, engagements and correspondences with Iraqi and Arab intellectual milieus. Through personalized portraits and laser-like identifications of individual contributions al-Ani provides a focus on the opportunity that Iraqis were afforded to embrace and develop their talents in the arts. Despite his indefatigable efforts and consistent humour the volume supports a critical conclusion of the role of the state and political power in its stifling of artistic expression and social advance through the arts. Death and the advent of a variety of anniversaries are occasions when a discipline reflects on the accomplishments of its members, propounded by host universities, scholarly associations, focused conferences, journals, as well as the more normal course of the unfolding of a scholar's influence. The paper attempts to assemble Robert K Merton's posthumous publications together with the array of works directly relating to his body of sociological work. While it might be expected that particular themes would continue and this indeed occurs, there is also a wide range of attention to a large variety of Merton's work, including the launching of his emergent interest in sociological semantics. Lambertz discusses the post-war failure to trace nearly all missing Jews who had been trapped in Europe during the war, which underlines the extent of Nazi violence. Missing person enquiries provide evidence for how Jewish survivors, refugees and immigrants across the globe understood what had happened during the Nazi era. The correspondence arriving in post-war Jewish community offices across Germany in the late 1940s reveals highly fragmentary knowledge of wartime events, both on the part of far-flung former community members and the officials who attempted to assist them. The paper examines obituaries appearing in the Hungarian daily Népszabadság during the second half of the twentieth century. It argues from a social constructivist stance that the reading of these texts gives us insights about the prevailing norms and values related to death. It posits that the issue of death brings to the surface general cultural values as well. Its aim is to see how these norms and values have changed as the political and social structure changed in Hungary. First, the paper looks at general statistical data regarding obituaries which show a decline in their numbers. Using a topic framework, the elements and the structure of the texts are identified. In a detailed analysis of these elements, the paper examines the questions of authorship, informing, traits, identity, the announcement of death, achievements and the funeral, respectively. The findings put existing theories on the 'death taboo' in an empirical context in a number of ways. Instead of signifying a death taboo, metaphorical expressions of death show a secular, demystified but not tabooed relationship towards death in Hungary in the second half of the twentieth century. Este artigo apresenta os resultados da análise de 2.284 obituários publicados na Folha de S. Paulo, entre os anos de 2007 a 2012, com o objetivo de reconhecer as características de estilo, tema e composição do gênero, considerando o enquadramento deste enunciado nas categorias jornalísticas defendidas por Costa (2010) e Marques de Mello (2010), sob as perspectivas discursiv as de Bakhtin (2011) e de Maingueneau (2013). Para tanto, demonstra os resultados obtidos em dois procedimentos metodológicos que visam a elencar, quantitativa e qualitativamente, a estabilização dos elementos da composição, da temática e do estilo deste gênero discursivo e a sua relação com o jornalismo literário. Na investigação, aponta-se que o obituário brasileiro apresenta elementos que permitem comprovar a hipótese de que este enunciado enquadra-se como um gênero jornalístico informativo e utilitário, utilizando-se do diversional como recurso estilístico para amenizar o peso da morte, buscando uma forma de celebração da vida. The American Psychologist did not regularly publish the obituaries of prominent psychologists until 1979. The objective of the obituary section was not to canonize the deceased, but rather to respond to the field’s budding interest in the history of psychology. This article argues that the obituary, when viewed as a historical document, offers great pedagogical value in the psychology classroom. With distinct advantages over traditional instructional approaches, the obituaries of preeminent psychologists (1) include anecdotes that are often not covered in typical psychology textbooks, (2) present biographical information that has the potential to increase personal relevance to students and capitalize on the self-reference effect, and (3) reflect the zeitgeist of the field. This article aims to accomplish an analysis about recreation activities that are in the obituaries of the Ukrainian immigrant journal Pracia. For this finality, there were collected 251 obituaries, published between the years of 2001 and 2014, on basis of the methodological principles of Documental Research and Content Analysis (CA). This period of timeframe is justified by the availability of the material, which is filed in Graphic Prudentópolis, where this previously mentioned journal is made. It is important to note that this research consider the recreation concept related to “free time", proposed by Elias and Dunning (1992). Based from data analysis, it is possible to affirm that recreation practices carried out in that specific community are influenced by religious principles, not only guide the free time activities such as other cultural practices.
