5. Domitian: An Innovative Emperor?

Abstract

The exhibition at the National Museum of Antiquities at Leiden God on Earth: Emperor Domitian (December 2021–May 2022) presented an overview of Domitian’s life in objects to demonstrate the significance and impact of his 15-year reign. The show focused on how he legitimized and shaped his rule, and it challenged the viewer to rethink the assessment of Domitian in ancient sources and his branding as one of the “bad” emperors. The Flavian dynasty, by forging a connection to Augustus, the most popular ruler before them, “anchored innovation” by linking new ideas to familiar ideas already established. The great achievement of the exhibition lay in the quality and scope of the 275 objects from more than 20 museums; the Flavian era emerged as equally artistically rich as that of the Julio-Claudians. Although the exhibition explicitly did not aim to recast Domitian as a “good” ruler but rather invited the viewer to consider all aspects of his image and reputation, at the same time it seemed to rehabilitate Domitian, presenting him as an important emperor in his own right and in a more positive light.

Abstract

How is public engagement perceived to contribute to open science? This commentary highlights common reflections on this question from interviews with 12 public engagement fellows in Utrecht University’s Open Science Programme in the Netherlands. We identify four reasons why public engagement is an essential enabler of open science. Interaction between academics and society can: (1) better align science with the needs of society; (2) secure a relationship of trust between science and society; (3) increase the quality and impact of science; and (4) support the impact of open access and FAIR data practices (data which meet principles of findability, accessibility, interoperability and reusability). To be successful and sustainable, such public engagement requires support in skills training and a form of institutionalisation in a university-wide system, but, most of all, the fellows express the importance of a formal and informal recognition and rewards system. Our findings suggest that in order to make public engagement an integral part of open science, universities should invest in institutional support, create awareness, and stimulate dialogue among staff members on how to ‘do’ good public engagement.

Abstract

The genetic history of prehistoric and protohistoric Korean populations is not well understood because only a small number of ancient genomes are available. Here, we report the first paleogenomic data from the Korean Three Kingdoms period, a crucial point in the cultural and historic formation of Korea. These data comprise eight shotgun-sequenced genomes from ancient Korea (0.7×-6.1× coverage). They were derived from two archeological sites in Gimhae: the Yuha-ri shell mound and the Daesung-dong tumuli, the latter being the most important funerary complex of the Gaya confederacy. All individuals are from between the 4th and 5th century CE and are best modeled as an admixture between a northern China Bronze Age genetic source and a source of Jomon-related ancestry that shares similarities with the present-day genomes from Japan. The observed substructure and proportion of Jomon-related ancestry suggest the presence of two genetic groups within the population and diversity among the Gaya population. We could not correlate the genomic differences between these two groups with either social status or sex. All the ancient individuals' genomic profiles, including phenotypically relevant SNPs associated with hair and eye color, facial morphology, and myopia, imply strong genetic and phenotypic continuity with modern Koreans for the last 1,700 years.

Abstract

A location referred to as “Parthenon” appears in the fifth- and fourth-century BCE inventories of Athena's riches as one of the treasuries on the Acropolis of Athens, along with the Hekatompedon, the Proneos, the Opisthodomos, and the Archaios Neos. It is usually identified with the west room of the building today known as the Parthenon. Here, I offer a thorough review of the epigraphical, archaeological, and literary evidence and propose that the treasury called the Parthenon should be recognized as the west part of the building now conventionally known as the Erechtheion.1

Abstract

In the two parts of this chapter, we investigate the ways in which major royal cities of the Ptolemaic and Seleucid realms were constructed as capitals of imperial states. In particular, we discuss how the foundation stories of these cities reflect conflicts and integration politics, which the creation of imperial metropoleis involved and which these stories aimed to control. Against the common assumption that the capitals of the Ptolemaic and Seleucid empires were culturally and politically uncontested, we will suggest that both Ptolemaic and Seleucid royal cities were constantly positioned and re-positioned vis-à-vis other royal or imperial cities that expressed, or had expressed in the past, similar claims. In the foundation myths of royal cities, we observe both competition and accommodation: competition and acommodation, that is, across the imperial zones of the Seleucid and Ptolemaic kings, between Memphis and Alexandria, as well as between Alexandria and Rome.

Abstract

At the DH Benelux conference of 2017 I presented a poster titled “A Sea of Stone: Digitally Analyzing Jewish Funerary Inscriptions”. The poster described a new digital initiative: an international portal of Jewish funerary culture, part of which would be epigraphic and explore epitaphs from the sixth century BCE to the present day. The portal has recently been launched (https://peace.sites.uu.nl/). It consists of four sections, of which the epigraphic one, containing over 40,000 inscriptions, is fully functional. This paper describes the PEACE portal focusing on its epigraphic section: content, aims, challenges and future goals.

Abstract

In the Hellenistic period, cities were the cornerstones of imperial rule. Cities were the loci for the acquisition of capital and manpower, and imperial agents (philoi) were recruited for a large part among Greek civic elites. This chapter departs from the dual premise that premodern empires are negotiated enterprises and that they are often networks of interaction rather than territorial states. The relentless competition between three rival superpowers in the Hellenistic Aegean – the Seleukid, Ptolemaic and Antigonid Empires – gave cities a good bargaining position vis-à-vis these empires. The fact that the imperial courts were dominated by philoi from the Aegean poleis moreover meant that these cities held a central and privileged place in Hellenistic imperialism, and benefited greatly from it. Royal benefactions structured imperial-local interactions. They were instrumental in a complex of reciprocal gift-exchange between empires and cities. Empires most of all needed capital, loyalty and military support. As kings were usually short of funds, the gifts by which they hoped to win the support of cities against their rivals often came in the form of immaterial benefactions like the granting of privileges and the protection of civic autonomy.

Abstract

Between 2012 and 2015, a team of Ghent and Utrecht Universities conducted an intensive survey of the southern slopes of the Velatouri Hill, covering the area of the lower settlement of Thorikos (‘Industrial Quarter’) as well as parts of the acropolis. This project was completed in 2015, after which the inventorying and study of the 56,906 finds continued through 2016-2017. Currently a team from the Universities of Liège and Louvain-La-Neuve is conducting a complementary survey of the north-slope of the Velatouri. Awaiting the comprehensive publication of the entire Thorikos Survey Project, we think it appropriate to present some preliminary results with regard to the post-classical period, which has historically received only very limited attention. This analysis is based on the inventory and study of all finds collected during the 2012-2015 survey. In this preliminary report, we will 1) outline the scientific aims of the Thorikos Survey Project and its methodology, and 2) focus on the Hellenistic, Roman, Late Antique, Byzantine and (Early) Modern occupation on the slopes of the Velatouri.

Abstract

Jewish funerary culture, despite vast amounts of available data, has yet to benefit from comprehensive analyses. While a great amount of data is digitized and available online, it is nonetheless dispersed on various websites, whose databases are unrelated and incompatible with one another. Other data exists only in printed form, and is even less available. My paper will present a new project that intends to modify this state of affairs: PEACE, standing for Portal of Epigraphy, Archaeology, Conservation and Education on Jewish Funerary Culture.
