Controlling the motion of nano and microscale objects in a fluid environment is a key factor in designing optimized tiny machines that perform mechanical tasks such as transport of drugs or genetic material in cells, fluid mixing to accelerate chemical reactions, and cargo transport in microfluidic chips. Directed motion is made possible by the coupled translational and rotational motion of asymmetric particles. A current challenge in achieving directed and controlled motion at the nanoscale lies in overcoming random Brownian motion due to thermal fluctuations in the fluid. We use a hybrid lattice-Boltzmann Molecular Dynamics method with full hydrodynamic interactions and thermal fluctuations to demonstrate that controlled propulsion of individual nanohelices in an aqueous environment is possible. We optimize the propulsion velocity and the efficiency of externally driven nanohelices. We quantify the importance of the thermal effects on the directed motion by calculating the P\'eclet number for various shapes, number of turns and pitch lengths of the helices. Consistent with the experimental microscale separation of chiral objects, our results indicate that in the presence of thermal fluctuations at P\'eclet numbers $>10$, chiral particles follow the direction of propagation according to its handedness and the direction of the applied torque making separation of chiral particles possible at the nanoscale. Our results provide criteria for the design and control of helical machines at the nanoscale.

We examine pressure-driven non-equilibrium transport of linear, circular and star polymers through a nanochannel containing a rectangular pit with full hydrodynamic interactions and thermal fluctuations. We demonstrate that with sufficiently small pressure differences, there is contour length-dependent entropic trapping of the polymer in the pit when the pit and the polymer sizes are compatible. This is due to competition between flow and chain relaxation in the pit, which leads to a non-monotonic dependence of the polymer mobility on its size and should aid in the design of nanofiltration devices based on the polymer size and shape.

We derive new analytical results for the hydrodynamic force exerted on a sinusoidally oscillating porous shell and a sphere of uniform density in the Stokes limit. The coupling between the spherical particle and the solvent is done using the Debye-Bueche-Brinkman (DBB) model, i.e. by a frictional force proportional to the local velocity difference between the permeable particle and the solvent. We compare our analytical results and existing dynamic theories to Lattice-Boltzmann simulations of full Navier-Stokes equations for the oscillating porous particle. We find our analytical results to agree with simulations over a broad range of porosities and frequencies.

We consider the statics and dynamics of a flexible polymer confined between parallel plates both in the presence and absence of hydrodynamic interactions. The hydrodynamic interactions are described at the level of the fluctuating, compressible Navier-Stokes equation. We consider two cases: (i) confinement for both the solvent and the polymer, and (ii) confinement for the polymer only (in a 3D solvent), which is experimentally feasible, for instance, by (optical) trapping. We find a continuous transition from 2D to 3D dynamic scaling as a function of decreasing degree of confinement within the de Gennes and the weak-confinement regimes. We demonstrate that, in the presence of hydrodynamics, the polymer's center-of-mass diffusion coefficient in the direction parallel to the walls scales differently as a function of the level of confinement in cases (i) and (ii). We also find that in the commonly used Langevin dynamics description, the polymer swells more parallel to the walls than in the presence of hydrodynamics, and the planar diffusion coefficient shows scaling behavior similar to case (ii) rather than case (i). In addition, we quantify the differences in the static structure factor of the polymer between cases (i) and (ii), and between case (i) and Langevin dynamics., Comment: 11 pages, 10 figures

We determine the scaling exponents of polymer translocation (PT) through a nanopore by extensive computer simulations of various microscopic models for chain lengths extending up to N=800 in some cases. We focus on the scaling of the average PT time $\tau \sim N^{\alpha}$ and the mean-square change of the PT coordinate $ \sim t^\beta$. We find $\alpha=1+2\nu$ and $\beta=2/\alpha$ for unbiased PT in 2D and 3D. The relation $\alpha \beta=2$ holds for driven PT in 2D, with crossover from $\alpha \approx 2\nu$ for short chains to $\alpha \approx 1+\nu$ for long chains. This crossover is, however, absent in 3D where $\alpha = 1.42 \pm 0.01$ and $\alpha \beta \approx 2.2$ for $N \approx 40-800$., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures, minor changes in the text, To be published in: Phys.
