AbstractThe pregnant women and infants have always been the vulnerable groups in society, and their welfare is the main focus of the construction of ‘Healthy Silk Road’. In this paper, we attempt to study the impact of the BRI on maternal and infant health via DID method. The results remain robust in significance and magnitudes, indicating that the annual maternal and infant mortality rates have decreased by 12.38% and 7.62% due to the BRI relative to the untreated means, contributing 81.48% and 51.01% to the actual decline, respectively. The mechanism analysis shows that the economic development of countries under the BRI has been partially translated into health expenditure. Meanwhile, the construction of sanitation facilities in countries along the route has been significantly strengthened. Moreover, the local environment has been improved to reduce the exposure to pollutants and toxic substances. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
