Abstract

This article aimed at discussing the clinical significance of cognitive behavior language therapy in treating aphasia among stroke patients. The present discussion was based on empirical evidence found in the literature. The result of this review shows that cognitive-behavior language therapy has a clinical impact in treating aphasia among stroke patients. The reviewed study reported a significant reduction in aphasia and speech-language unhelpful thought and beliefs. Also, the need for more randomized trials to further express the clinical impact of cognitive behavior language therapy for aphasia following stroke was emphasized. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

6. Strategies for Achieving Best Practices Among Counselors in Anambra State Secondary School

Abstract

The paper examined the strategies that could be employed to achieve best practices among practicing counselors in Anambra State Secondary Schools. The study adopted a descriptive survey design and was guided by two research questions. The only hypothesis of the study was tested at 0.05 level of significance. An instrument known as “Achieving Best Practices Questionnaire (ABPQ) was employed to collect data. The data gathered were statistically analysed using mean, standard deviation and t –test. The result of the analysis revealed that best practices will be achieved when counselors perform their expected roles, abide by the ethics of the profession andattend to the needs and aspirations of her public. Based on the findings of the study, it was suggested that the government should enact a law making the practice of counseling compulsory in all schools and counselors should execute their duties in line with the ethics of the profession to achieve the goal of counseling.LWATI: A Journal of Contemporary Research, 9(3), 41-48, 2012

Abstract

The study examined the extent to which Maslow’s Need Theory could be applied in motivating teachers in Anambra State Primary Schools. It adopted a survey design and was guided by five research questions. A structured questionnaire designed by the researcher was employed to collect data. The data collected were subjected to statistical analysis using mean, and standard deviation. 8. Assessment of Physical Activity (PA) Readiness and Participation among Staff in Nigerian Universities

Abstract

Inactivity and sedentary living are on the increase globally. Readiness to begin, continue and sustain PA (physical activity) behaviour plays key roles in attaining desirable health outcome. Evidence-based data regarding readiness to begin and /or maintain physical activity among staff in workplaces including the University environment have become indispensable for initiating PA behaviour promotion policies and programmes. This study adopted the descriptive survey research design to assess the prevalence of PA readiness and participation behaviors among university staff in south-eastern Nigeria. Six hundred staff, (age ranged from 25-65 years old, male and female, teaching and non-teaching) from two Federal Universities participated in the study. Self-reported data were obtained with PA stages of change assessment instrument. Results indicate 60% of all respondents representing (pre-contemplation, contemplation and preparation) were not participating in PA or doing so infrequently, while 40% were actively participating. T-test yielded no significant differences for both gender, [Males (M=3.09; SD=1.39), Females (M=2.95, SD=1.37) t=1.20, p= .23] and staff categories, [Teaching staff (M=3.13; SD=1.33), Non-teaching staff (M = 3.03; SD = 1.43) t=1.78, p= .07]. In conclusion, majority of university staff were at the pre-adoption or pre-action stages irrespective of gender and staff categories. 10. Examination Malpractice and Control in Public Secondary Schools in Anambra State, Nigeria: Implications for the Counsellor

Abstract

This study set out to investigate examination malpractice and control among secondary school students in Anambra state, Nigeria. One thousand, five hundred (1,500) respondents were drawn from the population of staff and students using a multi-stage sampling procedure. Three research questions and one hypothesis guided the study. A 36 item structured questionnaire was used to collect data for the study. Data were analysed using mean and ‘t’ test statistics. The result shows that both teachers and students have knowledge of what examination malpractice is all about and possible ways of curbing it. Counsellors should internalize the results of this study and use them meaningfully for counselling on issues related to examination malpractice Key words: Examination, Malpractice, Control, Secondary School

Abstract

This paper examined team approach education counselling in secondary schools as an enzyme for national peace building. It pointed out that adolescents can do a lot when properly guided. Adolescents can help in promoting peace spirit and culture among themselves in the school and communities. National peace can be achieved by inoculating the adolescents against violence, teaching them skills to manage conflicts nonviolently, and by seeking and creating a desire to seek peaceful resolutions of conflicts. The need for Behavioural Inoculation, Behavioural First Aid and Behavioural Treatment in order to promote peaceful co-existence in the society was emphasized. Also, the enzymic nature and role of team approach peace education counselling for adolescents in secondary schools in Nigeria was discussed and challenges facing the programme were highlighted. Based on the challenges, suitable recommendations were made among which are: team approach, involving the home, peer group, mass media, churches/mosques, schools and significant others should be employed in peace education counseling tofacilitate National Peace Building.Tthe counsellor as the technical head of the team should serve as the strategist, consultant, trainer and coordinator. In addition, the government at all levels should train and redeploy qualified counsellors and peer facilitators to secondary schools to be conducting workshops on diversity and enhancing peace skills.
