Science is humanity's best insurance against threats from nature, but it is a fragile enterprise that must be nourished and protected. The preponderance of scientific evidence indicates a natural origin for SARS-CoV-2. Yet, the theory that SARS-CoV-2 was engineered in and escaped from a lab dominates media attention, even in the absence of strong evidence. We discuss how the resulting anti-science movement puts the research community, scientific research, and pandemic preparedness at risk.

Simple Summary: This study explores the phylogenetic relationships among Korean native black goats, whose genetic resources are being preserved by the National Institute of Animal Science through the collection of purebred specimens. We analyzed the complete mitochondrial genomes of 282 native goats and 82 reference populations. The native population exhibits a haplotype diversity of 0.659 and includes 39 distinct haplotypes. Neighbor-joining tree and median-joining network analyses established that these goats form a unique clade (A') within Haplogroup A, suggesting a shared ancestry with diverse goat populations from around the world. This study explores the phylogeny of Korean native black goats through analysis of their complete mitochondrial DNA. The National Institute of Animal Science has gathered genetic material on purebred goats from isolated regions such as Tongyeong, Dangjin, and Jangsu, and is actively breeding them on a national level. These populations, however, are small and exhibit high inbreeding rates, highlighting the urgent need to preserve genetic diversity. The haplotype diversity within this native group is 0.659, with 39 haplotypes identified. By contrast, including international breeds in the analysis increases the overall haplotype diversity to 0.925 with 203 haplotypes identified, highlighting the limited genetic diversity among native black goats. For phylogenetic assessment, a neighbor-joining tree and median-joining network were constructed using identified haplogroups (A, B, C, D, G, and F) from prior studies. The results pinpoint the native black goats as closely related to, but distinct from, Haplogroup A with a bootstrap value of 98, establishing them as a separate clade (A'). This supports the notion of a shared ancestry with various global populations. This research provides essential data on the origins and evolutionary history of Korean native black goats, supporting conservation and breeding efforts aimed at enhancing genetic diversity. Stone circles of the Wielbark culture, such as those found in Grzybnica, have long fascinated researchers, who debate their function and significance. The aim of the presented study is to determine the origins and subsistence strategies of the population buried near the stone circles in Grzybnica, which may help highlight the role of these sites within Wielbark communities. For analysis, human remains from the cemetery in Grzybnica, West Pomeranian Voivodeship, Poland, were utilized. Radiocarbon dating of five samples, stable isotope analysis of carbon and nitrogen in two samples, and strontium isotope analysis in 20 cremated human remains and 12 plant samples were conducted. Radiocarbon dating confirmed the earlier dating of the site to the period between approximately 80 and 260 CE. Dietary studies indicated that the individuals buried here regularly consumed millet (mean δ13C = –17.8) and animal protein (mean δ15N = 9.5). This diet corresponds with the variability described for the Wielbark culture site in Rogowo. The strontium isotope analysis revealed significant variation between the river valley (0.7157–0.7264) and the adjacent upland (0.7109–0.7138). The isotopic values in humans were homogeneous, ranging from 0.7113 to 0.7130, indicating no outliers that might suggest the presence of migrants. The variability observed in humans corresponds with the values observed on the upland. The results suggest that the group of individuals buried in Grzybnica was a small community that sourced their food from the upland. It is possible that this community was involved in the care of the stone circles, and the circles themselves may have been places of gatherings for local communities. However, it should be noted that only about 20 % of the graves found at the site were analyzed. The lack of migrants may be due to the low mobility of this group or methodological limitations related to the post-glacial nature of the geological substrate. The Jijal Complex is considered one of the largest Neo-Tethyan remnants in the intra-oceanic Cretaceous–Palaeogene Kohistan Arc of Pakistan. This complex largely consists of gabbros, peridotites, and chromitites. Previous studies documented the genesis of gabbros and chromitites in detail; however, detailed geochemistry and magma genesis were lacking. In this investigation, we present whole-rock geochemical and platinum group elements (PGEs) data of Jijal peridotites (dunites and harzburgites). The objectives of this study are to elucidate magmatic processes and tectonic regimes involved in the formation of peridotites, factors influencing the concentration and dispersion of PGEs in them, and their tectonic evolution. The investigated peridotite samples are depleted in magmaphile major elements (Al2O3: 0.23–0.57, TiO2: 0.01–0.04, and CaO: 0.08–0.69 wt%), relative to the primitive mantle values, reflecting melt-rock interaction during their magmatic evolution. In addition, rare-earth element (REE) contents in harzburgites are relatively higher compared to the dunites; however, both rock types exhibit depletion with respect to the chondrite-normalized values. The obvious negative anomalies of Nb, Zr, and enriched LREE and large ion lithophiles collectively substantiate their association with depleted arc-type mantle components, metasomatism, and melt/fluid-rock reactions after partial melting episodes. Bulk-rock and geochemical modelling of PGEs data of the peridotites suggest their shallow depth spinel-bearing depleted heterogeneous mantle source and generation from refractory mantle residuum along with boninitic signatures in a supra-subduction zone (SSZ). The PGE's geochemistry additionally reveals that partial melting, fractionation, metasomatism, and sulphur under-saturation were the key factors that controlled the concentration and distribution of PGEs in the studied rocks. The boninitic features of the Jijal peridotites are equated with intraoceanic fore-arc followed by subduction initiation, and melt-rock reactions in a hydrated forearc mantle, indicating robust evidence of mantle depletion and pervasive refertilisation in an embryonic Neo-Tethyan arc system. Tectonically, the investigated rocks encapsulate vestiges of the Cretaceous Tethyan Ocean and record multifaceted history from boninitic to slab-proximal island arc affinity in compliance with an intraoceanic SSZ fore-arc regime coherent with the subduction inception. The infectious bursal disease virus (IBDV) is a significant pathogen affecting the poultry industry worldwide. Its epidemiological history has been marked by the emergence of strains with different antigenic, pathogenic, and genetic features, some of which have shown notable spread potential. The A2dB1b genotype, also known as novel variant, has become widespread and gained increased relevance in IBDV epidemiology. This genotype was described in China in the 2010s and rapidly spread in Asia and Africa. The present study describes the circulation of the A2dB1b genotype in Argentina. Applying a next-generation sequencing approach, we obtained the complete coding sequence of 18 Argentine viruses. The high level of genomic homogeneity observed amongst these viruses, their monophyletic clustering in both partial and complete segments A and B derived phylogenies, and their close relatedness to some Chinese strains suggest that a unique transcontinental spread event from China to Argentina occurred recently. The apparent success of the A2dB1b genotype spreading throughout Asia, Africa, and South America may partially be due to specific amino acid characteristics. Novel residues in the hypervariable region of VP2 may help A2dB1b IBDVs evade the protection elicited by the applied commercial vaccines. Our findings underscore the importance of continuous characterization of field samples and evaluation of the control measures currently applied to fight against this specific IBDV genotype. This short commentary on the legacy and significance of Peter Fitzpatrick's scholarship tells of the divergent approaches he and I take in relation to the "feminine" in the writings of French poet, playwright, fictional author, and theorist, Hélène Cixous. Peter, on his side, is ever reminding us of the constituent connection between law and its origin and the impossibility of the "feminine law" escaping a scheme fixated on a specific patriarchal content. I, on my side, am optimistically yearning for a Cixousian "feminine" who eludes a return to the origin and who fearlessly transgresses the law(s) of the patriarchal. Herein, I theorize the essential difference between Fitzpatrick's "feminine law" and my reading of the law of the Cixousian "feminine" as relating back to our (differing?) approaches to creativity and originality. To my mind, on the question of law's creativity, Peter aligns less with Cixous and more with Jacques Derrida, who many have accused of positing a negative conception of creation. Applied to Peter, while ever endeavoring to situate law in relation to creative undertakings, such as literature and poetry, following his determinate/responsiveness model, the persistence of the negative is inescapable and the "feminine" is always already integral to law. Main conclusion: The key genetic variation underlying the evo-devo of ICS in Solanaceae may be further pinpointed using an integrated strategy of forward and reverse genetics studies under the framework of phylogeny. The calyx of Physalis remains persistent throughout fruit development. Post-flowering, the fruiting calyx is inflated rapidly to encapsulate the berry, giving rise to a “Chinese lantern” structure called inflated calyx syndrome (ICS). It is unclear how this novelty arises. Over the past 2 decades, the role of MADS-box genes in the evolutionary development (evo-devo) of ICS has mainly been investigated within Solanaceae. In this review, we analyze the main achievements, challenges, and new progress. ICS acts as a source for fruit development, provides a microenvironment to protect fruit development, and assists in long-distance fruit dispersal. ICS is a typical post-floral trait, and the onset of its development is triggered by specific developmental signals that coincide with fertilization. These signals can be replaced by exogenous gibberellin and cytokinin application. MPF2-like heterotopic expression and MBP21-like loss have been proposed to be two essential evolutionary events for ICS origin, and manipulating the related MADS-box genes has been shown to affect the ICS size, sepal organ identity, and/or male fertility, but not completely disrupt ICS. Therefore, the core genes or key links in the ICS biosynthesis pathways may have undergone secondary mutations during evolution, or they have not yet been pinpointed. Recently, we have made some encouraging progress in acquiring lantern mutants in Physalis floridana. In addition to technological innovation, we propose an integrated strategy to further analyze the evo-devo mechanisms of ICS in Solanaceae using forward and reverse genetics studies under the framework of phylogeny. Rising health concerns regarding chronic diseases call for exploring natural sources of antioxidants and factors that influence their activity. This study evaluated the diversity of 112 sesame germplasms from Africa and Asia based on ten agronomic traits (seven quantitative and three qualitative), two antioxidant activities (ABTS and DPPH radical scavenging activities), and the content of one metabolite (TPC). TPC, DPPH, and ABTS were in the ranges of 4.98–87.88 µg GAE/mg DE, 3.97–46.23 µg AAE/mg DE, and 3.42–176.01 µg TE/mg DE, respectively. Statistical analyses revealed significant variations in agronomic traits, TPC, and antioxidant activities among the sesame germplasms (p < 0.05). Furthermore, the individual and interaction effects of seed color and the continent of origin on the levels of the quantitative traits, TPC, ABTS, and DPPH were analyzed, and the correlation among the traits was further evaluated. Diversity in TPC, ABTS, and DPPH was significantly associated with seed color and most of the quantitative agronomic traits (p < 0.05) but not with continent of origin. Principal component analysis revealed TPC, ABTS, DPPH, and five quantitative traits as the most discriminant traits. In general, six sesame accessions with high TPC and antioxidant activities (IT194356, IT170094, IT29971, IT185998, IT104246, and IT169623) as well as important agronomic traits were identified and, hence, could be used for developing improved sesame varieties. Quinoa is emerging as a key seed crop for global food security due to its ability to grow in marginal environments and its excellent nutritional properties. Because quinoa is partially allogamous, we have developed quinoa inbred lines necessary for molecular genetic analysis. Our comprehensive genomic analysis showed that the quinoa inbred lines fall into three genetic subpopulations: northern highland, southern highland, and lowland. Lowland and highland quinoa are the same species, but have very different genotypes and phenotypes. Lowland quinoa has relatively small grains and a darker grain color, and is widely tested and grown around the world. In contrast, the white, large-grained highland quinoa is grown in the Andean highlands, including the regionwhere quinoa originated, and is exported worldwide as high-quality quinoa. Recently, we have shown that viral vectors can be used to regulate endogenous genes in quinoa, paving the way for functional genomics to reveal the diversity of quinoa. However, although a high-quality assembly has recently been reported for a lowland quinoa line, genomic resources of the quality required for functional genomics are not available for highland quinoa lines. Here we present high-quality chromosome-level genome assemblies for two highland inbred quinoa lines, J075 representing the northern highland line and J100 representing the southern highland line, using PacBio HiFi sequencing and dpMIG-seq. In addition, we demonstrate the importance of verifying and correcting reference-based scaffold assembly with other approaches such as linkage maps. The assembled genome sizes of J075 and J100 are 1.29 and 1.32 Gb,with contigs N50 of 66.3 and 12.6Mb, andscaffoldN50of 71.2 and70.6Mb, respectively, comprising 18 pseudochromosomes. The repetitive sequences of J075 and J100 represent 72.6% and 71.5% of the genome, the majority of which are long terminal repeats, representing 44.0% and 42.7% of the genome, respectively. The de novo assembled genomes of J075 and J100 were predicted to contain 65,303 and 64,945 protein-coding genes, respectively. The high quality genomes of these highland quinoa lines will facilitate quinoa functional genomics research on quinoa and contribute to the identification of key genes involved in environmental adaptation and quinoa domestication. Objective: Classification guides the surgical approach and predicts prognosis. However, existing classifications of spinal schwannomas often result in a high 'unclassified' rate. Here, we aim to develop a new comprehensive classification for spinal schwannomas based on their presumed origin. We compared the new classification with the existing classifications regarding the rate of 'unclassified'. Finally, we assessed the surgical strategies, outcomes, and complications according to each type of the new classification. Methods: A new classification with 9 types was created by analyzing the anatomy of spinal nerves and the origin of significant tumor portions and cystic components in preoperative magnetic resonance images. A total of 482 patients with spinal schwannomas were analyzed to compare our new classification with the existing classifications. We defined 'unclassified' as the inability to classify a patient with spinal schwannoma using the classification criteria. Surgical approaches and outcomes were also aligned with our new classification. Results: Our classification uniquely reported no 'unclassified' cases, indicating full applicability. Also, the classification has demonstrated usefulness in predicting the surgical outcome with the approach planned. Gross total removal rates reached 88.0% overall, with type 1 and type 2 tumors at 95.3% and 96.0% respectively. The approach varied with tumor type, with laminectomy predominantly used for types 1, 2, and 9, and facetectomy with posterior fixation used for type 3 tumors. Conclusion: The new classification for spinal schwannomas based on presumed origin is applicable to all spinal schwannomas. Calcretes are indurated terrestrial carbonates that are widespread in arid and semi-arid settings and serve as important archives of present and past environments. Here, we use geochemical tools to explore the nature and origin of calcretes documented from tropical Niue Island in the Southwest Pacific. The study recognizes two types of calcretes that differ in their mineral assemblage, microfabrics, elemental chemistry, and carbon and oxygen isotopes. The calcretes common in the paleo-lagoon soils consist of 90% low-Mg calcite and ~10% highly weathered Mg-Al silicates. These pedogenic calcretes formed in the soil profiles within the vadose zone bear the following distinctions: (i) Fe/Al ratio of 0.75, identical to the ratio in soils (Fe/Al = 0.76 ± 0.5), substantiating the link between the calcretes and soils; (ii) presence of rhizoliths, root voids, micritic nodules, and clasts, which are consistent with a pedogenic calcrete fabric; and (iii) 13C and 18O depletions of −10.6‰ and −5.3‰, respectively, which are compatible with carbon sources from microbial and root respiration, as well as formation in oxygen isotope equilibrium with vadose waters. Unlike the pedogenic calcrete, a rare calcrete from the coastal terrace contains an exceptionally rare hydrotalcite [Mg6Al2(CO3)(OH)16(H2O)4] mineral (65%) coated by microbial films. We contend that the hydrotalcite-rich calcrete was deposited through interaction of dolomite with seawater, similar to the method of producing hydrotalcite in the laboratory. 13C and 18O enrichments of 0.8 to 1.7‰ and −1.0 to −1.6‰, respectively, are in agreement with (i) mixed carbon sources consisting of microbial CO2 degassing, seawater HCO3, and dolomite dissolution, and (ii) oxygen isotope equilibration with seawater-derived fluid. So far, species of the genus Isonychia Eaton, 1871 have been reported to have transparent or partially pigmented wings, particularly their hindwings. A new species, I. fuscimarginata sp. n., recently collected from southern China, shows a different case. Both its forewings and hindwings have striking reddish brown to chocolate margins and stripes. Besides that, the entirely dark brown forelegs, shortened but apically widened male penises, and the colour and spine patterns of nymphal gills are useful characters for identification. Purpose: The current systematic review with meta-analysis aimed to investigate the pooled prevalence of the superior thyroid artery (STA) pattern of origin (distinct or fused-common origin with adjacent arteries in the form of a common trunk). The standard and uncommon variants were also studied, considering the STA's exact surface of origin and the relationship with the upper border of the thyroid cartilage (TC, reference point), considering the laterality effect. Thus, the STA topographical anatomy was considered. Methods: An evidence-based systematic review with meta-analysis was performed according to the PRISMA 2020 guidelines. A literature search was conducted in four online databases using specific keywords, the pooled prevalence was calculated using statistical analysis in the R programming language, and multiple subgroup analyses were performed. Results: The most common distinct origin of the STA was from the external carotid artery (ECA) (56.94% pooled prevalence, 95%CI: 50.89–62.89), and the rarest one was from the internal carotid artery (ICA) (< 0.01%, 95%CI: 0.00–0.00). Common trunks were also investigated, with the thyrolingual trunk emanating from the ECA estimated at 0.61% (95%CI: 0.21–1.14), representing the most common. Subgroup analysis based on the nationality, type of study, and sample size, as well as a comparison between left and right sides and males and females, were investigated. Conclusions: The most common STA origin was estimated as the ECA, the medial surface of origin, and above the TC upper border. Adequate knowledge of STA origin is paramount for surgeons, especially during thyroidectomy, not to cause iatrogenic injury to the external branch of the superior laryngeal nerve. Mahai Basin (MH), located in the northern Qaidam Basin (QB), possesses abundant K-rich brine resources. The investigation on the origin of deep K-rich confined brine and the variations in K–Mg elements corresponding to the evolution in MH shed light on the significance of assessment and utilization of brine deposits. This study presents multiple isotopes (δ18O–δD, 87Sr/86Sr) and hydrochemical characteristics for various waters (including river water, surface brine, intercrystalline brine, confined brine and anticlinal brine) in the MH. Our findings corroborate that: (1) confined brine exhibits relatively high K+ (average value of 6.88 g/L) and low Ca2+–Sr2+ concentrations, compared to anticlinal brine, and its chemical composition resembles the evolution of Yuqia River in Ca–SO4–HCO3 diagram, suggesting that contemporary river water is the primary source of confined brine. (2) The δ18O–δD values of confined brine in MH ranged from − 17.80 to − 27.40‰ and 1.50 to 2.40‰, respectively, and fall on the right field of the local evaporation line, indicating successive evaporation and concentration processes. (3) The 87Sr/86Sr ratios (0.71142–0.71145) of confined brine fall between river water (0.71150–0.71183) and anticlinal brine (0.71135), combining with river water and confined brine which exhibit low Sr content, and further confirming the origin of confined brine is a mixture by river and anticlinal brine and much river recharge budget. (4) Considering the evolution of sedimentary facies (Dezongmahai Lake area as an example) and the gradual increase in K and Mg contents in MH, the enrichment of K and Mg exhibits a certain correlation with the evolution of MH. The wine market is affected by the origin of wines, but the current wine traceability system has some limitations. The idea of geographical authenticity and quality has increased as one of the most important parameters influencing consumers' preferences. Chemical parameters such as total polyphenolic content (TPC), alcohol and organic acid content (total acids, malic and tartaric acids), and antioxidant activity were observed in this work at 15 dry white wines of varieties Pinot blanc, Riesling, Sauvignon blanc, and Chardonnay, which originated from three different countries. FTIR and spectrophotometry methods (TPC and DPPH) were used and chemometric approaches such as ANOVA and PCA were selected as the most important for evaluation. In general, high levels of malic acid, TPC, and antioxidant activity were detected in Austrian wines. Pinot blanc, Chardonnay, and Sauvignon from the same producing region in Austria showed higher results. The higher overall acid concentration was a distinguishing feature of the Slovakian Sauvignon and Riesling varieties, particularly in the case of tartaric acid. Austrian samples showed significantly higher antioxidant activity compared to Hungarian Chardonnay (p = 0.002) and Sauvignon (p = 0.007), comparable to TPC. The crab-eating raccoon (Procyon cancrivorus) is a carnivoran of the family Procyonidae geographically distributed in Central and South America. It is a scansorial species with more terrestrial than arboreal abilities. Previous studies have described the intrinsic shoulder and brachial muscles in this species; however, the terminology and some muscle attachments differ among them. Besides, these studies did not consider the innervation to infer the evolutionary derivation of the muscles, and did not address the arterial supply. The present study aimed to analyze the anatomical arrangement of the intrinsic shoulder and brachial muscles in six Procyon cancrivorus specimens fixed with 10% formaldehyde. The shape, origin, insertion, arterial supply, and variations were described. Furthermore, the innervation previously reported was reviewed again in detail to infer the evolutionary derivation of these muscles. Differences were found with previously reported findings in the same species and other procyonids. Some intraspecific anatomical variants were discovered, such as an accessory head in the biceps brachii muscle bilaterally; a biceps brachii muscle joined to the brachialis muscle unilaterally; and a fusion of the lateral and accessory heads of the triceps brachii muscle. Tensor fasciae antebrachii muscle is divided into two parts in most cases, which are innervated by the radial nerve. The anconeus medialis muscle is independent of the triceps brachii muscle and is innervated by the ulnar nerve. In conclusion, these muscles in P. cancrivorus potentially conserve the evolutionary derivation of the last common ancestor of mammals based on the topology, anatomical variations, and innervation. Spanish like any other language is the product of its history and culture. Numbers are all around us and play a crucial role in our everyday lives; therefore, idioms with both cardinal and ordinal numerals which do not determine their meaning not only are commonly used in Mexican Spanish but also permeate everyday language making it efficient and economical on the one hand yet expressive and eloquent on the other. Most idiomatic expressions with numbers originated in Spain, came to be used by Latin American peoples and are still widespread in the region; others, on the contrary, are in use only in Mexico or other Latin American countries. The etymology of some colloquial phrases is clear, which makes them easy to understand, while others may be of unknown origin. Expressions with cardinal numerals appear to be more productive than those with ordinal numerals. In some cases, idioms with cardinal and ordinal numerals coincide in meaning since idiomatic expressions represent human actions and feelings; as a result, both types of phrases convey meanings related to emotions, opportunity and socio-economic circumstances.

Abstract Backstroke has been thoroughly investigated in the context of sports science. However, we have no knowledge about the nationalities of the fastest age group backstroke swimmers. Therefore, the present study intended to investigate the nationalities of the fastest backstroke swimmers. For all World Masters Championships held between 1986 and 2024, the year of competition, the first and last name, the age, and the age group, and both the stroke and the distance were recorded for each swimmer. Descriptive data were presented using mean, standard deviation, maximum and minimum values, and confidence intervals. The top ten race times for each swimming distance and sex were identified for descriptive purposes. Nationalities were then grouped into six categories: the top five nationalities with the most appearances in the backstroke swimming top ten times by distance each year and one group consisting of all other nationalities. The Kruskal–Wallis test compared nationality differences, followed by Bonferroni-adjusted pairwise comparisons to identify specific distinctions. Between 1986 and 2024, most age group backstroke swimmers (39.6%) competed in the 50 m event (11,964, 6206 women, and 5,758 men), followed by the 100 m event (32.3%, n = 9764, 5157 women, and 4607 men), and the 200 m event (28.1%, n = 8483, 4511 women, and 3,972 men). Germany had the highest number of top ten female swimmers in the 50 m backstroke distance. Brazil had the highest number of top ten male swimmers in the same distance. The USA had the highest number of female and male swimmers among the top ten in the 100 m and 200 m backstroke distances. Germany and Great Britain were the only countries with swimmers in the top ten for all female backstroke distances. Brazil, the USA, Italy, and Germany were the countries that had swimmers in the top ten for all male backstroke distances. In summary, the fastest backstroke age group swimmers originated from Germany, Brazil, USA, Great Britain, and Italy, where differences between the sexes and race distances exist.

Abstract Background Canine circovirus (CanineCV), a non-enveloped virus with a circular DNA genome, has been identified in various avian and mammalian species, including domestic and wild canids. This study aimed to comprehensively analyze the prevalence of CanineCV across diverse animal species in 11 provinces of China. Results A total of 1,666 serum samples were collected, revealing a 5.82% prevalence of CanineCV in dogs, with the highest rates being observed in southern and eastern China. Phylogenetic analysis of 266 global CanineCV genomes sourced from the NCBI identified six distinct genotypes, elucidating the complex dynamics of their evolution. Evidence suggested a potential bat origin for CanineCV, with positive selection and high rates of evolution being observed. Recombination analysis revealed dynamic genetic exchange, highlighting the intricate nature of CanineCV evolution. Mutational analysis identified key amino acid substitutions likely to influence the virus’s adaptation. Additionally, glycosylation, palmitoylation, and SUMOylation sites were predicted, shedding light on crucial functional properties of the virus. Conclusions This study provides a global perspective on the origin, genetic diversity, and evolutionary dynamics of CanineCV. Understanding these factors is crucial for elucidating its epidemiology and potential health risks.

Toplumun ortaya çıktığı ilk dönemden itibaren düzen, köken ve yasa farklı bağlamlarda sürekli olarak tartışılmıştır. Bununla birlikte toplumlar bütün dinî inanış, kültür, gelenek ve görenek gibi unsurların temelinde yer alan yasalarını toplumsal düzenlerine dayandırırlar. Bu çalışmanın amacı toplumsal köken, yasa ve düzen bağlamında antik Mısır, antik Yunan ve Yahudilik özelinde bir inceleme gerçekleştirmektir. Araştırma sınırının bu düşünce sistemleriyle çizilmesinin gerekçesi, antik Mısır ve antik Yunan düşüncesinin mitolojik anlatıyı sunarken Yahudiliğin ise tek Tanrı inançlı bir yapıyı sunmasıdır. Çalışmada antik Mısır ve antik Yunan düşünce sistemlerinde kökenmitolojik anlatıyla, yasa ma’at ve themis kavramlarıyla, düzen ise bu kavramların yönetimin temel ilkesini oluşturmasıyla açıklanmıştır. Bunun yanı sıra, mitolojik anlatının ve bununla ilişkili olan kavramların yerini Yahudilikte kutsal kitap, ahit ve peygamberin aldığı tartışılmıştır.

The article explores the concept that the first relations falling under the subject of private international law originated in the primitive period. These relations include exogamy and incest taboos, the institution of hospitality and exchange agreements. Exogamy and incest taboos are fundamental relationships that emerged parallel to the development of society and law, forming he cornerstone of these constructs. These represent the earliest interactions involving “foreign persons” and are characterized by personal non-property character. Hospitality ties are linked to exogamy while exchange relationships follow subsequently. Intergroup agreements serve as primary mechanism for regulating these relations and lay the groundwork for the inception of the initial choice-of-law rules. The conflicts are not interstate but rather intergroup (intercommunal), similar to contemporary interpersonal or interlocal disputes. The author applies a number of methods such as comparative analysis, reconstruction, formal-logical, dialectical, natural science and historical analysis in this research. In conclusion, the author asserts that three key institutions emerged in the pre-state era, forming the foundation of modern PIL: exogamy (cross-border marrital and family relations), hospitality (foreigners’ law), and exchange (international contract law). During this period the first conflict resolution rules also emerged. The principle method for addressing conflict issues in primitive societies is the unified substantive approach through intergroup agreements. Additionally, archaic law incorporated conflicting principles like personal law and the law of the place where the action occurred. These conclusions are drawn through a reconstructive approach and are supported by archeology, genetics, anthropology, as well as domestic and foreign scholarly research on legal genesis.

During May–July 2023, a cluster of 7 patients at local hospitals in Florida, USA, received a diagnosis of Plasmodium vivax malaria. Whole-genome sequencing of the organism from 4 patients and phylogenetic analysis with worldwide representative P. vivax genomes indicated probable single parasite introduction from Central/South America.

Cannabidiol (CBD) is the main non-psychoactive phytocannabinoid derived from Cannabis sativa L. It is now an active pharmaceutical ingredient (API), given its usage in treating some types of pediatric epilepsy. For this reason, this compound requires a deep characterization in terms of purity and origin. Previous research work has shown two impurities in CBD samples from hemp inflorescences, namely, cannabidivarin (CBDV) and cannabidibutol (CBDB), while abnormal-cannabidiol (abn-CBD) has been described as the primary by-product that is generated from CBD synthesis. Both natural and synthetic CBD samples exhibit the presence of Δ9-tetrahydrocannabinol (Δ9-THC) and Δ8-THC. This study aimed to develop a new analytical method based on high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) with different detection systems to study the purity of CBD and to define its origin based on the impurity profile. In addition to the above-mentioned cannabinoids, other compounds, such as cannabigerovarin (CBGV), cannabigerol (CBG), cannabichromevarin (CBCV), and cannabichromene (CBC), were examined as potential discriminating impurities. Qualitative and quantitative analyses were carried out by UHPLC-HRMS and HPLC-UV/Vis, respectively. Principal component analysis was applied for statistical exploration. Natural CBD samples exhibited purities ranging between 97.5 and 99.7%, while synthetic samples were generally pure, except for three initially labeled as synthetic, revealing natural-derived impurities. To further confirm the origin of CBD samples, the presence of other two minor impurities, namely cannabidihexol (CBDH) and cannabidiphorol (CBDP), was assessed as unequivocal for a natural origin. Finally, an enantioselective HPLC analysis was carried out and the results confirmed the presence of the (–)-trans enantiomer in all CBD samples. Within the framework of this "Domain in Care" Seminar we assume part of the research we carry out about the epistemic and theological controversies that arise from nineteenth-century scientific activity about nature, humanity and spirituality of the inhabitants of Land of Fire. To this day, the interpretations and ideas of Fitz Roy and Darwin about the Fuegian peoples have been understood in a quite controversial way and based on stereotypes about what was considered scientific and theological in the Western Christian world, and especially in debates. between creationists and evolutionists in the British debate. Indeed, in the positions of both men there are epistemological and theological issues that have not been sufficiently explained in each and every one of their nuances and that are still present in our time. In their respective points of view linked to the history of science of the 18th and 19th centuries there are assumptions and ideas that have prevailed about science and faith that, reinterpreted, would allow us to overcome the dichotomies linked to naturalism and humanism that show the advances of British science of the time and attempts to advance a global and homogeneous understanding of the set of processes ofLife on the planet. Following the perspective of the history of science, we will highlight the main strengths of the assumptions of the controversy between experimental natural science and the Anglican Christianity of English society at the time, to show its interest for current debates on control and care. The Sichuan Basin in Southeastern China contains extensive bedded cherts dating back to the Late Ordovician–Early Silurian period. To investigate the origin and depositional environment of these cherts, we conducted a comprehensive study using field observations, thin sections microscopic, silicon isotope analysis, and major and trace element geochemistry of samples from three sections. Our results indicate that the cherts from Wufeng and Longmaxi formations are non-hydrothermal, normal biogenic seawater deposits mainly affected by terrigenous input and slightly associated with volcanic ash. Al2O3/(Al2O3 + Fe2O3T) and LaN/CeN ratios, δCe values and Fe2O3T/TiO2 − Al2O3/(Al2O3 + Fe2O3T), Fe2O3T/(100 − SiO2) − Al2O3/(100 − SiO2), 100 × (Fe2O3T/SiO2) – 100 × (Al2O3/SiO2), and LaN/CeN − Al2O3/(Al2O3 + Fe2O3T) discrimination diagrams indicated that the bedded cherts deposited in the continental margin environment. Peach (Prunus persica), a significant economic fruit tree in the Rosaceae family, is extensively cultivated in temperate and subtropical regions due to its abundant genetic diversity, robust adaptability, and high nutritional value. Originating from China over 4000 years ago, peaches were introduced to Persia through the Silk Road during the Han Dynasty and gradually spread to India, Greece, Rome, Egypt, Europe, and America. Currently grown in more than 80 countries worldwide, the expansion of peach cultivation in Egypt is mainly due to the development and utilization of peach varieties with low chilling requirements. These varieties exhibit unique phenotypic characteristics such as early maturity, reduced need for winter cold temperatures, low water requirements, and high economic value. In this study, a systematic analysis was conducted on the genetic characteristics and kinship relationships of peaches with low chilling requirements in Egypt. We conducted a comprehensive evolutionary and Identity-by-Descent (IBD) analysis on over 300 peach core germplasm resources, including Egyptian cultivars with low chilling requirements, to investigate their origin and genetic characteristics. The evolutionary analysis revealed that 'Bitter almond' is closely related to China's wild relative species Prunus tangutica Batal, while 'Early grand' shares one branch with Chinese ornamental peach cultivars, and 'Nemaguard' clusters with some ancient local varieties from China. The IBD analysis also indicated similar genetic backgrounds, suggesting a plausible origin from China. Similarly, the analysis suggested that 'Swelling' may have originated from the Czech Republic while 'Met ghamr' has connections to South Africa. 'Desert red', 'Early swelling', and 'Florida prince' are likely derived from Brazil. These findings provide valuable insights into the genetic characteristics of Egyptian peach cultivars. They offer a significant foundation for investigating the origin and spread of cultivated peaches worldwide and serve as a valuable genetic resource for breeding low chilling requirement cultivars, which is of considerable significance for the advancement of peach cultivation in Egypt. This paper discusses the origin of the superfamily Popanoceratoidea Hyatt and substantiates the hypothesis that the suborder Cyclolobina (order Goniatitida) evolved from the family Glaphyritidae Ruzhencev et Bogoslovskaya. The genus Tabantalites Ruzhencev is proposed as an intermediate form between Vidrioceratidae Plummer et Scott and Popanoceratidae Hyatt. The early phylogeny of popanoceratids in the Early Permian is considered in detail (Protopopanoceras → Propopanoceras → Popanoceras, Pamiropopanoceras). Biogeography of Popanoceratoidea is discussed. The origin of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS‐CoV‐2) is contentious. Most studies have focused on a zoonotic origin, but definitive evidence such as an intermediary animal host is lacking. We used an established risk analysis tool for differentiating natural and unnatural epidemics, the modified Grunow–Finke assessment tool (mGFT) to study the origin of SARS‐COV‐2. The mGFT scores 11 criteria to provide a likelihood of natural or unnatural origin. Using published literature and publicly available sources of information, we applied the mGFT to the origin of SARS‐CoV‐2. The mGFT scored 41/60 points (68%), with high inter‐rater reliability (100%), indicating a greater likelihood of an unnatural than natural origin of SARS‐CoV‐2. This risk assessment cannot prove the origin of SARS‐CoV‐2 but shows that the possibility of a laboratory origin cannot be easily dismissed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Chinese liquor (Baijiu), unique liquor produced in China and among the six world-renowned distilled liquors, is never a follower of others. Flavor is the essential characteristics of Baijiu which largely affect consumers' acceptance and selection. Though the flavor of Baijiu has been widely explored, the majority of research and review mainly focused on the volatile compounds in Baijiu. The research status on detection, source and flavor contribution of nonvolatile compounds in Baijiu is clarified in the article based on available literatures and knowledge. The nonvolatile composition of Baijiu is the result of contributions of different degrees from each step involved in the production process. Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry combined with derivatization and ultra-high performance liquid chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry is the generally adopted methods for the characterization of nonvolatile compounds in Baijiu. Certain nonvolatile compounds are taste-active compounds. Cross-modal interactions caused by nonvolatile composition could affect the aroma intensity of flavor compounds in Baijiu. The work provides numerous incompletely explored but useful points for the flavor chemistry of Baijiu and lays a theoretical foundation for the better understanding of Baijiu flavor and rapid development of Baijiu industry. Accurate origin determination of seafood is crucial for consumer trust and safety. This study was performed to develop a machine learning-based single-nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) analysis technique to determine the origin of Acetes species in salted small-shrimp products. Mitochondrial DNA (COI and 16S rRNA) analysis revealed genetic variations among species and origins. Eight candidate SNPs were identified, six of which were developed into markers for genotyping analysis. Using the developed markers, an SNP array was created and SNP data from salted small-shrimp samples were obtained. Machine learning analysis using a supervised learning algorithm achieved 100% accuracy in classifying the origin of Acetes based on SNP data. This method offers a reliable method for regulatory bodies to combat food fraud and ensure product integrity. The approach can be further improved by expanding the data set to encompass a wider range of species and origins. The article considers regional issues of the Kazakh transtoposystem. There are a number of problematic issues related to cross-border Kazakh toponymy. The article analyzes only one aspect – the status of binary names in the cross-border toposystem. The goal is to study how obvious the binary opposition is there, considering the etymology of toponyms based on semantic opposition. The toposystem of the Northern and Western regions bordering Russia was used as the empirical material for the study. According to the border administrative-regional division, a number of districts of such regions of the country as North Kazakhstan, Pavlodar, Kostanay, Western Kazakhstan, Aktobe, and Atyrau border with Russia. In the article, a series of binary names along the toponyms of this cross-border zone is formed. In particular, Úlken-Kіshі (Big-Small), Aq-Qara (Black-White), Qara-Sary (Black-Yellow), Jaqsy-Jaman (Good-Bad), Jyly-Sýyq (Warm-Cold), and Ashy-Tushy (Bitter-Fresh) are analyzed. The difference between toponymic binary names and lexical antonyms is considered. We discuss the fact that the contradiction in lexical antonyms is clearly expressed, but in binary opposition along toponyms, the contradiction may not be complete. It is reported that the contradiction of toponyms is recognized only in the toponymic context, and sometimes it is even possible to form a related pair, rather than a semantic contradiction. Biblical creationism proposes that the reality around us was created supernaturally by a personal and transcendent Being, who first shaped an earth that was disordered and then filled it with all kinds of life; At the end of the process, he created the human being to represent him visibly in the government or administration of other things. On the other hand, naturalistic evolutionism proposes that the reality that surrounds us is the product of a process in which, without any type of supernatural intervention, natural laws, acting on matter over time and at random, gave rise in a way gradually to the universe, to the inhabited earth and to organisms. Which of the two fits more with the evidence and the reality that surrounds us? Although it is true that trying to explain the origin of both have limitations, the reality is that Biblical creationism is not only more consistent with the evidence, but also with social reality. The Baise horse, an indigenous horse breed mainly distributed in the Baise region of Guangxi province in southwest China, has a long history as draft animal. However, there is a lack of research regarding the origin and ancestral composition of the Baise horse. In this study, whole‐genome resequencing data from 236 horses of seven Chinese indigenous horse breeds, five foreign horse breeds, and four Przewalski's horses were used to investigate the relationships between the Baise horse and other horse breeds. The results showed that foreign horse breeds had no significant impact on the formation of the Baise horse. The two southwestern horse populations, the Debao pony and the Jinjiang horse, exhibit the closest genetic affinity with the Baise horse. This is consistent with their adjacent geographical distribution. Analysis of the migration route revealed a gene flow from the Chakouyi horse into the Baise horse. In summary, our results confirm that the formation of the Baise horse did not involve participation from foreign breeds. Geographical distance emerges as a crucial factor in determining the genetic relationships with the Baise horse. Gene flows of indigenous horse breeds along ancient routes of trade activities had played a role in the formation of the Baise horse. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Statistical dependences of orbit parameters in four groups of sungrazing comets are studied. It is shown that the perihelia of comets of the Kreutz family are clustered around two planes (great circles of the celestial sphere). Numerical data on the observed bifurcation of perihelion distribution are provided. One of the planes basically coincides with the plane obtained by averaging orbit parameters Ω and i. The second plane with parameters Ωp = 77.7° and ip = 266.1° has an inclination of approximately 64° relative to the first plane. The distant nodes of cometary orbits relative to this plane are clustered at a distance of approximately 2 a.u. On the basis of the above, one of the authors hypothesizes that the comet group originates from the collision of a large comet with a meteoroid stream. This study examines some counterarguments expressed regarding this hypothesis. It is shown, based on a particular case, that the assumptions about the concentration of comet perihelia near one point and along two circles of the celestial sphere are quite compatible. The distribution of orbit inclinations relative to this plane is analyzed and a sharp maximum near 90° is noted. The maximum indicates that the parent body experienced lateral impacts of meteoroid bodies in all probability, which caused defragmentation of the former. New confirmations of the suggested hypothesis about the presence of another group of sungrazers have been found. It is assumed that the correlation dependence between the values of the perihelion parameters and ascending nodes of cometary orbits is of an evolutionary nature and is related to the group formation process. New relationships that concern the Meyer, Kracht, and Marsden groups are introduced. In particular, the authors have calculated the planes near which the cometary perihelia of these groups are concentrated. The example of the Meyer group illustrates the bifurcation of perihelia. Sargassum horneri golden tides are increasingly becoming a marine ecological problem in the Yellow Sea (YS) and East China Sea. To understand the genetic relationship between the attached S. horneri along the China coast and the floating biomass in the YS, we used partial rbcL, ITS2, cox1, cox3, and cob-cox2 to analyze the population genetic evolution of 165 Sargassum samples. The results showed that all samples were a single species of S. horneri. Partial sequences of each gene had major haplotypes, and other haplotypes evolved from the occurrence of base mutations. The cob-cox2 gene haplotype research showed only the attached samples from ZJ, LN, and KR contained Hap3, and the distribution proportions of Hap2 and Hap4 in SS and the YS were closest to the distribution of the attached samples from SD. These novel findings provided information about the genetic evolutionary relationship between attached S. horneri along the coast of China and floating S. horneri in the YS, as well as new ideas for tracing the source of floating S. horneri in the YS from a molecular biological perspective.
