Elephants in Artis Zoo (Amsterdam, the Netherlands) produce high quantities of manure daily, which is currently being discarded as waste. Potentially, elephant manure could be used as a fertiliser and/or soil improver. To explore this, an aerobic incubation experiment was carried out in the laboratory. Results were evaluated by modelling, using default values of dairy cow slurry (DCS) for comparison. It was hypothesised that 1) elephant manure would mineralise slowly and, 2) release relatively small amounts of N compared to dairy cow slurry. The carbon content and C:N-ratio in elephant manure were 419 g kg-1 and 36:1, respectively. The estimated humification coefficient of elephant manure was 0.32, indicating faster mineralisation than of DCS in The Netherlands (0.7). Modelling the results showed that after 10 years of annual additions of 100 kg Norg ha-1, total carbon build-up from elephant manure and DCS was ca. 4800 and 6800 kg ha-1, and total nitrogen mineralisation was 540 and 490 kg N ha-1, respectively. The higher mineralisation rate from elephant manure compared to DCS could be due to occurrence of priming during the incubation experiment and/or different qualities of organic matter fractions. It was concluded from this experiment that elephant manure could be suitable as both a soil improver and fertiliser, and recommendations for follow-up research are given.

In the Netherlands, there are surpluses of pig manure, which currently represent a negative value. At the same time, pig manure contains valuable ingredients for the production of biomass. These ingredients can be potentially be converted to feed and vermicompost by earthworms, such as Eisenia fetida and Dendrobaena veneta. Thereby producing alternative protein sources for feed and alternatives for artificial fertilizer. The number of feasible business cases in which the pig manure is upgraded has so far been limited.This is due both to the efficiency of the technologies used and the legislation and regulations related to the pig manure. This report explores the profitability potential of vermicomposting solid pig manure by individual pig farmers.---In Nederland is een overschot aan varkensmest, dat momenteel een negatieve waarde heeft.Tegelijkertijd bevat varkensmest waardevolle ingrediënten voor de productie van biomassa. Several characteristics make vermicomposts interesting for agriculture (plant growth/health, soil health) such as their macronutrient content (N, P, K, organic matter) and specific components (humic acids, phytohormones, enzymes). This literature overview describes multiple researches on the effects of vermicompost in agriculture with a focus on macronutrient content and plant growth.

In this report an inventory is made about which existing and novel technologies are suitable for manure processing on the farm. This includes new stable concepts, to better valorize the manure streams and to see where issues arise. Each technique has a brief description, the quality of the in- and output of the manure is accessed and the potential of the technique on the farm is researched. Formulated is which techniques, or which combination of techniques has a future in the valorization of manure products from new stable concepts, and where more research is necessary to obtain the features or parameters of the systems. In deze rapportage is geïnventariseerd welke bestaande en nieuwe technologieën gebruikt kunnen worden voor de mestbewerking op de boerderij, ook bij nieuwe stalconcepten, om de meststromen beter te verwaarden en welke knelpunten daarbij optreden. Technieken zijn beschreven, de benodigde kwaliteit van de meststroom is bepaald en de potentie voor toepasbaarheid op boerderijschaal is onderzocht. Geformuleerd is welke technieken of welke combinatie van technieken toekomst zouden kunnen hebben voor een betere verwaarding van mestproducten bij nieuwe stalconcepten en waar nader onderzoek naar kenmerken en parameters gewenst is.

Black soldier fly (BSF) frass, resulting after bioconversion of organic materials by Hermetia illucens larvae can be used as fertilizer. This overview provides a literature summary of the main (macronutrient) components in frass and its reported effects on plant growth/health and soil. Frass composition is highly dependent on the substrate. Based on average composition, BSF frasses show resemblances to cow manure (C/N ratio, N content), pig slurry (P content), poultry manure (DM, Kcontent) and compost (DM). The frass has a higher organic matter content than compost and beforementioned manure types. Frass seems to be a fast acting fertilizer. Most of the nitrogen is organic,but ammonia content is highly variable. Reported effects on plant growth were often positive or neutra lbut also sometimes negative compared to organic and mineral control fertilizers and there seem to be maximum application rates above which positive effects diminish. Several authors mention that post-treatment of frass (for example by aerobic composting) is necessary to obtain a stable/mature product.Usually the frass is relatively high in P content, which may require extra N fertilizer addition. Severa lauthors state that chitin in the BSF frass likely benefits resistance to plant pathogens. Finally, adding frass can induce changes in the microbial community of the soil/plant rhizosphere. BSF frass can be used as a circular fertilizer in agriculture.

This document gives a short overview of the current (national and EU) legislation (as on December 2022) on the bioconversion of several organic streams by insect larvae and compost worms. Legislation concerns different substrates, the status of the invertebrates themselves and the status of the resulting insect frass and vermicompost. Dutch and EU legislation on the production of insect larvae as feed for farmed and pet animals has been developed and adapted in recent years, for example the allowance of different feed products from designated insect larvae species as fish, poultry and pig feed. The legislation is still in development. Recommendations are given.

Black soldier fly larvae (BSFL) are considered a commercially viable solution for global organic waste problems. The objective of this study was to assess the feasibility of rearing BSFL on a wide range of low-value waste streams and its potential to transform them into high-quality animal feed and fertilizer. Six waste streams of different origins were selected and each tested in triplicate. Several parameters were analysed: growth performance, waste reduction index (WRI), conversion efficiency (ECI) and larval composition. Frass composition was also analysed. Larvae reared on fast food waste (FFW) had the highest ECI and WRI and the lowest values when reared on pig manure slurry mixed with silage grass (PMLSG) and slaughter waste (SW). The highest protein content was found for larvae reared on mushroom stems (MS) although this substrate had the lowest protein content. Moreover, the frass nutritional profile was proportionally related to the substrate’s nutritional profile: the protein-rich substrate (SW) resulted in protein-rich frass and the low-protein substrate (MS) resulted in protein-poor frass. The same was true for the lipid content. In conclusion, this study showed that BSFL can be successfully reared on a wide range of waste streams that can affect the larval and frass chemical compositions.

This report describes five experiments to observe the growth of Dendrobaena veneta and Eisenia fetida on substrates originating from Avebe (potato starch and protein producer), Holland Malt (maltings) or others ( kitchen and garden wastes). The substrates include Tarra (Avebe), Secondary food industry Sludge (Holland Malt and Avebe), Barley Dust (Holland Malt), Germinated Barley (Holland Malt), Bokashi (Jansen Wijhe), Potato Peels (van Vulpen voeders), vegetable fruit and garden waste (van der Wal and Ogar), Apple pulp (van Vulpen voeders), Champost (Koolen champignons CNN) and Carrot and Pumpkin Peels (van Vulpen voeders). The compost worms’ growth was monitored for 4-6 weeks. The compost worms were able to convert the substrates into dry, light and powdery vermicompost high in nutrients and organic matter. The compost worms themselves increased in biomass and produced eggs. The protein content of the compost worms ranged between 57.1 and 68.3 % of DM, whereas the fat content ranged between 7.8 and 9.1% of DM. Tarra and Secondary food industry Sludge (Avebe) are suitable substrates for vermicomposting, when mixed with other substrates. Germinated Barley and Secondary Food Industry Sludge (Holland Malt) are less suitable for vermicomposting, due to substrate instability, even when mixed with other substrates. Additions of barley dust and chalk make the substrates’ texture and composition more suitable for the worms to feed on.

In an experiment described by Elissen et al. (2019) on anaerobic digestion of black soldierfly (BSF, Hermetia illucens) larvae frass, the frass had been previously hygienised due to Dutch law. However, when the frass would stay on the same premises this hygienisation step may not be necessary. A synergistic effect of mixing insect frass with cattle slurry would provide a more positive business case for the insect farmer, since the frass becomes an interesting co-substrate for digesters, resulting in lower disposal costs or even benefits. To determine this synergistic effect, three substrates were tested in lab-scale mesophilic anaerobic digestion tests: Insect frass of BSF larvae grown on agricultural side-streams, either hygienised at 60 °C for 24h or non hygienised and cattle slurry. Also combinations of cattle slurry with insect frass were tested. Biogas production was determined by measuring gas pressure and analysing gas composition. No synergistic effect of adding insect frass to cattle slurry was found in this experiment, and neither differences between hygienised and non hygienised insect frass were found. In other words, adding insect frass to a cattle slurry digester will not lead to an increase in biogas production different from that expected based on adding up biogas productions of the single substrates. However, the partial replacement of cattle slurry with insect frass will increase the amount of biogas produced per digester volume with a factor 3.5 to 9 for respectively 10 % and 30 % replacement. Therefore, it is still interesting to add insect frass to a cattle slurry digester.

In dit onderzoek zijn de mogelijkheden voor de agrarisch ondernemer onderzocht om in de bedrijfsvoering gebruik te maken van de H2Milkrun technologie. De H2Milkrun is een voertuig met een voorraad waterstof en een tankfaciliteit die bij bedrijven langs kan komen om de waterstofwerktuigen of opslagtanks of -bundels van die bedrijven te vullen. Er zijn twee opties waar een agrarische ondernemer een rol kan spelen. De eerste is om waterstof te produceren en dit te verkopen aan handelaren in waterstof die van de H2Milkrun technologie of andere transporttechnologie gebruik maken. De tweede optie is om waterstof die elders is geproduceerd te gebruiken in de eigen bedrijfsvoering om zo het gebruik van fossiele brandstoffen in de bedrijfsvoering te vervangen. Om deze opties te onderzoeken is een rekenmodel geconstrueerd. In het model wordt ervan uitgegaan dat er waterstof middels elektrolyse kan worden geproduceerd met hernieuwbare energiebronnen (zon en wind) en elektriciteit uit het net. De waterstof wordt onder druk tijdelijk opgeslagen op de locatie van de agrarisch ondernemer. Deze waterstof kan dan worden verkocht aan de H2Milkrun of een andere gashandelaar. Als de waterstof zelf wordt gebruikt in de bedrijfsvoering van de agrarisch ondernemer dan is er ook een waterstoftankstation nodig. In het model kan worden berekend hoeveel waterstof er nodig is om die diesel te vervangen afhankelijk van het bouwplan en de omvang van het bedrijf. Met het rekenmodel is de kostprijs berekend van de waterstof die kan worden geleverd aan de H2Milkrun. Veel van de beoogde te tanken voertuigen worden ingeschat met een tankinhoud van 20 kg waterstof. In het ontwerp van H2Milkrun is opgenomen dat er 259 kg waterstof kan worden vervoerd zodat diverse tankbeurten mogelijk zijn. Om de waterstof die de H2Milkrun meeneemt (259 kg) dagelijks te kunnen leveren is ca. 800 kW aan elektrolyser capaciteit nodig. Omdat veel netaansluitingen bij agrarisch ondernemers niet toereikend zijn voor 800 kW zijn er 4 elektrolysers van 200 kW doorgerekend, met 300 kWp PV, 75 kg opslag van waterstof op 500 bar en 7300 vollasturen per elektrolyser. Waterstof kan dan voor ca. €14,50/kg geproduceerd worden. Indien er 900 kWp PV panelen in plaats van 300 kWp PV panelen wordt gebruikt dan kan waterstof voor €12,60/kg geproduceerd worden. Om als agrarisch ondernemer zelf (groene) waterstof op te wekken zijn diverse componenten nodig zoals een elektrolyser, compressor, opslagfaciliteit, private tankinstallatie, hernieuwbare energie opwekkers. Indien een agrarisch ondernemer waterstof opwekt om zelf in de bedrijfsvoering te gebruiken dan worden er meerkosten per jaar gemaakt ten opzichte van gebruik van diesel. Hoewel dieselprijzen anno 2022 erg volatiel zijn is er in het onderzoek met €1,40/liter diesel gerekend. Er is ongeveer 0,15 kg H2 nodig om een liter diesel te vervangen. De met het model berekende kosten van de hoeveelheid waterstof equivalent aan een liter diesel liggen tussen de €1,91 (productiekosten van waterstof van €12,60/kg bij 200 kW elektrolyser en 900 kWp PV) en €3,33 (productiekosten van waterstof van €21,88/kg bij 19,2 kW elektrolyser en 350 kWp PV). In plaats van enkel waterstof voor het eigen gebruik te produceren om diesel te vervangen lijkt het met de huidige situatie meer haalbaar om de focus te leggen op het produceren van waterstof en dit te verkopen om daarmee de meerkosten te dekken die gemaakt worden ten opzichte van een conventionele diesel situatie. Het is afhankelijk van een specifiek bedrijf hoe de verkoopprijs van waterstof zal uitvallen, maar in de grootte van een 500 kW elektrolyser ligt de verkoopprijs rond de €13,50/kg. De berekeningen die in dit onderzoek zijn gedaan geven aan dat op dit moment het gebruik van eigen geproduceerde waterstof nog niet concurrerend is t.o.v. het gebruik van diesel. Dit kan veranderen bij verder stijgende dieselprijzen, bij kostprijsverlaging van de productie van waterstof (bijvoorbeeld doordat componenten goedkoper worden) of juist door het in de markt valoriseren van het het gebruik van eigen waterstof. In dit onderzoek is daarom ook een beknopt mogelijk toekomstscenario geschetst. Door prijsdalingen in verschillende componenten van het waterstofproductie systeem kan de productieprijs op €4,04/kg uitkomen in 2030. De kosten van de hoeveelheid waterstof equivalent aan een liter diesel ligt dan rond de €0,61.

This report is part of the WUR flagship project Circularity by Design, embedded within the strategic investment theme Connected Circularity. The project aims to apply (re)design principles to develop a sustainable agri-food system within the Amsterdam Metropolitan Region. The organic fraction of household waste in urban areas in the Netherlands is mostly not collected via a source-separation waste management system, but usually ends up within municipal residual solid waste fractions at central waste processing facilities. Source separation is seen as a way to lower financial and environmental burdens. The European revised Waste Framework Directive (2018/851/EU, §10) requires that all municipalities must plan and implement separate biowaste collection schemes (either via curb side or drop-off collection systems). Alternatively, municipalities can encourage citizens to dump their biowaste directly into home or community composting so it does not end up in the public collection systems. One means of doing so is decentralized (small-scale) worm composting, in which compost worms partly break down this waste and convert the remainder into worm compost and new worms/biomass. A prototype household worm composter was tested during 50 days on its ability to convert a defined food waste mixture (representative of what is wasted on average in Dutch households minus the unsuitable items such as sauces etc) into worm compost and new worm biomass. It was concluded that compost worms can be fed 72.6 % of the food waste produced in a typical Dutch household and almost 38 % of the food waste dry matter was broken down by the worms. The food waste contained ~72 % water. The compost samples had at least the same nitrogen use efficiencies as cattle dung slurry. Regarding heavy metals and pathogens, a food waste/worm compost sample from a similar composter complied with the standards for Keurcompost. Initially, conditions in the composter were beneficially for worm growth and waste processing but during the course of the experiment, there was too high moisture build-up. The design should be further improved to allow for more aeration and better passage of the processed food waste/worm compost out of the reactor. After solving these issues, the composter is useful for decentralized waste recycling/upcycling.

De PPS Landbouw en Energie richt zich op de rol die de landbouw in de energietransitie kan vervullen. In dit rapport is onderzocht wat de bijdrage van de landbouw aan de Regionale Energie Strategie (RES) van de Hoeksche Waard kan zijn. Op basis van data van Stedin (de lokale elektriciteitsnetbeheerder) is berekend hoeveel hernieuwbare energie de landbouw op dit moment opwekt en hoeveel hernieuwbare energie de landbouw potentieel nog extra kan opwekken door middel van zon op daken en kleine windmolens bij het erf. Uitgangspunt bij het in kaart brengen van de potentiële bijdrage van de landbouw was dat kleinschalige wind energie bij bedrijven mogelijk is. De landbouw in de Hoeksche Waard kan op basis van deze uitgangspunten naar verwachting ca. 13% bijdragen aan de RES doelstellingen. Het doel van de PPS Landbouw als vliegwiel voor de energietransitie is om invulling te geven aan derol van de landbouw in de energietransitie. Dit door het maximaliseren van de bijdrage van delandbouw op een wijze dat hernieuwbare energieproductie en consumptie een integraal rendabelonderdeel van een melkveebedrijf of akkerbouwbedrijf wordt. De belangrijkste energievraag zit metname in het stedelijke gebied waar de mogelijkheden voor hernieuwbare energieproductie gering zijn.Daarom is de rol van de landbouw in hernieuwbare energie productie een cruciale: de landbouw heeftde ruimte die nodig is om hernieuwbare energie te produceren en die potentie is op dit moment nogonvoldoende benut.In dit rapport is de mogelijke rol van de landbouw in het behalen van de RES doelstellingen van deHoeksche Waard in kaart gebracht op basis van zon op daken van landbouwbedrijven en door kleinewindmolens op boeren erven. Er is niet alleen gekeken naar productiecapaciteit (de RES doelstellingenzijn vooral een productie doelstelling) maar ook naar het benutten van de zelf geproduceerde energiein de eigen bedrijfsvoering zodat een beter beeld verkregen wordt hoeveel energie daadwerkelijkegeleverd of afgenomen wordt. Door achter de meter slim om te gaan met energie kan de landbouwook een rol spelen in het oplossen van problemen rond netcongestie. De landbouw kan veel betekenenin de energietransitie. Dit rapport laat specifiek voor de Hoeksche Waard zien hoeveel.Het voorliggende onderzoek is uitgevoerd door Wageningen Research – Open Teelten. De auteursdanken Stedin voor het meedenken en verwerken van de data en Peta watts voor het aanleveren vandata voor het berekenen van het eigen gebruik van de bedrijven.

Hebben honingbijen last van 5G, de vijfde generatie mobiele communicatie? Ontwikkelingen in mobiele communicatie en de benodigde antenne-installaties roepen steevast deze vraag op. Mobiele telefoons maken gebruik van elektromagnetische velden. Deze velden zouden mogelijk de navigatie van honingbijen kunnen verstoren met verhoogde kans op wintersterfte als gevolg, doordat het volk vliegbijen kwijtraakt en er minder voedsel de kast binnenkomt. Wij hebben bekeken welk onderzoek hiernaar is gedaan. Dat blijkt nogal beperkt te zijn. Vooralsnog lijken er geen aanwijzingen te bestaan voor schade bij honingbijen.

In deze notitie is de impact van kleinschalige winderenergie op het energieprofiel van een akkerbouwbedrijf en een veehouderijbedrijf onderzocht. Kleinschalige windenergie produceert met name in de winter elektriciteit, terwijl zonnepanelen juist voornamelijk in de zomer elektriciteit produceren. Wind- en zonneenergie vullen elkaar hierin aan, waardoor deze groen opgewekte energie sneller direct gebruikt kan worden op het moment dat het wordt opgewekt. Door het introduceren van kleinschalige windenergie wordt er naar verwachting meer hernieuwbaar opgewekte energie direct gebruikt en hoeft er (met name in de winterperioden) minder elektriciteit van het net ingekocht te worden. Een van de oplossingen voor netcongestie en verminderde afhankelijkheid van fluctuerende stroomprijzen.

In an experiment described by Elissen et al. (2019) on anaerobic digestion of black soldierfly (BSF, Hermetia illucens) larvae frass, the frass had been previously hygienised due to Dutch law. However, when the frass would stay on the same premises this hygienisation step may not be necessary. A synergistic effect of mixing insect frass with cattle slurry would provide a more positive business case for the insect farmer, since the frass becomes an interesting co-substrate for digesters, resulting in lower disposal costs or even benefits. To determine this synergistic effect, three substrates were tested in lab-scale mesophilic anaerobic digestion tests: Insect frass of BSF larvae grown on agricultural side-streams, either hygienised at 60 °C for 24h or non hygienised and cattle slurry. Also combinations of cattle slurry with insect frass were tested. Biogas production was determined by measuring gas pressure and analysing gas composition. No synergistic effect of adding insect frass to cattle slurry was found in this experiment, and neither differences between hygienised and non hygienised insect frass were found. In other words, adding insect frass to a cattle slurry digester will not lead to an increase in biogas production different from that expected based on adding up biogas productions of the single substrates. However, the partial replacement of cattle slurry with insect frass will increase the amount of biogas produced per digester volume with a factor 3.5 to 9 for respectively 10 % and 30 % replacement. Therefore, it is still interesting to add insect frass to a cattle slurry digester.

Deze korte notitie geeft de resultaten weer van de bespreking van een systeemanalyse gericht op fossielvrije mechanisatie in een workshop met betrokken stakeholders gehouden op 14 juli 2022.De focus lag op elektrische mechanisatie voor de lichtere werkzaamheden en op waterstof mechanisatie voor zwaardere langdurige werkzaamheden. Het doel van de workshop was de knelpunten en belemmeringen die tot stand gekomen waren op basis van individuele interviews te bespreken, aan te vullen en vervolgens te komen tot een prioritering. Tenslotte is in de workshop gewerkt aan een aanzet tot acties die volgens de deelnemers van belang waren om de geprioriteerde knelpunten weg te nemen en de kansen te verzilveren. Deze acties zijn in dit document verder uitgewerkt

This report is part of the WUR flagship project Circularity by Design, embedded within the strategic investment theme Connected Circularity. The project aims to apply (re)design principles to develop a sustainable agri-food system within the Amsterdam Metropolitan Region. The organic fraction of household waste in urban areas in the Netherlands is mostly not collected via a source-separation waste management system, but usually ends up within municipal residual solid waste fractions at central waste processing facilities. Source separation is seen as a way to lower financial and environmental burdens. The European revised Waste Framework Directive (2018/851/EU, §10) requires that all municipalities must plan and implement separate biowaste collection schemes (either via curb side or drop-off collection systems). Alternatively, municipalities can encourage citizens to dump their biowaste directly into home or community composting so it does not end up in the public collection systems. One means of doing so is decentralized (small-scale) worm composting, in which compost worms partly break down this waste and convert the remainder into worm compost and new worms/biomass. A prototype household worm composter was tested during 50 days on its ability to convert a defined food waste mixture (representative of what is wasted on average in Dutch households minus the unsuitable items such as sauces etc) into worm compost and new worm biomass. It was concluded that compost worms can be fed 72.6 % of the food waste produced in a typical Dutch household and almost 38 % of the food waste dry matter was broken down by the worms. The food waste contained ~72 % water. The compost samples had at least the same nitrogen use efficiencies as cattle dung slurry. Regarding heavy metals and pathogens, a food waste/worm compost sample from a similar composter complied with the standards for Keurcompost. Initially, conditions in the composter were beneficially for worm growth and waste processing but during the course of the experiment, there was too high moisture build-up. The design should be further improved to allow for more aeration and better passage of the processed food waste/worm compost out of the reactor. After solving these issues, the composter is useful for decentralized waste recycling/upcycling.

Plant biostimulants are products that have a growth-promoting and/or stress-reducing effect on agricultural crops by improving the condition or resistance of the plant. This allows e.g. better absorption of nutrients, reduced susceptibility to abiotic stresses such as drought, and better plant defences against biotic stresses such as fungal or bacterial attack. Extracts from various seaweed species may have such a biostimulating effect. In this project, published literature on research into the biostimulative effects of various seaweed species on crops and various (probable) candidate substances in seaweed that cause this effect was reviewed. Greenhouse and field experiments were then carried out to examine the effects of seaweed products produced by the French company Olmix on tomatoes, onions and potatoes affected by the fungus Phytophthora infestans (the cause of e.g. potato blight). The biostimulant effect of a self-produced extract of the seaweed species Saccharina latissima was tested in a small additional trial. Saccharina is a seaweed species that occurs naturally in the North Sea and is currently one of the most commonly used species in commercial cultivation of seaweed in European waters. Olmix's commercial seaweed product (Seamel) is produced from green and red seaweeds harvested in the wild off the Atlantic coast of France. In addition to seaweed, full-formulation Seamel, which is designed for use in crop production, contains various micro- and macro-elements added to enhance the effect of the seaweed extract. Field and greenhouse experiments on potatoes and tomatoes affected by P. infestans confirmed the biostimulating effect of the seaweed product, with crops sprayed with Seamel suffering significantly less late blight infection. A dose effect in f.e. the pot trial in tomato in 2018 was also observed, with a higher Seamel dose giving a stronger reduction or delay in infection in field experiments on potatoes in 2019 and 2021. In field experiments on onions in 2018 and 2019, no effect on yield or storage quality was observed, possibly because there was little natural fungal pressure in those years. In 2020, no significant effect of Seamel application was found for potatoes, because of a very early severe infection early in the season with hardly product with to lees product applied. In a greenhouse experiment in 2021, tomato plants were sprayed with Seamel and then actively infected with Phytophthora. In addition to a treatment with the complete Seamel product (full formulation), there was also a treatment with Seamel without additives and with its own extract of S. latissima. The full-formulation Seamel product had a positive effect on the infected tomato plants, but the product without additives had no significant effect. Biochemical analyses indicated that the latter product was probably made from a different seaweed batch, which may partly explain the lack of effect. Thus further studies are needed on different doses of the additives, alone and in combination with the seaweed in the full-formulation Seamel product, using one seaweed batch for all treatments. The extract of S. latissima without additives also had no reducing or delaying effect on Phytophthora infection. However, this treatment was only included once in the experiments, so more research is needed to enable firm conclusions to be drawn about its biostimulant effect. Use of seaweed products with a biostimulant effect offers promising opportunities, e.g. in organic agriculture, but more research is needed to identify the active ingredient(s) and assure high quality, guaranteed function and stability of such products made from wild-harvested seaweed.

Grassland is an important type of land use in Europe, covering a large area and providing ecosystem services such as carbon sequestration, enhancing biodiversity and protecting water. To boost the development of a bio-based economy and contribute to the EU’s goal of achieving net zero emissions by 2050, there is a need for business models that can be replicated in a variety of locations and contexts, with relatively low levels of investment, risk and technical sophistication. A wider range of rural entrepreneurs need to get involved in the emerging bio-based business sector, including farmers and forest owners (and their associations), policy makers, small rural businesses, and advisors. This is key to diversifying and revitalising the rural economies and creating quality jobs in rural areas.

In dit onderzoek zijn de mogelijkheden voor de agrarisch ondernemer onderzocht om in de bedrijfsvoering gebruik te maken van de H2Milkrun technologie. De H2Milkrun is een voertuig met een voorraad waterstof en een tankfaciliteit die bij bedrijven langs kan komen om de waterstofwerktuigen of opslagtanks of -bundels van die bedrijven te vullen. Er zijn twee opties waar een agrarische ondernemer een rol kan spelen. De eerste is om waterstof te produceren en dit te verkopen aan handelaren in waterstof die van de H2Milkrun technologie of andere transporttechnologie gebruik maken. De tweede optie is om waterstof die elders is geproduceerd te gebruiken in de eigen bedrijfsvoering om zo het gebruik van fossiele brandstoffen in de bedrijfsvoering te vervangen. Om deze opties te onderzoeken is een rekenmodel geconstrueerd. In het model wordt ervan uitgegaan dat er waterstof middels elektrolyse kan worden geproduceerd met hernieuwbare energiebronnen (zon en wind) en elektriciteit uit het net. De waterstof wordt onder druk tijdelijk opgeslagen op de locatie van de agrarisch ondernemer. Deze waterstof kan dan worden verkocht aan de H2Milkrun of een andere gashandelaar. Als de waterstof zelf wordt gebruikt in de bedrijfsvoering van de agrarisch ondernemer dan is er ook een waterstoftankstation nodig. In het model kan worden berekend hoeveel waterstof er nodig is om die diesel te vervangen afhankelijk van het bouwplan en de omvang van het bedrijf. Met het rekenmodel is de kostprijs berekend van de waterstof die kan worden geleverd aan de H2Milkrun. Veel van de beoogde te tanken voertuigen worden ingeschat met een tankinhoud van 20 kg waterstof. In het ontwerp van H2Milkrun is opgenomen dat er 259 kg waterstof kan worden vervoerd zodat diverse tankbeurten mogelijk zijn. Om de waterstof die de H2Milkrun meeneemt (259 kg) dagelijks te kunnen leveren is ca. 800 kW aan elektrolyser capaciteit nodig. Omdat veel netaansluitingen bij agrarisch ondernemers niet toereikend zijn voor 800 kW zijn er 4 elektrolysers van 200 kW doorgerekend, met 300 kWp PV, 75 kg opslag van waterstof op 500 bar en 7300 vollasturen per elektrolyser. Waterstof kan dan voor ca. €14,50/kg geproduceerd worden. Indien er 900 kWp PV panelen in plaats van 300 kWp PV panelen wordt gebruikt dan kan waterstof voor €12,60/kg geproduceerd worden. Om als agrarisch ondernemer zelf (groene) waterstof op te wekken zijn diverse componenten nodig zoals een elektrolyser, compressor, opslagfaciliteit, private tankinstallatie, hernieuwbare energie opwekkers. Indien een agrarisch ondernemer waterstof opwekt om zelf in de bedrijfsvoering te gebruiken dan worden er meerkosten per jaar gemaakt ten opzichte van gebruik van diesel. Hoewel dieselprijzen anno 2022 erg volatiel zijn is er in het onderzoek met €1,40/liter diesel gerekend. Er is ongeveer 0,15 kg H2 nodig om een liter diesel te vervangen. De met het model berekende kosten van de hoeveelheid waterstof equivalent aan een liter diesel liggen tussen de €1,91 (productiekosten van waterstof van €12,60/kg bij 200 kW elektrolyser en 900 kWp PV) en €3,33 (productiekosten van waterstof van €21,88/kg bij 19,2 kW elektrolyser en 350 kWp PV). In plaats van enkel waterstof voor het eigen gebruik te produceren om diesel te vervangen lijkt het met de huidige situatie meer haalbaar om de focus te leggen op het produceren van waterstof en dit te verkopen om daarmee de meerkosten te dekken die gemaakt worden ten opzichte van een conventionele diesel situatie. Het is afhankelijk van een specifiek bedrijf hoe de verkoopprijs van waterstof zal uitvallen, maar in de grootte van een 500 kW elektrolyser ligt de verkoopprijs rond de €13,50/kg. De berekeningen die in dit onderzoek zijn gedaan geven aan dat op dit moment het gebruik van eigen geproduceerde waterstof nog niet concurrerend is t.o.v. het gebruik van diesel. Dit kan veranderen bij verder stijgende dieselprijzen, bij kostprijsverlaging van de productie van waterstof (bijvoorbeeld doordat componenten goedkoper worden) of juist door het in de markt valoriseren van het het gebruik van eigen waterstof. In dit onderzoek is daarom ook een beknopt mogelijk toekomstscenario geschetst. Door prijsdalingen in verschillende componenten van het waterstofproductie systeem kan de productieprijs op €4,04/kg uitkomen in 2030. De kosten van de hoeveelheid waterstof equivalent aan een liter diesel ligt dan rond de €0,61.

This report describes five experiments to observe the growth of Dendrobaena veneta and Eisenia fetida on substrates originating from Avebe (potato starch and protein producer), Holland Malt (maltings) or others ( kitchen and garden wastes). The substrates include Tarra (Avebe), Secondary food industry Sludge (Holland Malt and Avebe), Barley Dust (Holland Malt), Germinated Barley (Holland Malt), Bokashi (Jansen Wijhe), Potato Peels (van Vulpen voeders), vegetable fruit and garden waste (van der Wal and Ogar), Apple pulp (van Vulpen voeders), Champost (Koolen champignons CNN) and Carrot and Pumpkin Peels (van Vulpen voeders). The compost worms’ growth was monitored for 4-6 weeks. The compost worms were able to convert the substrates into dry, light and powdery vermicompost high in nutrients and organic matter. The compost worms themselves increased in biomass and produced eggs. The protein content of the compost worms ranged between 57.1 and 68.3 % of DM, whereas the fat content ranged between 7.8 and 9.1% of DM. Tarra and Secondary food industry Sludge (Avebe) are suitable substrates for vermicomposting, when mixed with other substrates. Germinated Barley and Secondary Food Industry Sludge (Holland Malt) are less suitable for vermicomposting, due to substrate instability, even when mixed with other substrates. Additions of barley dust and chalk make the substrates’ texture and composition more suitable for the worms to feed on.

BSF larvae are highly efficient in converting all kinds of waste streams into larval protein richbiomass and organic matter. These properties make the BSF larvae perfect candidates for upgrading local waste streams into organic fertilizer in the pilot project ‘Kringlooplandbouw Veenkoloniën’ (circular agriculture Veenkoloniën). In this report different regional substrates, such as germinated barley, barley dust, secondary food industry sludge, primary sludge, pig manure solids, or combinations of these, were used to grow BSF larvae. The growth of the larvae was closely monitored. At the end of the 7 day experiment, the dry matter of the larvae, the growth rate per day, the conversion rate of the substrate and the ease of separating the frass from the larvae were determined. The BSF larvae grew on each substrate, but the highest growth rate (fresh weight) was observed when the larvae were grown on the substrate of germinated barley + barley dust. The observed growth rate was 10.0 mg/day of fresh weight respectively. The highest substrate conversion index (WRI) based on dry matter of 11.93 g/d was observed in primary sludge + germinated barley. Overall, these regional substrates show potential as a feed stream for the cultivation of BSF larvae.

Binnen de PPS Biobased opwaarderen van mest en digestaat is een eerste verkenning gedaan naar de economische haalbaarheid van een frass (insectenmest) vergister op het eigen terrein van een BSF (black soldier fly) larven producent. Er is uitgegaan van mono-mestvergisting met een gecombineerde warmte en energie opwekking via een WKK. Door deze opwek hoeft er minder aardgas en elektrain gekocht te worden. Deze winst wordt toegeschreven aan de installatie en heeft met de gebruikte waarden in dit model een terugverdientijd van 10.8 jaar, een installatie heeft normaliter een afschrijftermijn van 20 jaar, hierdoor wordt er iets meer dan 9 jaar winst gemaakt. De winst kan oplopen tot bijna €55.000 euro per jaar, zonder gebruikmaking van subsidies. Echter zijn een aantal gebruikte waarden nog onzeker en is het verstandig dit nader te onderzoeken.

As a growing demand for food and feed resources arises, alternative feed and food resources are sought to relieve pressures on the environment and existing food and feed resources. One alternative that has been given increasing interest is the application of black soldier fly (BSF) larvae to waste streams. In the context of the biobased economy, black soldier fly larvae convert waste streams into valuable insect biomass and organic fertilizer (frass). Applying black soldier fly larvae to manure has the potential to close loops within agri-food supply chains (Bortolini et al., 2020). This report explores the profitability potential of producing black soldier fly larvae on pig manure by individual pig farmers in the Netherlands. If profitable, producing black soldier fly larvae can diversify farmers’ income streams and help farmers to increase the circularity and sustainability of their business. However, while steps have been taken to broaden EU legislation with regards to black soldier fly larvae, it is currently not yet legal to produce and sell black soldier fly larvae raised on manure. Door een toenemende vraag naar voedsel- en voederproducten, wordt er gezocht naar alternatieve methoden om voedsel- en voedingsproducten te creëren. Om het milieu en de huidige voedings- en voederbronnen minder onder druk te zetten. Eén van de alternatieven waar toenemende interesse in is, is de applicatie van black soldier fly (BSF) larven (ook wel zwarte soldatenvlieg genoemd) op reststromen. In de context van de biogebaseerde economie, BSF larven zetten reststromen om in waardevolle insectenbiomassa en organische meststof (frass). Het toepassen van BSF larven op mest heeft de potentie om kringen in de landbouwkringloop te sluiten (Bortolini et al., 2020). Dit rapport onderzoekt het winstpotentieel van BSF larvenproductie op varkensmest op individueel boerderijniveau in Nederland. Als dit blijkt winstgevend te zijn, kunnen BSF larven bijdragen aan het diversifiëren van inkomensstromen en bijdragen aan meer circulariteit en duurzaamheid van het boerenbedrijf. Tot nu toe zijn er stappen genomen om de EU wetgeving te versoepelen met betrekking tot BSF larven. Toch is het op dit moment nog niet wettelijk toegestaan om BSF larven gekweekt op dierlijke mest te produceren en verkopen.

This report starts with a literature review on the topic. From literature it is known that fungi can selectively digest lignin, thereby releasing other components which may subsequently be easily converted into biogas during anaerobic digestion of normally recalcitrant compounds. In addition, several authors have found that commercial fungi can be grown on alternative substrates such as digestates. Four substrates (flax shives, solid fractions of ACRRES digestate, Greendal digestate and cow manure) were incubated with 10 fungi species (Coprinus comatus, Ceriporiopsis subvermispora, Pleurotus ostreatus, Pleurotus eryngii, Lentinula edodes, Hypholoma frowardii, Clitocyba dusenii, Bjerkandera adusta, Hypholoma fasciculare, Gymnopilus sapineus and Kuehneromyces mutabilis). Most combinations of substrates and fungi resulted in growth/colonization, except for all combinations with Greendal digestate, probably due to fungicidal compounds. The most successful combinations were those with P. eryngii, P. ostreatusand G. lucidumon ACRRES digestate, flax shives and cow manure, based on visual signs of fungal colonisation (air mycelium). In general, (average) biogas productions from the different substrates with or without fungal pre-treatmentdid not vary to a large extent and were relatively low (35-73 nm3biogas per ton product). Although in some graphs a slight positive effect on biogas treatment seemed to be taking place, statistical analysis showed that treatment of cow manure with P. ostreatus,P. eryngiiand G. lucidumdid not significantlyincrease the amount of biogas that could be collected. Fungal pretreatment of flax shives also did not lead to increased biogas production with P. eryngiiand G. lucidumand even to a significantly lower biogas production with P. ostreatus.

Door onze klimaatdoelstellingen is de vraag naar bio-ethanol steeds groter aan het worden. Er zijn steeds meer manieren en grondstoffen om bio-ethanol te produceren. Daarom is belangrijk om bij een nieuw productieconcept de mate van duurzaamheid te bepalen en die af te zetten tegen de standaard. Een bio-ethanol fabriek met een lagere broeikasgasuitstoot is niet alleen beter voor het milieu, maar kan ook financieel aantrekkelijker zijn wanneer bedrijven hun milieu impact willen verkleinen door anders in te kopen. Dit rapport heeft als vertrekpunt het direct processing van suikerbieten en wanneer er geen suikerbieten meer zijn snijmais fermentatie tot ethanol. De milieutechnische duurzaamheid van de productie van bio-ethanol bij dit gecombineerd gebruik van suikerbieten en snijmaiskorrels is via een modelstudie berekend. Het resultaat was een gemiddelde uitstoot van 23.29 gram CO2 equivalenten per MJ ethanol. Dit is lager dan de 23.9 gram CO2 equivalenten per MJ ethanol beschreven in de Renewable Energy Directive voor ethanolproductie op basis van suikerbieten. Daarnaast is gekeken hoe gevoelig de broeikasgas (BKG) emissie per MJ ethanol is voor veranderingen in een aantal parameters die in het model zijn opgenomen. De grootste veranderingen van de BKG uitstoot per MJ ethanol is gevonden bij de omzettingsefficiëntie van suiker naar ethanol tijdens de fermentatie. Maar ook de opbrengst van suikerbieten & snijmais per hectare en het suikergehalte van de suikerbieten hebben een substantieel effect. Daarnaast heeft het energieverbruik van het suikerbieten verwerkingsproces een groot effect. Al deze processen zijn te sturen doormiddel van teelt aanpassingen, eventueel veredeling van suikerbieten of gisten en proces optimalisatie. Naast de gevoeligheid van de uitstoot voor bepaalde veranderingen in parameters kwam als belangrijke observatie uit deze studie dat een kleinere fabriek milieutechnisch interessanter is. Daarnaast kan geconcludeerd worden dat ethanol uit snijmais milieutechnisch beter is dan ethanol uit suikerbieten.

For mushroom production usually a mixture of horse and chicken manure and straw is used. For every kg of mushrooms, 5 kgs of waste is produced, a total of 800.000 tonnes per year in the Netherlands. Processing options are often either costly or complex. As the champost contains high salt concentrations, washing results in a solid (less salty) fraction with better re-use options and a nutrient-rich liquid fraction. On the latter fraction growth of five species of commercially relevant micro algae was tested in small-scale well tests. In addition, the press water was also treated with H2O2/UV to reduce the brown colour of the solution. In the majority of the triplicate well tests, growth of three of the five common saltwater algae species (Nannochloropsis gaditana, Porphyridium purpureum, and Tetraselmis chuii) on press water fractions of spent mushroom waste (champost) was found to be comparable to or better than their growth on control media. Dunaliella salina growth was relatively low. Arthrospira platensis only grew on press water when treated with H2O2. Overall, the results indicate that washing of champost results in a mineral rich solution suitable for growth of several (saltwater) algae.
