Abstract

A partnership between Western science and Traditional Owners is working to restore seagrass meadows in Gathaagudu/Shark Bay, Western Australia. The seagrass was damaged by an extreme marine heatwave in 2010-11, impacting culturally significant species such as dugongs and green turtles. The project, which employed Malgana land and sea rangers, aimed to develop restoration methods using both Western science and Indigenous knowledge. The partnership recognized the deep ecological knowledge of Indigenous Peoples and provided opportunities for Indigenous rangers to connect with Country and gain industry qualifications. The project's success highlights the importance of combining diverse knowledge inputs to address environmental challenges and heal intergenerational trauma. [Extracted from the article]

12. The Mothers of the Plaza de Mayo: Altering Social and Political Spheres in the Fight for the Disappeared

Abstract

Argentina endured a violent and oppressive period from 1976-1983 known as the Dirty War. This paper shows how the kidnapping, torturing, and disappearance of more than 30,000 civilians mobilized a group of mothers, the Madres, to launch a collective resistance against the government. Their original goal was to combat the governments violence with love as they searched for their children who had disappeared and who had been unrightfully taken from them. These women put a face to each of the disappeared during the military dictatorship, challenged the political system, and unwittingly helped to change Argentine patriarchy by demanding to know the truth about their loved ones. The significance of their movement is best understood by examining gender roles in Argentine politics, the actions of the Catholic Church, and how these housewives became political actors.
