Abstract

In nuclear and atomic physics experiments, charged ion beams often need to be guided from the ion production to the experimental site. In the PUMA experiment, an ion source beamline was developed, which can be operated with up to \SI{5}{\kilo\electronvolt} beam energy at a base pressure of $10^{-9}$\,mbar or better. In this paper, a low-energy pulsed drift tube for beam energy modification, a hybrid einzel lens assembly for beam focusing and steering and an iris shutter assembly for separating beamline sections with different vacuum requirements are described with their design principles and performances., Comment: 22 pages, 13 figures

2. Production of hypernuclei from antiproton capture within a relativistic transport model

Abstract

Production yields of single-$\Lambda$ hypernuclei from simulated peripheral annihilations of antiprotons after capture on various target nuclei are reported. The initial annihilation process and the production of excited hypernuclei are estimated within the GiBUU transport framework, while their deexcitation process is treated with the ABLA++ code. The yield of excited hypernuclei range from $\sim$ 0.3% for $^{16}$O to $\sim$ 1.2% for $^{132}$Xe per annihilation, consistent with previous measurements at LEAR, CERN. The yield of specific ground state hypernuclei after deexcitation reaches up to a few 10$^{-4}$ per annihilation. The hypernuclei are produced in strangeness exchange reactions occuring between a nucleon of the target and the kaons originating from the annihilation in $\sim$ 80% of the cases, while the strangeness pair production in secondary pion-nucleon collision contributes to the remaining $\sim$ 20%. The simulations indicate that antiproton annihilations at rest on different nuclei could populate a wide range of so-far unexplored hypernuclei.

3. The Neutron-Rich Edge of the Nuclear Landscape. Experiment and Theory

Abstract

In this review, we describe the experimental facilities and methods which make it possible to produce and measure the properties of the extreme neutron rich nuclei. We then develop the theoretical framework that will accompany us along the review; the shell-model approach with large scale configuration interaction (mixing) SM-CI, with special emphasis in the competition between the spherical mean field and the nuclear correlations (mainly pairing and quadrupole-quadrupole). The symmetry properties of the latter are treated in detail as they will show to be of great heuristic value. We explore in detail the Islands of Inversion (IoI) at N=20 and N=28. We make a side excursion into the heavier Calcium and Potassium isotopes, to discuss current issues on shell evolution and new magic numbers far from stability. We visit the N=40 Island of Inversion. We discuss the doubly magic nucleus 78Ni, its shape coexistence and the prospect of a new IoI at N=50 below Z=28. We examine the N=70 and N=82 neutron closures approaching the neutron drip line.

Abstract

19 pags., 16 figs., 8 tabs., We present the design, prototype developments and test results of the new time-of-flight detector (ToFD) which is part of the R3B experimental setup at GSI and FAIR, Darmstadt, Germany. The ToFD detector is able to detect heavy-ion residues of all charges at relativistic energies with a relative energy precision σΔE/ ΔE of up to 1% and a time precision of up to 14 ps (sigma). Together with an elaborate particle-tracking system, the full identification of relativistic ions from hydrogen up to uranium in mass and nuclear charge is possible., This work received support from BMBF (05P19RFFN1, 05P15RDFN1, 05P19RDFN1) and HIC for FAIR. Through this study we propose to use sub-Coulomb transfer to investigate the one-neutron halo phenomenon within nuclear excited states since this method could naturally guarantee the peripherality of the transfer. Zero-range ADWA calculations are performed with the final nucleus bound under different conditions. Abstract

A Coulomb-excitation experiment to study electromagnetic properties of 42Ca was performed using a 170-MeV calcium beam from the TANDEM XPU facility at INFN Laboratori Nazionali di Legnaro. γ rays from excited states in 42Ca were measured with the AGATA spectrometer. The magnitudes and relative signs of ten E2 matrix elements coupling six low-lying states in 42Ca, including the diagonal E2 matrix elements of 2+ 1 and 2+ 2 states, were determined using the least-squares code GOSIA. The obtained set of reduced E2 matrix elements was analyzed using the quadrupole sum rule method and yielded overall quadrupole deformation for 0+ 1,2 and 2+ 1,2 states, as well as triaxiality for 0+ 1,2 states, establishing the coexistence of a weakly deformed ground-state band and highly deformed slightly triaxial sideband in 42Ca. The experimental results were compared with the state-of-the-art large-scale shell-model and beyond-mean-field calculations, which reproduce well the general picture of shape coexistence in 42Ca.

Abstract

Within the SEASTAR project at RIKEN-RIBF, 66Cr and 70,72Fe have been produced via protonknockout reactions, and their first excited 2+ and 4+ states have been discovered. The combination of the liquid-hydrogen target and TPC system MINOS has been used in combination with the DALI2 detector array for the first time. A 345 MeV/u 238U beam with a mean intensity of about 12 pnA impinged on a Be target. Fission fragments were separated and identified using the BigRIPS spectrograph, and reaction products were analyzed using the ZeroDegree spectrograph. A plateau of excitation energies, with a small change in the systematic trends past N = 44, reveals an extension of the N = 40 region of collectivity toward N = 50. Hence, the isotopes of interest are located within the N = 40 island of inversion. An interpretation of the observed trends is offered through large scale shell model calculations.

46. γ-spectroscopic determination of mean lifetimes and magnetic moments of excited nuclear states

Abstract

The mean lifetime of an excited nuclear state is an important observable directly related to the transition probability. Information on the mean lifetimes of nuclear excited states can give insight into the evolution of the nuclear shape as a function of nucleon number. For this work, mean lifetimes of the rare-earth isotopes 174,176,178,180Hf and 152Gd have been measured. The mean lifetimes have been determined with the fast-timing technique, already introduced in the 1950s, but applicable to a wider range of excited nuclear states, due to rapid progress in the development of new scintillation detectors in the last two decades. Both experiments have been performed at the FN Tandem accelerator of the IFIN-HH with the ROSPHERE detector array. A possible new signature for the known quantum phase transition at N=90 has been established with the results from the 152Gd experiment and the correlation to other observables, such as the E0 transition strength, has been investigated. The evolution of collectivity and the rotational structure of the hafnium isotopes have been investigated and a maximum of the collectivity at N=100 has been identified. In total 13 mean lifetimes have been determined for the 174,176,178,180Hf isotopes. The nuclear magnetic dipole moment is an important indicator of the composition of the proton neutron wave function, and therefore the single particle properties of the nuclear state. The second part of this thesis presents the results from a g-factor measurement of the 2+1 state of 18O with the recently developed ECR-TDRIV technique. The method is in particular foreseen for the application to radioactive ion beams, but has to be tested with stable beams. The analysis procedure of the 18O experiment is outlined and the results for the g factor are compared to previous measurements and shell model calculations.
