How do age and the acquisition of independent walking relate to changes in infants' everyday experiences? We used a novel ecological momentary assessment (EMA) method to gather caregiver reports of infants' restraint, body position, and object holding via text messages sparsely sampled across multiple days of home life at 10, 11, 12, and 13 months of age. Using data from over 4,000 EMA samples from N = 62 infants recruited from across the United States and sampled longitudinally, we measured changes in the base rates of different activities in daily life. With age, infants spent more time unrestrained. With the onset of walking, infants spent less time sitting and prone and more time upright. Although rates of object holding did not change with age or walking ability, we found that infants who can walk hold objects more often in an upright position compared with nonwalkers. We discuss how accurately measuring changes in lived experiences serves to constrain theories about developmental mechanisms. (PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2024 APA, all rights reserved).

How do people use objects and gestures to shape scientific argumentation? This paper engages the concept of "entanglement" as a heuristic for considering the potentials and constraints that gestures and materials create for interactants. Drawing on video recorded data from an academic-year-long linguistic ethnography of a high school science classroom in southern Arizona, USA, I examine the entanglement of discourse, bodies, and objects in one act sequence to reveal differences in the situated practices of high school students as opposed to professional scientists. The analysis reveals that objects and gestures allow scientific novices to engage in collaborative sense-making as they transform discourse and are transformed in discourse. At the same time, the flexibility and contingency of objects and gestures can be problematic for novices dealing with ambiguous understandings of natural phenomena, leading to interpretations that may or may not correspond to expert understandings. Reckoning with materiality in science argumentation must account for the limitations of objects and bodies as forms of evidence as well as their potential to afford forms of agency. Humans adopt non-linguistic signals, from smoke signals to Morse code, to communicate. This communicative flexibility emerges early: embedding novel sine-wave tones in a social, communicative exchange permits 6-month-olds to imbue them with communicative status, and to use them in subsequent learning. Here, to specify the mechanism(s) that undergird this capacity, we introduced infants to a novel signal—sine-wave tone sequences—in brief videotaped vignettes with non-human agents, systematically manipulating the socio-communicative cues in each vignette. Next, we asked whether infants interpreted new tone sequences as communicative in a fundamental cognitive task: object categorization. Infants successfully interpreted tones as communicative if they were produced in dialogues with one agent speaking (Study 1) or both agents producing tones (Study 2), or in monologues involving only a single agent (Study 3). What was essential was cross-modal temporal synchrony between an agent's movements and the tones: when this synchrony was disrupted (Study 4), infants failed in the subsequent task. This synchrony, we propose, licensed an inference that the tones, generated by an agent, were candidate communicative signals. Infants' early capacity to use synchrony to identify new communicative signals and recruit them in subsequent learning has implications for theory and for interventions to support infants facing communicative challenges. The article traces and examines the history of some of the specimens used in teaching in Swedish secondary grammar schools from the mid-nineteenth century up until today. Previous research has focused on empirical analyses of teaching materials and school collections, while this paper adds new knowledge to the history of education using an object-biographic approach. Whilst focusing on the history of two distinct specimens, a bird and a small collection of butterflies, and how these were circulated and recontextualised, the paper raises wider questions about how different actors are involved as meanings and knowledge content change. Through the object-biographic approach, we show that the use of natural history objects was multifaceted and had several purposes at the same time, ranging from research to education to providing status or being a hobby. The use of natural history specimens changed with reforms of the Swedish educational system. New teaching materials and new educational ideals were developed, and from 1960 onwards the importance of these objects decreased. This article describes the possibilities of art workshops which have been conducted in Fukushima Prefecture that were affected by the earthquake, tsunami, and nuclear power plant accident on March 11, 2011. In coastal areas, many people experienced unexpected domestic migrations/relocations and unwelcome changes in their lives due to the disaster, moving multiple times and living in a state akin to drifting. In these workshops, participants recalled their history and context, created artwork as their navigational chart of life while rebraiding individual narratives with images, memories, and recollections that associated with objects as a part of hyperobjects of tsunami and nuclear disasters. For their complicated situation after the disaster, the workshops provided the opportunities to negotiate with objects as non-human things which have a longer lifespan than humans. It became the activities supporting peoples who lost the continuity of their lives with their hometown. These recovery and support programs through art workshops will be an ecosophic approach based on non-discursive, aesthetic, and ethic means to change the human-centric dominant paradigm. This article explores bells, and objects in general, from a philosophical perspective. More specifically, it explores the way objects orient our being, but only partially as aspects of things always remain withdrawn from access. Through an exploration of the elemental forms of bells, this article positions object exploration as a wholly spiritual and pleasurable undertaking. No matter how much we delve into something there will always be unknowable aspects to a thing. Our experience of things is an intensely metaphysical experience that only living in the world (through) time can elucidate. This article examines the exchange of objects between family members by studying the lists of items detailed in the Terry family letters, dated from 1842 to 1852 and sent between British empire locations. It argues that these objects were crucial to creating and maintaining family ties across the empire, primarily through their emotional value. Economic and social considerations, though present, cannot account for the full extent of the objects exchanged. They likewise do not explain the repeating lists of items, themselves bearing no little cost of postage. Yet both objects and lists reinforced routes of connectivity by emotional signalling, such as demonstrating parental care or assuaging guilt. Building on both anthropological and historical insight, this study shows how the act of sending the objects constituted the strongest signal, as it placed the effort to stay in touch centre stage. This effort was best displayed by sending excessive objects, objects with little social or economic benefit that nonetheless required ingenuity in sending. Concentrating on the Terry family case study highlights the significant role of objects in creating family across distance, while providing a paradigm for an analysis of similar material exchanges. In Australia, as elsewhere, there is consensus that new and more effective ways of responding to young people who commit crimes need to be identified and, when available, implemented and evaluated. In this paper we review youth justice legislation across each Australian jurisdiction and consider how it provides the mandate for service delivery. We contextualise this with an account of historical variations in how the seemingly competing goals of welfare and justice have been balanced. This is followed by an overview of contemporary understandings of child development and human rights which are increasingly recognised as both relevant and important to the way in which the community works with justice-involved children and young people. The analysis illustrates how youth justice agencies are still expected to achieve multiple and, at times, conflicting legislated objectives which results in a lack of coherence in policy and practice. This serves only to limit effectiveness. We conclude that legislative reform will be necessary to realise any new vision for youth justice, especially if one of the overarching purposes is to protect vulnerable children. Most Event Related Potential studies investigating the time course of visual processing have focused mainly on the N170 component. Stimulus orientation affects the N170 amplitude for faces but not for objects, a finding interpreted as reflecting holistic/configural processing for faces and featural processing for objects. Furthermore, while recent studies suggest where on the face people fixate impacts the N170, fixation location effects have not been investigated in objects. A data-driven mass univariate analysis (all time points and electrodes) was used to investigate the time course of inversion and fixation location effects on the neural processing of faces and houses. Strong and widespread orientation effects were found for both faces and houses, from 100-350ms post-stimulus onset, including P1 and N170 components, and later, a finding arguing against a lack of holistic processing for houses. While no clear fixation effect was found for houses, fixation location strongly impacted face processing early, reflecting retinotopic mapping around the C2 and P1 components, and during the N170-P2 interval. Face inversion effects were also largest for nasion fixation around 120ms. The results support the view that facial feature integration (1) depends on which feature is being fixated and where the other features are situated in the visual field, (2) occurs maximally during the P1-N170 interval when fixation is on the nasion and (3) continues past 200ms, suggesting the N170 peak, where weak effects were found, might be an inflexion point between processes rather than the end of a feature integration into a whole process. In this article we will study, on the one hand, the content of female education in the subjects of Home Economics, Domestic Sciences, Labor and Childcare that were taught in national establishments at the primary level and at the middle level such as Normal Schools and Lyceums for Young Girls, based on the analysis of the programs and textbooks. On the other hand, we will analyze how the practical classes were given and what objects were necessary for their implementation, observing testimonies of teachers, the magazine El Monitor and institutional videos. This paper explores the concept of drives as basic motivational neurobiological structures determining the organization of psychic life. I express my agreement with Mark Solms' radical reformulation of the general principles organizing human behaviour at the neurobiological and psychodynamic levels, his combination of Friston's computational information theory and Panksepp's affect systems. I agree with him that the affect systems described by Panksepp constitute the primary drives and that the conflicts between affect systems are the origin of unconscious intrapsychic conflict. I disagree with Solms in my proposition that, while the original unconscious conflicts indeed reflect conflicts between antagonistic affects, I believe that the integration of affect systems into internalized object relations determines a significant motivational shift: now unconscious conflicts are between complex organization of idealized and persecutory object relations at oedipal and preoedipal levels, and no longer between affect systems themselves. At the various developmental levels, the integrated fusion of affective components of these conflicts in effect evolves into libido and aggression as supraordinate motivational systems, but they no longer can be considered biological drives. Many languages have words that denote a human body part and an object, for example, hand, which refers to a part of a person and a watch. As of yet, there is no systematic study on the distribution of these shared names, i.e., colexifications, between two concrete semantic domains in a variety of languages. Here, I present a study that investigates colexifications between body and object concepts, i.e., body-object colexifications. By using a newly established workflow, colexifications are automatically extracted based on a seed list containing 134 body concepts and 650 object concepts. The analysis focuses on the frequency, distribution, cognitive relations, and coincidental cases of 78 body-object colexifications occurring across 396 language varieties. The results show that some body-object colexifications are widespread, but most occur in a small number of language varieties. By creating a network structure to examine individual relations and additionally comparing ratings of visual and haptic perception across concepts, the study indicates that the similarity of visual perception plays a central role in the emergence of body-object colexifications. This paper combines insights drawn from the fields of routine dynamics (RD) and science and technology studies (STS) to analyse the enactment of objects in an emerging organizational routine. I zoom in on a specific case that was part of a two-year ethnographic study shadowing a literacy coach, who facilitates professional development regarding literacy in school. Using the concept of ‘fluid technologies’, developed by STS scholars Marianne de Laet and Annemarie Mol (2000), enables me to analyse objects, such as a folder, PowerPoints, and models, to see how a routine develops and varies over time and place while remaining recognizable (Feldman et al. 2021a). The emerging routine renders visible various practices and patterns, although similarities come in varying shades, gradients, and mixtures. The literacy coach’s facilitating role is of great importance, enacting objects and guiding the flows and processes of objects in the emerging routine. The article adds to the existing research literature on routine dynamics, highlighting the relevance of theories of fluid technologies when studying objects in emerging organizational routines. Furthermore, conceptualizing momentarily stabilization as routines is significant to the STS field to understand more on work and organization.

Some uses in literary texts based on the association of concrete objects with abstract concepts are important in terms of reflecting the poet's imaginary world. Neverttheless, the poet's ability to provide semantic integrity depends on the necessity of a literary power and the mastery in using the language. The use of objects is one of literary devices that give strength to the poetry of Şeyh Galip Sufi Mathnawi and the last great representative of classical Turkish poetry. In this study were classified the objects from the text of Şeyh Galip's Hüsn ü Aşk Mathnawi. In the text used concrete objects, objects used in daily life, classifying abstract as objects used metaphorically, objects used as simile elements, and used as metaphor elements, it has been tried to reveal what the purpose of the objects are in the couplets, their contribution to the meaning and fictional structure of the poem, and the contribution of the objects to the poem. In Şeyh Galip's eyes, some abstract concepts were expressed in concrete concepts and made more understandable in people's mind. In this commentary, I describe music as a 'hyperobject' – an object so massive, multi‐dimensional and vastly distributed in space and time, that it exceeds full apprehension and quantification and ultimately traditional understandings of what a thing is. I draw examples from my own experiences and from the special issue articles to convey how music possesses the five core properties of a hyperobject; being viscous, molten, non‐local, phased and interobjective. Safe Micro Aerial Vehicle (MAV) navigation requires detecting and avoiding obstacles. For safe MAV navigation, expansion‐based algorithms are effective for detecting obstacles. However, accurate and real‐time obstacle detection is a fundamental challenge. Some traditional methods focus on extracting geometric features from images and applying geometric constraints to identify potential obstacles. Others may leverage machine learning algorithms for object detection and classification, using features such as texture, shape, and context to distinguish obstacles from background clutter. The choice of approach depends on factors such as the specific requirements of the application, the complexity of the scene, and the available computational resources. Since obstacles, in reality, take the form of objects (e.g., persons, walls, pillars, trees, automobiles, and other structures), it is preferable to represent them according to human comprehension and as objects. Therefore, the objective of this study is to reflect on the previous research and address the issues mentioned above by extracting objects from the fisheye image using a panoptic deep‐learning network. The extracted object regions are, then, used to identify obstacles with a novel area‐based expansion rate we developed in a previous study. We compared the accuracy of obstacle detection in our proposed method to the existing method when moving forward and to the right; thus, we improved it between 10% and 18%, respectively. In addition, compared with the existing method, and due to replacing a single object with multiple regions, obstacle‐detection runtime for forward and right direction is 15.71 and 25.5 times faster, respectively, and the required match points have decreased by 49% and 55%. Drawing on our recent collaborative experience in teaching an intermediate-level museum studies course in Fall 2023, this reflective essay aims to demonstrate how faculty and librarians can employ object-centered research to guide students in their exploring and understanding of the extractive practices associated with imperialism and colonialism that have shaped museum and library collections. We specifically focus on the research and curatorial practices that culminated in an end-of-semester exhibit, showcased in both physical and digital formats. Through this exhibit, our student-curators brought to light the process of removing artifacts from their original material and political contexts and their subsequent integration into our collections. Moreover, they critically examined how classification and organization practices and, in certain instances, digitization processes in libraries, can either continue to veil or reveal the history of violence.

The abolition of slavery in the French colonies generates a new flow of migration from Asia. Several Indian migrants reach the coasts of the Antilles as contract laborers in the sugarcane fields. In the archipelago they suffer from the violence of European settlers who, through the imposition of Christian worship and the destruction of traditional elements of Indian culture, undertake a process of annihilating a centuries-old identity. However, the population manages to resist, reinventing itself, through the confluence of syncretistic elements.

In this article, a standalone executable software molVisual3D, for 3D visualization of molecules was developed. It uses the XYZ file of a molecule to generate its 3D graphics. Some parameters can be specified by the user. In the generated 3D graphics window, the user can right- or left-click mouse to zoom in or zoom out the 3D graphics, or mouse-drag the graphics to rotate the 3D graphics, or slide scrollbar to vertically or horizontally translate the 3D graphics. The 3D graphics can be saved into an image file (in BMP format). Both molVisual3D and demonstration data files were given.

Can a fact constituted by an object A be grounded exclusively in facts which do not entail A as a constituent? I call this the problem of extrinsic grounding. Prima facie, it seems that there are such cases. In this paper I provide a negative answer to this question. Firstly, I show why this is an important problem. Secondly, I will argue that all apparent cases of extrinsic grounding are merely apparent. My solution is based on the notion of the ‘impure object’. In my view, to each apparent case of extrinsic grounding there is an underlying perspicuous intrinsic grounding link, in which the object of the grounded fact is constituted by an impure object. In the last section, I argue that my solution also works in the ‘hard case’ of grounding the existence of ordinary objects. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Based on 13 months of empirical field research, this article examines the current nature of property crime in South Africa, and methods of policing the problem. With an analytical focus on the objects that commonly get stolen, it argues that South African authorities rely on an outdated market reduction approach (MRA), doing little to reduce present property crime levels. Instead of thieves selling a wide array of stolen goods for cash, the data show that thieves and fences have become increasingly specialised regarding which objects they steal and smuggle for transnational markets. To prevent victimisation by these specialised actors, potential victims devise their own crime prevention tactics, especially of not possessing or hiding desirable objects. These tactics hold clues for authorities on how to expand the MRA to improve their policing of property crime and increase the security of residents. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In my paper I consider the movement of objects in „space", taking into account the idea of preserving and accumulation of change with time. I compare this view with Newton, Leibniz and Einstein's ideas of movement, space and time. To illustrate this, I represent the movement of two objects along a straight line, as well as some dependences connected to it. I also pose questions as "Why and how the things exist?" in relation to characteristics like discernibility, equality, and change. I also address faith as an integral part of science. This article considers the material culture of charity and philanthropy, arguing that objects and artifacts related to charitable causes and campaigns are important sources for research and teaching. Recent scholarship explores the challenges faced in preserving and enabling access to records of charitable organizations but rarely examines material objects in this context. Yet charity objects can be engaging, stimulating, and insightful when used with both public audiences and students. This article offers an outline of object-based learning (OBL) in higher education. It then explores how teaching the history of charity and philanthropy through objects requires pedagogical innovations beyond the museum-based approaches which tend to dominate much OBL practice and suggests more portable, accessible, and affordable solutions. On the second level of the Olympic Museum in Switzerland lives a handheld fan from the 1924 Paris Olympics featuring five sportswomen. The museum describes the fan as a souvenir from the Games and an advertisement for a French perfume company. However, this fan is much more than an advertisement or souvenir. Drawing upon new materialist theory, which envisions objects as lively, this article looks toward the ways the fan was productive in developing ideas around gender at the Olympics. Using an object biography, this research explores how the fan contributed to the New Woman femininity of the 1920s and currently produces a narrative of the International Olympic Committee as being a gender progressive organization. In so doing, it explores how an object that is often overlooked by many at the museum plays a powerful role in understandings of gender across the history of the Games. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Shadows, as all other objects that surround us, are incorporated into the body and extend the body mediating perceptual information. The current study investigates the hypothesis according to which the perception of object shadows would predict the perception of body shadows. 38 participants (19 males and 19 females) aged 23 years on average were immersed into a virtual reality environment and instructed to perceive and indicate the coincidence or non coincidence between the movement of a ball shadow with regard to ball movement on the one hand, and between their body shadow and their body position in space on the other. Their brain activity was recording via a 32-channel EEG system, in which beta (13.5-30 Hz) oscillations were analyzed. A series of Multiple Regression Analysis (MRA) revealed that the beta dynamic oscillations patterns of the bilateral occipito-parieto-frontal pathway associated with the perception of ball shadow appeared to be a significant predictor of the increase in beta oscillations across frontal areas related to the body shadow perception and the decrease in beta oscillations across frontal areas connected to the decision making of the body shadow. Taken together, the findings suggest that inferential thinking ability relative to body shadow would be reliably predicted from object shadows and that the bilateral beta oscillatory modulations would be indicative of the formation of predictive neural frontal assemblies, which encode and infer body shadow neural representation, that is, a substitution of the physical body. Agglomerative hierarchical clustering methods are the most popular type of hierarchical clustering used to group objects in clusters based on their similarity. The methods uses a bottom-up approach and it starts clustering by treating the individual data points as a single cluster, then it is merged continuously based on similarity until it forms one big cluster containing all objects. In this paper, we reviewed eight agglomerative hierarchical clustering methods namely: single linkage method, complete linkage method, average linkage method, weighted group average method, centroid method, median method, Ward's method and the flexible beta method; we also discussed measures of similarity and dissimilarity using quantitative data as our reference point. The 2009 policy of the Indonesian football league management, mandating that football clubs competing in the 2009-2010 Indonesian Super League must be legal entities, resulted in the transformation of several clubs that maintained amateur status. Amateur associations, funded through the regional budget regulated by the Ministry of Home Affairs Regulation No. 13 of 2006, revised to Ministry of Home Affairs Regulation No. 59 of 2007, underwent this transition. One notable example of an amateur association evolving into a professional club is Persib Bandung, which established a legal entity in the form of a Limited Liability Company (PT) known as PT Persib Bandung Bermartabat (PT PBB). A professional measure taken by PT PBB involved entering into contracts with individual players. One clause stipulated in these contracts pertained to image rights, the management of which was held by PT PBB, with players entitled to royalties for the use of their image rights. This research examines and analyzes image rights from the perspective of Intellectual Property Rights as a component of property law within the civil law concept. The study utilizes a qualitative analysis with a normative legal approach. The research concludes that the image rights referred to in the contracts of Persib Bandung players constitute objects eligible for the protection of intellectual property rights, specifically copyright and trademark rights.

The point of departure for this article is the small wooden chest that the Countess of Empúries, Maria Álvarez de Xèrica (c. 1310-1374), commissioned to hold the instructions for the annual commemorations of her death. I address the wills, tomb, death, funeral rites, and anniversary celebrations of the countess as a grand performance, a work deployed over space and time. In addition, I focus on the agency of the memory containers: chests, tomb, boxes. The aim of this exploration of the acts, desires, objects, and people that made up this performance is to understand them not only in and of themselves, but as parts of a network. The study reveals the potential of such a network to construct memory by forging a constellation of nodes of objects but also of family ties, and political and social consciousness. For any criminal prosecution officer, the crime scene investigation is one of the most important criminal prosecution actions and in most cases, it is also the starting point of investigations. Here, the traces left by the offender can be discovered, they can be visible or less visible, left due to negligence, haste, fear or on purpose. The traces, waiting to be discovered, form a significant part of the object of the forensic investigation. Being created in the environment through the actions of those involved in the commission of the offense, the traces contain a lot of information, including individual features of the perpetrator, and in turn are waiting to be discovered for the identification of the last. A hasty decision, a wrong step is able to compromise the deciphering of the crime scene and consequently the identification of the perpetrator. There is no such thing as a perfect crime, and in this initial work, the experience and knowledge of the criminal prosecution officer are essential to help him search, have a broad view and best understand the information he has already obtained. How does material culture shape contentious politics? Things, we argue, influence political contention in ways that are reducible neither to struggles over meaning nor to the thingly aspect of things. The article combines pragmatic semiotics with insights on ritual practice and collective experience. By bringing together three often separate literatures – contentious politics, material culture, and affect – we suggest a thicker understanding of agency. Agency, this article contends, is distributed between primary human actors and objects, which exercise a degree of secondary agency. Our aim is to explore how affect is stored in and channelled through seemingly ordinary objects. Political actors use these affectively charged symbol-index-icons in pursuit of various objectives; specifically, material things are shown to enable and constrain episodes of contention. As a result, our understanding of contentious politics involves not only ideas, texts, and opportunity structures but also the objects that help make social and political change possible. Australian collecting institutions and heritage agencies have been returning Ancestral Remains and secret-sacred objects to Australian First Nations communities for over 30 years. In recent years, calls for repatriation have expanded to include what have often been called 'secular' objects. This paper considers the varying levels of sacredness potentially inherent in the types of 'traditional' secular objects that are characteristic of many museum collections. In museum collection management typologies, objects are often divided into discrete categories of secular, ceremonial and sacred. Events are things like explosions, floods, weddings or births. Both in common-sense and scientific usage, events are spatially and temporally bounded doings or happenings that involve activity and change. Philosophical theories of events have not, generally speaking, honored this feature of events. Probably the most widely discussed account, due to Jaegwon Kim, holds that events are exemplifications of properties at times. But properties are things like temperature, shape, color, solidity or fragility; they are not doings or happenings, but havings. In this paper I defend an account which takes seriously the distinction between doings and havings, which I call the object-activity theory of events. Background: In this study, objects are used as a representation of relational wellbeing to help young refugees living in Norway, Scotland, and Finland to talk about important persons who make them feel well. At the time of this research, there is no known study that uses objects to facilitate narratives of how young refugees and members of their social networks generate relational wellbeing. Methods: Using a qualitative approach, young refugees participated in individual interviews about the objects they brought to art workshops to understand their experiences, feelings, and acts of wellbeing. Results: Treating each object as unique to the owner was powerful in revealing how relational wellbeing is experienced and expressed. There were overlaps in experiences and expressions of wellbeing, hence our themes of discussion: overlaps between old and new social ties; between time and space; and between the three constructs of relational wellbeing. Old ties were not forgotten; instead, they evolved to a different form, supporting young refugees from a distance, while new ties contributed to what is needed in their present and at their current age. Experiences of relational wellbeing transcended time and space between their disrupted places of origin, their experiences on the journey, and settling in their new countries. The constructs of relational wellbeing—feeling good, being connected, and having enough—were inseparable in the participants' experiences. Conclusions: We conclude that these overlaps have implications for a relational wellbeing approach in theory and practice. The results leave a challenge for both researchers and practitioners to develop complex research and intervention methods that can capture these tapestries of young refugees' experiences of relational wellbeing.
