Abstract

Frequency Containment Reserves might be insufficient to provide an appropriate response in the presence of large disturbances and low inertia scenarios. As a solution, this work assesses the supplementary droop frequency-based Emergency Power Control (EPC) from HVDC interconnections, applied in the detailed Nordic Power System model. EPC distribution and factors that determine the EPC performance of an HVDC link are the focus of interest. The main criteria are the maximum Instantaneous Frequency Deviation and used EPC power. The presented methodology is motivated based on the theoretical observation concerning linearized system representation. However, the assessed and proposed properties of interest, such as provided EPC active and reactive power, their ratio, and energy of total loads and losses in the system due to the EPC, concern highly nonlinear system behavior. Abstract

A large share of renewable energy sources integrated into the national grids and an increased interconnection capacity with asynchronous networks, are the main contributors in reducing the kinetic energy storage in the Nordic Power System. Challenges arise to operate system after a loss of generation and to minimize the offshore systems interaction with onshore grids. To assess the associated challenges, a novel dynamic model was developed under the phasor approximation to represent the future Northern European Power System, including High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) links and future offshore energy islands in the North Sea. First, the future frequency response is provided for two large disturbances to highlight the benefit of the developed model and point out potential future frequency issues. Consequently, further actions are investigated to better utilize the existing frequency containment reserves or to partially replace them using emergency droop-based power control of HVDC links. Lastly, the offshore grid interaction and frequency support to the Nordic network is investigated, and the dynamic response is compared for zero- and low-inertia designs of the offshore energy islands. The simulations were performed using industrial software, and the associated material is made publicly available.

6. Market Integration of HVDC Lines: Cost Savings from Loss Allocation and Redispatching

Abstract

In the Nordic region, many interconnectors are formed by HVDC links, as Scandinavia, Continental Europe and the Baltic region are non-synchronous AC systems. This paper presents two cost benefit analyses on the utilization of HVDC interconnectors in the Nordic countries: in the first we investigate the utilization of HVDC interconnectors for reserve procurement and, in the second, we assess the implementation of implicit grid losses on HVDC interconnectors in the day-ahead market. The first analysis is motivated by real events in 2018 where the inertia of the Nordic system dropped below a critical level and the most critical generating unit, a nuclear power plant in Sweden, was redispatched to guarantee the security of the system. In order to guarantee system security while reducing the costs of preventive actions, in summer 2020 new frequency products were introduced in the Nordic system: the Fast Frequency Reserves (FFR). HVDC lines, however, can perform similar tasks at lower costs. In our analysis, we are, thus, investigating the cost savings of using HVDC lines for frequency support using their Emergency Power Control (EPC) functionality, instead of redispatching or FFR. The second analysis is based on the proposition of Nordic Transmission System Operators (TSOs) to introduce linear HVDC loss factors in the market clearing. With our analysis, we show that linear loss factors can unfairly penalize one HVDC line over the other, and this can reduce social benefits and jeopardize revenues of merchant HVDC lines. In this regard, we propose piecewise-linear loss factors: a simple-to-implement but highly-effective solution. Moreover, we demonstrate how the introduction of HVDC loss factors is a partial solution, since it disproportionally increases the AC losses. 7. Influence of Sensor Feedback Limitations on Power Oscillation Damping and Transient Stability

Abstract

Fundamental sensor feedback limitations for improving rotor angle stability using local frequency or phase angle measurement are derived. Using a two-machine power system model, it is shown that improved damping of inter-area oscillations must come at the cost of reduced transient stability margins, regardless of the control design method. The control limitations stem from that the excitation of an inter-area mode by external disturbances cannot be estimated with certainty using local frequency information. The results are validated on a modified Kundur four-machine two-area test system where the active power is modulated on an embedded high-voltage dc link. Damping control using local phase angle measurements, unavoidably leads to an increased rotor angle deviation following certain load disturbances. For a highly stressed system, it is shown that this may lead to transient instability. Abstract

Aims Establishing a diagnosis of inflammatory cardiomyopathy (iCMP) by non‐invasive means remains challenging despite advances in cardiac magnetic resonance imaging. Previous studies suggested the involvement of microRNAs in the pathogenesis of iCMP. We examined the association of a predefined set of circulatory microRNAs with clinical characteristics of iCMP and evaluated their diagnostic performance in suspected iCMP. Methods and results Eighty‐nine patients with clinical suspicion of iCMP were included in the analysis. All patients underwent cardiac catheterization with left ventricular endomyocardial biopsy, echocardiography, and cardiac magnetic resonance imaging applying the Lake Louise criteria (LLC). Plasma levels of miR‐21, miR‐126, miR‐133a, miR‐146b, miR‐155, and miR‐206 were determined using real‐time polymerase chain reaction. Based on immunohistological findings on endomyocardial biopsy, iCMP was diagnosed in 67% of study participants (n = 60). Plasma levels of miR‐155 and miR‐206 were significantly increased in patients with iCMP as compared with patients with dilated cardiomyopathy (P = 0.008 and P = 0.009, respectively). In receiver operating characteristic curve analysis, miR‐155 and miR‐206 demonstrated superior diagnostic performance for iCMP (0.68 and 0.67, respectively) compared with LLC [area under the curve (AUC) 0.60], Troponin T (AUC 0.51), and N‐terminal pro‐brain natriuretic peptide (AUC 0.51). While baseline miR‐155 and miR‐206 plasma levels were predictive for biopsy‐proven iCMP (odds ratio = 2.61, 95% confidence interval = 1.28–5.31, P = 0.008 and odds ratio = 2.65, 95% confidence interval = 1.27–5.52, P = 0.009) on univariate logistic regression analysis, the presence of positive LLC, high baseline C‐reactive protein, or presence of clinical symptoms and signs of viral infection failed to predict iCMP (P > 0.05, respectively). Conclusions The present data suggest that plasma levels of miR‐206 and miR‐155 are potential novel biomarkers for confirming the diagnosis of iCMP.

Abstract

This research focuses on an improved automatic target recognition algorithm for solving the classification challenge of ground-moving targets from pulsed-Doppler radar. First, it was studied how decision-making intervals affect the proposed algorithm. Second, the altering of the data augmentation process was investigated. Third, a consideration of the three time-frequency signal representations and finally the use of different deep learning models for the classification issues were examined. It is proven that the proposed algorithm can efficiently recognize all targets enclosed in the publicly available RadEch dataset, with 4 s of radar echoes. When the decision-making time is only 1 s, a classification probability of 99.9% was obtained, which is an improvement related to the other research studies in this area. Furthermore, when the decision-making time is reduced 16 times the classification accuracy is reduced by only 1.3%. Moreover, the proposed algorithm was successful on another dataset enclosing ground-moving targets from comparable pulsed-Doppler radar. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Neovascularization is regarded as a pre-requisite in successful tissue grafting of both hard and soft tissues alike. This study considers mesenchymal stem cells from hair follicle outer root sheath (MSCORS) as powerful tools with a neat angiogenic potential that could in the future have wide scopes of neo-angiogenesis and tissue engineering. Autologous MSCORS were obtained ex vivo by non-invasive plucking of hair and they were differentiated in vitro into both endothelial cells and vascular smooth muscle cells (SMCs), two crucial cellular components of vascular grafts. Assessment was carried out by immunostaining, confocal laser-scanning microscopy, gene expression analysis (qRT-PCR), quantitative analysis of anastomotic network parameters, and cumulative length quantification of immunostained α-smooth muscle actin-containing stress fibers (α -SMA). In comparison to adipose mesenchymal stem cells, MSCORS exhibited a significantly higher differentiation efficiency according to key quantitative criteria and their endothelial derivatives demonstrated a higher angiogenic potential. Furthermore, the cells were capable of depositing their own extracellular matrix in vitro in the form of a membrane-cell sheet, serving as a base for viable co-culture of endothelial cells and SMCs integrated with their autologous matrix. Differentiated MSCORS hereby provided a complex autologous cell-matrix construct that demonstrates vascularization capacity and can serve as a base for personalized repair grafting applications.

Abstract

A large share of renewable energy sources integrated into the national grids and an increased interconnection capacity with asynchronous networks, are the main contributors in reducing the kinetic energy storage in the Nordic Power System. Challenges arise to operate system after a loss of generation and to minimize the offshore systems interaction with onshore grids. To assess the associated challenges, a novel dynamic model was developed under the phasor approximation to represent the future Northern European Power System, including High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) links and future offshore energy islands in the North Sea. First, the future frequency response is provided for two large disturbances to highlight the benefit of the developed model and point out potential future frequency issues. Consequently, further actions are investigated to better utilize the existing frequency containment reserves or to partially replace them using emergency droop-based power control of HVDC links. Lastly, the offshore grid interaction and frequency support to the Nordic network is investigated, and the dynamic response is compared for zero- and low-inertia designs of the offshore energy islands. The simulations were performed using industrial software, and the associated material is made publicly available.

Abstract

In this paper, strategies for a holistic integration of multiple HVDC links into existing power systems are presented. High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) links can support the operation of AC grids on different timescales. Contrary to AC transmission lines, the power flow on HVDC links can be freely controlled. Due to their ability of rapidly controlling the power transmitted, they can help to stabilize the dynamic system response of interconnected power systems, e.g. providing fast frequency response. Moreover, they can be an important tool in controlling and in optimizing the operation of interconnected power system. In this paper, different strategies are presented, then their benefits and potential challenges are discussed.

Aims In heart failure, various biomarkers are established for diagnosis and risk stratification; however, little is known about the relevance of serial measurements during an episode worsening heart failure (WHF). This study sought to investigate the trajectory of natriuretic peptides and multiple novel biomarkers during hospitalization for WHF and to determine the best time point to predict outcome. Methods and results MOLITOR (Impact of Therapy Optimisation on the Level of Biomarkers in Patients with Acute and Decompensated Chronic Heart Failure) was an eight‐centre prospective study of 164 patients hospitalized with a primary diagnosis of WHF.
