Abstract

Debate persists concerning the timing and geodynamics of intercontinental collision, style of syncollisional deformation, and development of topography and fold-and-thrust belts along the >1,700-km-long Izmir-Ankara-Erzincan suture zone (IAESZ) in Turkey. Resolving this debate is a necessary precursor to evaluating the integrity of convergent margin models and kinematic, topographic, and biogeographic reconstructions of the Mediterranean domain. Geodynamic models argue either for a synchronous or diachronous collision during either the Late Cretaceous and/or Eocene, followed by Eocene slab breakoff and postcollisional magmatism. We investigate the collision chronology in western Anatolia as recorded in the sedimentary archives of the 90-km-long Saricakaya Basin perched at shallow structural levels along the IAESZ. Based on new zircon U-Pb geochronology and depositional environment and sedimentary provenance results, we demonstrate that the Saricakaya Basin is an Eocene sedimentary basin with sediment sourced from both the IAESZ and Sogut Thrust fault to the south and north, respectively, and formed primarily by flexural loading from north-south shortening along the syncollisional Sogut Thrust. Our results refine the timing of collision between the Anatolides and Pontide terranes in western Anatolia to Maastrichtian-Middle Paleocene and Early Eocene crustal shortening and basin formation. Furthermore, we demonstrate contemporaneous collision, deformation, and magmatism across the IAESZ, supporting synchronous collision models. We show that regional postcollisional magmatism can be explained by renewed underthrusting instead of slab breakoff. This new IAESZ chronology provides additional constraints for kinematic, geodynamic, and biogeographic reconstructions of the Mediterranean domain.

Abstract

Determination of the relationships between the southern, marine-dominated Miocene basins of south central Turkey and their continental hinterland in southern Turkey has traditionally been frustrated by the apparent absence of basin remnants within the Taurus Mountains. The Dikme basin, which seems to be an enclave of basin remnants within the Aladag Mountains (Eastern Taurides), consists mainly of coarse-grained continental sediments of various facies. These mostly early-middle Miocene sediments were studied to determine the depositional environments and the factors controlling the basin formation and basin fill architecture, to attempt to close the information gap between the Adana Basin to the south and central Anatolian Miocene further to the north. A generally southwest-flowing axial fluvial system and interfingering coarse-grained marginal alluvial clastics derived from northwest and southeast were identified. The marginal facies to the northwest is bounded by a N 55[degrees]E-running structural lineament, that starts from the Ecemis Fault Zone and in digital elevation models extends toward the north of the study area. Along this lineament, Miocene sediments onlap steep fault-line escarpments. Certain Miocene levels are tectonically disrupted, and an intraformational unconformity and boulder conglomerates are also well-developed in the Miocene sequence. The southeast boundary is similarly defined by a NE-trending fault that periodically elevated the adjacent Tufanbeyli autochthon, producing coarse clastics from this area. This boundary fault also induced fining-upwards vertical patterns and synsedimentary deformation in the marginal facies. Additionally, the central part of the basin exhibits a distinct fault-defined morphology characterized by small-scale (tens of metres to 150 m high) valley-and-sill topography. A thin marine interval was also encountered in the southernmost part of the basin, indicating that the clastic system originating around this area debouched into a Miocene sea situated further to the south. The proposed palaeogeography and basin fill model suggests that the Dikme basin and similar Miocene remnants, all controlled mainly by a northeast-running extensional or transtensional fault system, may have been parts of the terrestrial hinterland that supplied sediment to rapidly subsiding marine areas further south, such as the Adana Basin. Abstract

Soil degradation and desertification processes in the Mediterranean basin reflect the interplay between environmental and socioeconomic drivers. An approach to evaluate comparatively the multiple relationships between biophysical variables and socioeconomic factors is illustrated in the present study using the data collected from 586 field sites located in five Mediterranean areas (Spain, Greece, Turkey, Tunisia and Morocco). A total of 47 variables were chosen to illustrate land-use, farm characteristics, population pressure, tourism development, rainfall regime, water availability, soil properties and vegetation cover, among others. A data mining approach incorporating non-parametric inference, principal component analysis and hierarchical clustering was developed to identify candidate syndromes of soil degradation and desertification risk. While field sites in the same study area showed a substantial similarity, the multivariate relationship among variables diverged among study areas. Data mining techniques proved to be a practical tool to identify spatial determinants of soil degradation and desertification risk. Our findings identify the contrasting spatial patterns for biophysical and socioeconomic variables, in turn associated with different responses to land degradation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

A Cretaceous-Paleogene (K-Pg) succession is studied in detail in the Mudurnu-Goynuk basin in northwestern Turkey. To characterize the K-Pg transition in this basin, two stratigraphic sections were measured and sampled at high resolution: the Okçular and the GEUROoynu?k North sections. These sections were analysed for siderophile trace elements, including Ir and other platinum group elements (PGE: Ru, Rh, Pd, Ir, Pt), bulk stable carbon isotopes, calcareous nannofossils, planktic foraminifera and organic walled dinoflagellate cysts (dinocysts). In this basin, the upper Maastrichtian consists of monotonous grey mudstones, mostly intercalated with turbidites and the basal Danian is characterised by grey mudstones, that are overlain by a rhythmic alternation of limetones and mudstones. The K-Pg boundary is marked by a thin, reddish ejecta layer, characterized by an enrichment of PGE and an abrupt negative shift in bulk d13C. This ejecta layer is followed by 15e17 cm of thick darker, clayey mudstone, the socalled boundary clay. The upper Maastrichtian to lower Danian interval displays a succession of biostratigraphic events, such as the globally recognized spike of the dinocyst taxon Manumiella druggii in the Maastrichtian, followed by the extinction of Cretaceous planktic foraminifera at the K-Pg boundary, and a subsequent rapid succession of First Occurrences (FOs) of dinocysts, such as Senoniasphaera inornata, Membranilarnacia? tenella and Damassadinium californicum and planktic foraminifera, including Parvularugoglobigerina eugubina and Subbotina triloculinoides in the lower Danian. Overall the sedimentological and palaeontological data suggest that the studied sites in the Mudurnu-Goynuk basin were deposited under normal marine conditions, likely in an outer neritic to upper bathyal environment. Our geochemical and biostratigraphic characterization of the K-Pg boundary transition in the Mudurnu-Goynuk basin provides a new K-Pg boundary record in the Northern branch of the Neo-Tethys and allows a detailed comparison with K-Pg boundary sections worldwide.
