Downward gazing is often observed when walking requires guidance. This gaze behavior is thought to promote walking stability through anticipatory stepping control. This study is part of an ongoing effort to investigate whether downward gazing also serves to enhance postural control, which can promote walking stability through a feedback/reactive mechanism. Since gaze behavior alone gives no indication as to what information is gathered and the functions it serves, we aimed to investigate the cognitive demands associated with downward gazing, as they are likely to differ between anticipatory and feedback use of visual input. To do so, we used a novel methodology to compromise walking stability in a manner that could not be resolved through modulation of stepping. Then, using interference methodology and neuroimaging, we tested for (1) interference related to dual tasking, and (2) changes in prefrontal activity. The novel methodology resulted in an increase in the time spent looking at the walking surface. Further, while some dual-task interference was observed, indicating that this gaze behavior is cognitively demanding, several gaze parameters pertaining to downward gazing and prefrontal activity correlated. These correlations revealed that a greater tendency to gaze onto the walking surface was associated with lower PFC activity, as is expected when sensory information is used through highly automatic, and useful, neural circuitry. These results, while not conclusive, do suggest that gazing onto the walking surface can be used for purposes other than anticipatory stepping control, bearing important motor-control and clinical implications.

It has been previously demonstrated that the adaptive phase changes of steady-state pattern electroretinogram (SS-PERG), recorded during 4-min presentation of patterned stimuli, are reduced in glaucoma suspects and patients compared to normal subjects. Our study aims at testing the hypothesis that adaptive changes of SS-PERG, recorded using the novel optimized Next Generation PERG (PERGx) protocol, differ between glaucoma patients and controls. In this pilot cross-sectional study, we included 28 glaucoma patients and 17 age-matched normal subjects. Both patients and controls underwent a full ophthalmologic examination, visual field testing, OCT and PERGx. The PERGx signal was sampled over 2 min (providing 1 noise and 9 signal packets) in response to alternating gratings generated on an OLED display. PERGx amplitude and phase were analyzed to quantify adaptive changes over recording time. Background The purpose of this study was to investigate the usefulness of salivary cortisol (SC) and eye temperature measured by infrared thermography (IRTET) as biomarkers to manage competitions more effectively and monitor horse welfare in endurance competitions. Based on previous studies, it was hypothesised that pre-exercise baseline SC and IRTET would be higher in younger or less experienced horses, and that post-exercise variation from baseline would be higher in the top finishers. Results Salivary cortisol measured in 61 competing at qualifier 40 km and 80 km rides showed an abrupt variation (93–256% rise) of the baseline SC levels [median ± interquartile range (IQR) = 0.27 ng/dl ± 0.36] obtained at the Pre-Inspection (PI) into Vet Gate (VG)1 independently of the covered distance, but modest or even lower in the subsequent Vet Gates, e.g. VG2 or VG3. The IRTET measured concomitantly in 16 horses showed significant (p p ET in the PI was correlated with better placement (p p Conclusion Pre-exercise baseline IRTET levels, but not SC, were higher in less experienced horses in the 40 compared to their counterparts in the 80 km ride competitions. SC and IRTET showed different indications according to the competition. In the40 km ride competition, higher baseline pre-exercise SC levels seemed to be linked to a better classification outcome. In contrast, in the 80 km ride horses, the higher IRTET variation from pre-exercise into final Vet Gate was the parameter associated with a better performance. A more controlled environment and a larger sample are needed to confirm these results and monitor horse welfare in competitions.

Acute aerobic exercise increases the brain cortical activity in alpha frequency. Eye closure also increases alpha activity. However, whether the two have an additive or a synergistic effect on alpha activity has never been explored. This study observed electroencephalography (EEG) from fifteen participants seated on the cycle ergometer before, during, and after a cycling exercise with the eyes open and with them closed. Exercise intensity was set to a target heart rate (120–130 bpm), corresponding to light-to-moderate intensity exercise. Each epoch was 6 min and the last 4 min (eyes closed in the first 2 min and eyes open in the second 2 min) were analyzed. The EEG power spectrum densities were calculated for alpha frequency band activity (8–13 Hz). At rest, alpha activity was significantly greater with the eyes closed than open. Exercise significantly increased alpha activity in both eye conditions. More importantly, in the occipital site, the alpha-increasing effect of their combination was significantly greater than the sum of the effect of each, showing a synergistic effect. We concluded that acute light-to-moderate intensity exercise with the eyes closed has a synergistic effect on alpha activity.

PURPOSE To provide a descriptive investigation about relevant features of the crested caracara's eye (Caracara plancus) and bony orbit, as well as provide data for ophthalmic tests. METHODS Morphological observations and the following diagnostic tests were performed: Schirmer tear test (STT), conjunctival flora evaluation, corneal touch threshold (CTT), intraocular pressure (IOP), central corneal thickness (CCT), B-mode ocular biometry, palpebral fissure length (PFL), and corneal diameter (CD) in 19 healthy birds, plus two macerated skulls. Not all birds were used for each test. RESULTS STT: 7.84 ± 3.05 mm/min; CTT: 2.46 ± 1.10 cm; IOP: 19.18 ± 3.07 mmHg; CCT: 0.31 ± 0.02 mm; PFL: 13.32 ± 1.06 mm; CD: 10.26 ± 2.43 mm; Axial globe length: 1.89 ± 0.06 cm; Anterior chamber depth: 0.27 ± 0.06 cm; Lens axial length: 4.55 ± 0.06 cm; Vitreous chamber depth: 1.2 ± 0.07 cm. The most frequent conjunctival bacterial isolates were Corynebacterium sp. (10/23.8%), Staphylococcus sp. (9/21.42%), Streptococcus sp. (7/16.6%), and E. coli (7/16.66%). The large lateral part of the palatine bone likely plays a role in the ventral protection of the globe against the impact of prey. Observed results are generally reflective of increased body mass compared to other Falconiformes, with values approaching those of similar sized Accipitriformes. CONCLUSIONS These data may help veterinarians recognize peculiar morphologic features and perform a more accurate diagnosis of eye diseases of this avian species.

Quantitative retinal imaging is essential for advanced study and clinical management of eye diseases. However, spatial resolution of retinal imaging has been limited due to available numerical aperture and optical aberration of the ocular optics. Structured illumination microscopy has been established to break the diffraction-limit resolution in conventional light microscopy. However, practical implementation of structured illumination microscopy for in vivo ophthalmoscopy of the retina is challenging due to inevitable eye movements that can produce phase artifacts. Recently, we have demonstrated the feasibility of using virtually structured detection as one alternative to structured illumination microscopy for super-resolution imaging. By providing the flexibility of digital compensation of eye movements, the virtually structured detection provides a feasible, phase-artifact-free strategy to achieve super-resolution ophthalmoscopy. In this article, we summarize the technical rationale of virtually structured detection, and its implementations for super-resolution imaging of freshly isolated retinas, intact animals, and awake human subjects.

Expansion of anthropogenic noise and night lighting across our planet1,2 is of increasing conservation concern3–6. Despite growing knowledge of physiological and behavioural responses to these stimuli from single-species and local-scale studies, whether these pollutants affect fitness is less clear, as is how and why species vary in their sensitivity to these anthropic stressors. Here we leverage a large citizen science dataset paired with high-resolution noise and light data from across the contiguous United States to assess how these stimuli affect reproductive success in 142 bird species. We find responses to both sensory pollutants linked to the functional traits and habitat affiliations of species. For example, overall nest success was negatively correlated with noise among birds in closed environments. Species-specific changes in reproductive timing and hatching success in response to noise exposure were explained by vocalization frequency, nesting location and diet. Additionally, increased light-gathering ability of species’ eyes was associated with stronger advancements in reproductive timing in response to light exposure, potentially creating phenological mismatches7. Unexpectedly, better light-gathering ability was linked to reduced clutch failure and increased overall nest success in response to light exposure, raising important questions about how responses to sensory pollutants counteract or exacerbate responses to other aspects of global change, such as climate warming. These findings demonstrate that anthropogenic noise and light can substantially affect breeding bird phenology and fitness, and underscore the need to consider sensory pollutants alongside traditional dimensions of the environment that typically inform biodiversity conservation. Human-generated noise and night lighting affect breeding habits and fitness in birds, implying that sensory pollutants must be considered alongside other environmental factors in assessing biodiversity conservation.

To evaluate the changes in certain ocular signs because of age, among Mexican women and to compare these with those previously obtained on women of other ethnicities.Photographs were taken of the faces of 203 Mexican women of different ages, under standardized conditions. These photographs allowed us to focus and define nine ocular signs, which were then graded by 15 experts and dermatologists, using standardized scales provided by a reference Skin Aging Atlas. Hence, the same protocol, previously used on 3240 women of four other ethnic origins (Caucasian: 600; Chinese: 990; Japanese: 1010; Indian: 300; African: 340), allowed us to compare the results obtained on Mexican women.The severity of crow's feet wrinkles for Mexican women shows a more intense progression with age than those of women from other ancestries. The lower eyelid wrinkles of Mexican women, that show weak or erratic changes with time, were however found to have higher and significant severity at a young age. Pigmentation disorders of their ocular area were found less pronounced as compared to those of Asian or Indian women. Les rides de la paupière inférieure des femmes mexicaines, présentant des variations faibles ou erratiques avec l’âge, ont cependant été scorées avec une sévérité significativement supérieure pour les âges les plus jeunes. Les désordres pigmentaires pour la zone des yeux ont été trouvés comme moins prononcés en comparaison des femmes d’origine asiatique ou indienne. Les poches sous les yeux ont été observées avec des évolutions similaires avec l’âge quelle que soit l’origine ethnique.Ces travaux confirment que les signes cliniques de la zone des yeux présentent différentes évolutions avec l’âge en fonction des origines ethniques.

The vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR) and the optokinetic reflex (OKR) work synergistically to stabilize gaze in response to head movements. We previously demonstrated that a 14-day visuo-vestibular mismatch (VVM) protocol applied in freely behaving mice decreased the VOR gain. Here, we show for the first time that the OKR gain is also reduced and report on the recovery dynamics of both VOR and OKR after the end of the VVM protocol. Background: The degree of alpha attenuation from eyes-closed (EC) to eyes-open (EO) has been suggested as a neural marker of cognitive health, and its disruption has been reported in patients with clinically defined Alzheimer’s disease (AD) dementia. Objective: We tested if EC-to-EO alpha reactivity was related to cerebral amyloid-β (Aβ) deposition during the early stage of AD. Methods: Non-demented participants aged ≥55 years who visited the memory clinic between March 2018 and June 2019 (N = 143; 67.8% female; mean age±standard deviation, 74.0±7.6 years) were included in the analyses. Based on the [18F]florbetaben positron emission tomography assessment, the participants were divided into Aβ+ (N = 70) and Aβ- (N = 73) groups. EEG was recorded during the 7 min EC condition followed by a 3 min EO phase, and a Fourier transform spectral analysis was performed. Results: A significant three-way interaction was detected among Aβ positivity, eye condition, and the laterality factor on alpha-band power after adjusting for age, sex, educational years, global cognition, depression, medication use, and white matter hyperintensities on magnetic resonance imaging (F = 5.987, p = 0.016); EC-to-EO alpha reactivity in the left hemisphere was significantly reduced in Aβ+ subjects without dementia compared with the others (F = 3.984, p = 0.048). Conclusion: Among mild cognitive impairment subjects, alpha reactivity additively contributed to predict cerebral Aβ positivity beyond the clinical predictors, including vascular risks, impaired memory function, and apolipoprotein E ɛ4. These findings support that EC-to-EO alpha reactivity acts as an early biomarker of cerebral Aβ deposition and is a useful measurement for screening early-stage AD.

Central serous chorioretinopathy (CSCR) is a retinal disease affecting the retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) and the choroid. This is a recognized side-effect of glucocorticoids (GCs), administered through nasal, articular, oral and dermal routes. However, CSCR does not occur after intraocular GCs administration, suggesting that a hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis (HPA) brake could play a role in the mechanistic link between CSCR and GS. The aim of this study was to explore this hypothesis. To induce HPA brake, Lewis rats received a systemic injection of dexamethasone daily for five days. Control rats received saline injections. Baseline levels of corticosterone were measured by Elisa at baseline and at 5 days in the serum and the ocular media and dexamethasone levels were measured at 5 days in the serum and ocular media. The expression of genes encoding glucocorticoid receptor (GR), mineralocorticoid receptors (MR), and the 11 beta hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase (HSD) enzymes 1 and 2 were quantified in the neural retina and in RPE/ choroid. The expression of MR target genes was quantified in the retina (Scnn1A (encoding ENac-α, Kir4.1 and Aqp4) and in the RPE/choroid (Shroom 2, Ngal, Mmp9 and Omg, Ptx3, Plaur and Fosl-1). Only 10% of the corticosterone serum concentration was measured in the ocular media. Corticosterone levels in the serum and in the ocular media dropped after 5 days of dexamethasone systemic treatment, reflecting HPA axis brake. Whilst both GR and MR were downregulated in the retina without MR/GR imbalance, in the RPE/choroid, both MR/GR and 11β-hsd2/11β-hsd1 ratio increased, indicating MR pathway activation. MR-target genes were upregulated in the RPE/ choroid but not in the retina. The psychological stress induced by the repeated injection of saline also induced HPA axis brake with a trend towards MR pathway activation in RPE/ choroid. HPA axis brake causes an imbalance of corticoid receptors expression in the RPE/choroid towards overactivation of MR pathway, which could favor the occurrence of CSCR.

Dry eye disease (DED) is a highly prevalent ocular surface disorder with neuroimmune pathophysiology. Tear hyperosmolarity (THO), a frequent finding in affected patients, is considered a key element in DED pathogenesis, yet existing animal models are based on subjecting the ocular surface to the more complex desiccating stress − decreased tear production and/or increased evaporation − instead of strict hyperosmolar stress. Here we characterized a murine model of THO that does not involve desiccating stress, thus allowing us to dissect the contribution of THO to DED. Our results showed that THO is sufficient to disrupt neuroimmune homeostasis of the ocular surface in mice, and thus reproduce many sub‐clinical DED findings. THO activated nuclear factor‐κB signalling in conjunctival epithelial cells and increased dendritic cell recruitment and maturation, leading to more activated (CD69+) and memory (CD62lo CD44hi) CD4+ T‐cells in the eye‐draining lymph nodes. Ultimately, THO impaired the development of ocular mucosal tolerance to a topical surrogate antigen in a chain of events that included epithelial nuclear factor‐κB signalling and activation of transient receptor potential vanilloid 1 as the probable hypertonicity sensor. Also, THO reduced the density of corneal intraepithelial nerves and terminals, and sensitized the ocular surface to hypertonicity. Finally, the adoptive transfer of T‐cells from THO mice to naïve recipients under mild desiccating stress favoured DED development, showing that THO is enough to trigger an actual pathogenic T‐cell response. Many people with stroke (PwS) demonstrate reduced balance and increased postural sway afterwards, which may ultimately lead to falls and injury. In this study, we aimed to better understand postural sway behavior and the mechanisms of balance control by examining balance in upright standing among PwS using methods from statistical mechanics i.e., the Stabilogram diffusion analysis (SDA). Center-of-pressure displacements while standing still were measured in 25 PwS and 11 healthy subjects. The traditional postural sway parameters were measured, and the SDA was used to characterize balance control in eyes-open and eyes-closed conditions. We found that PwS demonstrated significantly greater postural sway in the mediolateral and anterior–posterior directions and significantly higher SDA short-term diffusion coefficients and critical displacement in both eyes-open and eyes-closed conditions. There was also a significant group-by-condition interaction, whereas PwS demonstrated more sway in the eyes-closed condition. The SDA analysis revealed unstable behavior during short-term intervals, interpreted as larger distance of sway until closed-loop control took place. This significant group-by-condition interaction suggests that PwS have a significantly greater reliance on visual input compared with healthy subjects.

The ocular surface is naturally covered with a layer of mucus. Along with other functions, this mucus layer serves to trap and eliminate foreign substances, such as allergens, pathogens, and debris. In playing this pivotal role, mucus can also hinder topical delivery of therapeutics to the eye. Recent studies provide evidence that drugs formulated as traditional micro- or nanoparticles are susceptible to entrapment and rapid clearance by ocular mucus. Mucus-penetrating particles (MPPs) is a nanoparticle technology that emerged over the past decade. With a muco-inert surface and a particle size smaller than the mucus mesh size, MPPs can diffuse in ex vivo mucus essentially freely. Preclinical studies have shown that, compared with particles lacking the mucus-penetrating attributes, MPPs can improve the uniformity of drug particle distribution on mucosal surfaces and enhance drug delivery to ocular tissues.

Significance Recent technological advances have enabled the creation of custom light fields with remarkable properties. Here we report an experiment that merges human visual perception with structured wavefronts and optical states that are nonseparable in polarization and spatial modes of light. We demonstrate that humans are able to discriminate between two polarization-coupled orbital angular momentum states with a high probability when directly viewing a structured light beam. The work brings the techniques of structured light to visual science applications and paves the way for methods of characterizing the structure of the macula and conducting experiments with human detectors and optical states with nonseparable modes., We predict and experimentally verify an entoptic phenomenon through which humans are able to perceive and discriminate optical spin–orbit states. Direct perception and discrimination of these particular states of light with polarization-coupled spatial modes is possible through the observation of distinct profiles induced by the interaction between polarization topologies and the radially symmetric dichroic elements that are centered on the foveola in the macula of the human eye. A psychophysical study was conducted where optical states with a superposition of right and left circular polarization coupled to two different orbital angular momentum (OAM) values (ℓ1 and ℓ2) were directed onto the retina of participants. The number of azimuthal fringes that a human sees when viewing the spin–orbit states is shown to be equal to the number (N) of radial lines in the corresponding polarization profile of the beam, where N=|(ℓ1−ℓ2)−2|. The participants were able to correctly discriminate between two states carrying OAM =7 and differentiated by N=5 and N=9, with an average success probability of 77.6% (average sensitivity d′=1.7, t(9)=5.9, p=2×10−4). These results enable methods of robustly characterizing the structure of the macula, probing retina signaling pathways, and conducting experiments with human detectors and optical states with nonseparable modes.

A previous study reported thermal effects resulting from millimeter wave exposures at 35 and 94 GHz on non-human primates, specifically rhesus monkeys' (Macaca mulatta) corneas, but the data exhibited large variations in the observed temperatures and uncertainties in the millimeter wave dosimetry. By incorporating improvements in models and dosimetry, a non-human primate experiment was conducted involving corneal exposures that agreed well with a three-layer, one-dimensional, thermodynamic model to predict the expected surface temperature rise. The new data indicated that the originally reported safety margins for eye exposures were underestimated by 41 ± 20% over the power densities explored. As a result, the expected minimal visible lesion thresholds should be raised to 10.6 ± 1.5 and 7.1 ± 1.0 J cm at 35 and 94 GHz, respectively, provided that the power density is less than 6 W cm for subjects that are unable to blink. If the blink reflex was active, a power density threshold of 20 W cm could be used to protect the eye, although the eyelid could be burned if the exposure was long enough.

The review highlights the way in which environmental stressors affect the eye and vision, both directly and indirectly. Abstract Much is known about the physiology and anatomy of the eye. Much less is known about the impact of different environments on the eye, and yet it is the pathophysiology that results from this interaction that is often the precursor to disaster. The present review focuses on the effect of different extreme environments on the visual system; in particular, the way in which such environments affect the sensory mechanism of that system.

In recent years, with the development of brain science and biomedical engineering, as well as the rapid development of electroencephalogram (EEG) signal analysis methods, using EEG signals to monitor human health has become a very popular research field. The innovation of this paper is to analyze the EEG signal for the first time by building a depth factorization machine model, so that on the basis of analyzing the characteristics of user interaction, we can use EEG data to predict the binomial state of eyes (open eyes and closed eyes). The significance of the research is that we can diagnose the fatigue and the health of the human body by detecting the state of eyes for a long time. On the basis of this inference, the proposed method can make a further useful auxiliary support for improving the accuracy of the recommendation system recommendation results. In this paper, we first extract the features of EEG data by wavelet transform technology and then build a depth factorization machine model (FM+LSTM) which combines factorization machine (FM) and Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) in parallel. Through the test of real data set, the proposed model gets more efficient prediction results than other classifier models. In addition, the model proposed in this paper is suitable not only for the determination of eye features but also for the acquisition of interactive features (user fatigue) in the recommendation system. The conclusion obtained in this paper will be an important factor in the determination of user preferences in the recommendation system, which will be used in the analysis of interactive features by the graph neural network in the future work.

The passing of Jack Pettigrew (University of Queensland) and Bogdan Dreher (University of Sydney) within two weeks of each other in May 2019 provided the catalyst for reviewing the roles that they and their colleagues from the Peter Bishop School played in establishing vision research as a major strength in Australian neuroscience in the second half of the 20th century. OBJECTIVE The aim of the present study was to provide ophthalmic reference values under normal physiological conditions for Aegypius monachus (cinereous vulture). PROCEDURES Thirty-two eyes of sixteen adult captive cinereous vultures were used for this study. Tear tests and tonometry in conscious and anesthetized states, neuro-ophthalmic tests, measurement of corneal diameter, slit-lamp biomicroscopy, ophthalmoscopy, and funduscopy were performed. RESULTS Schirmer tear test (STT) value was 11.4 ± 2.6 and 11.5 ± 2.8 mm/min in the right (OD) and left eye (OS), respectively. Phenol red thread test (PRT) values were 22.3 ± 2.1 mm/15 s OD and 22.8 ± 3.0 mm/15 s OS. The results showed a strong correlation between STT and PRT in both eyes. Intraocular pressure (IOP) values were 32.8 ± 6.9 mm Hg OD and 31.9 ± 7.1 mm Hg OS with TonoVet and 20.7 ± 4.5 mm Hg OD and 19.5 ± 4.1 mm Hg OS with Tono-Pen. There were significant differences in IOPs between rebound and applanation tonometry in both OD and OS. Several studies reported changes in spontaneous electroencephalogram alpha band activity related to radiofrequency electromagnetic fields, but findings showed both an increase and a decrease of its spectral power or no effect. Here, we studied the alpha band modulation after 900 MHz mobile phone radiofrequency exposure and localized cortical regions involved in these changes, via a magnetoencephalography (MEG) protocol with healthy volunteers in a double-blind, randomized, counterbalanced crossover design. MEG was recorded during eyes open and eyes closed resting-state before and after radiofrequency exposure. Potential confounding factors, known to affect alpha band activity, were assessed as control parameters to limit bias. Entire alpha band, lower and upper alpha sub-bands MEG power spectral densities were estimated in sensor and source space. Biochemistry assays for salivary biomarkers of stress (cortisol, chromogranin-A, alpha amylase), heart rate variability analysis and high-performance liquid chromatography for salivary caffeine concentration were realized. Results in sensor and source space showed a significant modulation of MEG alpha band activity after the radiofrequency exposure, with different involved cortical regions in relation to the eyes condition, probably because of different attention level with open or closed eyes. None of the control parameters reported a statistically significant difference between experimental sessions.

Purpose To evaluate the age-related change in color visual acuity (CVA) in normal eyes. Methods In total, 162 normal eyes (162 subjects, women: 52, men: 110, age range: 15–68 years) with best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) ≥20/13 were enrolled. Fifteen colors from the New Color Test (chroma 6) were applied to Landolt “C” rings, white point D65 was applied as background, and a luminance of 30 cd/m2 was set for both the rings and the background. These rings were used to measure the chromatic spatial discrimination acuity as the CVA value, while changing the stimulus size. Correlations of the CVA value of each color and age were evaluated. Mean CVA values of all 15 colors (logarithm of the minimum angle of resolution) were compared between age groups in 10-year increments. Results Nine CVA values (red, yellow-red, red-yellow, green, blue-green, green-blue, purple, red-purple, and purple-red) were negatively correlated with age (all pp Conclusions The CVA values related to the medium/long-wavelength-sensitive cones were more susceptible to aging than those related to the short-wavelength-sensitive cones. This differed from previous reports, and may be related to the difference in the range of foveal cone function evaluated with each examination.

Recent interest in applying novel imaging techniques to infer optical resolution in compound eyes underscores the difficulty of obtaining direct measures of acuity. A widely used technique exploits the principal pseudopupil, a dark spot on the eye surface representing the ommatidial gaze direction and the number of detector units (ommatidia) viewing that gaze direction. However, dark-pigmented eyes, like those of honeybees, lack a visible pseudopupil. Attempts over almost a century to estimate optical acuity in this species are still debated. Here, we developed a method to visualize a stable, reliable pseudopupil by staining the photoreceptors with fluorescent dyes. We validated this method in several species and found it to outperform the dark pseudopupil for this purpose, even in pale eyes, allowing more precise location of the gaze centre. We then applied this method to estimate the sampling resolution in the frontal part of the eye of the honeybee forager. We found a broad frontal acute zone with interommatidial angles below 2° and a minimum interommatidial angle of 1.3°, a broader, sharper frontal acute zone than previously reported. Our study provides a new method to directly measure the sampling resolution in most compound eyes of living animals.

Insect sensory systems are the subjects of different selective pressures that shape their morphology. In many species of the flesh fly subfamily Miltogramminae (Diptera: Sarcophagidae) that are kleptoparasitic on bees and wasps, females perch on objects close to the host nests and, once a returning host is detected, they follow it in flight at a fixed distance behind until reaching the nest. We hypothesized that such satellite (SAT) flight behaviour, which implies a finely coordinated trailing flight, is associated with an improved visual system, compared to species adopting other, non-satellite (NON-SAT) strategies. After looking at body size and common ancestry, we found that SAT species have a greater number of ommatidia and a greater eye surface area when compared to NON-SAT species. Ommatidium area is only affected by body size, suggesting that selection changes disproportionately (relative to body size variation) the number of ommatidia and as a consequence the eye area, instead of ommatidium size. SAT species also tend to have larger ocelli, but their role in host-finding was less clear. This suggests that SAT species may have a higher visual acuity by increasing ommatidia number, as well as better stability during flight and motion perception through larger ocelli. Interestingly, antennal length was significantly reduced in SAT species, and ommatidia number negatively correlated with antennal length. While this finding does not imply a selection pressure of improved antennal sensory system in species adopting NON-SAT strategies, it suggests an inverse resource (i.e. a single imaginal disc) allocation between eyes and antennae in this fly subfamily.
