Aspects of the pollination biology and floral characteristics of Solanum caavurana Vell. Were investigated in a semidecidual seasonal forest fragment in Paraná, Brazil. Anthesis was diurnal and the Pseudaugochlora bees have visited the flowers with more frequency than other species. Sepals and petals had homogeneous parenchymatous mesophyll. The young anther wall was composed of epidermis, two or three layers of endothecium, two middle layers and secretory tapetum. Anthers were poricidal and there was no functional longitudinal stomium. Ovary structure was simple and there was compitum with septum split. Ovules were hemicampylotropous, unitegmic and tenuinucellate with hypostase. The flower of S. caavurana followed the Solanum pattern described in the literature, and the pollination should be made by bees.

One of the environmental concerns with AgNP is its incorrect disposal, which might lead to severe environmental pollution. The interplay between AgNP and plants is receiving increasing attention. However, little is known regarding the phytotoxic effects of biogenic AgNP on terrestrial plants. This study aimed to compare the effects of a biogenic AgNP and AgNO3 in Sorghum bicolor seedlings. Seeds were germinated in increasing concentrations of a biogenic AgNP and AgNO3 (0, 10, 100, 500, and 1000 μM) in a growth chamber with controlled conditions. The establishment and development of the seedlings were evaluated for 15 days. Physiological and morpho-anatomical indicators of stress, enzymatic, and non-enzymatic antioxidants and photosynthetic yields were assessed. The results showed that both AgNP and AgNO3 disturbed germination and the establishment of sorghum seedlings. AgNO3 released more free Ag+ spontaneously compared to AgNP, promoting increased Ag+ toxicity. Furthermore, plants exposed to AgNP triggered more efficient protective mechanisms compared with plants exposed to AgNO3. Also, the topology and connectivity of the correlation-based networks were more impacted by the exposure of AgNO3 than AgNP. In conclusion, it is plausible to say that the biogenic AgNP is less toxic to sorghum than its matrix AgNO3. Folhas de seis espécies de Leandra e Miconia foram investigadas estruturalmente, com atenção aos caracteres de interesse para separação das espécies e dos gêneros, bem como àqueles que podem estar relacionados ao estresse hídrico. Os espécimes foram coletados no Parque Estadual do Guartelá, Brasil, e descritos morfologicamente. Estudos anatômicos foram realizados em amostras foliares embebidas em historesina e seccionadas em micrótomo rotativo. A microscopia eletrônica de varredura foi feita em material fixado em glutaraldeído. As folhas de Leandra têm forma lanceolada-ovada, enquanto as folhas de Miconia possuem as lâminas oblongo-lanceoladas e lanceoladas. Ambos os gêneros possuem a vascularização do pecíolo composta de feixes colaterais, bicolaterais e anficrivais. As folhas são hipoestomáticas e dorsiventrais, variando no número de estratos dos parênquimas. A nervura central consiste em feixes concêntricos colaterais (em forma de U, em V ou circulares) ou concêntricos. A morfologia do indumento, a estrutura do mesofilo e a vascularização da nervura central são características de interesse para o diagnóstico de espécies. Provavelmente, são espécies que evitam a seca e consistem em plantas capazes de reduzir ou compensar a perda de água.

No. of bitstreams: 0 Previous issue date: 2019-02-01 Epiphytes are hyper-diverse and one of the frequently undervalued life forms in plant surveys and biodiversity inventories. Epiphytes of the Atlantic Forest, one of the most endangered ecosystems in the world, have high endemism and radiated recently in the Pliocene. We aimed to (1) compile an extensive Atlantic Forest data set on vascular, non-vascular plants (including hemiepiphytes), and lichen epiphyte species occurrence and abundance; (2) describe the epiphyte distribution in the Atlantic Forest, in order to indicate future sampling efforts. Our work presents the first epiphyte data set with information on abundance and occurrence of epiphyte phorophyte species. All data compiled here come from three main sources provided by the authors: published sources (comprising peer-reviewed articles, books, and theses), unpublished data, and herbarium data. We compiled a data set composed of 2,095 species, from 89,270 holo/hemiepiphyte records, in the Atlantic Forest of Brazil, Argentina, Paraguay, and Uruguay, recorded from 1824 to early 2018. Most of the records were from qualitative data (occurrence only, 88%), well distributed throughout the Atlantic Forest. For quantitative records, the most common sampling method was individual trees (71%), followed by plot sampling (19%), and transect sampling (10%). Angiosperms (81%) were the most frequently registered group, and Bromeliaceae and Orchidaceae were the families with the greatest number of records (27,272 and 21,945, respectively). Ferns and Lycophytes presented fewer records than Angiosperms, and Polypodiaceae were the most recorded family, and more concentrated in the Southern and Southeastern regions. Data on non-vascular plants and lichens were scarce, with a few disjunct records concentrated in the Northeastern region of the Atlantic Forest. For all non-vascular plant records, Lejeuneaceae, a family of liverworts, was the most recorded family. We hope that our effort to organize scattered epiphyte data help advance the knowledge of epiphyte ecology, as well as our understanding of macroecological and biogeographical patterns in the Atlantic Forest. For the purpose of comparing the structure of vascular cylinders, and procambial and cambial variants of Serjania Miller and Urvillea Kunth species, we studied the stems of five species, in order to add to the structural knowledge of these genera belonging to the widely distributed Sapindaceae family. Stems of sampled species were collected at “Estação Ecológica do Caiuá,” Diamante do Norte (PR), Brazil; and were analyzed using traditional anatomical techniques. We analyzed five species of two genera from the Paullinieae tribe: three species of Serjania (S. communis, S. fuscifolia, and S. meridionalis) and two of Urvillea (U. leavis and U. ulmacea); in which we describe the primary and secondary growths, the number of peripheral cylinders, the type of cylinders concerning its origin, the type of stem, and the origin of the cambial or tissue variant. Serjania stems exhibit the compound and corded types, while the cleft and mixed (cleft/corded) types have been recorded in Urvillea species. All species have peripheral vascular cylinders in which the stems of S. communis and S. fuscifolia form the procambial and cambial variants during primary growth, whereas the stems of S. meridionalis, U. leavis, and U. ulmacea develop the cambial variants during secondary growth.

Consequently, conflicting terminology exists regarding cactus fruit classification because the fruit is a complex structure in which various floral parts participate in development. We examined fruit morphogenesis in four epiphytic cacti and provided a description of developmental events from post-anthesis to fruit maturation, which unveiled new structures valuable in fruit characterisation and taxonomy of the Hylocereeae and Rhipsalideae. Succinctly, the cactus fruit is a carpellar ovary embedded in a long-shoot (pericarpel). The pericarp originates from five components: internal ovarian epidermis that delimits the fruit locule, ovary (proper), collateral vascular bundles, pericarpel (receptacular origin), and external pericarpel epidermis. In addition, cell expansion and stored mucilage, a sticky substance involved in seed dispersal, occurs during fruit development. We propose the term cactidium, a complex fruit with accessory structures of pericarpellar origin surrounding the gynoecial boundary, to describe the cactus fruit. This term is appropriate because members of the Cactaceae bear unique traits, such as areoles in the reproductive structures (pericarpel), which may produce scale-leaves, bristles, and spines. Seedling structure in Asteraceae weedy species: considerations on the vasculature system. The vasculature system of the seedling is of interest since it represents the first mature vascular coordination between shoot and root, which was foreshadowed in the procambial system of the embryo. In this study, seedlings of ten Asteraceae weedy species were analyzed focusing on the vasculature system using a morpho and anatomical approach. The roots were found to be diarch and tetrarch, the species have intermediate or high root/shoot transition, and the cotyledons develop an independent double leaf-trace and a common simple-leaf trace. The transition region of the seedlings is strikingly different when compared with other families, such as, Annonaceae, Cactaceae, Fabaceae, Myrtaceae, Amaranthaceae, Clusiaceae, and Rutaceae. In spite of the uniformity in the vascular arrangement among the Asteraceae seedlings, the conclusion attained from this study is that some essential structural details may be of diagnostic value, such as the stele arrangement, the level of the transition zone, the cotyledon sheath, and the splitting of the phloem. Further, the presence of trilacunar node in the Asteraceae can be the result of a reversal evolutionary process (homoplasy) during the life history of the family.

A long-standing interest in cactus taxonomy has existed since the Linnaean generation, but an appreciation of the reproductive biology of cacti started early in the 1900s. Numerous studies indicate that plant reproductive traits provide valuable systematic information. Despite the extensive reproductive versatility and specializations in breeding systems coupled with the striking floral shapes, the reproductive biology of the Cactaceae has been investigated in approximately 10% of its species. Hence, the systematic value of architectural design and organization of internal floral parts has remained virtually unexplored in the family. This study represents the most extensive survey of flower and nectary morphology in the Cactaceae focusing on tribes Hylocereeae and Rhipsalideae (subfamily Cactoideae). Our objectives were (1) to conduct comparative morphological analyses of flowers and floral nectaries and (2) to compare nectar solute concentration in these two tribes consisting of holo- and semi-epiphytic species. Flower morphology, nectary types, and sugar concentration of nectar have strong taxonomic implications at the tribal, generic and specific levels. Foremost, three types of nectaries were found, namely chamber nectary (with the open and diffuse subtypes), furrow nectary (including the holder nectary subtype), and annular nectary. All Hylocereeae species possess chamber nectaries, in which the nectarial tissue has both trichomes and stomata. The Rhipsalideae are distinguished by two kinds of floral nectaries: furrow and annular, both nectary types with stomata only. The annular nectary type characterizes the genus Rhipsalis. Nectar concentration is another significant taxonomic indicator separating the Hylocereeae and Rhipsalideae and establishing trends linked to nectar sugar concentration and amount of nectar production in relation to flower size. There is an inverse relationship between flower size and amount of nectar production in the smaller Rhipsalideae flowers, in which nectar concentration is more than two-fold higher despite the smaller volume of nectar produced when compared to the large Hylocereeae flowers. Variability of nectary morphology and nectar concentration was also evaluated as potential synapomorphic characters in recent phylogenies of these tribes. In conclusion, our data provide strong evidence of the systematic value of floral nectaries and nectar sugar concentration in the Cactaceae, particularly at different taxonomic levels in the Hylocereeae and Rhipsalideae.

a b s t r a c t The movement of sensitive stamens in flowers of the Plains Prickly Pear (Opuntia polyacantha) is described in detail along with the external and internal filament anatomy. The goals of this investigation were: (1) to provide a synthesis of floral phenology and determine whether this rather unique stamen movement is nastic or a tropism and (2) to conduct macro- and micro-morphological analyses of filaments to deter- mine if there are anatomical traits associated with this movement. To better understand the internal and external structure in sensitive filaments of O. polyacantha, we performed comparative anatomical analyses in two additional species from the Opuntioideae with stamens lacking such sensitivity. The con- sistent unidirectional movement of stamens, independent of the area stimulated, indicates a thigmonastic response. This movement serves multiple purposes, from enhancing pollen presentation to facilitating cross-pollination, protecting pollen and preventing insects from robbing pollen. Anatomically, the sen- sitive and non-sensitive filaments exhibit different tissue organization. Cuticle thickness, presence of capsular structures, two layers of curved cells, and more and larger intercellular spaces are characteristic of sensitive filaments. A thin unicellular epidermal layer is characteristic in sensitive filaments versus 2-3 epidermal layers in non-sensitive filaments. Another striking feature in sensitive filaments is the pres- ence of papillae and capsular structures. We believe that these elements are related to water mobility with subsequent contraction during the thigmonastic response. Capsular structures might have a role in fluid mobility according to the stimulus of the filaments. We hypothesize that the thigmonastic response is controlled by cells with elastic properties, as evidenced by the plasmolyzed curved and contracted cells in the filaments and the fact that the movement is activated by changes in cell turgor followed by contraction as a result of plasmolysis.

Seedling morphology is relevant in classification, taxonomy, and vegetation studies to understand plant life cycles, germination succession and requirements, and developmental progression. However, most morphological studies of seedlings lack analysis of organ anatomy, impeding the comprehension of series of development and establishment in a particular environment. Here, we have taken a traditional anatomical approach to examine the stages of seedling development in Epiphyllum phyllanthus, a holo-epiphytic cactus of tribe Hylocereeae. The goals were 1) to offer a comprehensive description of growth series in E. phyllanthus seedlings based on morphological and anatomical analysis and 2) to examine the initial growth phases in the life cycle of this species to identify organ development and understand their adaptive significance in relation to seedling establishment. a b s t r a c t Floral and extrafloral nectaries in plants favor pollination and defense against herbivory. Despite their wide distribution in plants and differences in position, structure, and topography, their biological and systematic significance has been underutilized. This study investigated the macro- and micromorphology of floral and extrafloral nectaries in the epiphytic cactus Rhipsalis teres and reports unusual bristle-like structures (bracteoles) functioning as extrafloral nectaries in the cactus family. The floral nectary is disc- shaped embedded in the hypanthial floral cup with anomocytic stomata as secreting structures present on the epidermal nectarial tissue. Small multicellular bristle-like extrafloral nectar-secreting structures, homologues to bracts, were observed on the plants' stems and function as bracteolar nectaries having a relatively long and continuous secretory activity throughout several stages of the reproductive structures. Both the floral and bracteolar nectaries are functional. It is possible that in the latter nectar discharge occurs though epidermal cells, which build up pressure inside as nectar accumulates, thereby ending with rupture of the cuticle to release the liquid. The nectar in both secreting structures is scentless and colorless, and the concentration from floral nectaries is slightly lower than that of the bracteolar nectaries, 70.6% and 76.4%, respectively. The relatively higher concentration in the latter might be correlated with exposure, relative humidity and water evaporation, leading to crystallization of sugars on the stem surface in a short period of time.

Em remanescentes florestais da região noroeste do Paraná (Brasil), ocorrem várias espécies de lianas, que podem afetar o desenvolvimento de espécies arbóreas e arbustivas. Dentre essas lianas, destaca-se Arrabidaea mutabilis Bur. & K. Schum., pelo rápido crescimento e número elevado de sementes aladas. A análise morfológica e anatômica do desenvolvimento da plântula e do tirodendro desta espécie é objeto do presente trabalho. O material botânico foi secionado à mão livre e em micrótomo de rotação, mediante técnicas anatômicas usuais. A plântula é fanerocotiledonar e epigéia, com cotilédones foliáceos e eofilos simples e opostos; o epicótilo tem estrutura caulinar. No tirodendro, há vários eofilos simples e compostos, formando-se o primeiro metafilo composto somente no décimo quarto nó. A raiz primária é triarca/pentarca, e o hipocótilo apresenta estrutura de zona de transição raiz/caule. Os cotilédones, eofilos e metafilo são folhas dorsiventrais. A plântula é do tipo Macaranga.In forest remnants of the Northwest region of Paraná (Brazil) several lianas that can affect the development of arboreal and shrubby species are found. Among the lianas Arrabidaea mutabilis Bur. & K. Schum. stands out for its fast growth and high number of alate seeds. The morphologic and anatomical analysis of the seedling and tirodendro Arrabidaea mutabilis development is the object of the present study. The botanical material was sectioned by freehand and rotation microtome, using conventione anatomical techniques. Seedling is phanerocotylar and epigeal, with foliaceous cotyledons and simple and opposite eophylls; the epicotyl has stem structure. There are several simple and compound eophylls in the tirodendro, the first compound metaphyll is formed only in the fourteenth node. The primary root is triarch/pentarch and the hypocotyl presents root-shoot transition structure. Cotyledons, eophylls and metaphyll are dorsiventral leaves. Seedling is of the Macaranga type.

A ontogenia dos frutos das espécies estudadas permitiu o reconhecimento do fruto cactidium para a família. As características estruturais e o desenvolvimento das sementes mostraram caracteres importantes para a taxonomia, destacando-se o tipo de óvulo, a morfologia, o tamanho e a forma da semente, bem como, a morfologia do embrião. Os resultados apresentados nesse estudo demonstram a importância do conhecimento morfoanatômico de órgãos reprodutivos para entendimento da classificação e evolução das espécies de Hylocereeae e Rhipsalideae Macro- and micro-morfological analyses were performed in two lineages of epiphytic species of Hylocereeae and Rhipsalideae, through optical and scanning microscopy, in order to amplify the anatomical knowledge and to contribute to the taxonomy and systematics of this group of plants; furthermore, to elucidate inconstancies concerning the fruit typology within Cactaceae. This study provides the first and most extensive family survey on flower and nectary morphology in the Cactaceae, in addition to an ontogenetic study of fruit and seed in three species of epiphytic cacti Hylocereus undatus (Hylocereeae), Lepismium warmingianum and Rhipsalis cereuscula (Rhipsalideae). The results provide evidences of the systematic utility of floral nectaries and nectar sugar concentration amongst the Hylocereeae and Rhipsalideae. It was found that in the Rhipsalideae tribe it is possible to separate three of the four recognized genera for the tribe based on the nectary structure. The fruit ontogeny of the studied species has allowed the recognition of the cactus fruit as cactidium for the family. The structural features of the seed as well as its development are of taxonomical importance with key features being the type of ovule and its morphology, the size and shape of the seed, and the morphology of the embryo. Esta pesquisa foi realizada para avaliar a influência do Al, em solução nutritiva, na altura de plantas, no peso da matéria seca e nas alterações morfoanatômicas de raízes e folhas de milho (Zea mays L.). O experimento foi conduzido em casa de vegetação com tratamentos constituídos de cinco doses de Al (0; 25; 75; 150; e 300 µmol L-1) e seis repetições. As soluções foram constantemente aeradas e o pH foi ajustado a 4,3, inicialmente. A matéria seca da parte aérea e das raízes e a altura das plantas diminuíram significativamente com o aumento da concentração de Al. As raízes de plantas de milho cultivadas em soluções com Al tiveram seu crescimento inibido e apresentaram menos raízes laterais e desenvolvimento do sistema radicular inferior, em comparação com as das plantas-controle. As folhas das plantas crescidas em soluções que continham 75 e 300 µmol L-1 de Al não apresentaram muita diferença anatômica em relação às das plantas-controle. A bainha da folha das plantas exposta ao Al apresentou epiderme uniestratificada revestida por uma fina camada de cutícula e as células da epiderme e do córtex foram as que menos se desenvolveram. No feixe vascular, o metaxilema e protoxilema não tinham paredes secundárias, e o diâmetro de ambos foi muito menor quando comparado com os das plantas-controle. Aluminum (Al) toxicity is one of the most limiting factors for productivity. This research was carried out to assess the influence of Al nutrient solution on plant height, dry weight and morphoanatomical alterations in corn (Zea mays L.) roots and leaves. The experiment was conducted in a greenhouse with five treatments consisting of Al doses (0, 25, 75, 150, and 300 µmol L-1) and six replications. The solutions were constantly aerated, and the pH was initially adjusted to 4.3. The shoot dry matter, root dry matter and plant height decreased significantly with increasing Al concentrations. Compared to the control plants, it was observed that the root growth of corn plants in Al solutions was inhibited, there were fewer lateral roots and the development of the root system reduced. The leaf anatomy of plants grown in solutions containing 75 and 300 µmol L-1 Al differed in few aspects from the control plants. The leaf sheaths of the plants exposed to Al had a uniseriate epidermis coated with a thin cuticle layer, and the cells of both the epidermis and the cortex were less developed. In the vascular bundle, the metaxylem and protoxylem had no secondary walls, and the diameter of both was much smaller than of the control plants. El objetivo de esta investigacion fue analizar la morfo-anatomia de la flor de Epiphyllum phyllanthus (L.) Haw, especie con distribucion amplia en los bosques humedos de America del Sur como epifita. Se recolectaron flores y botones en Maringa, PR, Brasil, fijados, procesados y analizados con microscopio de luz y con microscopio electronico de barrido. La flor es sesil, epigina con hipanto desarrollado. Todos los verticilos florales presentan epidermis simple. Cavidades secretoras con mucilago y cristales de oxalato de calcio se encuentran en todo el tejido parenquimatico de la flor. El androceo posee muchos estambres, con anteras bitecas y tetraesporangiadas. La pared de la antera joven esta formada por epidermis, endotecio, una capa mediana y tapete secretor binucleado, eventualmente uninucleado. El gineceo es sincarpico con 9-10 carpelos, pluriovulado y de placentacion parietal y el ovario tiene haces vasculares invertidos, en un patron similar a Pereskia . La region nectarifera se encuentra en el lado interno del hipanto. El estigma es 9-10 lobado, con epidermis secretora. Los ovulos son circinotropos, bitegumentados, crassinucelados y con funiculo largo como en otras Cactaceae.

Seeds and seedlings of neotropical Laeliinae species (Cattleya loddigesii, Cattleya tigrina, Hadrolaelia purpurata, Laelia anceps, Schomburgkia gloriosa, and Sophronitis cernua) were studied. The seed germination process and the seedling grown in vitro are described. Seeds of the studied species are unitegmic and have conspicuous thickening in the anticlinal and inner periclinal cell walls. The embryo consists of a relatively long and multicellular suspensor. At first stage of seedling development, the embryo differentiates into a protocorm with rhizoids and meristematic tissue. The budding occurs on the protocorms. The endogenous taproot is produced after the first leaves have emerged. The root is triarch or tetrarch and it possesses velamen. Structural characters related to seed coat, suspensor, ontogeny of leaves, and vascular system of the root are significant indicators for the separation of Laeliinae species.

The Cactaceae family is widely distributed in the American continents, from the south and west of Canada to the south of Patagonia (Argentina and Chile). It is included in Caryophyllales and has approximately 1,500 species. Epiphyllum phyllanthus (L.) Haw. exhibits an obligatory epiphytic habit and is widespread in South America. Additionally, it is the only Epiphyllum Haw. species that is indigenous to Brazil. Studies concerning the reproductive biology of Cactaceae have been conducted in no more than 10 percent of the taxa, and such a limited amount of data precludes the suitable comprehension of the reproductive mechanisms in the family. The present work was aimed at providing a morphoanatomical description of the reproductive organs and seedlings of Epiphyllum phyllanthus by means of (i) flower morphoanatomical analysis; (ii) morphoanatomical and ontogenic studies of the pericarp and seed, and (iii) morphoanatomical analysis of seedling in developing. It was observed that the sessile and epigynous flower exhibit a well-developed hypanthium. All the flower whorls has uniseriate epidermis. The syncarpous and pluriovulate gynoecium exhibit 9-10 carpels and parietal placentation. The ovary has inverted bundles and the flower showed the nectariferous region on the inner surface of the hypanthium. The ovule is circinotropous, bitegmic, crassinucelate, and has a long funiculus. The hypanthium exhibit receptacular origin. The bright pinkish-purplish “cactidio-type” fruit has a smooth surface and, when it is ripe, exhibits a high concentration of starch in the pericarp and pulp. The seed is campylotropous, black and ovoid. Its ventral outer surface presents a differentiated relief that is the whitish hilum-micropylar region, in which the aril occurs. O gênero Tacinga, pertencente à Família Cactaceae, é composto atualmente por dez espécies (T. inamoena, T. palmadora, T. funalis, T. braunii, T. werneri, T. saxatilis, T. subcylindrica, T. armata, T. gladispina, T. lilae), duas subespécies (T. saxatilis subsp. saxatilis, T. saxatilis subsp. estevesii) e duas notoespécies (T. quipá, T. flammea). Todas são nativas e endêmicas do Brasil, com exceção de T. lilae, que ocorre na Venezuela. O gênero é amplamente distribuído no nordeste brasileiro e está presente em parte do estado de Minas Gerais, nos biomas Caatinga e Cerrado, onde detém grande importância ecológica, ornamental e alimentícia. Todavia, estudos sobre o gênero ainda são necessários, especialmente para caracterização da morfologia, anatomia e estratégias reprodutivas de suas espécies. Visando ampliar o conhecimento científico sobre este gênero, o objetivo desta pesquisa consiste em analisar a morfologia e anatomia de espécies do gênero Tacinga, bem como ampliar a compreensão das estratégias reprodutivas no grupo sob uma perspectiva filogenética. A pesquisa compreende uma caracterização de órgãos vegetativos (caule/cladódios) e reprodutivos por microscopia eletrônica de varredura e microscopia de luz, um estudo das características e estratégias reprodutivas e a reconstrução da filogenia do gênero com base em análises Bayesianas. A caracterização do hábito e porte das plantas das espécies deste gênero sugerem a existência de três grupos, considerando as espécies aqui estudadas: grupo 1, formado por arbustos de pequeno porte, constituído das espécies T. subcylindrica, T. inamoena e T. flammea; grupo 2, que inclui arbustos de médio porte, composto por T. palmadora e T. werneri; e grupo 3, que engloba os arbustos escandentes e abrange T. braunii e T. funalis. As análises anatômicas revelam semelhanças na anatomia do caule com outras espécies da subfamília Opuntioideae. Em seu aspecto anatômico geral, o caule (cladódio) é constituído por epiderme, camada subepidérmica colenquimática, parênquima clorofiliano, parênquima aquífero, feixes vasculares e medula. Entretanto, importantes diferenças anatômicas corroboram a existência de grupos morfológicos distintos dentro do gênero, como a epiderme do cladódio fortemente ondulada em T. palmadora e T. werneri, e plana nas demais espécies. Sobre a morfoanatomia floral, as espécies de Tacinga apresentam flores morfologicamente distintas. As flores variam na cor das tépalas, formato do pericarpelo, cor dos filetes, formato das escamas basais, entre outros. A reconstrução da filogenia revela que Tacinga é um grupo monofilético bem suportado. Por fim, a reconstrução de estado ancestral dos caracteres florais sugere que as flores de Tacinga seriam polinizadas por beija-flor e evoluíram para também serem polinizadas por artrópodes. Os resultados obtidos neste estudo auxiliam na compreensão dos aspectos morfoanatômicos de estruturas vegetativas e reprodutivas do gênero Tacinga, podendo ser úteis para diferentes áreas do conhecimento, tais quais a taxonomia e ecologia. The genus Tacinga belongs to the Cactaceae family, is currently composed of ten species, (T. inamoena, T. palmadora, T. funalis, T. braunii, T. werneri, T. saxatilis, T. subcylindrica, T. armata, T. gladispina, T. lilae), two subspecies (T. saxatilis subsp. saxatilis, T. saxatilis subsp. estevesii), and two nothospecies (T. quipá, T. flammea). All species, except T. lilae, are native and endemic to Brazil, and T. lilae is endemic to Venezuela. The genus is widely distributed in northeastern Brazil and is present in part of the state of Minas Gerais, in the Caatinga and Cerrado biomes, with great ecological, ornamental and food importance. However, studies on the genus are still needed, especially to characterize the morphology, anatomy, and reproductive strategies of its species. Aiming to expand the scientific knowledge of this genus, the objective of this research is to analyze the morphology and anatomy of Tacinga species and to broaden the understanding of the reproductive strategies in the group from a phylogenetic perspective. The research comprises a characterization of vegetative (stem/cladodes) and reproductive organs by scanning electron microscopy and light microscopy, a study of reproductive characteristics and strategies and the reconstruction of the phylogeny of the genus based on Bayesian analyses. The characterization of plant size and architecture of the species of this genus suggest the existence of three groups, considering the species studied here: group 1, formed by small shrubs, consisting of the species T. subcylindrica, T. inamoena, and T. flammea; group 2, which includes medium-sized shrubs, composed of T. palmadora and T. werneri; and group 3, which includes the scandent shrubs, composed of T. braunii and T. funalis. Anatomical analyzes reveal similarities in the anatomy of vegetative organs with other species of the subfamily Opuntioideae. In its general anatomical appearance, the stem (cladode) consists of the epidermis, subepidermal collenchymatic layer, parenchyma containing chloroplasts, aquifer parenchyma, vascular bundles, and medulla. However, important anatomical differences corroborate the existence of distinct morphological groups within the genus, such as the cladode epidermis with an undulated pattern in T. palmadora and T. werneri and flat in the other species. Regarding floral morphoanatomy, Tacinga species present morphologically distinct flowers. The flowers vary in the color of the tepals, shape of the pericarpel, color of the filaments, shape of the basal scales, among others. Phylogeny reconstruction reveals that Tacinga is a well-supported monophyletic group. Finally, the ancestral state reconstruction of floral characters suggests that Tacinga flowers would be pollinated by hummingbirds and evolved to be pollinated by arthropods as well. The results obtained in this study help understand the morphoanatomical aspects of vegetative and reproductive structures of the genus Tacinga, and may be useful for different areas of knowledge, such as taxonomy and ecology

The Euphorbiaceae are notable for floral and inflorescence diversity and evolutionary complexity. Croton, is the second largest genus in the family and exhibits particular diversity in its flowers, especially regarding perianth and number of stamens, besides the inflorescences, which are also very diverse. Considering Croton\'s great variability in the reproductive structures, the aim of this thesis was to study flowers and inflorescences with an evolutionary approach, including morphology, ontogeny, vasculature, auxin regulation and genetic expression. Flowers in several stages of development were analyzed using light microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. Inflorescences were analyzed in stereomicroscope and the traits were plotted on the most recent phylogeny of the genus. The genetic expression was tested using RNAseq. In the first chapter the flowers showed similarity in the initiation of sepals and the presence of filamentous, petaloid structures in Croton lundianus (Didr.) Müll. Arg., interpreted here as staminodes. In Croton sphaerogynus Baill., staminodes were described for the first time. The staminodes reported here could be interpreted as transitional structures that we considered as evolutionary reductions. In the second chapter, the staminate flowers showed polystemonous androecium and the delay in petals\' initiation and the antesepalous nectaries development interfered in the development of the stamens, characterizing obdiplostemony. Vasculature corroborated obdiplostemony and revealed a central stamen in C. fuscescens with carpelar features, interpreted here as a homeosis case. Glandular staminodes were registered and interpreted as a heterotopy case. The obdiplostemony may be related to modulation of the free IAA concentrations during floral developmental steps and Croton flowers can be used as good models for obdiplostemony, homeosis and heterotopy. In the third and fourth chapter we studied Croton inflorescences, which showed 17 patterns with differences on the organization and distribution of pistillate flowers. The inflorescence traits analyzed were very homoplastic, most likely determined by convergent evolution in distantly related lineages distributed in similar habitats. The genetic expression of C. fuscescens was particularly analyzed and the transcriptome showed that the different zones have their development guided through the same transcripts set. Each zone has different expression level and these variations and gradient could be interpreted as the boundary between each inflorescence zone. The floral developmental novelties and evolutionary links identified here raise the importance of future floral studies with the genus, what would bring a better understanding on how the reproductive structures evolved in the history of the group Euphorbiaceae é uma família que recebe destaque quanto à diversidade de flores e inflorescências, além de sua complexidade evolutiva. Croton L. é o segundo maior gênero da família e exibe particular diversidade floral, em especial quanto a o perianto e número de estames, além das inflorescências, que também se apresentam muito diversas. Considerando a grande variação nas estruturas reprodutivas de Croton, o objetivo desta tese foi estudar as flores e inflorescências com abordagem evolutiva, incluindo morfologia, ontogênese, vascularização, regulação hormonal e expressão gênica. Flores em diversos estágios de desenvolvimento foram analisadas em microscopia der luz e varredura. Inflorescências foram estudadas em estereomicroscópio e os caracteres observados foram analisados nas filogenias mais recentes do grupo. A expressão gênica foi analisada com a técnica RNAseq. No primeiro capítulo as flores apresentaram semelhanças na iniciação das sépalas e presença de filamentos, estruturas petaloides em Croton lundianus (Didr.) Müll. Arg., interpretadas como estaminódios. Em Croton sphaerogynus Baill., estaminódios foram descritos pela primeira vez. Estas estruturas podem ser interpretadas como estruturas de transição evolutiva e reduções florais. No segundo capítulo as flores estaminadas apresentaram androceu polistêmone e o retardo na iniciação das pétalas e o desenvolvimento antessépalo dos nectários foram considerados como fatores chave para o desenvolvimento do androceu como obdiplostêmone. A vascularização corroborou a obdiplostemonia e revelou um estame central com características carpelares em C. fuscescens, interpretado aqui como um caso de homeose. Nectários glandulares foram registrados e interpretados como uma mudança heterotópica. A obdiplostemonia pode estar relacionada com as diferentes concentrações de auxina ao longo das etapas de desenvolvimento e as flores de Croton podem ser consideradas como bons modelos de obdiplostemonia, homeose e heterotopia. No terceiro e quarto capítulo nós investigamos as inflorescências de Croton, que apresentaram 17 padrões com diferenças na organização e distribuição das flores pistiladas especialmente. Os caracteres das inflorescências se mostraram homoplásticos e provavelmente determinados por evolução convergente em linhagens distantes distribuídas em habitats semelhantes. A expressão gênica de C. fuscescens foi particularmente analisada e o transcriptoma demonstrou que o desenvolvimento das diferentes zonas é regulado pelo mesmo conjunto gênico. Cada zona, pistilada ou estaminada, apresenta níveis distintos de expressão diferencial e o gradiente na expressão pode ser o delimitador entre as zonas. Os novos relatos quanto ao desenvolvimento floral em Croton e os links evolutivos identificados nesta tese levanta a importância de estudos para uma melhor compreensão sobre a evolução das estruturas reprodutivas neste grupo tão importante
