International audience; A new species of Hypaeus Simon 1900 is described from French Guiana based on both sexes, Hypaeus olympeae sp. nov. We employed morphological evidence, field observation, as well as the mitochondrial COI rapidly evolving loci to confirm that both males and females belong to the same species. Finally, nine species are newly recorded for the salticid fauna of French Guiana, Cyllodania fasciata (Caporicaco, 1954) syn. nov. is considered junior synonym of Gypogyna forceps Simon, 1900 and 12 COI sequences corresponding to four previously unsequenced Hypaeus species are added to GenBank.

The speed and dynamics of range expansions shape species distributions and community composition. Despite the critical impact of population growth rates for range expansion, they are neglected in existing empirical studies, which focus on the investigation of selected life-history traits. Here, we present an approach based on non-invasive genetic capture–mark–recapture data for the estimation of adult survival, fecundity and juvenile survival, which determine population growth. We demonstrate the reliability of our method with simulated data, and use it to investigate life-history changes associated with range expansion in 35 colonies of the bat species Rhinolophus hipposideros . Comparing the demographic parameters inferred for 19 of those colonies which belong to an expanding population with those inferred for the remaining 16 colonies from a non-expanding population reveals that range expansion is associated with higher net reproduction. Juvenile survival was the main driver of the observed reproduction increase in this long-lived bat species with low per capita annual reproductive output. The higher average growth rate in the expanding population was not associated with a trade-off between increased reproduction and survival, suggesting that the observed increase in reproduction stems from a higher resource acquisition in the expanding population. Environmental conditions in the novel habitat hence seem to have an important influence on range expansion dynamics, and warrant further investigation for the management of range expansion in both native and invasive species.

Software applications for life cycle assessment of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions have become popular over the last decade. Their objective is to provide insight into how GHG emissions could be reduced in the sectors defined by the UNFCCC. However, boundaries between these sectors are not closed and current tools are not designed to represent this complexity or to assess the numerous sources of uncertainties. In this paper, we present CAT v1.0, software developed for managed forests in the LULUCF sector, but whose emission life cycle is linked to that of other sectors. While the structure of the software follows IPCC Guidelines, it also contains additional features such as an embedded Monte-Carlo error propagation technique and a user-friendly flux manager that allows for complex cradle-to-grave representations of the wood transformation industry. The flexibility of the software is illustrated through two case studies in northeastern France.

International audience; A revision of Resinicium collections (Basidiomycota, Hymenochaetales) from French Guiana and French West Indies is provided, and a new species, Resinicium grandisporum sp. nov., supported by morphological as well as phylogenetic analyses based on ITS rDNA sequences, is described and illustrated. An updated key of the genus Resinicium is also provided, which includes species previously described from outside of the studied area.

This study aimed at evaluating alternative methods to ensure regeneration success in temperate low-mountain forest stands by (1) estimating the effects of seed availability, competition from the adult stand and from neighbouring vegetation and interaction with the litter layer on seedling density, and by (2) comparing the effects of various silvicultural methods on regeneration success. The experiment was conducted in a monospecific beech (Fagus sylvatica) stand and a mixed silver fir-beech (Abies alba, Fagus sylvatica) stand with contrasted vegetation communities, in north-east France. Different methods of soil preparation, i.e. chemical (herbicide), mechanical (surface hoeing and deep scarification using light-weight machines) and biological (cover crops after surface hoeing) methods, were applied along a canopy opening gradient. After soil preparation (in 2009), vegetation colonisation and tree seedling density were monitored once a year from 2010 to 2013. Results were similar for the two sites. Seedling density the first year indicated a predominant effect of seed availability and soil scarification over potential competitive effects of adult stand and neighbouring vegetation. Despite continuous vegetation colonisation after soil preparation, seedling density remained stable over the 4 years of the experiment. For each of the 4 years, seedling density increased with canopy cover. Seedling density was higher after mechanical soil preparation than after herbicide application. Cover crops (following surface hoeing) appeared as the best method, ensuring both the lowest vegetation colonisation and the highest seedling density.

Due to the fact that forest ecosystems can potentially mitigate the impact of climate change, the carbon balance of managed forests has caught the attention of a large scientific community. Some authors conclude that extending rotation lengths would actually favour the climate change mitigation effect since more carbon would be stored in the biomass on the average. However, when the occurrence of catastrophic disturbances such as windstorms is not considered, the advantage of extending the rotation length might be overestimated for some species. In this study, we addressed this issue by coupling a growth model, a windstorm damage model and a carbon assessment tool. The evolution of an even-aged European beech (Fagus sylvatica L.) stand was simulated under three different rotation lengths. Simulations including stochastic windstorm events were run and compared with deterministic simulations with no catastrophic disturbance. Our results indicate that when disturbances caused by storms were not taken into account, the carbon balance was actually overestimated in some cases and that this overestimation increased with the rotation length. In our case study, omitting windstorm damage resulted in an overestimation as large as 8% for the longer rotation length. Nevertheless, when windstorm damage was taken into account in the simulation, the longer rotation length still stored more carbon on the average than shorter rotation lengths. However, the marginal gain in carbon storage induced by the increase of the rotation length was reduced.

In recent years, there has been increasing interest in modelling of species abundance data in addition to presence data. In this study, we assessed the similarities and differences between presence-absence distributions and abundance distributions along similar environmental gradients, derived, respectively, from presence-absence and abundance data. Moreover, we examined the possibility of using presence-absence distribution models to derive abundance distributions. For this purpose, we used Braun-Blanquet abundance scores for 243 vascular species at 10 996 French forest sites. Species distribution models were used to analyse the link between the patterns of occurrence, low abundance and high abundance for each species with regard to mean annual temperature, June water balance, and soil pH. For each species, differences in the modelled distributions were characterised by the ecological optimum and ecological amplitude. A comparison of the presence-absence and abundance distributions for all species revealed similar optima and different amplitudes along the three ecological factors. An abundant-centre distribution was observed in environmental space, with species abundance being greatest at the optimal conditions and lower at less favourable conditions of the species occurrence response. Geographical habitat mapping also shows centred, high-abundance suitability within the presence habitat of each species. We conclude that species distribution models derived from presence-absence data provide useful information about the ecological optima of abundance distributions but overestimate the range of habitats suitable for high species abundance. This study demonstrates the utility of presence-absence data for ecologist and conservation biologist when they are interested in the optimal conditions of high species abundance.

International audience; Models for predictions of soil compaction following forest traffic represent important decision tools for forest managers in order to choose the best management practices for preserving soil physical quality. In agricultural soil compaction research, analytical models are widely used for this purpose. Our objective was to assess the ability of an analytical model to predict forest soil compaction under forwarder traffic. We used the results from two experimental sites set up in north-eastern France in 2007 and 2008 to compare simulations using the SoilFlex model with observed bulk density following forwarder traffic. The best model-based predictions were found when considering the mean initial soil conditions and an increased rebound parameter in the upper soil layers (0-10 cm) in comparison to the deeper layers (10-50 cm). The need to increase the rebound parameter in the soil surface layer to improve model accuracy was attributed to a large soil organic matter content in the uppermost layers of forest soils. For the site where initial soil mechanical parameters were measured as a function of soil bulk density and water content, the model performance was good, with a root mean square error (RMSE) of 0.06. The model performed poorer (RMSE of 0.11), especially for the surface soil layer, for the second site that was wetter at the time of traffic and where soil mechanical properties were not measured but estimated by means of pedo-transfer functions. SoilFlex was found to yield satisfactory predictions and could help forest managers estimate the risk of compaction and to select the most appropriate machinery for given soil conditions in order to preserve the soil from physical degradation during traffic in forest ecosystems. However, our results emphasise the need for research on soil mechanical properties of forest soils, in particular on the role of soil organic matter and roots on soil compressive properties.

International audience; Effects of thinning on epicormics have rarely been demonstrated especially due to inaccurate surveying methods. * Our objective was to assess the effect of contrasted thinnings on the ontogeny of epicormics on sessile oak. We used the epicormic composition defined as the arrangement of epicormics in different classes (isolated bud, clustered buds, short and long shoots and "picots") and quantified by the total frequency of epicormics and the proportion of each class. * Epicormic composition was recorded in a silvicultural experiment testing highly contrasted thinnings, at 3 different stand stages and on lower (0.5-3 m) and upper (3-6 m) boles. Ageing provoked an accumulation of bud clusters and of picots. After thinning, epicormic shoots emerged mainly from (1) still present short epicormic shoots, (2) buds either isolated or in clusters depending on the stand stage. Upper boles bore epicormic compositions close to those observed on lower boles in the few preceding years. Upper logs were more reactive than lower boles. * To conclude, the epicormic composition was a relevant tool to follow the dynamics of the epicormic ontogeny and to demonstrate the effects of thinning on it.
