The purpose of the present article was to consider the cross-cultural differences of theory of mind (ToM) and executive function (EF) in young children. Previous studies reported that the appearance of Japanese children's false-belief understanding showed more than a year's delay compared to Western children's. Moreover, recent research has shown that East Asian children's performances of EF tasks were higher than those of Western children's. However, the factors can explain that these cultural differences are uncertain. Some studies suggest that the role of language is important; especially the use of mental verbs in motherchild interactions may cause cultural differences in ToM. With regard to EF, most of all studies pointed out that the role of parents' nursing aff ected children's EF performances. The findings that Chinese and Korean children's advances in EF had no effect on their ToM suggested that cultural factors and development of EF independently influenced young children's mental state understanding.

This study examines the effect of young child's narrations of the story in the standard false-belief task. We also examined the relationship between the children's performance of their recall of the false-belief story and those of the working memory tasks. If repetition of narration of a false-belief story can reduce the load of working memory, young children will be able to answer the protagonist's behavior more correctly than in the standard false-belief task. Three- to 5-year-old Japanese preschoolers were given a standard false-belief task, a book task, a receptive vocabulary task, and two working memory tasks. In the book task, they were asked to narrate the false-belief story back to the experimenter before the prediction question was asked. The performance of the book task was higher than that of the false-belief task. According to the results of partial correlation in which age and vocabulary factors were controlled, the performance of working memory task significantly related to children's recall of key information of the story in the narration phase. These findings show that better working memory enables children to activate the key information of the false-belief story, and this information then enables them to correctly predict another's behavior.

Many previous researches about standard false-belief tasks had focused on children's abilities to predict false actions by others when the children are presented misleading informational conditions. In explanation questions, children were required to understand the causal links between misleading informational conditions, epistemic states, and resulting action. Seventy-nine children, aged 3 to 5, were given the false-belief prediction and explanation task. The results showed that 4- and 5-year-old children referred more temporal narrative makers than 3- and 4-year-old children. The participant who answered the explanation question correctly referred more temporal narrative makers than children who answered the explanation Question incorrectly. This finding indicated that 4- and 5-year-olds began to use the temporal narrative makers when they explain a causal relation between others' false actions and misleading informational conditions.

本論文の目的は､実行機能と心の理論の関連を検討した先行研究をレビューし､実行機能と心の理論の関連を検討していく上で､どのような研究を実施していくことが今後 重要となるのかについて方向性を見出すことである｡, The purpose of the present article was to consider components of executive function and tasks for young children, as well as theoretical hypotheses about the relationship between executive function and theory of mind. The development of executive function in the preschool years is recognized as playing a critical role in cognitive and social development. Many tasks that measure young children's executive functions have been used both in clinical neuropsychology and in developmental psychology for the past decade and a half. Executive function is defined as goal-directed behavior, including planning, organized search, and impulse control. It is not a single construct, but consists of some components, such as inhibitory control, attentional flexibility, error correction and detection, and resistance to interference. Many recent studies have demonstrated that the development of executive function is the factor that contributes to young children's understanding of other's false belief--"theory of mind". In this review, I proposed that one important factor of executive function is "goal maintenance" and that executive function should be analyzed as subcomponents that have an effect on the sub-processes of "theory of mind".

The present study examines young children's spatial perspective taking ability by using the children's reconstruction and drawing tasks. The subjects were 25 children from a nursery school, ranging from 5;11 to 6;11 years of age. The children observed a mug that was placed in a box with a small window. In the pre-test, they only looked at the mug from the front view and were asked to draw the mug in the box. In the posttest, similar tasks were given, but this time they were allowed to look from the side window. In addition, they were asked to put the mug on the box. They performed two conditions: the identity condition and the placement condition. In the identity condition, the mug was seen as the cup with no handle from the front view. In the placement condition, the mug was seen that it was in the small box from the front view. The results show that the 5-and 6-year-olds are able to reconstruct the object as they were in both conditions.
