1. Self-organizing Nervous Systems for Robot Swarms

Abstract

The system architecture controlling a group of robots is generally set before deployment and can be either centralized or decentralized. This dichotomy is highly constraining, because decentralized systems are typically fully self-organized and therefore difficult to design analytically, whereas centralized systems have single points of failure and limited scalability. To address this dichotomy, we present the Self-organizing Nervous System (SoNS), a novel robot swarm architecture based on self-organized hierarchy. The SoNS approach enables robots to autonomously establish, maintain, and reconfigure dynamic multi-level system architectures. For example, a robot swarm consisting of $n$ independent robots could transform into a single $n$-robot SoNS and then into several independent smaller SoNSs, where each SoNS uses a temporary and dynamic hierarchy. Leveraging the SoNS approach, we show that sensing, actuation, and decision-making can be coordinated in a locally centralized way, without sacrificing the benefits of scalability, flexibility, and fault tolerance, for which swarm robotics is usually studied. In several proof-of-concept robot missions -- including binary decision-making and search-and-rescue -- we demonstrate that the capabilities of the SoNS approach greatly advance the state of the art in swarm robotics. The missions are conducted with a real heterogeneous aerial-ground robot swarm, using a custom-developed quadrotor platform. Abstract

Accurate reduction and maintenance of the stability with correct implant positioning is critical for surgical treatment of tibial plateau fractures. Our technique includes an arthroscopic reduction and fixation of Schatzker type III tibial plateau fractures with a bulls-eye screw placement without fluoroscopy control. With the arthroscopic guidance, an anterior cruciate ligament drill guide is placed and a K-wire sent to the midpoint of the depressed fragment through the guide at a 40° angle to the coronal axis of the tibia. A tunnel is created with the drill over the K-wire. The depressed fragment is further augmented with gentle impacts over the K-wire. After arthroscopic reduction control, an appropriate-sized iliac graft is pushed until it is below the depressed fragment. The targeting device is adjusted at 130° so that it is parallel to the joint line and a K-wire sent through the device so that it would pass just below the graft. The graft is then supported with cannulated screws sent over the K-wire. This technique provides an arthroscopic reduction of the chondral surface and precise placement of the rafting screws without fluoroscopy.

Abstract

Objectives: We studied the effect of different vibration frequencies on spinal cord excitability and heat pain perception. We hypothesized that the effects of vibration on spinal cord reflexes, and, also those on heat pain perception, depend on vibration frequency. Methods: In 9 healthy subjects, we applied vibration over the tibial is anterior muscle at three different frequencies (50, 150, or 250 Hz) on spinal cord reflex excitably, tested with the H reflex and the T wave in the soleus muscle, as well as on sensory and pain perception. tested by measuring warm perception (WT) and heat pain perception thresholds, (HPT) in sites rostra! and caudal to vibration. Exams were carried out before, during, and after vibration. Results: The amplitude of the H reflex and T wave significantly decreased during vibration in comparison to baseline. Low frequencies (50 and 150Hz) induced greater reflex suppression than high frequency (250Hz). No significant changes were observed on WT and HPT. Conclusions: The effects of vibratory stimulation can be summarized as frequency-related suppression of the spinal cord excitability without an effect on warm and heat pain perception. The present results may help to design vibration-related interventions intended to diminish spinal cord reflex excitability in spastic patients.

Abstract

Background Data monitoring of clinical trials is a tool aimed at reducing the risks of random errors (e.g. clerical errors) and systematic errors, which include misinterpretation, misunderstandings, and fabrication. Traditional ‘good clinical practice data monitoring’ with on-site monitors increases trial costs and is time consuming for the local investigators. This paper aims to outline our approach of time-effective central data monitoring for the SafeBoosC-III multicentre randomised clinical trial and present the results from the first three central data monitoring meetings. Methods The present approach to central data monitoring was implemented for the SafeBoosC-III trial, a large, pragmatic, multicentre, randomised clinical trial evaluating the benefits and harms of treatment based on cerebral oxygenation monitoring in preterm infants during the first days of life versus monitoring and treatment as usual. We aimed to optimise completeness and quality and to minimise deviations, thereby limiting random and systematic errors. We designed an automated report which was blinded to group allocation, to ease the work of data monitoring. The central data monitoring group first reviewed the data using summary plots only, and thereafter included the results of the multivariate Mahalanobis distance of each centre from the common mean. The decisions of the group were manually added to the reports for dissemination, information, correcting errors, preventing furture errors and documentation. Results The first three central monitoring meetings identified 156 entries of interest, decided upon contacting the local investigators for 146 of these, which resulted in correction of 53 entries. Multiple systematic errors and protocol violations were identified, one of these included 103/818 randomised participants. Accordingly, the electronic participant record form (ePRF) was improved to reduce ambiguity. Discussion We present a methodology for central data monitoring to optimise quality control and quality development. The initial results included identification of random errors in data entries leading to correction of the ePRF, systematic protocol violations, and potential protocol adherence issues. Central data monitoring may optimise concurrent data completeness and may help timely detection of data deviations due to misunderstandings or fabricated data.

23. Examining Preschool Children’s Perceptions of School

Abstract

The study employed a qualitative case study design to explore preschool children’s perceptions of school. The research involved 100 children aged 5–6 years from five different kindergartens during the fall semester of the 2022–2023 academic year. Data were collected through the ‘School Perception Interview Form’ and ‘School Picture Drawings’ to explore the children’s perceptions. To comprehensively analyze the collected data, the study employed content analysis, a common method used in qualitative data analysis. The content analysis process involved four stages: coding the data, identifying themes, organizing codes and themes, and describing and interpreting the findings. The study findings revealed that the children perceived school as a place for learning new things and experiencing happiness. Their favorite activity was art, and they enjoyed the school’s garden area. They preferred Lego/blocks and puzzles the most. Overall, they exhibited a positive attitude toward attending school, and their drawings depicted school buildings.

Abstract

Uluslararası para piyasalarında 2009 yılından itibaren faiz oranlarının oldukça düşük seviyelerde seyretmesi sermaye piyasalarında likiditenin bollaşmasına yol açmıştır. Yaşanan likidite bolluğu 2019 yılına kadar sürmüş, sonrasında alınan kararlar doğrultusunda faiz oranlarının sert bir şekilde yükselmesi likidite kıtlığı dönemini başlatmıştır. Bu çalışmanın amacı likidite bolluğu ve kıtlığı dönemlerinde, şirketlerin kaldıraç, dış borçlanma düzeyi ile piyasa değeri ilişkisini farklı yönde etkileyip etkilemediğinin incelenmesidir. Çalışmada Borsa İstanbul imalat sanayi şirketlerinin likidite bolluğu ve kıtlığı dönemlerini kapsayan 2010-2022 döneminde, 190 şirket ve 52 çeyrek dönemlik veri kullanılarak analiz gerçekleştirilmiştir. Sistem GMM tahmincisi yanında diğer dirençli tahmin yöntemi olan Driscoll-Kraay yöntemi ile modeller tahmin edilmiştir. Gerçekleştirilen analiz sonucunda, likidite bolluğu ve kıtlığı döneminde modellerin tahmin bulgularının farklılaştığı tespit edilmiştir. Likidite bolluğu döneminde şirketlerin kaldıraç düzeyi piyasa değeri arasında pozitif yönlü bir ilişki; dış borçlanma düzeyleri ile piyasa değeri arasında bir ilişki olmadığı tespit edilmiştir. Likidite kıtlığı döneminde ise şirketlerin dış borçlanma düzeyinin piyasa değerini azaltıcı yönde etkisi olduğu, kaldıraç düzeyi ile piyasa değeri arasında ilişki bulunmadığı bulgusuna ulaşılmıştır. Her iki dönemde tam tersi bulgular elde edilmesinde, farklılaşan faiz oranları sebebiyle finansal kaldıracın vergi tasarrufu avantajının bu sürece etki edebileceği düşünülmektedir.

In thorough literature survey it is found that average airfare, runway capacity, average number of flights per day, level of service, births, deaths, immigration to Istanbul, immigrations from Istanbul, population of Istanbul, Gross Domestic Products and Gross Domestic Products growth rate are key factors considered when creating models for air passenger demand. In this paper, we insert terror attacks as a new factor that may affect air transportation demand in Istanbul Atatürk International Airport. Increase in the number of terrorists may increase the number of attacks and may have a very negative effect on the mobility of people who live in Turkey or who want to visit Turkey. There were always terror attacks in Turkey in past too, but after ISIL emerging terror threats became more frequent. So terror became a very important factor which effects air passenger demand in Istanbul Atatürk International Airport in 2014 after terrorist attacks of ISIL. But results in this paper show that although terror might have a negative effect on air transportation demand, other factors for example airfare, population, runway capacity etc. play dominant roles and capacity expansion in Istanbul Atatürk International Airport will be required until 2023. This paper shows that capacity of Istanbul Atatürk International Airport will not be enough for air transportation and a new, bigger airport will be needed. Turkey has already started constructing a new airport in the north of Istanbul in 2014. © IEOM Society International.

Abstract

Wood stiffness, or modulus of elasticity (MOE), is an important property of structural wood products. The ability to genetically improve wood stiffness has increased because of the availability of tools that can measure acoustic velocity (AV, an indirect measure of MOE) on standing trees. Our goals were to optimize methods for measuring AV on young (6- to 12-year-old) Douglas-fir and western hemlock, and then use these methods to understand the genetics of wood stiffness. In Phase I, we evaluated four standing-tree tools (TreeSonic-TS, TreeSonic-SD02, Microsecond Timer, and Ultrasonic Timer) by comparing AV2 measured on standing trees to AV2 measured on logs cut from these trees (i.e., using the HM200). We found that measuring across a whorl of branches had little adverse effect on AV measurements, and that placing the acoustic sensors on the same-face of the tree was slightly better than placing them on opposite faces. In Phase II, we used full-sib heritabilities (hfs2) to compare the TreeSonic-SD02 and Microsecond Timer, sensor orientations (same-face versus opposite-face), and flight path adjustments. Because the effect of standing-tree tool and sensor orientation was non-significant, we recommend that breeders use the TreeSonic-SD02 and same-face orientation for practical reasons. Using this approach, hfs2 for AV2 was 0.90 to 0.56 in Douglas-fir and 0.51 in western hemlock, and we concluded that genetic gains of 7.0–17.2% can be obtained by measuring 10 or more trees per full-sib family, depending on species and seed production strategy. Because we found no strong statistical support for substantial non-additive genetic variation, the current approach of breeding for additive genetic value, and then collecting open-pollinated seed from orchards seems appropriate for improving wood stiffness. AV2 had weak genetic correlations with growth traits (height, diameter at breast height, and volume) in Douglas-fir (−0.21 to 0.33), but moderately positive correlations in western hemlock (0.36–0.54). Therefore, there is ample opportunity to improve the stiffness of young trees without adversely affecting growth. Although mean stiffness was higher for Douglas-fir, about 10% of the western hemlock families (7 out of 80) had higher AV2, and about 28% of the families (22 out of 80) had higher dynamic MOE than the mean for Douglas-fir. This suggests that intensive selection and breeding in western hemlock could be used to create varieties of trees that compare favorably with unselected Douglas-fir. This may improve the ability of western hemlock to compete with Douglas-fir where stiffness is important.

Abstract

Taylor and Francis Ltd, Aim: To determine the incidence and outcomes of respiratory syncytial virus (RSV)-related acute lower respiratory tract infection (ALRI) including morbidity, nosocomial infection and mortality among newborn infants who were admitted to the neonatal intensive care units (NICUs).Methods: A multicenter, prospective study was conducted in newborns who were hospitalized with community acquired or nosocomial RSV infection in 44 NICUs throughout Turkey. Newborns with ALRI were screened for RSV infection by Respi-Strip®-test. Main outcome measures were the incidence of RSV-associated admissions in the NICUs and morbidity, mortality and epidemics results related to these admissions.Findings: The incidence of RSV infection was 1.24% (n: 250) and RSV infection constituted 19.6% of all ALRI hospitalizations, 226 newborns (90.4%) had community-acquired whereas 24 (9.6%) patients had nosocomial RSV infection in the NICUs. Of the 250 newborns, 171 (68.4%) were full-term infants, 183 (73.2%) had a BW >2500 g. RSV-related mortality rate was 1.2%. Four NICUs reported seven outbreaks on different months, which could be eliminated by palivizumab prophylaxis in one NICU.Conclusion: RSV-associated ALRI both in preterm and term infants accounts an important percent of hospitalizations in the season, and may threat other high-risk patients in the NICU. © 2015 Taylor & Francis., Alan, S.; Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, Hitit University Corum Training and Research Hospital, Vedat Dolakay Cad. Abstract

Tailoring studies were conducted to illustrate the consequences of chordwise vibration mode (CVM) on the flutter and divergence characteristics of moderate- to high-aspect ratio balanced laminated lifting surfaces as a function of ply angles. Numerical results revealed the strong effect of CVM inclusion in aeroelastic instability calculations. When CVM is considered, a better convergence in mode shapes was obtained regardless of the aspect-ratio effects.

Abstract

Background: Several retrospective studies have reported an increase in necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) during the 48 h following red blood cell (RBC) transfusion. Whether withholding enteral feeding during transfusion decreases the risk of transfusion-associated acute gut injury (TRAGI) in preterm infants is unclear. Study design and methods: In this pilot study, 112 preterm infants with gestational age ≤32 weeks and/or birth weight ≤1500 g were randomly assigned to withholding (NPO) or continuance of feeding (FED) during RBC transfusion. Primary outcome measure was development of NEC (stage ≥ 2) within 72 h of a transfusion and the change in abdominal circumference. Results: One hundred fifty-four transfusion episodes (74 NPO and 80 FED) were analyzed. Demographic characteristics were found to be similar in both groups. There was no difference in rates of NEC (0 versus 3.4%; p =.49) between the NPO and FED groups. The incidence of feeding intolerance was higher in the FED group; however, it was statistically insignificant (1.9 versus 6.8%, p =.36). Abdominal circumference remained similar in both groups in all three consecutive days following transfusion (p>.05). Conclusion: This pilot study does not support withholding feedings during transfusion but is not adequately powered to test the hypothesis that NPO decreases NEC rates. Abstract

Purchase and sale transactions of products and services include trade. Electronic commerce (E-commerce) is expressed as the realization of this process in electronic area. Today, e-commerce has been considered as one of the new trends of international trade. E-commerce offers individuals and businesses more product options with lower prices, allows them saving time, making payments faster and delivering products to long distances in a short time. In this study, the effect of per capita GDP in Turkey and EU countries on e-commerce has been investigated by using panel data analysis through the annual data of period between 2007 and 2019. Moreover the rate of internet usage and employment rate by education level have been added the study as the other independent variables that affect e-commerce. Empirical results demonstrate that a 1% increase in GDP per capita causes a rise of 7.29% on e-commerce. Also there is a significant and positive relationship between employment and e-commerce according to per capita GDP, internet usage rate and education level.

Abstract

Cortical relay time (CRT) is a neurophysiologic method that measures transmission between sensory and motor cortices. In this study, we calculated CRT to evaluate intrahemispheric transmission in idiopathic Parkinson's disease (PD). We recorded the following parameters: 1) long latency reflexes (LLRs), 2) motor-evoked potentials (MEPs), and 3) somatosensory-evoked potentials (SEPs) according to previously published reports, and cortical relay time was calculated using the following formula: Latency of LLR II - (onset latency of MEP response + latency of N20 response of SEP). CRT was shorter in patients with apraxia compared with patients without apraxia. The findings may raise the possibility of intrahemispheric aberrant conduction or abnormal synaptic reorganization in the presence of apraxia in PD.

Abstract

Amaç Bu calışmanın amacı, diffüz intrinsik pontin gliomalı (DIPG) tanısı alan ve tedavi edilen hastalarımızın klinik bulguları ile tedavi sonuçlarını değerlendirmektir. Hasta ve yöntemler Ondokuz Mayıs Üniversitesi Tıp Fakültesi Çocuk Hastanesinde, 2000 ile 2016 yılları arasında DIPG tanısı konan çocukların klinik verilerini geriye dönük olarak analiz ettik. Tanımlayıcı istatistikler ve sağkalım (OS) analizleri yapıldı. Bulgular Çalışmaya 21 çocuk dahil edildi; 13’ü erkek, 8’i kız olan hastaların ortanca tanı yaşı 9,4 yıl (2,9-15,7 yıl) idi. Tüm hastalar radyoterapi ve kemoterapi alırken 2010 yılından itibaren nimotuzumab ve vinorelbine tedavisi de uygulandı (6 hasta). Ortanca sağkalım süresi 15,8 ay (6-262 ay) idi; bu rakam 1. yıl, 18. ay, 24. ay ve 5. yılda sırasıyla %81, %33,3, %23,8 ve %9,5 olarak hesaplandı. Nimotuzumab alanların 2 yıllık sağkalımı %33,3 (SE: %19,2) iken almayanların %20 ( SE: %10,3) idi (p: 0,78). Ortanca sağkalım Nimotuzumab alanlarda 17,9 ay (5,8-85,1 ay) almayanlarda ise 15,8 ay (9,3-262,1 ay) idi (p: 0,808). Sonuç Beyin sapı gliomlarında halen yaşam oranları düşüktür ve radyoterapi asıl ve etkin tedavi seçeneği olmaya devam etmektedir. Bununla birlikte, moleküler genetiğinin daha iyi anlaşılması, umut verici preklinik modeller ve kan beyin bariyerini aşan yeni tekniklerin sağkalım üzerine olumlu katkısı beklenmektedir.

Abstract

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Identifying international differences in the management of acute pediatric poisonings may help improve the quality of care. The objective of this study was to assess the international variation and appropriateness of gastrointestinal decontamination (GID) procedures performed in children and adolescents who present with acute poisonings to emergency departments. METHOD(S): This was an international, multicenter, cross-sectional prospective study including children <18 years with poisoning exposures presenting to 105 emergency departments in 20 countries from 8 global regions belonging to the Pediatric Emergency Research Networks. Data collection started between January and September 2013 and continued for 1 year. The appropriateness of GID procedures performed was analyzed using the American Academy of Clinical Toxicology and the European Association of Poisons Centres and Clinical Toxicologists' recommendations. Multivariate logistic regression was performed to identify independent risk factors for performing GID procedures. RESULT(S): We included 1688 patients, 338 of whom (20.0%, 95% confidence interval 18.1%-22.0%) underwent the following GID procedures: activated charcoal (166, 49.1%), activated charcoal and gastric lavage (122, 36.1%), gastric lavage (47, 13.9%), and ipecac (3, 0.9%). In 155 (45.8%, 40.5%-51.2%), the GID procedure was considered appropriate, with significant differences between regions. Independent risk factors for GID procedures included age, toxin category, mechanism of poisoning, absence of symptoms, and the region where the intoxication occurred (P < .001). CONCLUSION(S): Globally, there are substantial differences in the use and appropriateness of GID procedures in the management of pediatric poisonings.
