5. Fostering Students' Physical Literacy through Academic Conversations: Using Think-Pair-Share as a Teaching Strategy in Physical Education

Abstract

According to SHAPE America, the goal of physical education "is to develop physically literate individuals." Whitehead suggests that physically literate is a process that can be enriched with the development of the cognitive and affective learning domains through academic conversations. Although common to other content areas, the Think-Pair-Share teaching strategy in physical education is unique and can be utilized to develop Physical Literacy. Think-Pair-Share can be an effective way to engage students in academic conversations to achieve physical literacy and enrich a quality physical education with a little planning. This article introduces the Think-Pair-Share to foster students' physical literacy using a three-phase strategy.

6. Utilizing a Novel Game to Maximize Physical Activity Participation in Physical Education

Abstract

Novel games can enrich a physical education (PE) curriculum by providing students opportunities to increase their moderate to vigorous physical activity and understanding new game concepts, playing positions and physical skills (Clancy et al., 2007). Quidditch is a relatively new game that includes unique characteristics to enhance an existing curriculum. It was initially adapted from "Harry Potter" novels and is now played worldwide. The game offers an alternative to traditional games, empowering all genders to compete together through the four-maximum rule of Quidditch. Providing an opportunity for co-gender game participation is a meaningful way to form students' perceptions of the game and build a more inclusive physical education class. This article provides sample standards-based formative and summative assessment templates, instructional strategies, and resources to teach students how a nontraditional game is played.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of a 3-Day Physical Activity Recall (3DPAR) intervention program on the physical activity (PA) levels of rural Appalachian school youth. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study in which the pre- and postlevel of PA in rural Appalachian school youth has been assessed following a 3DPAR intervention program. A sample of 76 school youth ([M.sub.age] = 13.3 years) recruited from three secondary schools in the Appalachian region was included in the final analyses. To assess intervention effects such as steps per day and moderate to vigorous PA (MVPA) minutes per day, we had participants wear sealed NL-1000 piezoelectric pedometers for 7 days at pre- and posttest. For this 3-week pilot intervention, participants recorded daily activity using a 3DPAR self-report instrument. Participants received two educational sessions during the first three classes of the intervention period. We utilized a MANOVA to determine the effects of intervention participation on pre- versus posttest for the whole week, weekdays, and weekends. Youth who completed the 3DPAR-delivered intervention significantly increased their step counts on the weekends. 49. Taekwondo Instructional and Assessment Strategies in Authentic Settings

Abstract

Martial arts, including taekwondo, have become popular in the United States and are being taught in some physical education programs. Unfortunately, martial arts skills in physical education are likely to be taught in a traditional manner (mastering basic skills and performing routines as a large group) and assessed in a closed setting. The purpose of this article is to help physical educators to incorporate authentic assessment strategies into their instructional plans and formats. Additionally, sample instructional strategies to teach taekwondo in authentic settings are provided, along with basic terminology of taekwondo.
