Simple Summary: Although the LUX-Lung 8 trial has demonstrated the clinical benefit of afatinib as a second-line treatment for squamous cell carcinoma of the lung (LSCC), data on its use as a later-line treatment and sequential treatment following immunotherapy remain underexplored. This study on the real-world evidence of afatinib in LSCC patients who progressed both after chemotherapy and immunotherapy showed encouraging clinical outcomes with 2.1 months of time to treatment failure (TTF) and a 59.5% disease control rate in those patients without new safety signals. In addition, the erythroblastic oncogene B 2 (ERBB2) mutation was significantly associated with a longer TTF than the wild type. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first real-world study to demonstrate treatment outcomes, safety, and molecular biomarkers of afatinib in LSCC regardless of prior treatment lines. The present data may provide valuable insights for better management of patients with LSCC in routine clinical practice. This study aimed to evaluate treatment outcomes and safety of afatinib in patients with squamous cell carcinoma of the lung (LSCC) who progressed after chemotherapy and immunotherapy. We recruited patients both retrospectively and prospectively and collected the outcomes and safety data. Additionally, we performed next-generation sequencing using tumor tissue and/or plasma to explore potential molecular biomarkers. Altogether, 42 patients were included in the final analysis. The median number of prior treatments was three (range 1–8), and the median TTF was 2.1 months. Objective response rate and disease control rate were 16.2% and 59.5%, respectively, and median duration of response was 4.0 months among response evaluable patients (n = 37). Treatment-related adverse events (TRAEs, including diarrhea, stomatitis, and paronychia) occurred in 22 (52.3%) patients; however, most were grade 2 or lower, and only 5 cases were grade 3. TRAEs led to dose modification in 17 (40.5%) and discontinuation in 4 (9.5%) patients. The TTF in patients with ERBB2 mutations was significantly longer than that in patients without (6.8 vs. 2.1 months, p = 0.045). Our results highlight that afatinib is a reasonable treatment option in terms of effectiveness and safety, and ERBB2 mutation can be used as a predictive biomarker in clinical settings. Background: Higher concentrations of particulate matter (PM) have been shown to cause deterioration of the symptoms of respiratory and cardiovascular disease in several regional studies. Here, we aimed to investigate the healthcare utilization of lung cancer patients associated with short‐term exposure to PM at the national level in Korea. Methods: We extracted the data of 210 558 subjects over a period of 3 years (2015–2017), who were diagnosed with lung cancer before 2015 and benefited from the National Health Insurance Sharing Service. We performed the interpolation method using the geographic information system to calculate the estimated mean PM2.5 and PM10 concentrations by regions and classified three groups as high (upper 10%), intermediate (10%–90%), and low (bottom 10%) based on the mean PM mass concentrations of the month. Results: The monthly average number of outpatient visits was significantly increased in high PM2.5 urban areas (46.296 vs. 50.646, p = 0.015). In high PM2.5 nationwide regions, the monthly average number of emergency admission was significantly increased (0.528 vs. 0.785, p = 0.001). The outpatient visits tended to change with PM2.5 concentration and correlated with PM10/PM2.5 concentrations in urban and nationwide areas. In high PM2.5 urban regions, there was a significant increase in bronchodilator prescriptions (3.102 vs. 3.758, p = 0.008). Concerning high PM2.5 nationwide regions, there were significantly increased prescriptions of antibiotics, steroids, bronchodilators, antihistamines, and mucolytics. In this study, we prepared flexible and transparent hybrid electrodes based on an aqueous solution of non-oxidized graphene and single-walled carbon nanotubes. We used a simple halogen intercalation method to obtain high-quality graphene flakes without a redox process and prepared hybrid films using aqueous solutions of graphene, single-walled carbon nanotubes, and sodium dodecyl sulfate surfactant. The hybrid films showed excellent electrode properties, such as an optical transmittance of ≥90%, a sheet resistance of ~3.5 kΩ/sq., a flexibility of up to ε = 3.6% ((R) = 1.4 mm), and a high mechanical stability, even after 103 bending cycles at ε = 2.0% ((R) = 2.5 mm). Using the hybrid electrodes, thin-film transistors (TFTs) were fabricated, which exhibited an electron mobility of ~6.7 cm2 V−1 s−1, a current on-off ratio of ~1.04 × 107, and a subthreshold voltage of ~0.122 V/decade. These electrical properties are comparable with those of TFTs fabricated using Al electrodes. Purpose: Advancements in photodynamic diagnosis (PDD) and photodynamic therapy (PDT) as a standard care in cancer therapy have been limited. This study is aimed to investigate the clinical availability of 5-aminolevulinic acid (5-ALA)-based PDD and PDT in glioblastoma (GBM) patient-derived tumorspheres (TSs) and mouse orthotopic xenograft model. Methods: PDT was performed using a 635 nm light-emitting diode (LED). Transcriptome profiles were obtained from microarray data. For knockdown of C5α, siRNA was transfected into tumor mesenchymal stem-like cells (tMSLCs). The invasiveness of TSs was quantified using collagen-based 3D invasion assays. Results: Treatment with 1 mM 5 ALA induced distinct protoporphyrin IX (PpIX) fluorescence in GBM TSs, but not in non-tumor cells or tissues, including tMSLCs. These observations were negatively correlated with the expression levels of FECH, which catalyzes the conversion of accumulated PpIX to heme. Furthermore, the 5-ALA-treated GBM TSs were sensitive to PDT, thereby significantly decreasing cell viability and invasiveness. Notably, the effects of PDT were abolished by culturing TSs with tMSLC-conditioned media. Transcriptome analysis revealed diverse tMSLC-secreted chemokines, including C5α, and their correlations with the expression of stemness- or mesenchymal transition-associated genes. By adding or inhibiting C5α, we confirmed that acquired resistance to PDT was induced via tMSLC-secreted C5α. Conclusions: Our results show substantial therapeutic effects of 5-ALA-based PDT on GBM TSs, suggesting C5α as a key molecule responsible for PDT resistance. Terahertz radiation has significant potential in medical diagnosis and treatment because its frequency range corresponds to the characteristic energy of biomolecular motion. Advantageously, terahertz-specific low energy does not cause the ionization of biomolecules. In this paper, we review several state-of-the-art terahertz biomedical techniques and results and suggest potential techniques that may be applicable in real-world clinics in the near future. First, some techniques for enhancing the penetration depth into wet biological tissues are surveyed. Endoscopy and otoscopy methods for approaching internal organs are then discussed. The operation principles of sensors utilizing terahertz radiation are explained, and certain sensing examples related to blood disorders, diabetes, and breathing conditions are presented. The greatest potential of terahertz radiation in biomedical applications so far has been in cancer imaging, because terahertz radiation is ideal for measuring the superficial soft tissues in which most cancers occur. The examples presented herein include skin, oral, gastric, breast, and brain cancers. In search of a cancer-specific signal using terahertz radiation, methylated malignant DNA has been found to exhibit a characteristic resonance at approximately 1.65 THz. This resonance may help treat cancer through the demethylation of malignant DNA using high-power terahertz irradiation at this specific frequency, as well as serving as a potential cancer biomarker. Purpose: Dyslipidemia is a major health issue worldwide. There is growing interest in understanding the potential role of kimchi consumption on serum lipid profiles. However, there are limited epidemiological studies available on this topic. Therefore, this study aims to investigate the association between kimchi intake and serum lipid profiles.We conducted an epidemiological study on participants (aged 40–69 years old) selected from the Health Examinees (HEXA) cohort study (n = 61,761). Four types of kimchi, including Baechu kimchi (cabbage kimchi), Kkakdugi (radish kimchi), Nabak kimchi/Dongchimi (a type of water kimchi made with fermented vegetables), and other kimchi, were assessed by a 106-food item semi-quantitative validated food frequency questionnaire (FFQ). Each kimchi intake is the average value calculated from the FFQ of the baseline and follow-up surveys. Fasting blood data were obtained at baseline and follow-up visits. Linear regression was used to examine the relationship between the intake of kimchi and the change in serum lipid profiles.The mean years between the baseline survey and a follow-up survey was 4.97 years. In this study, compared to the lowest category (< 1 serving/day), Baechu kimchi intake (2− < 3 servings/day) had more negative correlations with the change in values of total cholesterol (β: −1.600, 95% confidence interval [CI, −2.744, −0.456]), triglycerides (β: −3.372, 95% CI [−5.414, −1.330]), and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (β: −1.155, 95% CI [−2.214, −0.095]) in women. In men, Baechu kimchi intake (2− < 3 servings/day) had a more positive correlation associated with the changes in values of high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (β: 0.049, 95% CI [0.031, 0.907]) compared to the lowest intake category (< 1 serving/day).Among Korean adults, consumption of kimchi, particularly Baechu kimchi, was found to be associated with improvements in serum lipid profiles. Pancreatic cancer is a lethal cancer with aggressive and invasive characteristics. By the time it is diagnosed, patients already have tumors extended to other organs and show extremely low survival rates. The gut microbiome is known to be associated with many diseases and its imbalance affects the pathogenesis of pancreatic cancer. In this study, we established an orthotopic, patient-derived xenograft model to identify how the gut microbiome is linked to pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC). Using the 16S rDNA metagenomic sequencing, we revealed that the levels of Alistipes onderdonkii and Roseburia hominis decreased in the gut microbiome of the PDAC model. To explore the crosstalk between the two bacteria and PDAC cells, we collected the supernatant of the bacteria or cancer cell culture medium and treated it in a cross manner. While the cancer cell medium did not affect bacterial growth, we observed that the A. onderdonkii medium suppressed the growth of the pancreatic primary cancer cells. Using the bromodeoxyuridine/7-amino-actinomycin D (BrdU/7-AAD) staining assay, we confirmed that the A. onderdonkii medium inhibited the proliferation of the pancreatic primary cancer cells. Furthermore, RNA-seq analysis revealed that the A. onderdonkii medium induced unique transcriptomic alterations in the PDAC cells, compared to the normal pancreatic cells. Altogether, our data suggest that the reduction in the A. onderdonkii in the gut microbiome provides a proliferation advantage to the pancreatic cancer cells. In order to improve in-field Jc values of GdBCO CCs fabricated by the reactive co-evaporation by deposition and reaction (RCE-DR) process with the nominal composition of Gd:Ba:Cu = 1:1:2.5, the Gd2O3 particles trapped in the GdBCO superconducting matrix were refined by controlling the nucleation and growth temperature of Gd2O3 in the liquid phase before the growth of GdBCO film at the same growth conditions of 860 °C in 150 mTorr oxygen pressure. With decreasing the growth temperature of Gd2O3 from 860 to 820 °C in the oxygen pressure of 30 mTorr, the average particle size of Gd2O3 was monotonously decreased from 125 ± 41 to 73 ± 31 nm. With refining the average particle size of Gd2O3, while Jc in a self-field was monotonously decreased, minimum in-field Jc values were first increased and then decreased again. With lowering the growth temperature of Gd2O3, the gradual decrease of self-field Jc may be mainly attributed to the gradual degradation of both in-plane and out-of-plane textures, the variation of the minimum in-field Jc values might originate mainly from the variation of the stacking fault density, which, however, requires further analysis. The pinning properties of GdBa2Cu3O7-δ (GdBCO) films fabricated by the reactive co-evaporation deposition and reaction (RCE-DR) process were very sensitive to the post-annealing temperature in a reduced oxygen atmosphere. For this study, as-grown GdBCO coated conductors (CCs) were post-annealed at the temperatures ranging from 450 to 750 °C in the oxygen pressure (PO2) of 300 mTorr, and subsequently oxygenated at 500 °C for 1 h in pure oxygen gas atmosphere. Compared with the pristine sample, samples post-annealed at the temperature region of 450 °C–600 °C for 1 h possessed higher stacking fault (SF) density and also included the GdBa2Cu4O8 (Gd124) phase while samples post-annealed at 650 °C for 1 h and 750 °C for 5 min showed lower SF density. The HAADF-STEM analyses on the sample post-annealed at 500 °C revealed that the Gd124 phase mainly existed near the CuO phase. At the temperature region of 50–77 K, while the minimum in-field critical current densities (Jc,min) of as-grown GdBCO CC were enhanced in relatively higher fields after post-annealing at 750 °C due to reduced SF density, both Jcab and Jc,min values were increased after post-annealing at 500 °C in relatively lower fields due to both increased SF density and the formation of Gd124. Simple Summary: Crizotinib, an oral tyrosine kinase inhibitor that targets ALK, MET, and ROS1 kinase, has emerged as an effective treatment for ROS1-rearranged NSCLC. In South Korea's real-world setting, characterized by a higher elderly population and increased brain/central nervous system metastasis rates, crizotinib remains a cornerstone in treating ROS1-rearranged NSCLC, providing lasting clinical benefits with a favorable safety profile. Liquid biopsies, utilizing biomarkers, are instrumental in detecting targetable mutations, monitoring the disease burden, and identifying resistance mechanisms. In our study, next-generation sequencing using cell-free total nucleic acids enables the detection of ROS1 fusions and the identification of resistance mechanisms during disease progression. Real-world data on the use and outcomes of crizotinib in ROS1-rearranged non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC) are limited. This study aims to analyze the real-world efficacy of crizotinib in South Korea and explore the utilization of liquid biopsies that implement next-generation sequencing (NGS) using cell-free total nucleic acids. In this prospective multicenter cohort study, 40 patients with ROS1-rearranged NSCLC, either starting or already on crizotinib, were enrolled. Patients had a median age of 61 years, with 32.5% presenting brain/central nervous system (CNS) metastases at treatment initiation. At the data cutoff, 48.0% were still in treatment; four continued with it even after disease progression due to the clinical benefits. The objective response rate was 70.0%, with a median duration of response of 27.8 months. The median progression-free survival was 24.1 months, while the median overall survival was not reached. Adverse events occurred in 90.0% of patients, primarily with elevated transaminases, yet these were mostly manageable. The NGS assay detected a CD74–ROS1 fusion in 2 of the 14 patients at treatment initiation and identified emerging mutations, such as ROS1 G2032R, ROS1 D2033N, and KRAS G12D, during disease progression. These findings confirm crizotinib's sustained clinical efficacy and safety in a real-world context, which was characterized by a higher elderly population and higher rates of brain/CNS metastases. Terahertz (THz) waves are electromagnetic waves in the 0.1 to 10 THz frequency range, and THz imaging is utilized in a range of applications, including security inspections, biomedical fields, and the non-destructive examination of materials. However, THz images have a low resolution due to the long wavelength of THz waves. Therefore, improving the resolution of THz images is a current hot research topic. We propose a novel network architecture called J-Net, which is an improved version of U-Net, to achieve THz image super-resolution. It employs simple baseline blocks which can extract low-resolution (LR) image features and learn the mapping of LR images to high-resolution (HR) images efficiently. All training was conducted using the DIV2K+Flickr2K dataset, and we employed the peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR) for quantitative comparison. In our comparisons with other THz image super-resolution methods, J-Net achieved a PSNR of 32.52 dB, surpassing other techniques by more than 1 dB. J-Net also demonstrates superior performance on real THz images compared to other methods. We measured the optical constants of aqueous biomaterial mixtures with various electrolyte concentrations using terahertz time-domain spectroscopy. The mixtures were divided into water and other electrolyte parts in mass fractions for analysis. The optical constants of the electrolyte, excluding water, were obtained by applying the ideal mixture equation, and the power absorption of the electrolyte was observed to be larger than that of water above 1 THz. Data from the measurement were fitted with the modified double Debye model, and the reorientation and hydrogen-bond formation decomposition times were found to decrease as the electrolyte concentration increased. We evaluated the difference in awareness of stroke warning signs (SWS) and emergency response among occupational groups in the community-dwelling population. From the 2016 Korea Community Health Survey, a total of 10,445 individuals without stroke were included in the analysis. Multiple logistic regression analysis was used to explore the association of occupation with awareness of SWS and correct emergency response. SWS included the following: sudden numbness or weakness, sudden difficulty speaking or understanding speech, sudden dizziness, sudden visual impairment, and sudden severe headache. Respondents’ occupation was classified into six groups: managers and professionals (MP); clerks; service and sales workers (SSW); agricultural, forestry, and fishery workers (AFFW); mechanical and manual laborers (MML); or housewives and unemployed people (HUP). Awareness of each SWS was the same with the highest for MP and lowest for AFFW. After adjusting for socio-demographic factors, compared to MP (reference), AFFW (odds ratio 0.49; 95% confidence interval 0.36–0.67), HUP (0.55; 0.40–0.75), MML (0.57; 0.42–0.79), and SSW (0.62; 0.45–0.86) had significantly lower ORs for knowing at least one of the SWS. Additionally, AFFW (0.79; 0.66–0.96) and MML (0.76; 0.63–0.91) had significantly lower ORs for knowing all five SWS compared to MP. However, there was no significant occupational difference in correct emergency response when a stroke occurred. Abstract A singular vertex cannot always be avoided in constructing networks of boundary curves. When three boundary curves, two tangents of which are collinear, meet at a singular vertex, then the region that is bounded by the curves makes T-shape. We give a necessary condition for G 1 interpolation of a 3-valent singular vertex with Bézier surfaces, suggest a subdivision method with three rectangular sub-patches including T-junctions for use when this condition is not met, and give examples of its use. Surface skinning is a surface generation method that uses a set of given cross-sectional curves, and it is widely used in free-form surface design. In the B-spline surface skinning, the given B-spline curves should be compatible, that is, the curves should have the same degree and knot sequence. While making the curves compatible, lots of control vertices are generated. Although T-spline surface skinning methods have been introduced to reduce the number of control vertices, the T-spline skinning method that was proposed by Nasri et al. (2012) can generate a wiggled surface when the given B-spline curves are not sufficiently compatible. The intermediate cross sections that were introduced for T-spline surface skinning cannot preserve the shape of the given B-spline curves if the adjacent B-spline curves do not have sufficient common knots, and it can cause wiggles on the surface. In this paper, we analyze this issue and suggest a modified method to remove the wiggles on the skinned T-spline surface. Furthermore, we propose an algorithm for shape preservation of the surface. Background: In cases of EGFR‐tyrosine kinase inhibitor (TKI) failure, re‐biopsy may be useful to understand resistance mechanisms and guide further treatment decisions. However, performing re‐biopsy is challenging because of several hurdles. We assessed the feasibility of re‐biopsy in advanced non‐small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients in real‐world clinical practice. Methods: We retrospectively reviewed the clinical and pathologic data of advanced NSCLC patients who experienced disease progression after previous treatment with EGFR‐TKIs at a single tertiary hospital in Korea between January 2014 and December 2016. Re‐biopsy specimens included small biopsy, surgical tissue, or liquid‐based cytology. EGFR mutation was tested using peptide nucleic acid‐mediated clamping PCR. Results: Of the 230 NSCLC patients that experienced progression after EGFR‐TKI therapy, 105 (45.7%) underwent re‐biopsy. Re‐biopsy was successfully performed in 94 (89.5%) patients, and 11 patients were diagnosed with no malignancy. The complication rate was 8.6%, including seven cases of pneumothorax. EGFR mutation testing was performed on 75 patients using re‐biopsy specimens. Of the 57 patients who had sensitizing mutations at diagnosis, T790M mutations were found in 19 (33.3%), while 38 (66.7%) had no T790M mutation. Multivariate analysis showed that the re‐biopsy group was younger (P = 0.002) and exhibited a previous response to EGFR‐TKIs (P < 0.001). Objectives: We aimed to evaluate the prevalence and predictive role of c-MET expression and EGFR mutation in the efficacy of erlotinib in non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC). Methods: We prospectively recruited 196 patients with stage IV or recurrent NSCLC treated with erlotinib after failure of first-line chemotherapy. Immunohistochemistry was used to evaluate c-MET overexpression, silver in situ hybridization (SISH) to assess gene copy number, and real-time polymerase chain reaction to detect EGFR mutations, respectively, in tumor tissue. Results: The major histologic type was adenocarcinoma (66.8%). c-MET was overexpressed in 55.8% (87/156) and dominant in females as well as non-squamous histology. Although c-MET gene amplification and high polysomy were observed in 2.0% (3/152) and 11.2% (17/152), they did not correlate with any characteristics. EGFR mutation was detected in 13.1% (20/153). The objective response rate of erlotinib was higher (61.1 vs. 3.7%, p < 0.001) and the median progression-free survival (PFS) was longer (10.2 vs. 1.9 months, p < 0.001) in EGFR-sensitizing mutations. However, c-MET positivity did not show a significant correlation with response to erlotinib or PFS. Conclusion: We reconfirmed EGFR mutation as a strong predictive marker of NSCLC. Summary: Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is a treatment option for skin cancer and premalignant skin diseases and exhibits rejuvenation effects, including reducing fine wrinkles and whitening, on aged skin. In this study, we investigated the mechanism underlying the whitening effects of PDT on melanocytes (MCs) in vitro and in vivo. Exposure of MCs to PDT in vitro reduced their melanin content and tyrosinase activity without, however, affecting cell survival. Interestingly, melanogenesis was also inhibited by exposing MCs to conditioned media of PDT‐treated keratinocytes or dermal fibroblasts. This paracrine effect was likely due to a decreased release of melanocyte‐stimulating cytokines such as Kit ligand and hepatocyte growth factor from these cells. Graphene is an emerging graphitic carbon materials, consisting of sp 2 hybridized two dimensinal honeycomb structure. It has been widely studied to incorporate graphene with polymer to utilize unique property of graphene and reinforce electrical, mechanical and thermal property of polymer. In composite materials, orientation control of graphene significantly influences the property of composite. Until now, a few method has been developed for orientation control of graphene within polymer matrix. Here, we demonstrate facile fabrication of high aligned large graphene oxide (LGO) composites in polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) matrix exploiting liquid crystallinity. Liquid crystalline aqueous dispersion of LGO is parallel oriented within flat confinement geometry. Freeze-drying of the aligned LGO dispersion and subsequent infiltration with PDMS produce highly aligned LGO/PDMS composites. Owing to the large shape anisotropy of LGO, liquid crystalline alignment occurred at low concentration of 2 mg/ml in aqueous dispersion, which leads to the 0.2 wt% LGO loaded composites. Background We selected glutathione peroxidase 3 ( GPx3) as a specific candidate that is down regulated in patients with lung cancer. In this study, we examined the diagnostic value of serum GPx3, which is an extracellular protein and readily detectable in blood. Methods We collected serum samples from 342 patients with lung cancer and 126 controls (normal healthy people and patients with benign diseases or other malignancies). We measured serum GPx3 levels using the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Results Mean serum GPx3 levels were significantly lower in the patient group compared with the control group (10.1 ± 5.0 μg/mL vs. 13.0 ± 5.8 μg/mL, P < 0.001). In addition, mean serum GPx3 levels tended to be lower in the patients without metastasis compared with those with metastasis (9.6 ± 4.5 μg/mL vs. 10.7 ± 5.7 μg/mL, P = 0.051). Furthermore, mean serum GPx3 levels had a significant difference according to initial treatments ( P < 0.001). In other words, mean serum GPx3 levels were significantly lower in the surgery group (8.2 ± 4.1 μg/mL) compared with the concurrent chemoradiotherapy (11.5 ± 4.6 μg/mL, P < 0.001), chemotherapy (10.7 ± 5.6 μg/mL, P < 0.001), and supportive care groups (10.9 ± 4.8 μg/mL, P = 0.002). Conclusion Our results showed that serum GPx3 levels were significantly lower in the patients who underwent surgery, which indicates that the serum may have diagnostic value in patients at an operable stage of lung cancer, rather than those at a locally advanced or metastatic stage. Background: Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer-related deaths worldwide. The majority of lung cancers are non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), accounting for approximately 85% of all lung cancer types. The Cox proportional hazards model (CPH), which is the standard method for survival analysis, has several limitations. The purpose of our study was to improve survival prediction in patients with NSCLC by incorporating prognostic information from F-18 fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography (FDG PET) images into a traditional survival prediction model using clinical data. Results: The multimodal deep learning model showed the best performance, with a C-index and mean absolute error of 0.756 and 399 days under a five-fold cross-validation, respectively, followed by ResNet3D for PET (0.749 and 405 days) and CPH for clinical data (0.747 and 583 days). A total of 33 pine trees with symptoms of decline were collected in Jeonnam Province, South Korea, and were examined for the presence of nematodes. About 20% of the trees sampled were positive with Bursaphelenchus species. All Bursaphelenchus species were found in recently dead or dying trees. Based on morphological observations, the nematode extracted from the declining pine trees was identified as B. mucronatus. The highly pathogenic pine wood nematode B. xylophilus was not found in any pine trees sampled. B. mucronatus was easily reared on fungus Botrytis cinerea. Twenty one fungal isolates were isolated from dead trees, fallen twigs, and healthy pine trees. The fungal isolates belonged to Trichoderma genus and were dominant in the wood of partially declining pines. The blue-stain fungi transmitted by the Monochamus beetle were not detected. The B. mucronatus population decreased markedly on Auxarthron reticulatum DY-2 isolated from soils. The number of nematodes also reduced on Verticillium saksenae A-1, a nematophagous fungus, and Beauveria bassiana, an entomopathogenic fungus. This observation suggested the fungal production of nematicidal activity against B. mucronatus. When the fungal culture filtrates were also used for nematicidal activity on B. mucronatus, the culture filtrates of A-1, DY-2 and B. bassiana showed over 50% mortality within 48 h exposure. The fungi BC4, BC5 and BC6 isolated from declining pine trees inhibited the reproduction of B. mucronatus, and their culture filtrates also expressed nematicidal activity, indicating a possible interaction between the fungi in pine trees and nematodes at microhabitat level. This work reports an optofluidic SERS chip with plasmonic nanoprobes self-aligned along microfluidic channels. Plasmonic nanoprobes with rich electromagnetic hot spots are selectively patterned along PDMS microfluidic channels by using a Scotch tape removal and oxygen plasma treatment, which also provide the permanent bonding between PDMS and a glass substrate. A silver film with an initial thickness of 30 nm after oxygen plasma treatment creates nanotips and nanodots with a maximum SERS performance, which were successfully implanted with microfluidic concentration gradient generators. The novel device enables the label-free and solution-phase SERS detection of small molecules with low Raman activity such as dopamine at micromolar level in flow. Purpose: Concurrent chemoradiotherapy (CCRT) is recommended for the management of patients with unresectable non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). This prospective study aimed to compare the efficacy of concurrently delivered cisplatin doublets with paclitaxel, or docetaxel, or gemcitabine. Methods: The main eligibility criteria consisted of previously untreated stage IIIB NSCLC. The subjects were randomized into three arms: paclitaxel 45 mg/m 2/week (TP), docetaxel 20 mg/m 2/week (DP), and gemcitabine 350 mg/m 2/week (GP) in addition to cisplatin 20 mg/m 2/week. Three-dimensional conformal radiotherapy was given once daily, weekly 5 fractions and the total prescription dose was 60–66 Gy. The primary endpoint was response rate, and the secondary endpoints were survival and toxicity. Results: A total of 101 patients were recruited into this trial of whom 93 (TP: 33, DP: 29, GP: 31) patients were treated with CCRT from March 2005 to July 2007. Similar response rates were observed across arms: TP: 63.6 %, DP: 72.4 %, GP: 61.3 % ( p = 0.679). There was no statistically significant difference of median survival (TP: 27.3, DP: 27.6, GP: 16.5 months, p = 0.771). In subgroup analysis, a survival benefit of consolidation chemotherapy was not seen, but leucopenia (63.2 %) and neutropenia (68.4 %) more than grade 3 were significantly high in DP arm. The grade ≥3 radiation esophagitis was more frequent in the GP arm (22.6 %, p = 0.163). Conclusions: Among the three arms, no statistically significant difference in response rate, survival, and toxicity was observed. • The Ruby gene encoding a MYB TF is a key component of regulatory complexes that control flavonoid/anthocyanin biosynthesis in citrus. • PCR-based molecular markers were developed for the early and robust selection of citrus breeding lines with high anthocyanin production. • LTR retrotransposon of Ruby locus in citrus contains cis -regulatory elements that respond to cold temperature. Anthocyanins, one of the major plant pigments, are responsible for the coloration of various plant tissues and organs, including fruits. They are known to have significant health benefits. Anthocyanin biosynthesis is influenced by environmental factors such as cold temperature and is transcriptionally regulated by MYB/bHLH/WD40 complexes composed of R2R3-MYB, basic helix-loop-helix (bHLH), and WD40-type transcription factors (TFs). The Ruby locus, which encodes a MYB TF, controls anthocyanin production in the fruit of blood orange varieties in a dominant manner. For the marker-assisted selection of citrus breeding lines with high anthocyanin production, we established PCR-based molecular markers for robust genotyping of Ruby locus alleles. Two dominant Ruby alleles, RD-1 and RD-2 , were specifically detected in the blood orange varieties with high anthocyanin contents in their fruit flesh, but not in the varieties rich in lycopene. For functional analysis of Ruby alleles, we generated transgenic Arabidopsis expressing a functional wild-type R , a non-functional r-1 , or a dominant RD-2 allele. Expression levels of flavonoid/anthocyanin biosynthetic genes and anthocyanin production were highly increased in the transgenic plants expressing the dominant Ruby allele by its retrotransposon-mediated native promoter under cold treatment, suggesting that the retrotransposon may contain cis -regulatory elements that respond to cold temperature. Abstract: In this paper, we discuss the problem of instability in the dimension of a spline space over a T-mesh. For bivariate spline spaces S(5,5,3,3) and S(4,4,2,2), the instability in the dimension is shown over certain types of T-meshes. This result could be considered as an attempt to answer the question of how large the polynomial degree should be relative to the smoothness to make the dimension of a spline space stable. Abstract: Most patients with non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC) who initially respond to epidermal growth factor receptor tyrosine kinase inhibitors (EGFR-TKIs) eventually experience progression of disease. Based on previous trials which showed second response after switching to another EGFR-TKI, we hypothesized that the reintroduction of gefitinib would lead to disease control rate (DCR) in more than 30% of patients. This was a single-arm, open-label, prospective, phase II trial of gefitinib for the treatment of advanced or metastatic NSCLC. Eligible patients had previously responded to, or had experienced disease stabilization with, initial gefitinib treatment for at least 3 months. Prior to retreatment, progressive disease (PD) should be observed, with at least one cytotoxic treatment following initial gefitinib failure. Twenty-three patients were recruited and defined as the intention to treat (ITT) group. Most of the enrolled patients were female (86.9%), never-smokers (91.3%), and adenocarcinoma patients (95.7%). Responses to initial gefitinib were partial response (PR) in 10 cases (43.5%) and stable disease (SD) in 13 cases (56.5%). PR and DCR were observed in 21.7% (5 patients) and 65.2% (15 patients) in the ITT group. Among 14 DNA samples, 13 cases had either exon 19 deletion or L858R point mutation, whereas one patient evidenced the wild-type EGFR gene. Re-initiation of EGFR-TKI can be considered as an option after failure of chemotherapy for those patients who previously controlled to EGFR-TKI treatment. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: A T-junction occurs in a boundary curve network when one boundary curve ends in the middle of another. We show how to construct Bézier surfaces over a boundary curve network with T-junctions. By treating the two micro patches which meet at the edge forming the upright of the ‘T’ as a single macro patch, we reduce the problem to one of achieving continuity between this composite patch and the third patch which has the crossbar of the ‘T’ as an edge. Thus we avoid changes to the boundary network, or to any patches except those that meet at the T-junction. Also, we analyze the singularity of the continuity system with the T-junction, and give the constraint to make a consistent system using free variables of weight functions. Background: RRM1, the regulatory subunit of ribonucleotide reductase, is involved in carcinogenesis and the response to gemcitabine. Two single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNP) in the RRM1 gene (RR37 and RR524) impact promoter activity and are associated with prognosis. The excision repair cross-complementation group 1 protein (ERCC1) is associated with platinum resistance. A SNP of the ERCC1 gene (T19007C) has been reported as a prognostic marker in platinum-treated non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC). Materials and methods: Patients with stage IIIB or IV NSCLC were treated with gemcitabine and platinum (GP) as first-line chemotherapy. Adenocarcinoma was the most frequent histological type, followed by squamous cell carcinoma and then other types. SNP were analyzed with real time-polymerase chain reaction using genomic DNA extracted from peripheral blood. Results: Based on responses to GP patients were classified as responders or non-responders. The response rate was significantly higher in patients with the RR AC-CT genotype (35/64, 54.7%) compared to those with the RR CC-TT genotype (56/147, 38.1%, P= 0.025). No significant difference in response rate was observed according to ERCC1 genotype. In 128 patients with non-squamous cell lung cancer, RR AC-CT + ERCC1 CC (63.2%) and RR AC-CT + ERCC1 CT/TT (61.9%) showed higher response rates compared to RR CC-TT + ERCC1 CC (36.5%), and RR CC-TT + ERCC1 CT/TT (22.2%; P= 0.004). Progression-free and overall survival times were not different between genotypes. Abstract: Teaching pendant is a handheld device by which a human can control a robot. The main functions of a teaching pendant are moving the robot, teaching it about the locations, running robot programs, and jogging the axes. A teaching pendant is usually connected to the robot by a cable. The cable connection and the size of the teaching pendant generally do not pose a problem when the robot controller is separate from the robot. However, a large teaching pendant connected by a cable is not suitable for a self-propelled mobile robot with an internal controller. This paper describes the communication network of a personal data assistant (PDA) as a wireless teaching pendant for a mobile shipbuilding welding robot with embedded controller system that welds and moves autonomously inside the double hull structure of a ship. A double hull is a closed structure that has only a few access holes. It is very difficult and dangerous to weld components inside a double hull structure because of fumes, poisonous gas, and high temperatures. Using a wireless teaching pendant has the following advantages: (1) there are no limits to the welding activities that can take place, (2) the safety level increases because no workers are in close proximity to the robot, (3) workers are far away from the dangerous environmental conditions, (4) it is possible to reduce the weight of the cable connected to the robot, and (5) it is possible to reduce the weight of the robot because of the reduced load of the teaching pendant and the cable. Abstract: We classify and resolve all critical cases in the topology determination method proposed in [Grandine, T.A., Klein IV, F.W., 1997. A new approach to the surface intersection problem. Computer Aided Geometric Design 14 (2), 111–134]. Their algorithm for finding the intersection of two parametric surfaces has two steps: determining the topology of the intersection curves and using that information to find the curves themselves. The essence of the first step is to decide whether the boundary points and the turning points are at the start or the end of a contour. However, there are several cases in which the decision criteria proposed by Grandine and Klein are not applicable. We classify all these cases, which include the tangential intersection of two surfaces, the tangential intersection of the contour with the boundary of the domain of a surface, and the vanishing of in the interior of the domain. Then we resolve all these cases using a perturbation method, which is based on the fact that transversality is a stable and generic property of an intersection. Our approximation satisfies continuity conditions, and is located within a prescribed distance from the exact intersection curve. First we identify the topology of the pre-image of the intersection in the domain of surface using extended [Grandine TA, Klein FW. A new approach to the surface intersection problem. If the error is larger than a prescribed error bound , we subdivide the segment at the point of maximum error, and apply the interpolation process to the two new segments. We continue this recursive process until we have an approximation of the pre-image with an error smaller than . We also find the maximum error bound of the approximation in the model space ; and the bound on the distance, in model space, between the approximations which come from the domain of each surface. The authors investigated the carrier dynamics of n-type modulation-doped InAs/GaAs quantum dots (QDs) using terahertz time-domain spectroscopy to estimate the total number of electrons captured by the QDs. The terahertz power absorption of the sample with QDs was less than that of the sample without QDs. This is attributed to the fact that the carriers are confined in the QDs. The experiment results were fitted into the Drude model and the number of electrons captured by QDs was determined through the difference in the numbers of free electrons of the samples with and without QDs. Effects of hypothermia on the afferent somatosensory transmission to the ventroposteromedial (VPM) thalamus were determined in anesthetized rats and hamsters. Hamsters showed a gradual suppression of afferent sensory transmission during cooling (to 18 °C) and disinhibition during subsequent warming of body temperature (Tb). However, rats exhibited steep inhibition from Tb 26 °C to complete absence of sensory transmission at Tb 20 °C and abrupt disinhibition during subsequent warming. Species difference at thalamic level was quite similar to our previous results in the primary somatosensory (SI) cortex, suggesting that changes of sensory transmission observed in the SI cortex may have already occurred at thalamic level. Differences between the cortex and the thalamus were observed only during deep hypothermia in rat and during the final period of warming in hamster. Conduction latencies of thalamocortical system of both species were not influenced during Tb lowering until 24 °C (equivalent to brain temperature 25–26 °C). These results suggest inherently different adaptability to hypothermia in processing somatosensory information between hibernator and non-hibernator, but similar sustainability of sensory functions of the thalamocortical system during hypothermia in both species. Microelectrode arrays have been developed for simultaneous multi-channel recordings from nervous systems, typically using silicon substrates. However, it has been known that it is difficult to meet the biocompatibility and durability requirements using silicon and other dielectric materials (SiO2, Si3N4), due to environmental moisture and ions. Additional disadvantage of silicon being the rigid material makes it hard to apply these materials in chronic recording situations.Liquid Crystal Polymer (LCP) was recently introduced as a candidate material for electronic packaging purposes. The material acts as efficient barrier against ions and moisture, a desirable feature for a substrate material of microelectrode arrays. In this paper, we report on the neural recording performed using the LCP-based microelectrode arrays.The cell adhesion on the new material was compared very favorably with that using silicon, SiO2, or polyimide material. The microelectrode arrays were patterned with Ti (500 A˚)/Au (3500 A˚) on the LCP film and were employed in both stimulation and recording from rat sciatic nerve. The electrical characteristic of the recorded signal was as good as those using other substrate materials, proving this material as an excellent candidate for next generation microelectrode arrays. The nucleotide sequences of adrenodoxin reductase (adr) gene and isovaleryl-CoA dehydrogenase (ivd) gene and the expression pattern of adr from Frankia EuIK1 strain, symbiont of Elaeagnus umbellata, were determined. 5.5-kb NotI, 5.5-kb SacI, 1.3-kb SacI restriction fragments of pEuAR1, a cosmid clone hybridized with a squalene-hopene cyclase (shc) DNA probe, were subcloned and partially sequenced. Sequence analysis showed three fragments to overlap and harbor adr and ivd genes but not the targeted shc gene. The deduced amino acid sequence of AdR, consisting of 487 amino acids, showed sequence similarity of about 55% with other AdRs, and that of ivd, consisting of 384 amino acids, showed about 60% similarity with others. RT-PCR experiments revealed that the expression of adr was in low level at 6 weeks after inoculation (WAI), reached peak at 8 WAI, and decreased to some extent at 10 WAI. Many physical factors influence post-stroke functional outcomes. However, few studies have examined the influence of height on these outcomes. Here, data from the Korean Stroke Cohort for Functioning and Rehabilitation were used and patients' height was categorized into three groups: short (lower 25%), middle (middle 50%), and tall (upper 25%). Differences in the modified Rankin scale (mRS), functional ambulatory category (FAC), and Korean-translated version of the Modified Barthel Index (K-MBI) scores were analyzed for each group at 6 months post-stroke. A subgroup analysis was conducted based on the initial Fugl-Meyer Assessment (FMA) score. We analyzed functional outcomes in 5296 patients at 6 months post-stroke, adjusting for age and body mass index. The short-height group exhibited higher mRS scores (1.88 ± 0.043), lower FAC scores (3.74 ± 0.045), and lower K-MBI scores (82.83 ± 0.748) than the other height groups (p < 0.05). In the subgroup analysis, except for the very severe FMA group, the short-height group also exhibited worse outcomes in terms of mRS, FAC, and K-MBI scores (p < 0.05). Abstract: Efficiency enhancement of a multicrystalline silicon solar cell using down-conversion of Tm3+ and Yb3+ doped silicate glasses was investigated. Na2O–CaO–SiO2 glasses doped with Tm3+ or Tm3+ and Yb3+ were prepared. Distributed Bragg Reflector (DBR) coatings were sputtered on the glass surface to control the transmission and reflection of the desired portion of the solar spectrum. These were placed on a multicrystalline silicon solar cell in combination with a solar spectrum simulator. The efficiency of solar cell with Tm3+ or Tm3+ and Yb3+ doped glasses increased compared to as-prepared glass without rare-earth addition. The efficiency of solar cell with rare earth doped glasses was re-measured three times with same samples, and the real efficiency enhancement can be proved. The potentials, limitations and future perspectives of rare-earth doped glasses with DBR structure on the efficiencies of PV modules were discussed. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Numerous studies suggest that by elementary school, children have implicit and explicit gender stereotypes about the toys, activities, roles, and abilities associated with boys vs. girls. Furthermore, these stereotypes have been shown to affect children's goals and behaviors, leading them to pursue activities that are associated with their own gender and avoid those that are not. The majority of previous research examining the development of children's implicit gender stereotypes has used the Implicit Association Test, which measures two associations simultaneously. Thus, it is often unclear which association is driving children's gender stereotypes, which hampers the ability to effectively target harmful associations for bias change. The current research uses the Preschool Auditory Stroop, an adaptation of the Auditory Stroop, to measure distinct implicit gender stereotypes in three to seven-year-old children. Across two studies, the first using human voices and the second using computer-generated voices, children were faster to respond when female-stereotypical words were paired with female voices and male-stereotypical words were paired with male voices. These results indicate that children have implicit gender stereotypes as early as age three. Furthermore, results suggested that the magnitude of these implicit gender stereotypes was comparable across our age range. This study indicates that implicit gender stereotypes are present in children as young as three, and results suggest that this methodology can be used in future research to chart the trajectory of distinct implicit gender stereotypes across development. Simple Summary: We investigated the prevalence of genetic alterations and their association with epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) mutations and prognosis in early-stage non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) after curative resection. The results showed that the prevalence of EGFR mutations, anaplastic lymphoma kinase (ALK) rearrangements, and ROS proto-oncogene 1 (ROS1) fusion were 43.0%, 5.7%, and 1.6%, respectively. Patients with EGFR-mutant NSCLC had a higher risk of recurrence than those without EGFR mutations. Additionally, EGFR mutations were related to a high proportion of distant metastases and a higher risk of central nervous system recurrence. A definitive surgical resection is the preferred treatment for early-stage non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). Research on genetic alterations, including epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) mutations, in early-stage NSCLC remains insufficient. We investigated the prevalence of genetic alterations in early-stage NSCLC and the association between EGFR mutations and recurrence after a complete resection. Between January 2019 and December 2021, 659 patients with NSCLC who underwent curative surgical resections at a single regional cancer center in Korea were recruited. We retrospectively compared the clinical and pathological data between the recurrence and non-recurrence groups. Among the 659 enrolled cases, the median age was 65.86 years old and the most common histology was adenocarcinoma (74.5%), followed by squamous cell carcinoma (21.7%). The prevalence of EGFR mutations was 43% (194/451). Among them, L858R point mutations and exon 19 deletions were 52.3% and 42%, respectively. Anaplastic lymphoma kinase (ALK) rearrangement was found in 5.7% of patients (26/453) and ROS proto-oncogene 1 (ROS1) fusion was found in 1.6% (7/441). The recurrence rate for the entire population was 19.7%. In the multivariate analysis, the presence of EGFR mutations (hazard ratio (HR): 2.698; 95% CI: 1.458–4.993; p = 0.002), stage II (HR: 2.614; 95% CI: 1.29–5.295; p = 0.008) or III disease (HR: 9.537; 95% CI: 4.825–18.852; p < 0.001) (vs. stage I disease), and the presence of a pathologic solid type (HR: 2.598; 95% CI: 1.405–4.803; p = 0.002) were associated with recurrence. Among the recurrence group, 86.5% of the patients with EGFR mutations experienced distant metastases compared with only 66.7% of the wild type (p = 0.016), with no significant difference in median disease-free survival (52.21 months vs. not reached; p = 0.983). In conclusion, adjuvant or neoadjuvant targeted therapy could be considered more actively because EGFR mutations were identified as an independent risk factor for recurrence and were associated with systemic recurrence. In this study, we aimed to investigate the feasibility of serum Krebs von den Lungen-6 (KL-6) as a potential biomarker for treatment-related ILD (TR-ILD) in lung cancer. We recruited patients with lung cancer in whom KL-6 was measured to differentiate between pneumonia and ILD (category 1), diagnose and assess the severity of suspicious ILD (category 2), or evaluate baseline levels before cancer treatment (category 3). Among 1,297 patients who underwent KL-6 testing, 422 had lung cancer, and TR-ILD was detected in 195 patients. In categories 1–2, median KL-6 level was higher in drug-induced ILD or acute exacerbation of underlying ILD than in no ILD or radiation-induced pneumonitis, and it was correlated with the severity of TR-ILD. High KL-6 level (cut-off: > 436U/mL) was an independent risk factor for severe TR-ILD, and low KL-6 level with high procalcitonin level (> 0.5 ng/mL) could exclude severe TR-ILD. Patients with severe TR-ILD had worse overall survival than those without, whereas high baseline KL-6 level was associated with worse survival, especially in patients without severe TR-ILD. Therefore, serum KL-6 may be a surrogate marker for predicting the occurrence and assessing the severity of TR-ILD at the time of suspected ILD and before lung cancer treatment. Birefringence, an inherent characteristic of optically anisotropic materials, is widely utilized in various imaging applications ranging from material characterizations to clinical diagnosis. Polarized light microscopy enables high-resolution, high-contrast imaging of optically anisotropic specimens, but it is associated with mechanical rotations of polarizer/analyzer and relatively complex optical designs. Here, we present a form of lens-less polarization-sensitive microscopy capable of complex and birefringence imaging of transparent objects without an optical lens and any moving parts. Our method exploits an optical mask-modulated polarization image sensor and single-input-state LED illumination design to obtain complex and birefringence images of the object via ptychographic phase retrieval. Using a camera with a pixel size of 3.45 μm, the method achieves birefringence imaging with a half-pitch resolution of 2.46 μm over a 59.74 mm2 field-of-view, which corresponds to a space-bandwidth product of 9.9 megapixels. We demonstrate the high-resolution, large-area, phase and birefringence imaging capability of our method by presenting the phase and birefringence images of various anisotropic objects, including a monosodium urate crystal, and excised mouse eye and heart tissues. Single-use plastic culture devices are commonly used for two-dimensional (2-D) cell cultures. However, as oxygen is generally supplied by uni-directional diffusion from the top gas-liquid interface, 2-D cell cultures in the absence of medium flow may experience rapid exhaustion of dissolved oxygen at the bottom of culture wares with high cell densities. To overcome this issue, special cell culture devices utilizing the gas-permeable membrane at the bottom have been developed. The gas-permeable membrane can provide additional oxygen supply thorough rapid equilibration of dissolved oxygen at the bottom of culture ware, where cells are growing. In this study, using typical cell lines such as CHO and HEK-293A, cell growth, metabolic activity, and productivity were evaluated in gas-permeable culture devices compared to those from conventional gas-impermeable culture devices. The specific glucose consumption rate and the yield of lactate from glucose were decreased, revealing the effective utilization of glucose to produce ATP by enhanced supply of oxygen in gas-permeable culture devices. This effect was more clearly observed at in vivo-like pericellular conditions with low oxygen level (5% O2 in the gas phase). The 2-D cell culture device with the gas-permeable membrane at the bottom has shown it's attractive performance for expansion of therapeutic cells that request pericellular conditions particularly, which is important for the maintenance of in vivo cellular activities, including differentiation and proliferation with appropriate cell growth, metabolic activity, and productivity as shown here. Background: Necroptosis is a regulated inflammatory cell death which plays a significant role in cancer development and progression. In this study, we evaluated whether genetic variants in key regulators of necroptosis may affect survival outcome of non‐small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients after surgical resection. Methods: A total of 674 patients who underwent curative surgery were included. Fifteen genetic variants in key regulators of necroptosis (RIPK1, RIPK3, and MLKL) were selected. The association of these variants with survival outcomes was evaluated. Results: Two variants, RIPK1 rs17548629C > T and MLKL rs877375G > C, were associated with better overall survival and disease‐free survival in multivariate analyses. When the patients were divided according to histology, the associations were significant only in adenocarcinoma, but not in squamous cell carcinoma. RIPK1 rs17548629 C‐to‐T change was associated with significantly increased luciferase activity by modulating the binding of miR‐642a. Promoter assays showed a significantly increased promoter activity in MLKL rs877375C allele compared to G allele. Consistently, the mRNA expression level of RIPK1 and MLKL showed significant positive correlation with RIPK1 rs17548629C‐to‐T and MLKL rs877375G‐to‐C changes. Conclusion: Two genetic variants in key regulators in necroptosis, RIPK1 rs17548629C > T and MLKL rs877375G > C, may be used as biomarkers to predict survival outcomes in surgically resected NSCLC patients. Background: Although many studies about survival rates and functional outcomes after stroke have been published, studies on gender differences have reported conflicting results. Aims: To determine whether there are differences in mortality and functional outcomes during the first 5 years after a first-ever ischemic stroke in Korean males and females. Method: This is an interim analysis of the Korean Stroke Cohort for Functioning and Rehabilitation, a prospective multicenter cohort study. Multifaceted functional assessments were performed repeatedly from 7 days to 60 months after stroke onset to test motor, ambulatory, cognitive, language, and swallowing functions as well as activities of daily living (ADLs) in patients with first-ever stroke. Of 10,636 first-ever-stroke patients admitted to nine representative hospitals in Korea, 8210 were ischemic stroke patients included in the mortality analysis. Among them, 6258 patients provided informed consent and 3508 completed functional assessments for 60 months. Gender-related differences in 5-year mortality and functional recovery were analyzed. Result: Women showed a significantly higher 5-year mortality rate than men after correction for possible covariates (p < 0.05). In terms of functional outcomes, women showed worse ambulatory, cognitive, language, and ADL outcomes than men after adjusting for covariates (all p < 0.05). The 5-year recovery pattern differed significantly between genders only for ADL function (β-coefficient estimate = 0.34; p = 0.03). Conclusion: Five-year mortality rate, functional outcomes, and recovery patterns after first-ever ischemic stroke differed significantly by gender.
